Welcome to the vibrant city of Temple, Texas—where tradition meets progress and community spirit thrives. As the President and CEO of the Temple Chamber of Commerce, I am honored to present our 2023-2024 Community Profile & Business Directory magazine, a testament to the remarkable journey the greater Temple community has taken during my tenure.

Over the years, Temple has transformed into a dynamic hub of economic activity, attracting businesses, entrepreneurs and investors from near and far. It has been a privilege to witness the growth and evolution of our local economy, and I am immensely proud of the accomplishments achieved together.

From our historic downtown district, filled with charm, to our cutting-edge medical facilities and diverse industrial sector, Temple offers a range of opportunities. Our business community is a vibrant tapestry woven together by hard work, resilience and ingenuity.

One of the hallmarks of Temple is the dedication and collaboration among our business leaders, community organizations and government entities. Through our Chamber of Commerce, we have fostered a spirit of unity and cooperation, bringing together businesses of all sizes to work towards common goals. Did you know that the word “cha” means “tea” in Chinese? For Jaja and Devin, co-owners of Cha Community, this name holds a special meaning that reflects their mission. Cha Community is more than just a boba tea business; it is a platform for bridging cultures, fostering collaborations and offering premium beverages.

During their time at Baylor University, Jaja and Devin noticed the absence of an Asian American community in Central Texas. They were determined to bring Taiwanese and Chinese culture to the region in a meaningful way. Additionally, they discovered a lack of high-quality boba tea available locally. Devin explains that boba tea holds the same significance in Asian countries as Starbucks does in the West. Inspired by this, they opened Waco Cha at the Waco Downtown Farmers Market.

From its humble beginnings at the Farmers Market, Waco Cha transitioned to a trailer before finally opening its first storefront in 2020. In 2022, Waco Cha rebranded as Cha Community, and they recently unveiled their second store in downtown Temple. Jaja and Devin are ecstatic to be in Temple, as it presents an opportunity to promote diversity, empower others and cultivate a sense of belonging. Collaborating with fellow small businesses in the area is a passion they hold dear.

Beyond offering a wide selection of delectable and high-quality tea, Cha Community also serves coffee, lemonade, dumplings and noodles. In 2023, they introduced their dumpling line in Temple and plan to host workshops where attendees can learn to make these delightful treats from scratch.

Make sure to visit Cha Community and indulge in one of their most popular beverages, such as the Milky Way Thai Tea or the Galaxy Lemonade. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss!

Economic Development Growth & Development In & Around Temple

For businesses seeking a thriving community to establish roots, invest, grow and generate employment opportunities, Temple, Texas stands out as an exceptional choice. With its population of more than 87,000, Temple offers a close-knit city experience at the heart of the state. Temple has made significant investments in infrastructure and quality of life, creating an environment where businesses can flourish and achieve remarkable goals.

One of Temple’s greatest assets is its location. Positioned 45 minutes north of Texas’ capital on the I-35 corridor and at the crossroads of the planned I-14, Temple provides easy access to major markets such as Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Houston. In fact, Temple is within three hours of 80% of Texas’ population, making it a strategic hub for businesses.

In terms of preparedness, Temple has set the stage for businesses to thrive. The city welcomes emerging entrepreneurs, established businesses and startups alike. Temple’s commitment to business growth has resulted in significant economic development. Over the past five years, the city has seen approximately $700 million in proposed and completed projects. Temple’s Economic Development Corporation reports a 19% increase in jobs from 2009 to 2019, showcasing the city’s capacity for fostering employment opportunities.

Moreover, Temple offers an attractive environment for businesses due to its affordable cost of doing business, which is 20.1% below the national average. The city boasts exceptional healthcare services, top-notch schools, a vibrant downtown historic district, a highly educated workforce and effective municipal leadership.

Temple’s success stories further demonstrate the strength of its business community. Notable companies headquartered in Temple include Artcobell, Datamars, Scott & White Health Plan, Wilsonart, McLane Company, PDI and Texell. These businesses contribute to the community’s economic vitality and exemplify the commitment of existing enterprises to invest in Temple’s growth.

