Letter from the Village President

There is no place like downtown Wilmette on a summer evening – you’ll find our fabulous restaurants full of diners, and families enjoying live music on the Village Green! Our vibrant downtown is full of life, and we are grateful to all of our business owners who call Wilmette home.

Of course, every home needs a solid foundation, and Wilmette has done an amazing job to support this recent economic development. From designing a welcoming downtown streetscape conducive to gathering with beautiful floral hanging baskets and ornamental tree lighting, to working hands-on to attract new businesses and retain old favorites, and to planning new and exciting events like artist festivals, the annual Wilmette Block Party, and our summer music series, the Village remains committed to supporting and nurturing what has become the “go- to” destination on the North Shore. None of this would be possible without the partnership of the Chamber of Commerce, as well as our residents and visitors who regularly shop and dine here to support local businesses.

Not only is downtown Wilmette buzzing, but our retail corridors from west to east are seeing an amazing revitalization. Edens Plaza’s resurgence, led by Wayfair, is adding healthy, modern fast casual restaurants and exciting retail destinations, and Plaza del Lago, with more than 12 new retail stores and restaurants on the way (some of which are now open) have made Wilmette a top destination for shoppers across the Chicagoland region.

The Wilmette Village Board is the legislative and policy-making body of the village and includes the village president and six trustees. The president and trustees are elected at-large and serve staggered four-year terms. The village code prohibits a village trustee, or the village president, from being elected to more than two four-year terms of office (in addition to election to an unexpired term of 25 months or less). The village board does not receive compensation.

Gillson Park

Wilmette’s Gillson Park is a sparkling gem with 59 acres of beautiful lakefront property ideal for swimming, boating, picnics, bicycling and many other outdoor activities. In 2024, the park was listed in the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Gillson Park and Wilmette Harbor Historic District.

Wilmette Harbor Club

The Wilmette Harbor Club, located in Gillson Park just northwest of the Bahai Temple, includes a clubhouse with both indoor and outdoor dining, a gas dock, and mooring for several hundred boats. Since 1929, the Wilmette harbor’s Sheridan Shore Yacht Club has hosted sailboat fleet racing during the summer months. Wilmette Harbor is also home to the Sheridan Shore Sailing School for both adults and children.

Kenilworth Beach

The scenic Kenilworth Beach overlooks the glistening waters of Lake Michigan. Beach season runs Memorial Day through Labor Day.

When conditions permit for the beach to be open, please keep the following in mind:

•  Season passes are required from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

•  Season passes will not be sold at the beach.

•  Daily passes are not available at this time. 

•  When lifeguards are not present, patrons swim at their own risk.

•  No dogs, glass, alcoholic beverages or fires are allowed.

•  The Kenilworth Beach is also open for weddings and other events. This scenic location is ideal for destination weddings that are not too far from home. There are options for renting parts of the actual beach or terraces overlooking the water.

Dog Beach

Wilmette’s dog beach, located at the south end of Gillson Park, is a popular off-leash destination for many four-footed friends and their owners. Dogs must have a permit to use the Dog Beach. Please note: Dogs must be on leash at all times in Gillson Park while on their way to the dog beach.

Wilmette and Kenilworth are friendly and welcoming communities known for their blend of small-town charm, modern amenities and natural beauty. The villages sit on the north shore of beautiful Lake Michigan – 14 miles north of downtown Chicago, 12 miles from O’Hare, and next door to Evanston and Northwestern University.

Now more than ever, there is interest from both residents and businesses to relocate to the North Shore. With a healthy mix of retail, dining and entertainment offerings in eight unique business districts, Wilmette is a place for businesses to connect with customers, clients and the community as a whole.

Local, regional and national businesses have taken notice of Wilmette’s unique charm and excellent location. The arrival of Wayfair’s flagship brick-and-mortar store in spring 2024 generated great excitement from shoppers eager to browse in person – not just online.

In addition, two exciting new developments are underway that will continue to revitalize the village’s regional shopping destinations: Edens Plaza on the west side and Plaza del Lago at the Lake. New arrivals in Edens Plaza include Uncharted, Plaza del Lago, featuring Spanish-style architecture, was originally built in the 1920s and is one of the oldest open-air shopping centers in the country. Set on the scenic lakefront, upgrades are underway including building restorations, infrastructure improvements and the transformation of second-story residential into two-story retail suites, as well as renewed gathering spaces and lush, layered landscaping. Distinctive art installations and community programming will add to the experience.

