History of Wythe and Bland Counties
Wythe County was formed from Montgomery County in 1790. It was named
after George Wythe, the first Virginian signer of the Declaration of Independence. During the Civil War,
the Battle of Cove Mountain was fought in the county.
Prior to Wythe County’s creation, what is now the Wythe County community of Austinville served as
the county seat for Fincastle County, an extinct Virginia county whose borders stretched from Roanoke,
Virginia, to the Mississippi River – a county roughly the size of half the state of Texas.
Wythe County’s Austinville community was founded by Stephen and his brother Moses Austin, father
of the famous Stephen F. Austin. In the 1790s, the Austins took over the mines that produced lead and
zinc; the town was named for the Austin surname, and not for any one particular Austin of the brothers
who bore that surname. Lead was mined and shipped throughout the fledgling country; lead shot was also
produced. Located near Fosters Falls, Jackson Ferry Shot Tower still stands as a testament to the
citizens of Wythe County. Lead was hoisted to the top of the tower using block and tackle and oxen. The
lead was melted in a retort and then poured through a sieve at the top of the tower. The droplets of
molten lead became round during the 150-foot descent. The shot would collect in a kettle of water, and
slave laborers would enter through a 110-foot access tunnel located near the bank of the New River to
retrieve the shot from the kettle.
The lead mines closed in 1982 due to new United States Environmental Protection Agency standards and
the lack of a market for lead. The mines have since filled with water; the main shaft extended in excess
of 1,100 feet straight down.
Another notable area within the county is the unincorporated community of Fort Chiswell - named for a
French and Indian War era fort. The fort and its surrounding buildings served as the county seat until
the incorporated town of Wytheville was established approximately 10 miles to the west. The fort fell
into disrepair, and its ruins were covered over when the intersection of I-77 and I-81 was constructed
in the 1970s. A pyramid marker now stands in the approximate location of the former fort. The community
was named for Colonel John Chiswell who helped establish the lead mines (1757) prior to the
Austin’s purchase.
Wytheville is a town in and the county seat of Wythe County, Virginia. Wytheville’s history
includes the “first female American President,” Edith Bolling Wilson; and Virginia Gov. E.
Lee Trinkle and Col. Robert Enoch Withers. Confederate Generals James Walker and William Terry practiced
law in Wytheville and are buried in the historic East End Cemetery.
In neighboring Bland County, Wolf Creek Indian Village & Museum has meticulously reconstructed wigwams to match the layout of an excavation dating to 1215 AD. Guides demonstrate living skills through the use of handmade replicas of tools and containers, hides and various crafts.
AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MUSEUM
Located within the historic Wytheville Training School. The school was constructed in 1882 for African
American children and was in operation until 1952. Exhibits feature photos, stories and memorabilia that
tell a history of African American education in Wytheville. The Wytheville Training School was built on
land where a Freedmen’s school once stood, shortly after the freedom of the slaves between 1865
and 1866. Sometime between 1880 and 1882, the Freedmen’s school was razed and a new church and
school, as they appear today, were erected.

EDITH BOLLING WILSON BIRTHPLACE MUSEUM
As one of only eight historic sites across the country dedicated to the interpretation of a First Lady,
the museum tells the story of the important role Edith Bolling Wilson played in the White House at a
pivotal moment during World War I. Visit the Birthplace Museum and tour the historic Bolling
Family Home to discover how Mrs. Wilson’s early life in Wytheville prepared her for life as a
First Lady and learn how her stewardship of governmental duties earned her such labels as “the
Secret President” and “The First Woman President.” Periodic special exhibitions focus
on aspects of her influence and interests inside and outside her time in the White house as well as her
life with President Woodrow Wilson and her dedication to his legacy.

GREAT LAKES TO FLORIDA HIGHWAY MUSEUM
The Great Lakes to Florida Highway Museum opened in 2011. The third museum owned and operated by the
Town of Wytheville, it offers visitors a chance to return to the days when the Great Lakes to Florida
Highway (Route 21) was the main route from Ohio to Florida. Original artifacts, newspaper clippings and
exhibits tell the story of the development of Route 21 and Interstate 77. The gas station, which started
out as a Texaco station, was built in 1926. Around 1934, the station changed from Texaco to Esso. Candy
and other snacks were added in the 1940s. By the 1950s, the gas station was phased out, and it became a
small grocery store. Located adjacent to

THE HALLER-GIBBONEY ROCK HOUSE MUSEUM
The home of Wytheville’s first resident physician, the Haller-Gibboney Rock House has played a
significant role in Wytheville’s history since its construction in 1823. Dr. John Haller served
his community as a county doctor, county coroner, and delegate to the Virginia Legislature. During the
140 years that the Hallers and their descendants, the Gibboneys and Campbells, lived in the home, they
responded to the needs of their community by using their home as an infirmary and school during the
Civil War and as a boarding house when Wytheville became a popular summer resort. The purpose of the
Haller-Gibboney Rock House Museum is to preserve its collections, structure and grounds in a manner that
promotes understanding and appreciation of family life in Wytheville within the context of the events of
the 19th and early 20th centuries. Please allow at least 30 minutes for a guided tour.

