Welcome to a world of opportunities and possibilities within this publication. This year marks the 110th year the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce has succeeded in promoting economic vitality while connecting our members with the community and government.

As we prepare to exit 2024 and head into 2025, the Torrance business community has a lot to look forward to. We can finally put behind us the election cycle, high inflation, high interest rates and a tight labor market. This gives us an opportunity to work with our fellow business leaders to grow an even stronger economy in the South Bay. I can’t wait to see what opportunities the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympics will bring to our business community.

I am honored to serve as your chairman and work alongside our dedicated Board and staff, who all share the same vision: business growth and a healthy community environment.

Together We Grow: Your Chamber Ambassadors!

The Chamber’s Ambassador Program is designed to pair new members with experienced members who are dedicated to facilitating integration into the Chamber community. Each ambassador is carefully selected and trained to address questions, understand the goals of new members, and promote active participation in Chamber programs. Ambassadors frequently attend ribbon-cutting ceremonies to support newcomers and help establish valuable connections. The Ambassador program focuses on increasing member engagement and expanding their network. Ambassadors ensure that every new member feels welcomed and supported, reinforcing the Chamber’s reputation as the best in the South Bay.

BUSINESS FOR A DAY

Inspiring the Next Generation

Virco Manufacturing Corporation: At Virco Manufacturing, Shery High School students explored the process of creating educational furniture, gaining hands-on insights into manufacturing and the diverse roles that brought products to life.

At the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, we recognize that students often embark on their academic journeys with a passion for a particular major or minor, yet need comprehensive insights into the diverse career opportunities within their chosen field. Many need to be aware of the day-to-day realities, from company culture and salary expectations to the intricacies of tasks involved.

King’s Hawaiian: Students from Shery High School visited King’s Hawaiian during Business for a Day.

The Chamber has partnered with Shery High School through the Foundation Program “Business for a Day.” Students tour local businesses including King’s Hawaiian, Ganahl Lumber, Torrance Memorial Medical Center, VIRCO Manufacturing Corporation, and the DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton. Each tour offers students a firsthand look at how products are made and services are delivered, helping them understand the various employment opportunities available at each site.

Shery High School Students: Through the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Business for a Day, Shery High School students engaged with industry professionals, gaining insights into company culture, daily tasks, and essential skills.

During these visits, students have the invaluable opportunity to interact with business professionals spanning various industries. This interaction goes beyond the confines of a classroom, allowing students to explore the intricacies of different professions. They can engage with professionals, gaining insights into the nuances of company culture, the daily tasks associated with specific roles, and the skill sets required to excel in their chosen fields.

Inspiring Future Business Leaders

The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Jr. CEO Program offers Madrona Middle School students a five-week journey into the world of business. Each session – Business Fundamentals, Cost Models, Product Development, Marketing Strategies, and Customer Engagement – provides students with hands-on learning and mentorship from local business professionals.

At the Business Expo & Showcase, students put their skills to the test by presenting their products to the Torrance business community. Through this program, the Foundation is equipping young leaders with the tools to excel in a global economy. As the Jr. CEO Program continues to grow, it highlights the Chamber’s commitment to education and workforce development for future generations.

CHAMBER ADVOCACY

Advancing Pro-Business Policies for Chamber Members

The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce is an influential advocate for pro-business policies at the local, state and federal levels of government. A staple with advocacy, the Government Affairs Policy (GAP) is a group of business leaders who determine the Chamber’s positions towards public policies that have impacts on business. The Chamber also has leadership representation with several organizations throughout the state.

Annual updates with California legislators are provided to the Torrance area community.

Chamber Members are provided opportunities to meet with candidates and policymakers.

Government Affairs Policy (GAP) members are provided presentations with updated information on local and regional issues affecting the business community.

The California Chamber of Commerce named 13 local chambers of commerce to receive the 2024 Advocacy Champion Award. Accepting the award on behalf of the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce is Ryan Guitare, Communications Coordinator.