Recent examples of significant investments include H-E-B, which expanded its distribution facility with a 325,000 square foot addition to accommodate its new automated frozen food distribution line, and FedEx Ground, which built a 250,000 square foot distribution center across 52-acres of land, an investment of more than $40 million.

Beyond its economic prowess, Temple offers a high quality of life that businesses and residents appreciate. The city’s historic downtown district is a hub of small businesses, including microbreweries, artisanal food shops, cafés, restaurants, boutiques and other unique venues. HEART OF TEMPLE

Downtown Renaissance-Development

A thriving downtown is a vital aspect to growth and continued prosperity of any city. Downtown is where members of all parts of the community come to work, meet for events, socialize, dine and shop at unique businesses.

The National Main Street Center states that downtown areas account for roughly 3% of land area in the typical U.S. community but provide about 30% of the jobs, 90% of the tax revenue and 70% of the public space in the community.

Over the last decade, Downtown Temple has gained renewed attention from public officials and private investors in continual improvements and investments to reignite the soul of the city.

In 2012, the City of Temple and the Temple Reinvestment Zone initiated a Downtown Master Plan project. This plan has been the catalyst for revitalizing Downtown Temple.

Construction began in 2017 on the Santa Fe Plaza, Santa Fe Market Trail and First Street Improvement projects that infused a $15 million public investment into Downtown Temple. These projects were completed in 2021 and have created attractive, safe and accessible public spaces for the community.

According to the International Downtown Association, for every dollar invested in a downtown development, there is a return of between $3 and $10. The increase in economic activity is driven by new businesses, more employment opportunities and further investment in the area.

The public investment in First Street included enhanced lighting, pedestrian access and landscaping to beautify the street corridor. Before the First Street improvement project, most buildings were empty and the streets were desolate.

These public improvements spurred enormous economic growth. Today, almost no unrenovated buildings exist on First Street, and it is one of the most desirable places for people to grab a coffee, have brunch, or shop at the elegant Lenna Lane Boutique and Hat Bar.

“A rising tide lifts all ships,” said Bo Harvey, co-owner of Treno Pizzeria & Taproom, a local restaurant on First Street in Downtown Temple. “The City was reinvesting in Downtown, and we saw potential to invest in an offering that lifts the community.”

Treno Pizzeria & Taproom opened in Fall 2020. They serve artisan-style wood-fired pizza and fresh salads made with local greens, among other fresh-food options. The restaurant also offers self-serve beer and wine taps with local craft selections, an in-house coffee shop and roastery called First Street Roasters, an outdoor lawn space with a music stage, a big screen TV, plus two playgrounds.

“My partners and I asked ourselves this question: are we creating places where we want to go and take our kids?” continued Harvey. “If our kids are happy, it is a family-friendly place we can picture ourselves and the community enjoying, with the potential to be profitable. It’s a win-win.”

Harvey and his restaurant business partners, Bruce, Jacob and Carleigh Bates, employ nearly 50 people in Downtown Temple with two unique restaurant offerings, Treno Pizzeria & Taproom on First Street and Bird Creek Brewing on Fourth Street.

As a Temple Native, Harvey is committed to investing in Downtown and hopes to be a curator of downtown offerings, be it individually or in a partnership. He is partially or wholly involved in multiple real estate endeavors, purchasing and refurbishing buildings. These ventures facilitate opportunities for other businesses to relocate Downtown. The office space in which West Webb, Allbritton, and Gentry PC, is now located is just one example.

A crane and scaffolding currently make up part of the downtown cityscape. These signs of progress are part of a new public and private investment called the Downtown City Center Project which is included in the Downtown Master Plan.

This plan, brought to life in multiple phases, includes constructing two parking garages. Construction on the two structures began in late spring 2022 and will add more than 600 parking spaces to Downtown. The parking garages are on First and Fourth Street, with estimated completion in fall 2023.

Another component of the Downtown City Center Project is the redevelopment of the Hawn Hotel, the Arcadia Theater and the Sears building (HAS Development). This redevelopment is an example of public-private partnership where both parties benefit.

The City of Temple is able to direct development according to the Downtown Master Plan, and the private sector, per an economic development agreement approved by Temple City Council, receives an incentive for the development.