THOMAS J. BOYD MUSEUM
The Thomas J. Boyd Museum opened in December 1983 and is named for Thomas Jefferson Boyd, who is known
as the “Father of Wytheville.” He was an attorney, town mayor, surveyor, hotel builder and
Virginia legislator. The Boyd Museum contains a large collection of artifacts within exhibits on local
history, the Civil War and the polio epidemic in Wythe County. The Discovery Corner offers 10
interactive stations where children can learn math and science, as well as local history. Please allow
at least 30 minutes for a self-guided tour.

HENRY C. GROSECLOSE FFA MUSEUM
Ceres, Virginia, is a small farming community within Bland County. Ceres gets its name from the
“goddess of grain.” The locals say that anything you plant in the soil here will bear,
and bear well. Apparently, Henry C. Groseclose was in tune with the soil in Ceres. His influence and
hard work laid the groundwork that led to the National FFA Organization (FFA). Groseclose initially
started the FFA in Virginia in 1928. The organization has helped promote farming, family and community
focus, which God gave us as a people to steward. Open by appointment only.

WOLF CREEK INDIAN VILLAGE AND MUSEUM
Based on the Brown-Johnston site since 1970, Wolf Creek Indian Village is a reconstructed Native
American village. The original site existed between 1480-1520 (carbon-dated). They offer both guided and
self-guided tours to the village from spring through fall and have an indoor museum with Native American
artifacts, which is included with tour admission.

STEPHEN F. AUSTIN MEMORIAL PARK
Stephen F. Austin also known as the “Father of Texas” was actually not from Texas at all
but from historic Wythe County. Born in 1793, in what is now known as Austinville, Virginia, Stephen F.
Austin’s parents settled in Wythe County and took over the mines that produced lead and zinc. The
town was named for the Austin family surname, not for one particular Austin brother. The family later
left Wythe County for unsettled parts of Texas.

WALL OF HONOR
The War Memorial was created to honor the memory of those who were either born or lived in Wythe County
and who gave their lives in wars or military actions for the United States of America. The War Memorial
is one of four separate monuments standing tall at the Wall of Honor. The other three include: The
Wounded Warrior Monument, which honors men and women from all branches of the military who returned home
from their services to this country with the physical and emotional wounds of war; the Civic Monument
honors those who have distinguished themselves and brought honor and recognition to Wythe County; and
lastly the Sports Hall of Fame monument recognizes those who were born or lived in Wythe County and have
distinguished themselves in athletics.

BLAND COUNTY VETERANS MEMORIAL
The Bland County Veterans Memorial is located along Wolfe Creek on State Route 61W, just outside of
Rocky Gap in Bland County and about 1 mile from Interstate 77. It was started by a group of interested
veterans with Marvin “Codge” Carver taking the lead role. The Memorial is a “work in
progress” as bricks continue to be added in memory of veterans. The Memorial currently pays
tribute to more than 600 veterans from the Civil War to the present. At the memorial, you may take in
the beauty and peacefulness of the site while resting on a park bench. There is also a vintage railroad
bridge at the park from which many people fish. The park is open dawn to dusk.

You can search the world over and not find another community named Wytheville.

The town of Wytheville is in Wythe County, tucked in the Blue Ridge Highlands region of Virginia. Its
breathtaking landscape includes lush forests, an abundance of water, fields, rolling hills and
surrounding mountains. Add in the active wildlife and farming activity, and it's a perfect Sunday drive
seven days a week! Rich in history and hospitality, Wytheville serves as an important crossroads both
literally and figuratively. It’s a gateway between many population centers and has been a longtime
resting point for the weary traveler. Wytheville’s Downtown Main Street just completed a massive
revitalization project and is the heart of this lovely community.
Wytheville has a famous and fascinating history, boasting a past with everything from the “first
female American president,” Edith Bolling Wilson, to Virginia Governor E. Lee Trinkle to Virginia
Senator Col. Robert Enoch Withers.
Edith Bolling Wilson (1872-1961) was born in Wytheville and was the American first
lady from 1915 to 1921, the second wife of Woodrow Wilson, 28th president of the United
States. When he was disabled by illness during his second term, she fulfilled many of his administrative
duties.
Wytheville is governed by a council-manager form of government with five elected members of the
Wytheville Town Council. The Council employs a town manager and staff who carry out all the duties
required to administer the town government and the services it provides.