Member Programs

Women in Business

Women in Business is a program convening and connecting high-level women leaders in government and business. The goals of the program are to help women leaders create and strengthen a network of allies to champion their work and provide opportunities for professional growth and development.

Business at Noon

A monthly gathering to connect with other business leaders in the Torrance Area and extend professional reach. Business at Noon is held every month at a local chamber restaurant.

Chamber members attend Business at Noon at Slater’s 50/50 where they enjoy lunch, networking, and a raffle drawing.

Military Affairs Council (MAC)

The Military Affairs Council functions as a liaison between the Los Angeles Air Force Base, Fort MacArthur, and the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce. The council works with chamber members, elected officials, and community leaders to advocate for policies that improve the quality of life for the military community. Our advocacy focus includes but is not limited to the following issues affecting active-duty service members, veterans, and their families in the South Bay community: Housing, childcare, jobs, and taxes.

The Chamber launched the Military Affairs Council in 2023 in partnership with Colonel Mia Walsh, Space Base Delta 3, Los Angeles Air Force Base. The Chamber continues its collaboration with the base through advocacy and partnership opportunities.

Torrance Small Business Week

Shop Small began when American Express created Small Business Saturday to encourage support for small businesses back in 2010. It has grown to be a year-round movement that supports small business across the globe, and Small Business Saturday continues to be an annual holiday shopping tradition.

Small Business Saturday is celebrated on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, but the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce has since expanded the idea by starting its own Torrance Small Business Week to encourage residents to shop locally. The chamber runs a media campaign urging businesses, residents and community members to shop locally and support small businesses during Torrance Small Business Week.

In addition, Torrance Small Business Week was featured at a Torrance City Council meeting, emphasizing the importance of supporting and helping local businesses gain more visibility, profitability and credibility. The Torrance Chamber of Commerce also hosts a Torrance Small Business Week Kickoff Celebration where participants can learn about opportunities for small businesses, collect promotional items and network with other small businesses within the chamber.

Lastly, to promote Torrance Small Business Week, the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce hosts an art competition open to all Torrance Unified School District, Ambassador Christian School, South Bay Christian School, and Valor Christian Academy students, grades 6-12. Students submit traditional hand-drawings, paintings, or computer assisted program flyers promoting Torrance Small Business Week. The winning art is displayed in the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce office for the Torrance Small Business Week Kickoff Celebration and throughout Small Business Week.

CONNECTING TOMORROW’S LEADERS

The Young Professionals Group

The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce Young Professional Group (YPG) hosted guest speaker, City of Torrance Mayor George Chen.

The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Group (YPG) is a vibrant network of emerging leaders in the South Bay. YPG hosts monthly events, providing opportunities to connect with peers, explore local businesses and build valuable relationships. Whether it’s enjoying social gatherings or engaging with influential leaders in Torrance, YPG attendees benefit from a supportive community that encourages growth and collaboration.

Ribbon Cuttings

Celebrating Community and Growth

The Chamber of Commerce celebrates members’ achievements and enhances their visibility through ribbon cuttings. These events highlight grand openings, renovations, anniversaries and significant milestones for local businesses, showcasing the Chamber’s commitment to supporting local enterprises. The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce encourages members to spotlight these achievements and foster engagement with elected officials, media and patrons. Everyone is invited to attend and support the businesses that contribute to our community’s vitality.

5K for Freedom in Tribute to Louis Zamperini

Since 2016, the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce has brought to the Torrance community a significant, meaningful and family friendly race called the 5K for Freedom, a partnership with UCLA Health and Village Runner. Each year, a different military branch is honored for their service – most recently, the newest branch, the United States Space Force.

The 5K for Freedom provides an opportunity for military branches to interact with civilians – from older veterans to children who are just learning to run. Each year, there have been more than 1,000 runners, joggers and walkers all lined up on Madrona Avenue, ready to ‘GO!’ at the sound of the flash bang!

Prior to the beginning of the race, recognition is given to those serving, or those who have served. Presentations are made to these individuals by the mayor, local legislators and the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce.

After the race, the runners are welcomed at the Expo area to learn about Torrance area businesses, sample food and enjoy a pancake breakfast.