An impressive list of planned luxury retailers includes Hermes, Oscar de la Renta, Space 519, James Perse, LoveShackFancy, Cynthia Rowley, Hill House Home, Jenni Kayne, Veronica Beard, Rag & Bone, and Peter Millar.

In 2021, the village embarked on a streetscape improvement project that enhanced public gathering spaces, including outdoor dining opportunities. These attractive outdoor spaces have created an opportunity for restaurant and retail businesses to thrive, while residents and visitors appreciate more ways to spend time outdoors with friends and family.

Vibrant at all times of the day, the Village Center is Wilmette’s central business district. This popular hub of retail, dining and entertainment meets modern expectations while still maintaining Wilmette’s historic, small-town personality. Outdoor dining is an essential component of the Village Center, featuring extensive sidewalk cafes. The Village of Wilmette plays an active role by welcoming patrons to dine picnic-style outside Village Hall and at a shared public-private dining space at Veterans Park in the heart of the downtown.

Wilmette History

The Village is named for early settler Archange Ouilmette, of French and Pottawatomie heritage. Ouilmette’s family moved north from the first settlement in Chicago to a cabin by Lake Michigan on 1,280 acres that were granted to her under the Treaty of Prairie du Chien of 1829.

In Wilmette, you will find many places whose colorful and intriguing histories are intertwined with the larger history of the village itself, including:

•  The 1874 depot, rescued and moved in the early 1970s and now a restaurant

• Romer Park, the local Little League’s 1950s ballpark

•  Wilmette Harbor and Gillson Park, both by-products of a remarkable engineering project undertaken over 100 years ago

•  The brick streets of Wilmette, laid down around 1900 and restored during the Great Depression

Retail Renaissance

Newcomers join longstanding businesses

Wilmette has transformed into a destination, known as one of the top dining spots on the North Shore, and has recently experienced a retail renaissance with numerous businesses – both veteran and newcomers – thriving in recent years.

Wilmette’s central business community began in the mid-1800s in the vicinity of Green Bay Road and Wilmette Avenue. Since then, residents have renamed streets, turned farmland into housing developments, and carried out businesses in the same building for decades, including a 19th-century general store in a building that is still a retail shop. The longevity of numerous downtown businesses, many family owned, is truly remarkable.

“Many businesses have operated in downtown Wilmette since long before there were so many options for a relaxed lunch or dinner,” Pratt said. “The Wilmette Theatre has stood for 111 years. It opened in the summer of 1914 as the Central Theatre.”

By the 1920s, the business district extended two blocks east and west of the Chicago & North Western Railroad depot along West Railroad Avenue (now Green Bay Road). A Carnegie Free Library, built in 1905, stood at Wilmette and Park Avenues and Village Hall stood at the corner of Wilmette Avenue and Central Avenue.

Spanish Court, a late 1920s commercial development designed by Edwin Clark, was extensively remodeled in 1967 to become Plaza del Lago Shopping Center, still located on Sheridan Road. This retail development, along with other developments, altered the character of the lakefront and brought in new retail and multifamily housing to Wilmette.

By the 1970s and 1980s, Wilmette’s business districts were in need of revitalization. The Comprehensive Plan of 1986 addressed these problems and established guidelines for land use and the appearance of commercial development.

Today, Wilmette has several distinct shopping and dining districts, all with much to offer.

Downtown Wilmette, also known as the Village Center, is located east of Green Bay Road and is Wilmette’s central business district and home to many restaurants and specialty stores.

Heading east toward Lake Michigan is Linden Square, which provides convenient shopping and services to neighborhood residents and Purple Line commuters.

The Spanish-inspired architecture of Plaza del Lago, home to restaurants, retail and service businesses, makes it one of the North Shore’s most distinctive shopping centers.

The Ridge Road District is known for its historic character and variety of locally owned restaurants, retail and service businesses.

Edens Plaza, which opened in 1956, is Wilmette’s largest shopping district. Many of the village’s national retailers are located here, between Lake Avenue, Skokie Boulevard and the Edens Expressway.

