As the sun-soaked days of summer return, there’s something special about the way the Valley comes to life. Festivals fill the calendar, trails and parks welcome new footprints and laughter echoes from ballfields to art galleries. It’s a season tailor-made for exploration—and in this issue of Valley Business, we’re helping you do just that.

Our cover story is your curated guide to summer in the Valley, with can’t-miss experiences for every age and interest. You’ll find everything from world-class American art at the Butler Institute of American Art to the beauty and energy of Mill Creek MetroParks’ trails, lakes and newly revitalized Ford Nature Center. If air conditioning and imagination are more your style, don’t miss the Medici Museum of Art’s summer exhibits—including a first-of-its-kind Rockefeller legacy showcase and an ambitious international installation on astrology and creativity.

Sports fans, foodies and families will want to catch a game—or a concert, or a food truck festival—at Eastwood Field, where the Mahoning Valley Scrappers deliver major fun at a price that’s hard to beat. And if nostalgia’s calling, a trip to Past Times Arcade in Girard will transport you back through the lights and sounds of pinball’s golden age.

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

The news conference was barely over. We announced the creation of the Youngstown Innovation Hub for Aerospace & Defense. This transformational project will result in 200 jobs in downtown Youngstown and conservatively another 500 or so throughout the region.

Then came the call from a local employer who asked, since many of these jobs are high tech, additive manufacturing, engineering and similar, how are we going to compete for that talent?

A couple of months later came the Kimberly-Clark announcement. The largest economic development project in five years would result in nearly 500 high-paying advanced manufacturing jobs.

Then came the call from a local employer. The word “fear” was uttered several times referring to competition for talent.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, considering the Valley’s history of decline, this is a good problem.

And we’ll solve it.

The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber has taken on growing population and talent as the No. 1 priority.

Let’s put into perspective why.

Just recently we announced the innovation hub, Kimberly-Clark, 400 jobs connected to a new Amazon facility in Bazetta and several other smaller gains. More announcements are on the horizon.

According to JobsOhio, the lake to river region will need 20,000 more people by 2030 to fill “priority occupations.” The number statewide is 540,000.

Unfortunately, 45% of Ohio’s STEM graduates leave the state. These are the people needed to fill priority occupations.

Here’s what we’re doing about it.

We’ve partnered with Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries to create strategies that help marginalized individuals overcome barriers to employment. We’ve assembled many strategic partners to help. Financial literacy and other barriers are being addressed through programs powered by PNC. Organizations like CoreCivic, United Returning Citizens and many in the behavioral health industry are also helping.

The goal is to increase the labor participation rate by 3% by bringing 10,000 people off the sidelines and into the workplace by 2030.

We’ve partnered with the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments to grow the population. We launched youngstownwarren.org, a website devoted to retaining, returning and receiving people. We are planning intern days to increase the number of STEM students launching careers in the Valley. And we’re using the Mahoning Valley Young Professionals to help us retain and recruit their peers.

We didn’t set a population goal. It sounds like JobsOhio set the goal for us.

And now, a little bit of this and a little bit of that . . .

. . . We can’t grow the population if we don’t grow the housing stock. Among the few regions that are affordable, the Valley is best.

According to Zelman & Associates, more than 50% of the Valley’s renters can afford entry-level home-ownership payments. Zelman also notes a nationwide shift in those under 40 who own (39% in 2022) instead of renting (36% in 2017).

That bodes well for the Valley. Here, we are No. 3 in the nation for Gen Z home ownership and fourth for millennial home ownership.

. . . According to “Current Conditions: Warren,” a report commissioned by The Raymond John Wean Foundation and prepared by the Greater Ohio Policy Center, we have more evidence that our economy has turned the corner. Consider these numbers for Trumbull County through the first four years of this decade:

• The median age dropped while statewide it rose.

• The population increased 1.12% compared to 0.9% statewide after falling 6.4% from 2010 to 2020.

Consider these numbers for the City of Warren:

• Median income jumped 28% compared to 20% statewide.

• The poverty rate dropped 1.5% compared to 0.4% statewide.

. . . The Youngstown State University Export Assistance Network continues to help the Valley’s economic expansion. We will partner with that office this year to organize a trade mission to India, creating good opportunities for businesses in the lake to river region.

The United States is India’s third biggest investor. The U.S. accounted for 9% of all foreign direct investment (FDI) equity into India in 2023. The U.S. is India’s top overseas FDI destination. India invested $737 million in the U.S. in 2023.

Exporting accounts for 15% of our region’s economy. If we can increase that by just 2%, an additional $500 million annually would be pumped into our economy. That’s why we have ramped up our partnership with the YSU Export Assistance Network.

