Welcome to the Chamber of Commerce of the Tonawandas. As President of the Board of Directors I want to extend a welcome to our area on behalf of the entire board and the new Executive Director. We are committed to bringing out the best in the Tonawandas and all that our area has to offer. Our goal is to provide support, service and networking to our local businesses in order to promote economic growth in the Twin Cities.

Businesses today are facing an ever-increasing challenge with high costs of supplies and services. Meeting the needs of customers and staff is getting harder and requires tremendous support from the Chamber of Commerce. We pledge our support to all businesses and welcome any new members to join the Chamber.

Located on the Erie Canal leading to the Niagara River, our waterways provide a unique experience for seasonal boaters. We are strategically located between Buffalo and Niagara Falls. We are situated along the famous Niagara River and the Erie Canal and are noted for a spectacular waterfront that provides endless possibilities and outstanding attractions for visitors — including those coming by boat.

At Gateway Harbor along the Erie Canal, you can take part in endless summer events. Besides free concerts by local and nationally-recognized bands, there are numerous other events that will be highlighted in this publication. We are truly a versatile and memorable gateway. Area Attractions

1.  Gateway Harbor and Visitors Center: Sweeney Street and Webster Street North Tonawanda/ www.the-tonawandas.com: and Gateway Harbor 1 Young St., Tonawanda: tonawandasgatewayharbor.com/. Welcome to the Tonawandas Heritage Tour! Gateway Harbor is one of seven major harbors along the New York State Canal System, welcoming over 5,000 boats annually.

2.  Long Homestead: 24 East Niagara St., Tonawanda: tonawandashistory.org/Benjamin-LongHomestead.html, 716-694-7406. An early home and Sunday school, the Historical Society of the Tonawandas operates this restored 1829 homestead.

3.  Tonawanda Armory/Castle: 79 Delaware St., Tonawanda: tonawandacastle.com, 716-743-8544. Listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, it was built in 1896 for Tonawanda’s 25th Separate Company of the NY National Guard.

4.  Tonawanda City Cemetery: Across from 486 Main St., Tonawanda: between Park and Fuller: tonawandashistory.org/gravestone_inscriptions. In the 1860s, three new cemeteries were established in the Village of Tonawanda.

5.  Old Tonawanda High School: 284 Main St., Tonawanda: 716-692-2322. Designed by famed Buffalo architect, E. B. Green, as a high school, this National Register site is now a senior housing complex.

6.  Historical Society of the Tonawandas: 113 Main St., Tonawanda: tonawandashistory.org, 716-694-7406. Housed in an original passenger station for the New York Central Railroad, the Society displays artifacts form the Tonawandas’ early history.

7.  Old City Hall, Police Station, and Historic Main St.: 60 Main St., Tonawanda: Built in 1909 as the Odd Fellows Temple. Afterward, the building was leased to the city for use as the City Hall and police station and remained as such up to 1934. Thereafter it housed American Legion Post 264 for several decades. The remainder of the buildings on the west side of Main St. were constructed in the early 20th century.

8.  Saint Francis Chapel: 73 Adam Street, Tonawanda: www. stfrancistonawanda.org/chapel, 716-693-1150. Built in 1862 by the voluntary efforts of parishioners under the leadership of Reverend Francis Stephen Uhrich.

9.  Niawanda Park/Erie Canal Bed: tonawandacity.com/residents/parks. This linear park stretches for close to a mile along the Niagara River and is actually the former bed of the portion of the Erie Canal that connected Tonawanda to Buffalo.

10.  Private Ryan/Band of Brothers Memorial: 200 Niagara St., Tonawanda: tonawandacity.com/residents/parks. Located behind Tonawanda City Hall along the riverfront, this monument was erected in 2010. It honors all those who have served in the military in our community. There are two monuments specific to Tonawanda veterans for their heroic services during WW II. First is William “Skip” Muck, who was a key member of the Army unit that formed the basis for the book and movie, Band of Brothers. The second monument commemorated the four Niland brothers, who were born and raised right here in Elmwood Park. The Niland brother’s story was the basis for the movie Saving Private Ryan.