You know there are plenty of things to do on the North Shore, from shopping and dining to sports and nature, but don’t overlook the arts in Wilmette and Kenilworth!

“It’s part of the fabric of the community,” said Jennifer Herren Gatesman, executive director of the Wilmette-Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce. In fact, Wilmette recently did a survey and found the community wanted even more music. The area has long been home to museums, theaters — including Music Theater Works, and the Actors Training Center, to mention a few.

Location, location, location

Getting to your favorite places has never been easier

With trains, buses, biking and ride-hailing options, there are many ways to get to, from and around the Wilmette and Kenilworth area.

One of the most popular modes of transportation is the CTA’s Purple Line, which can get you around Chicago and to numerous other popular spots. You can get within a few blocks of Millennium Park, Willis Tower/Skydeck Chicago, The Art Institute, The Auditorium Theater, Harold Washington Library, and many more locations throughout the city.

The elevated Purple Line ends at Linden Station in Wilmette, located at 349 Linden Ave. During peak commuting times, there are special Purple Line Express trains to and from downtown Chicago, so you can get where you’re going even faster. Some stops, like Wrigley Field, are only accessible from the express train. For a comprehensive list, visit www.transitchicago.com.

The area is also served by Metra, the suburban commuter rail system for the Chicagoland area, and the Pace bus network.

Metra’s Union Pacific North (UP-N) line stops in downtown Wilmette at 722 Green Bay Road, and in Kenilworth at 400 Richmond Road. GOING GREEN MADE EASY

The North Shore is Committed to Sustainability

There are plenty of electric vehicles and charging stations around the North Shore, and there’s even a Sustainability Coordinator, Lucy Mellen, whose position is shared by five agencies including the Village and the park district.

But even before the Village created a sustainability plan and coordinator, Go Green Wilmette was working to save the environment.

Go Green Wilmette was created in 2006 with a mandate to work collaboratively with existing organizations within the community. Initiatives have been well received by the Village government, businesses, and the public. For example, Go Green Wilmette members organize Styrofoam recycling collections, offer guided bird walks in the spring, and helped create and now maintain native plant gardens in parks throughout the community. Public inquiries concerning a wide variety of topics related to environmental issues are received through their website.

To encourage residents to plant native plants, Go Green Wilmette initiated what became an annual Native Plant Sale, as those plants were not available in stores. Native plants control erosion and provide shelter and food for pollinators, which are essential to crop propagation and thus the food we eat every day. Once established, native plants usually require much less water than non-native plants, prevent erosion, improve air quality and self-propagate, so they do not have to be purchased annually.

The second biggest event is a Native Yard Tour in July at which they showcase yards that feature native plants and unique solutions to residential yard problems like flooding and soil erosion. Last year Go Green Wilmette members were pleased to include new native gardens that the Village installed to help reduce rainwater issues in public parkways in the community.

These cooperative initiatives and events all help the North Shore become a highly sustainable area to live, work and play.

How Can I Make A Difference?

The single best practice that residents can undertake to benefit the environment is to approach every purchase, from takeout sodas to garden shrubs, from clothing and furniture to cars, with a basic set of questions:

•  Can I use my own bags, reusable mug, or container?

• Do I really need this?

• Is there a more earth-friendly alternative?

• Can I buy a used item instead?

•  Is the item, the packaging, or container recyclable or compostable?

•  How long will I want to use it and how will I dispose of it?

Park District’s events and amenities offer fun all year round

Wilmette Park District

Established in 1908, the Wilmette Park District is dedicated to managing and preserving Wilmette’s parks, open spaces, playgrounds and recreational programs. Covering nearly 355 acres of parkland, the District offers more than 3,000 programs and events each year.

The District’s 18 parks include a stunning lakefront with small craft rentals, swimming beaches, picnic areas and a dog beach. Additional features include a preschool, fitness center and an aquatic center with three pools, slides and a diving well. Sports opportunities cater to a wide range of interests, including tennis, pickleball, platform tennis, volleyball, basketball, ice skating and golf.

A highlight of the year is the 3rd of July celebration, featuring the Yankee Doodle Dash 5K in Gillson Park, the Star Spangled Splash at Centennial Family Aquatic Center and an evening of fun and fireworks on the lakefront.