As summer settles in the Valley, the region offers a season full of possibilities—from breathtaking trails and dynamic art exhibitions, to fun-filled baseball nights under the stars.

Whether you’re a resident or planning a day trip, the region is bursting with ways to stay active, get inspired and reconnect with community and culture.

Here’s your guide to some of the most enriching and entertaining experiences the Valley has to offer this summer:

Cultural Enrichment at the Butler

In the heart of Youngstown, the Butler Institute of American Art continues its legacy as the first museum in the country dedicated to American art. Founded by Joseph Butler Jr., a Youngstown industrialist and passionate collector, the museum has grown into a nationally recognized institution.

The Butler’s crown jewel, Winslow Homer’s Snap the Whip, is a “masterpiece of masterpieces,” drawing visitors from across the country, said Dr. Lou Zona, executive director and curator for the Butler.

“It’s our best-known painting. People come from all over just to see it,” said Zona of the painting, one of the greatest works of art of the 19th century.

But there’s far more to see. Recent additions include a “remarkable” steel sculpture by American sculptor Don Gummer and a massive Pierre Soulages ceramic work—the largest piece of work in America by the French abstract painter. The Butler also boasts a dynamic electronic exhibition featuring spinning lights.

“You definitely need to come experience this collection because it is one of the great collections in the country, if not the greatest American collection in the country,” Zona said of the Butler’s many pieces of art.

Beyond the galleries, the Butler offers a wide range of programming—from art classes for adults and children, to a Senior Art and Learn series for senior citizens and a Stroller Art class for children up to 2 years old.

Nature, Education and Exploration at Mill Creek MetroParks

Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will find their summer sanctuary at Mill Creek MetroParks, a vast and vibrant green space that stretches across Mahoning County.

With more than 35 miles of hiking trails and 17 miles of paved pathways, the park offers something for everyone, from more rugged hikes to accessible scenic strolls.

At the Wick Recreation Area, considered the park’s recreational hub, guests can enjoy deck hockey, tennis, sand volleyball, a par-3 golf course, a wet playground and batting cage—all anchored by a newly renovated recreation center ideal for parties or group events up to 75 people.

“It’s a nice space to go and be able to spend the whole day without having to travel around,” said Jaime Yohman, community engagement director for Mill Creek MetroParks.

The educational crown jewel of the park is the recently revitalized Ford Nature Center, complete with classroom space for programs, a hands-on exhibit room, a history room, gift shop and wildflower and wildlife watching areas. The center also has outdoor classrooms.

Other highlights of the park include:

• Lanterman’s Mill, a historic working gristmill withcsurrounding hiking trails and waterfalls.

• Open-air trolley tours, guided by educators or trained volunteers who share the park’s natural and historical treasures.

• Lake Glacier and Lake Newport, where visitors can drop in a canoe or kayak for a day on the lakes. Canoe and kayak rental is available at Lake Glacier.

• One of the most visited locations at Mill Creek Park is Fellows Riverside Gardens, which offers a huge variety of flowers and multiple vistas, ideal for amateur or professional photographers, or for anyone to take in the beauty of nature.

In addition, golfers can tee off at two 18-hole courses, plus practice on new indoor golf simulators perfect for winter or a rainy summer day at a new player development center.

Medici Museum of Art premiering two exhibitions

Opening July 11 at the Medici Museum of Art in Howland is From Oil to Art: A Rockefeller Legacy Rooted in Industry, Innovation, and Imagination, a world-premiere exhibit that tells a personal and historical story of one of America’s most iconic families.

“This isn’t just an exhibition; it’s a homecoming for the Rockefeller family’s Ohio roots,” said Executive Director Katelyn Amendolara-Russo.

In collaboration with Steven C. Rockefeller Jr.—great-great-grandson of John D. Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil—the exhibition will be presented in three sections:

• One explores the influence of John D. Rockefeller through family artifacts, original oil paintings of formative locations and archival materials never before displayed.

• The second will include artworks from the collection of Nelson A. Rockefeller, the 41st vice president of the United States who was one of the 20th century’s most prolific patrons of European Modernism.

• The photography and calligraphy of Steven C. Rockefeller Jr., whose own artistic practice was inspired by Chinese master Fo Toa, will also be on display.

• The final gallery is devoted to works by Steven’s mother, Anne-Marie Rasmussen Rockefeller, a Norwegian collage artist.

“This exhibition is about more than art. It’s a chance for our local community to see themselves reflected in history, to understand how our story ties into the bigger American narrative,” said Amendolara-Russo.