Town of Rural Retreat
The unusual name of Rural Retreat often provokes people to wonder where such a name
originated. The origin of this name is perhaps unknown. The present town of Rural Retreat on the Lee
Highway used to exist on the site of Mount Airy (a German settlement of colonial times). History reveals
that this German settlement existed before Wythe County was formed from Montgomery County in 1789.
As time advanced, the area grew from being a frontier settlement and advanced rapidly toward becoming a
great center for the many developing farms. Around 1900, Rural Retreat was beginning to be known as the
cabbage center of the world. Cabbage was its leading product until the 1930s. As the importance of
cabbage declined, the area grew in livestock and dairy farming, with great dairy land producing
high-quality milk. Rural Retreat is the home of Duchess Dairy Products. They produce whole, reduced-fat,
chocolate and strawberry milk at the plant located in the heart of Rural Retreat. The milk that is used
to make high-quality products travels less than 5 miles from the farm to the plant.
Many are realizing that Rural Retreat has one of the most ideal climates for a quiet mountain retreat
to enjoy the cool pleasant summers. Sportsmen find the area to be ideal for recreation, with the 90-acre
Rural Retreat Lake facility with fishing, boating, picnicking, camping, swimming, hiking, bird watching,
a playground, Frisbee golf and some of the most beautiful scenery. Although bountifully blessed in
natural resources, perhaps the greatest blessings of the area are the vigorous, loyal, hard-working
people of the area.
Rural Retreat is 1 square mile with a population of 1,533 and has recently undertaken a major downtown
revitalization effort. The centerpiece of downtown is the restoration of its historic rail depot, where
one of
O. Winston Link’s most famous photographs was taken of the depot in downtown Rural
Retreat.

Bland County
Bland County is located in southwestern Virginia on the border of West Virginia and
gives arterial access to the coalfields of Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky, as well as the
industry’s major suppliers. Bland County is an excellent location for business. Interstate 77 cuts
through the middle of the county, and exits are located near the major communities of Bland, Bastian and
Rocky Gap. The county is known for its two tunnels on I-77, which are located at each end of the county
and offer a memorable experience.
The county has a comprehensive plan, subdivision ordinance and zoning ordinance. Bland is the county
seat, and there are no incorporated towns within the county. Bland County’s government system
comprises a four-member board of supervisors, with one member from each of the following districts in
the county: Sharon, Mechanicsburg, Rocky Gap and Seddon. The county administrator is appointed by the
board of supervisors. All county departments report directly to the county administrator, with the
exception of the constitutional offices. Constitutional officers are elected by the people in general
elections. Bland County government offices are located in the heart of downtown Bland.
The scenic vistas, historical landmarks, outdoor activities and abundant rivers, lakes and streams make
this area a mecca for tourists. Bland County’s churches, schools, 4-H clubs and other social and
civic organizations are active in sponsoring recreational and cultural programs. Portions of the
Jefferson National Forest and the Appalachian Trail are located in the county. Bland County is a proud
member of the Appalachian Trail Community, with 56 miles of the trail traversing the beautiful landscape
of the county. Bland County is also home to the Wolf Creek Indian Village and Museum, a reconstructed
500-year-old Native American site, which was discovered in 1970 during the construction of I-77.
Camping, hunting, fishing, hiking and picnicking opportunities are plentiful. Sporting events and other
activities are available to area residents in addition to plays, concerts, musicals and fairs.