Last but not least, the male and female race winners are invited to ride in the Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade which occurs directly after the race. This parade is in coordination with the Torrance Armed Forces Day Celebration, the longest running military-sanctioned event of its kind west of the Mississippi.

The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce commends the efforts of the City of Torrance, the Torrance Police Department, and the Armed Forces personnel who work tirelessly to make the weekend-long festivities an incredible celebration of community in Torrance.

BUSINESS EXPO & SHOWCASE

An Evening of Endless Opportunities

This is an annual chamber event where more than 90 local businesses, restaurants, non-profit organizations and entrepreneurs showcase their goods and services. This year, the chamber’s Jr. CEO program, a five-week initiative course designed to introduce middle school students to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and business, will showcase their final products at the expo.

With the wide variety of businesses and organizations that are in attendance, it is a great representation of local business in the South Bay. Plus, the event is fun. The chamber chooses a different theme each year – and most recently it was Halloween-themed. To draw people to their booth, you will find that many businesses make their booths interactive with games, samples, promotional items, etc. We hope to see you at our next Business Expo & Showcase!

Signature Events

State of the Region

The 2024 State of the Region welcomed Congresswoman Maxine Waters of the 43rd District and Congressman Ted Lieu of the 36th District to address the local community about challenges both short and long-term. Topics included infrastructure, artificial intelligence, economic opportunities, and the housing crisis concerning the South Bay Region.

State of the City

City of Torrance Mayor George Chen and the Distinguished Citizen of the Year honoree Mr. Robert Virtue, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Virco Manufacturing Corporation at State of the City.

Mayor George Chen utilizes the State of the City to address important topics that include growth and enhancements within the City of Torrance, accomplishments that the city has achieved over the last year, and the direction the city will be taking to ensure business and community success. The Chamber also honored Mr. Robert Virtue, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Virco Manufacturing Corporation with the Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award. Since 1953, the Chamber has annually selected the Distinguished Citizen of the Year whose achievements have been significant to the community and to the general welfare of the people of Torrance.

Torrance Fire & Police Department Community Update

Annually, the Chief of Fire and the Chief of Police provide an insightful update on their departments, offering the latest information and developments. Additionally, in partnership with the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, members from Fire and Police are recognized for their valiant actions.

Japan Business Association (JBA) and
Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) 25th Annual Grand Mixer

To commemorate 25 years of continued professional partnership with the Japan Business Association (JBA), the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce joined with JBA at the Miyako Hybrid Hotel for a fun evening of networking, bingo, tabletop displays, and delicious food. The evening featured distinguished guests, including the City of Torrance Mayor George Chen, Consul General of Japan Kenko Sone, and Mayor of Oshu Japan Jun Kuranari.

This event honors the achievements and leadership of select Torrance area women and featured keynote speaker Janice Hahn, County of Los Angeles Supervisor of the Fourth District. The 2025 luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, March 6th at Sunrider International and will honor several select Torrance area women.

Coastal Cleanup Day

The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce annually partners with the City of Torrance and Heal the Bay for Coastal Cleanup Day! Many volunteers comb Torrance Beach, picking up trash and recyclables, as part of Coastal Cleanup Day. This is more than just picking up trash, it’s an opportunity for the community to demonstrate its desire for clean water and healthy marine life. It is a moment to share with one’s neighbors, family, and friends, - coming together to accomplish something vital and worthy on behalf of our environment.

Volunteers at Coastal Cleanup have the opportunity to apply leadership, organizational and communication skills, as well as work directly with team members, city staff, elected officials, the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Torrance community.

Health and Happiness Fair

A chamber event that provides information regarding medical services, education, and resources to the community. The 2024 Health and Happiness Fair had 55 booths in total ranging in businesses such as hospitals, senior care, dental, orthodontics, physical & occupational therapy, veteran clinics, gyms and banking.

Holiday Mixer

Scott Robinson Honda graciously hosts the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual holiday mixer, bringing together members for a fun evening of networking, entertainment by S’cool Daze, and an ugly sweater contest.