11.  Raymond Klimek Veterans Park: 700 River Road, North Tonawanda: ntparksrec.com/info/facilities/default. This peaceful park and fishing pier along the Niagara River is home to major memorials to the United States Navy Seabees and the United States Marine Corps.

12.  Our Lady of Czestochowa Roman Catholic Church: 57 Center Avenue, North Tonawanda: rcct.faith/olc, 716-693-3822. This Parish was established by the Polish immigrants who settled in North Tonawanda in the 1880s and desired to have a Parish where the language of their forefathers could be spoken.

13.  Wurlitzer Company: 908 Niagara Falls Boulevard, North Tonawanda: thewurlitzerbuilding.com, 716-698-9044. In the late 19th and 20th centuries, the Wurlitzer Company was known throughout the world as a leading manufacturer of musical instruments, beginning with the production of band organs to be shipped with Herschell carousels. Our North Tonawanda factory was the world’s largest musical instrument plant.

14.  North Tonawanda City Market: 365 Payne Ave., North Tonawanda: ntmarket.org. The North Tonawanda City Market, also known as the Farmers’ Market, was established on April 23, 1908. It has been in continuous operation since that day.

15.  Power Building: 499 Robinson St., North Tonawanda. This building played a vital role in North Tonawanda’s history. The first transmission of AC electrical current came through North Tonawanda in 1895. The industrialization of North Tonawanda was powered by this 25-cycle current.

16.  Ghostlight Theatre: 170 Schenck St., North Tonawanda: www. starrynighttheatre.com, 716-743-1614. Built in 1890 as the Evangelical Freidens Church to serve the German immigrant population, this edifice now houses an award winning regional theater group.

17.  Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum: 180 Thompson St., North Tonawanda: www.carrouselmuseum.org, 716-693-1885. This 1905 National Register site of the Allan Herschell Company, which made carousels and amusement rides that were shipped all over the country. It currently houses the museum that interprets this history.

18.  City Hall/Sweeney Cemetery: 216 Payne Ave, North Tonawanda: www.northtonawanda.org, 716-695-8995. The cemetery is the resting place for many prominent early citizens of North Tonawanda. The city hall is the 1929 “new” site of city government and police station.

19.  Goundry Street Homes: 332 Goundry St., North Tonawanda. Originally the Humphrey House, this house typifies the numerous large homes built by the lumber barons of the late 19th century. From this home, you may wish to explore more of the homes on Goundry Street and neighboring streets.

20.  Carnegie Art Center: 240 Goundry St., North Tonawanda: carnegieartcenter.org, 716-694-4400. Built in 1903 as a public library with funds from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation, this National Register site now houses a contemporary art center.

21.  US Post Office: 141 Goundry St, North Tonawanda: www.postallocations. com/ny/north-tonawanda/north-tonawanda, 716-799-6801. This historic building, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, was designed by Oscar Wenderoth of the Office of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury Department. The two-story building was built in the Classical Revival style and features a colossal central portico with two pairs of coupled columns resting on granite pedestals and an elegant domed cupola.

22.  Railroad Museum of the Niagara Frontier: 111 Oliver St, North Tonawanda: nfcnrhs.org, 716-694-9588. Once a freight house for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad, this site now houses the Railroad Museum.

23.  Richardson Boat Company: 390 Sweeney St, North Tonawanda. In 1909 G. Reid Richardson founded the Richardson Boat Company in North Tonawanda to build high-quality boats at a reasonable price. Until 1962, many types of water craft were produced here, including cruising vessels, sailboats, runabouts, racing boats and military landing craft during the war years.