Turner Brothers Real Estate is executing the HAS Development project that began construction in fall of 2021. The redevelopment project includes renovating the Hawn and Sears buildings into for-lease apartments, with the lower floors of the buildings to include retail space. The Arcadia Theater renovation includes transforming it into a venue for everything from live music to lunch meetings.

According to Jonathan Garza, Director of Development for Turner Brothers Real Estate, there are 26 apartment units on the second floor of the old Sears building, and 31 apartment units on the upper eight floors of the Hawn.

“The Sears and Hawn projects will also include about 32,000 square feet of restaurant, retail, and office space,” Garza continued. “Plus, the renovated Arcadia will add to the entertainment options. With all the great restaurants already in the area, the Arcadia will provide another reason to spend an evening Downtown.”

Construction on the HAS Development project is anticipated to be complete this year. Other phases of the Downtown City Center Project will include street improvements, landscaping, and signage.

Downtown development is part of the reason Temple is experiencing what can only be considered a Renaissance.

An Ideal Escape from the Daily Grind

Nestled in the heart of Central Texas, the Temple area offers a perfect blend of delightful weather and an abundance of outdoor recreational activities, making it an idyllic retreat from the monotony of everyday life. From breathtaking parks and scenic trails to invigorating water sports, boating, fishing and wildlife viewing, Temple presents a haven for the entire family to indulge in nature’s wonders.

Water Lovers: Dive into Adventure

The state-of-the-art Lions Junction Water Park is a premier attraction within Temple. Featuring a 300-foot lazy river, two thrilling 30-foot water slides, a beach-entry pool and a deep-water pool, complete with a diving board and rock-climbing wall, this water park magnetizes families from all over Central Texas.

When the heat gets intense, families can enjoy a quick and refreshing cooldown at one of Temple’s various splash pads. Ferguson Park houses an interactive splash pad with eleven colorful sprayers enthralling children (of all ages!). Similarly, Miller Park and West Temple Park offer delightful splash pads throughout the summer. Moreover, the City of Temple operates four public pools across town, providing additional options for aquatic leisure.

Lakeside Bliss: Belton and Stillhouse Hollow Lakes

A mere 3 miles beyond Temple’s city limits, Belton Lake sprawls across 12,385 acres along the Leon River. A vital water supply, a sanctuary for fish and wildlife, and a recreational paradise, Belton Lake is a true gem. The lake offers a range of amenities, including boat ramps, lakeside marinas, bank fishing access, swimming areas, camping spots, picnicking sites, scenic hiking trails and prime locations for wildlife enthusiasts.

Temple Lake Park at Belton Lake caters to swimmers with its designated swimming area, sandy beach, restrooms, picnic tables, boat ramps and a group shelter. Operated year-round by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this park charges a small entry fee to maintain its facilities and ensure an exceptional experience.

Adjacent to Temple lies Stillhouse Hollow Lake, a breathtaking reservoir nestled within the Belton/Salado area. With over 58 miles of pristine shoreline, this 6,430-acre lake showcases a splendid array of activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, camping, picnicking, scenic trails, birdwatching, two charming parks and a lakeside marina. The opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts are endless.

Thrilling Adventures: Extreme Sports and More

For those seeking adrenaline-pumping experiences, Temple offers an assortment of extreme sports. At Miller Springs Nature Center, rock climbing and mountain biking enthusiasts can revel in a 260-acre scenic natural area between the Leon River and striking 110-foot-high bluffs near the Belton Lake Dam. This remarkable region features awe-inspiring scenic overlooks, winding trails, serene waterways and abundant wildlife.

Outdoor Fun for All: Pristine Parks and

Recreational Gems

Temple prides itself on its immaculate parks and state-of-the-art recreational facilities. With an extensive network of over 25 miles of walking, hiking, and biking trails, playgrounds and various fitness opportunities, Temple seamlessly integrates recreation into an active lifestyle. The city organizes family-oriented programs, including youth camps, athletic leagues, a bark park for furry friends, pickleball courts and disc golf courses.