Also debuting July 11 at the Medici is ZODIAC: Mysterious Power of the Creative, the inaugural show from the Carole A. Feuerman Sculpture Foundation.

This unique exhibition invites celebrity and emerging artists to interpret astrological themes through sculpture, painting and multimedia. The exhibit isn’t limited to zodiac signs—it’s about exploring celestial meaning and creative intuition.

At the same time, there will be a showcase of celebrity artists, including Feuerman, Pilar Zeta and Barbara Segal.

ZODIAC also includes in-person and digital components: panel discussions, artist workshops and a dual-format presentation accessible to audiences worldwide. A highlight of opening night is the unveiling of Justice, a monumental sculpture donated by Feuerman as part of a newly forming outdoor sculpture garden at the Medici.

“ZODIAC marks a powerful step forward in expanding the Medici Museum’s international footprint,” said Amendolara-Russo.

Baseball and Big Fun with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers

For sports fans and families, nothing says summer like an evening at Eastwood Field, home of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Now entering their fifth season in the MLB Draft League, the Scrappers serve as a proving ground for young, draft-eligible players and future pros.

But the real magic? It’s the atmosphere. With $7 general admission tickets, $1 Thursdays that include $1 general admission tickets, hot dog and soft drinks, as well as $2 beers, the Scrappers offer one of the most affordable nights out in town. There are fireworks shows, theme nights, giveaways, discounts for seniors and even canned food drives in exchange for free tickets. And parking is only $5.

“It’s the best entertainment value in town,” said Heather Sahli, general manager of the Scrappers.

Plus, Eastwood Field is a hub for community events and concerts. In fact, the facility hosts more than 200 per year, from college baseball teams like Youngstown State University, to community events and concerts.

This summer, expect:

• “Wrestling Under the Stars” with multiple wrestling superstars wrestling in a ring set up at home plate on July 19. The facility has hosted the event for about 10 years.

• The Miss Americanas, the unofficial Taylor Swift tribute band, will perform Aug. 1.

• A “Rock Never Stops” tribute show is the next day, Aug. 2. It will feature tribute bands Jovi (Bon Jovi), Armageddon (Def Leppard), Rattrap (Ratt) and Rock of Love (Poison).

• Two food festivals: Barbecue & Brews in July and a Mac & Cheese Festival in September.

Eastwood Field also can host private events, from graduation parties to corporate outings.

Flipping fun at Past Times Arcade

Situated inside a former grocery store in Girard, Past Times Arcade allows visitors to enjoy yesterday’s memories today.

The arcade, which has more than 400 classic and current pinball machines and more than 200 classic arcade games, was opened in 2023 by Rob Berk, president emeritus of Berk Enterprises, who had been collecting the games for decades. In fact, Berk has been recognized by Guinness for having the largest collection of pinball machines.

He initially acquired the building on North State Street in Girard as a warehouse for his games but decided, with the urging of his wife, to open the arcade.

“It’s like a step back in time,” Berk said. “The lights, the colors, the sounds, there are so many things there that bring your senses to a peak.”

Admission is $20, which allows players to play for as long as they wish. Past Times also has wristbands, allowing players to leave and return that day, Berk said. The facility has a party room that can accommodate events like corporate and birthday parties, and it also hosts pinball tournaments.

There is a light menu of shakes, hot dogs, chicken fingers and the like. There’s beer and sodas in retro glass bottles available, too.

Aligned organizations form powerful force

In Fedor Hall, a modest brick building on the campus of Youngstown State University, is The Rich Center for Autism, and just across town is its sister organization in mission and impact, Potential Development School for Students with Autism.

Together, they form a powerful force in the region, guiding children and young adults on the autism spectrum toward a future filled with opportunity and dignity.

RICH CENTER AT YSU

What began as a heartfelt mission among three families has grown into a well-respected center of excellence in autism education, research and treatment.

The Rich Center was founded in 1995, born from the dedication of the Kosar, Rubino and Rich (Ricchiuti) families, each with a deep personal connection to autism.

Jerry Kosar, whose grandsons were on the spectrum, sought educational alternatives for them. His nephew, Bernie Kosar, former Cleveland Browns quarterback, played an unexpected role in shaping the vision. While a member of the Miami Dolphins, he connected with Dan Marino, whose own son is autistic, and learned about a university-based autism program.

That planted the idea of building a similar model in Youngstown.

Meanwhile, Jackie Marchionda of the Rubino family was on a parallel journey, searching for resources for her son, Christopher. A mutual connection brought her in touch with the Kosars. Paula and Anthony Rich—Christopher’s godparents and Jackie’s sister and brother-in-law—soon joined the effort. When the Rich family tragically died in a plane crash in 1994, the cause took on new urgency. Their legacy inspired the creation of a center that would change lives.