24.  Rand Building/Railroad Bridge: 162-184 Sweeney St., North Tonawanda: remingtontavern.com/wordpress/about-us, 716-362-2802. This industrial complex once housed the Herschell-Spillman Company and the Remington Rand Company.

25.  West Herr Riviera Theatre: 67 Webster St., North Tonawanda: rivieratheatre.org, 716-692-2413. A 1926 Shea’s theater, “The Riv” houses the original “Mighty Wurlitzer” theater organ demonstration model at tour site #13. Webster Street was named for Daniel Webster, who served in the House of Representatives, the US Senate, and as the US Secretary of State.

26.  Historic Webster St.: 4 Webster St North Tonawanda. At 4 Webster St., the former Niagara Power Building now houses Buffalo Suzuki Strings (buffalosuzukistrings.org, 716-743-8728). The building was designed by E.B. Green and was opened in 1929. Also of significance is the Dick Block Building at 64 Webster St., built in 1891.

Rules and Information

•  Tonawanda Harbormaster: (716) 743-8189

•  All boaters must register at the harbormaster office and pay docking fees upon arrival.

•  Boaters must pay daily. If planning a multiple night stay, boaters can pay the lump sum upfront but will not be permitted to pay at the end of a stay.

•  Any boater who has docked for more than 2 hours and hasn’t submitted payment, will be subject to being towed at the owner’s expense.

•  Stays are limited to five nights in, seven nights out. This covers both sides of the Canal and includes boats rafting. Other stays are based on proportionate days; 1 in 2 out, etc.

•  Park is open May 1-Oct. 30. Quiet hours are 11 p.m.–6 a.m. as per city ordinance.

•  The cities of North Tonawanda and Tonawanda are not responsible for security of any boat or personal possessions.

•  Any dogs or pets must be leashed and under owners’ control. Pets must be kept on boats during concerts and special events.

•  Glass containers are prohibited.

•  Garbage must be disposed of in proper receptacles. There is to be no repair of boats or discarding of construction materials in the park.

•  Disorderly conduct or excessive noise are prohibited, and are grounds for removal from the park/docking area.

•  Firearms and fireworks are prohibited.

•  All walkways and seating areas must be kept clear and open for the public. Tents, grills, and personal items cannot be set up in the public dock seating areas.

•  Fueling of boats is not permitted in the park.

•  No dumping or pump outs permitted.

Navigation Season & Operating Hours

The New York State Canal System Operates in 2022 from mid-May through mid-October, weather permitting. Operation of Canal System segments is subject to the latest water and weather conditions. The standard hours of operation are 7 a.m.-5 p.m.

Cayuga-Seneca Canal — 12 miles (including Cayuga Lake to Ithaca and Seneca Lake to Watkins Glen and Montour Falls: approximately 90 miles.)

Locks & Bridges —There are a total of 57 locks and 17 lift bridges on the Canal System (including the lateral canals).

Navigational Aids

Navigational aids on the New York Canal System conform to the U.S. Coast Guard lateral system of buoys (red right return). Note that the buoys reverse from red on starboard (right) to red on port (left), north of Champlain Canal Lock 12 at Whitehall, and on the entire length of the Oswego Canal. Failures and displacements of navigational aids may occur. Please report discrepancies in navigational aids to Canal staff.

Navigation Charts

The New York State Canal Corporation recommends that boaters carry the latest edition of navigation charts on board — Chart #14786. Charts may be downloaded from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) — https://charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/14786.shtml and at some local bookstores, marinas and boat chandleries. Charts may also be downloaded from the rightmost column of the Navigation Information page on www.canals.ny.gov. There are no NOAA charts available between mile 222 and 337 of the Erie Canal (including the Genesee River). For these waterway reaches mapping from the Canal Corporation Cruising Guide is posted instead.

Customs

Masters of foreign flag vessels must report arrivals immediately to U.S. Customs at the first U.S. port of entry. Boaters entering Canadian waters must contact a reporting station at their first opportunity.