Wythe County
Wythe County and its two incorporated towns, Wytheville and Rural Retreat, along with
a number of smaller communities, are located in southwest Virginia at the crossroads of interstates 81
and 77. The county lies within a day’s drive of half the U.S. population and major industrial
centers. Wythe County is a business-friendly community that’s people-friendly, too. Everything a
business needs to succeed can be found here, as well as assets that make life outside work both peaceful
and full of adventure.
Wythe County offers great opportunities for visitors to enjoy Virginia’s beautiful mountain
scenery and four distinct seasons that are bounded by winters with a little snow and warm summer days. A
variety of outdoor recreational activities like hiking, biking, camping, fishing, horseback riding and
more are all conveniently located near numerous restaurants, lodging, campgrounds and other attractions.
Wythe County is represented on the Virginia Historical Marker Guide, which showcases over 20 historical
markers for residents and visitors to explore Wythe County’s local history.
Over the past two centuries, Wythe County has grown to be an important commercial center in western
Virginia. The entrepreneurial spirit of Appalachia is reflected in its diverse foundation of
locally-owned, small businesses, and the area’s work ethic has bolstered its strong industrial
community with manufacturing clusters in beverage production, automotive components, composite materials
and packaging, to name a few.
Progress Park is one of three industrial parks located here and is the culmination of years of planning and investment by the people and leadership of Wythe County to ensure a viable economic future for coming generations. Planning began more than 20 years ago to develop 1,200 acres near the intersection of I-81 and I-77 and adjacent to the bustling town of Wytheville to create a premier location for growing business and industry. The infrastructure found in Progress Park is as robust as can be found anywhere with rail-served sites and access to major highways mere moments away. Tenants like Gatorade, Amcor, Somic America and others have called Progress Park home for more than a decade with a history of growth and success.

Roads
Interstates 81 and 77 converge in Wythe County and carry approximately 60,000 to 70,000 cars per day.
These major routes connect the coastal South and greater Southeast to the entire Northeast and
near-Midwest. In Bland County, I-77 bisects the county only minutes from the crossroads in Wythe County.
Highway routes 42, 52 and 21 provide a scenic alternative to interstate travel and add a redundant layer
to our transportation network, and competitive fuel prices add to the convenience. The county is known
for its two tunnels on I-77, which are located at each end of the county and offer a memorable
experience.

RAIL
Norfolk Southern’s main line (Crescent Corridor) passes through Wythe County. Several industries
in our area use rail extensively. Additional rail-served industrial sites are available.

Agriculture
A strong agricultural economy exists in Bland and Wythe counties. The market value of
products sold is over $14 billion from 1,300 farms, encompassing over 250,000 acres. Crops include a
wide variety of floriculture including Christmas trees, lavender and hemp. In addition, both dairy and
beef cattle continue to play a large hand in the economy of Wythe and Bland Counties.
Wythe and Bland counties have Virginia Cooperative Extension offices (ext.vt.edu) that provide educational programs in agriculture and natural
resources, family and consumer sciences, 4-H youth development and community viability.
The area is home to several agritourism businesses. Visitors may tour an alpaca farm, a butterfly farm,
a lavender farm to cut fresh lavender or sunflowers, and several pumpkin patches provide fall activities
on the farm for locals and travelers.
Bland and Wythe counties have over 27 Century Farms. The Virginia Century Farm Program recognizes and
honors those farms that have been in operation for at least 100 consecutive years and the generations of
Virginia farm families whose diligent and dedicated efforts have maintained these farms, provided
nourishment to their fellow citizens and contributed so greatly to the economy (vdacs.virginia.gov/conservation-and-environmental-virginia-century-farms.shtml).
The Appalachian Expo Center (APEX) located along I-81 provides a venue for a wide variety of activities

The Chamber of Commerce’s Agriculture Committee strives to connect local farmers with agriculture businesses and organizations, educate citizens on farm-to-table, and award outstanding achievements in agriculture.
Farmers' Markets
There are three farmers markets in the area, where most of the local fruits and vegetables, baked and
canned goods, and many other homemade items can be purchased. Check respective market links for open
dates and times. The Wytheville Farmers Market currently operates bimonthly with additional winter
hours, in addition to normal summer hours, illustrating the importance of locally grown food.