The Rich Center started as a modest summer program. Today, it serves about 60 students ages 3 to 21, offering year-round services that focus on treatment, education and research. Most students attend classes in the center’s home at Fedor Hall. A few participate in inclusion programs at local schools, reflecting the center’s commitment to tailored, individualized support.

“We are the Rich Center for Autism at Youngstown State University, so we are the only university-based center in this area,” said Executive Director Mike Latessa.

Though it looks like a school, the Rich Center is much more. Staff employ applied behavioral analysis (ABA), speech and occupational therapies and individualized transition plans.

That goal could be transitioning to another school, entering the workforce or achieving independent living. The upstairs independent living lab teaches students essential life skills like cooking and laundry. Staff work closely with families to shape a path that suits each student’s potential.

“In a nutshell, it’s really wrapping our hands around the student,” Latessa said. “When you come in here, you have an individualized need. We’re not saying, ‘We’re going to place you and conform you to the spot.’ We’re going to say, ‘What does your child need, and how can we achieve that end goal—whether that’s returning to another school, gaining independence or joining the workforce?’”

What sets the Rich Center apart is its integration with university life. All employees are YSU staff, and research is a core part of the mission. From graduate theses on caregiving to partnerships with the STEM college at YSU on coding curriculum, students and faculty are constantly working to improve autism care.

“One of the benefits of being on campus is … it opens up the research component. Another nice aspect is the ability to hire undergraduate students and graduate students,” Latessa said. In fact, the center will have nine graduate students next year, the most it has had.

The center is also expanding.

Future plans include a $1.6 million renovation of the Rich Center’s basement, scheduled to start by the end of 2025. It will include a parent resource room, a professional development center and a virtual library.

POTENTIAL DEVELOPMENT

A part of the fabric of the region for more than 70 years, Potential Development School for Students with Autism is an educational institution that has opened its doors to students who often struggle to find a place in traditional settings.

With a deep-rooted commitment to serving the underserved, Potential Development has evolved from a small preschool into a comprehensive, kindergarten through 12th-grade charter school for students on the autism spectrum.

The story began in 1953, when Christine Kline, a physical therapist by trade, founded a small preschool for children with special needs. Kline recognized that too many children—especially those marginalized by race or ethnicity—were being left behind.

It’s that point in Potential Development’s history that Paul J. Garchar Jr., CEO of Potential Development, often raises when talking with parents to emphasize that “ever since then, that value of being an inner-city Youngstown program, dedicated to Youngstown and serving the underserved, has stuck with us for 75 years.”

In 1975, the school was reincorporated as Potential Development, shifting its focus from orthopedic impairments to students with speech, language and behavioral challenges.

As awareness grew in the 1990s, so did Potential Development’s mission. In 2001, it became a non-public charter school, giving families in smaller districts without strong special education programs a valuable new option.

Since then, the school has expanded grade by grade, ultimately launching a full high school curriculum in 2013—the same year it moved into its high school building on Market Street at East Dewey Avenue.

Today, Potential Development serves more than 300 students from Mahoning, Trumbull and parts of Columbiana counties, spread across three buildings: the high school, an elementary/middle school on Market Street at West Dewey Avenue and a preschool on Indianola Avenue.

What makes Potential Development unique is its individual-focused model. Classrooms average just five to six students, allowing educators to tailor instruction to each child’s needs. Every student has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), and in addition to meeting Ohio’s core academic standards, the curriculum emphasizes life skills and personal development.

The school houses sensory rooms—one for high-energy activities like jumping or swinging, another designed for calming stimuli with soft lighting and music. A model apartment helps students learn daily living tasks, while a basement art room, workout space and partnerships with organizations like SMARTS (Students Motivated by the Arts) and PHD Manufacturing in Columbiana enrich their experience.

“We can work with everybody. There is a spot for everybody here,” Garchar said, pointing out that whether a student is academically advanced or needs more hands-on support, they’ll find a place at Potential Development.

Importantly, the school doesn’t just aim to educate— it aims to give its students the full experience of growing up. The school has a mascot —a pirate—chosen by the students, bowling in the fall, basketball, track and e-sports teams and a prom. Students also participate in academic events like the English Festival at Youngstown State University.

“We really wanted to focus on, we always say, even though our kids learn differently in the classroom, we didn’t want them to have to sacrifice typical experiences,” Garchar said.

Some students take the ACT, while others have gone onto post-secondary education. Potential Development is, like The Rich Center, a partner with the STEM college at YSU on coding curriculum.

Boak & Sons, Inc.

Built from the Ground Up

In 1974, Sam Boak, a senior at Canfield High School, launched what would become one of the region’s most respected exterior contracting companies: Boak & Sons, Inc.

Armed with a deep work ethic, a loan from his father’s credit union and an entrepreneurial spirit, Boak turned what began as a home insulation company into a powerhouse in residential and commercial contracting that offers roofing, insulation, sheet metal, siding and gutter services across Ohio and western Pennsylvania.

With nearly 200 employees and a fleet of more than 100 trucks crisscrossing the highways from Cleveland to Pittsburgh, Boak & Sons has become synonymous with quality, reliability and a company culture rooted in respect.

From a Warehouse to a Workforce

The company’s origin story is equal parts grit and innovation.

While attending Youngstown State University, Boak would finish classes, change clothes in a rented Youngstown warehouse, then hit job sites for insulation work, only to spend his evenings giving estimates. The grind left little room for academics—Boak still has six credit hours left to graduate—but that doesn’t bother him in the least.

“I want aspiring young people out there to learn and understand that having a college degree is very good and gets you in many doors, but what gets you in many doors also is your due diligence to want to succeed, and that is something you don’t learn. I think you’re born with that, so those people need to come forward and be those individuals,” said Boak, president.

With vast warehouse space, including one facility the size of a football field, and a headquarters boasting about 8,000 square feet of office space, all on Victoria Road in Austintown, Boak & Sons offers more than just shelter from the elements—it offers a professional home for hundreds of dedicated workers. Many have been with the company for decades, a testament to Boak’s belief in unity and respect between salaried staff and field workers alike.

No Corners Cut

The company operates on a simple premise: Do the job right.

“We have a policy book at Boak, but we only have two rules for the whole company. The first one is safety first, and it always should be. But just as important, is never, ever cut a corner. So we would tell our employees if you think it needs an extra nail, an extra screw or more glue on the seam, just do it,” Boak said.

It’s that type of approach that, Boak said, sets Boak & Sons apart from competitors.

For example, Boak recalls bidding on a roofing project for a local business. Despite coming in $6,000 more than the lowest bid, he won the contract after reminding the owners that the roof they were replacing—installed by Boak & Sons about 30 years earlier—had tripled its 10-year warranty lifespan.

“Our roofs, we do everything we can to stop them from leaking,” Boak said.

The firm was also the first in the Valley to offer full emergency repair services. It’s an attractive service to customers, an insurance policy of sorts that ensures customers aren’t left in the lurch if a leak strikes.

“The whole premise of our business has been differentiating ourselves from our competitors,” Boak said.

Adaptability in a Changing Industry

Boak & Sons’ success wasn’t guaranteed.

After years of steady growth, the company faced adversity around 1979. Increased fuel costs in years prior led to an increase in home insulation demand, but as consumers became accustomed to the higher cost, his business shrunk.

Boak responded not by scaling back but by hustling—knocking on doors, dropping flyers and attending home shows to educate homeowners on the benefits of insulation. He also changed the way he promoted his service, away from fuel savings and more toward home comfort and saving furnace wear and tear.

“If the phone wasn’t ringing, I had to make it ring,” he said.

A key turning point came in the early 1980s when Boak & Sons, which had already been doing some roofing, ventured further into roof installation, spurred by advice from a colleague at Roth Brothers.

Soon, Boak & Sons was installing spray foam roofs on buildings. And when the cost of single-ply roofing caught up to spray foam, Boak & Sons adapted quickly to the industry shift.

And innovation wasn’t just about the materials. Boak pioneered methods like removing siding, rather than drilling through it, to pump insulation into a home’s walls.

“People loved the idea that I wasn’t drilling and plugging,” Boak said.

Culture of Care

At Boak & Sons, success is shared. The company offers full retirement plans, paid vacation and profit-sharing. More importantly, Boak ensures employees feel seen.

That same sense of responsibility extends to the community. Boak and his wife, Donna, are passionate philanthropists, supporting causes like Dylan’s House and funding two scholarships at Youngstown State University.

Their giving has grown over time, reflecting Boak’s belief that “sometimes you need to reach into both pockets.”

The Road Ahead

Having good, qualified people at the company, said Boak, will allow him to make the decisions he needs to make when it becomes time for him to venture away from the business—he trusts his team to carry on the torch.

That’s because, he said, the employees at every level—estimators, clerical staff and field crews—are doing a fabulous job.

Boak & Sons may have started as a modest home insulation company, but it has grown into a standard-bearer for craftsmanship and character. And if Boak has his way, the company’s future will be as solid as the roofs they build.