Tourism is a growing industry in Virginia and plays an increasingly important role in
the overall economic development of the commonwealth. Beyond its many economic benefits, tourism is an
industry that closely affects everyone in Bland and Wythe counties.
Wytheville — There’s Only One
You can search the world over and not find another town with the name of Wytheville. Wytheville
(pronounced WITH-vill) was named for the first signer of the Declaration of Independence for Virginia
– George Wythe — and was selected as the seat of Wythe County in 1790. At that time, it was
the junction of two great western roads, the Ingles Ferry and the Peppers Ferry trails. Today,
Wytheville benefits by being at the crossroads for I-77 and I-81, bringing travelers from far and wide.
A Great Meeting Place
Recently renovated, the Wytheville Meeting Center provides a comfortable, sophisticated and
technology-friendly conference facility, where you can expect only the highest level of customer service
because exceeding expectations is the facility’s philosophy. From the Evansham Ballroom seating up
to 1,200 theater-style or 500 for banquets to several smaller rooms for meetings of two to 200, the
Wytheville Meeting Center is a wonderful location for regional, state or multistate conferences and
events.
Outdoor Recreation and Unique HomeGrown Attractions
Long known for the wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities, Wythe and Bland County provide
hiking trails, biking trails, motorcycle routes, scenic rides as well as blueways with the world famous
New River. Whether a fisherman, a hunter, a bird watcher or just an outdoor enthusiast, the area
provides countless opportunities for visitors.
Our attractions include many family friendly options from an alpaca farm, a butterfly farm where you
walk among the butterflies, a lavender farm to cut fresh lavender in season, a drive through zoo with
animals from many continents and a lookout tower with views of multiple states.
Crystal Springs, part of the Blue Ridge Parkway Tracks to Trail program, hosts family friendly hiking
plus a mountain bike terrain area. The New River, being the only river in the U.S. to flow north, is
known for world-class fishing, and the area is home to countless trout streams.
Wythe History, Comes Adventure
The rich history of the area is on view in a wide selection of museums, from Civil War history to the
Polio Epidemic in the 1950s. From musical entertainment to lift the spirit, historic stories to touch
the heart, scenic beauty to dazzle the eyes, and recreational opportunities to challenge your energy,
there’s something for everyone in our communities. The Claw of the Dragon, a 350-mile drive,
provides a challenge for motorcyclists as it loops through the Blue Ridge Mountains, covering parts of
seven contiguous counties with Wytheville as the trail’s central hub.
Stay Awhile
For over 200 years, the Wytheville area has been a resting stop for travelers. So, it’s not
surprising to learn that a community that once was a stop on the “Great Road” to the West
also has a variety of accommodations. From a Boutique hotel and an award-winning B&B, hotels, cabins and
campgrounds, you’ll find choices that fit your needs and budget. With incredible views of the Blue
Ridge Mountains, there are numerous restaurant choices nearby. Many of the properties offer toll-free

Experience Bland County
The scenic vistas, historical landmarks, outdoor activities and abundant rivers, lakes, and streams
make this area a mecca for tourists. The Jefferson National Forest covers much of Bland County and the
Appalachian Trail traverses its ridges and valleys. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue
Ridge Mountains, the county of Bland is a natural wonderland, hosting over 74,000 acres
of the pristine Jefferson National Forest. Bland County offers area residents and visitors a
variety of outdoor recreational assets. Bland County is a proud member of the Appalachian Trail
Community, with 56 miles of the trail traversing the beautiful landscape of the county. Camping,
hunting, fishing, hiking and picnicking opportunities are virtually unlimited. The area is
a hunter’s paradise where bears, deer and small game may be hunted in season. For the
fisherman, brook and rainbow trout are abundant in the small mountain streams, while bass and other
species are found in the larger streams.
The Wolf Creek Indian Village & Museum provides a unique glimpse into the history of the Native Americans. Take a step back in time to the early 1500’s and experience Native American life. Based on the Brown-Johnston archeology site, which was discovered in 1970, Wolf Creek Indian Village & Museum has a reconstructed village based on what is known about the site and its inhabitants. Tours escort you through the village to give you a glimpse into the life of the Eastern Woodland Indians. The gift shop showcases local artisans, and the museum contains many of the artifacts found during the original archaeological dig, which took place during the construction of I-77.

An attractive feature of our area is its affordable lifestyle. House prices are below the national
average, and several new subdivisions are currently being constructed. In relocating, one can find a
variety of choices ranging from apartments, townhouses and traditional subdivisions to private country
living, all within a very short commute to work, shopping, schools, recreation and restaurants. Real

The Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) in Wytheville is a medical facility that functions as a
primary care clinic, providing most common outpatient services, including health and wellness
visits. The CBOC is disability accessible. Mental health services are available, including individual,
group, and family counseling.

Wytheville has added a new housing development for our treasured veterans. Freedom Lane is a community
designed to give back to those who have served our country in the armed forces. It was five years in the
making by Wytheville Redevelopment & Housing Authority, and the 24 units are masterfully designed. Some
of the units are disability accessible and all have appliances, including washers and dryers. There is
also a community house for veterans to use to connect with their neighbors. The development is located

Public Safety
The primary law enforcement agency for Wythe County is the Wythe County Sheriff’s Department,
which is housed in the Wythe County Law Enforcement and Judicial Center, adjacent to the Wythe County
Courthouse. Police departments are located in the towns of Wytheville and Rural Retreat. In addition,
Division Four of the Virginia State Police is headquartered in Wythe County and houses the Wytheville
area office. Bland County also has a sheriff’s department, which covers a wide range of public
safety functions. Rescue squads are strategically located throughout the counties and provide service 24
hours a day. Private ambulatory services are also available.