Recently unveiled in West Temple, Crossroads Park is a 260-acre state-of-the-art recreation complex. Operated by the City of Temple, this facility boasts baseball, softball, and soccer fields, tennis courts, a 27-hole disc golf course and other amenities. As a regional hub for recreational athletics, Crossroads Park attracts a diverse range of sports tournaments, fostering a vibrant sports culture within Temple.

In addition to Crossroads Park, Temple houses two additional disc golf courses at South Temple Community Park and Lions Park. These courses offer thrilling and challenging games.

One of Temple’s highlights is the nationally recognized walking trail at Lions Park. This trail combines two distinct trail types. It meanders through a lower park section, revealing wetlands and a picturesque pecan grove. Along the hillside, walkers enjoy a cedar grove, a serene fishing pond, inviting pavilions and a captivating view of Temple. Lions Park also features the Rotary Club of Temple South Accessible Playground, designed to cater to children of all ages with disabilities and the Central Texas Bark Park.

Fort Cavazos

A Strong Partnership

Fort Cavazos, a sprawling U.S. Army base outside Temple, has cultivated a long-standing and mutually beneficial relationship with the city. This partnership has resulted in numerous advantages for both residents and soldiers. The base encompasses 335 square miles of Bell and Coryell counties, positioned 60 miles north of Austin and 50 miles south of Waco, and supports multiple units, a corps headquarters and an active mobilization mission.

The base is home to over 37,000 active-duty soldiers and airmen, along with over 75,000 family members who contribute to the local economy by shopping, dining and enjoying Temple and neighboring communities. The base trains approximately 22,000 reserve soldiers annually, making it a significant hub for military personnel.

Fort Cavazos’ influence extends beyond the military realm supporting an estimated 507,000 individuals, including retirees and civilians working on the base. Since its establishment over 75 years ago, Fort Cavazos has played a crucial role in training soldiers for various military operations such as the Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm and deployments following the September 11 attacks.

The base continually updates its facilities to offer state-of-the-art training opportunities. Notable among these is a mock European village constructed in the 1980s, designed to prepare soldiers for urban combat scenarios. Additional training sites simulating Iraqi and Afghan villages were also constructed in recent years.

Fort Cavazos holds a prominent place in history, with notable figures like Elvis Presley passing through its gates. The army’s continuous investment in the base is evident through the construction of modern amenities, including child development centers, a stadium and the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center.

In terms of economic impact, Fort Cavazos greatly contributes to the Texas economy. As the state’s largest single-location employer, it provides employment for over 6,000 civilians and nearly 11,000 contractors. In 2021, Fort Cavazos’ employment and base-related spending contributed to 160,933 direct and indirect jobs statewide and generated more than $11.2 billion in disposable personal income and more than $28.8 billion in economic activity.

Fort Cavazos’ positive influence is not limited to its military functions. It also serves as a reliable partner and neighbor, as demonstrated during times of crisis. In early 2021, when a severe winter storm hit Texas, soldiers from the 1st Medical Brigade at Fort Cavazos aided the Temple community by assisting with various effects of the storm, such as providing potable water to areas affected by frozen water pipes.

The collaboration between Fort Cavazos and Temple extends beyond crisis response. Soldiers from the base actively volunteer throughout the year, supporting schools, veteran service organizations and other causes. This engagement allows civilians to develop a deeper understanding of the army while soldiers gain insight into Temple’s vibrant culture.

With a strong presence of top-tier health care institutions and a highly skilled workforce, Temple, Texas has emerged as a leading city in the field of healthcare and innovation. Boasting a concentration of healthcare professionals that surpasses 30% of its population, Temple has become a regional hub attracting patients and professionals from near and far.

Baylor Scott & White Health: A Commitment to Excellence

At the forefront of Temple’s health care landscape is Baylor Scott & White Health, the largest not-for-profit health care system in Texas. Rooted in a century-long legacy of healing, Baylor Scott & White is dedicated to improving accessibility, affordability and the overall customer experience for all individuals, families and communities it serves. The flagship hospital, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple, stands as a Level I trauma center, providing personalized, high-quality care while also leading in research and medical education.

Outstanding Achievements and Accolades:

Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple has garnered numerous accolades, highlighting its commitment to excellence in patient care. In 2021, the hospital achieved the esteemed Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, placing it among the top 8% of hospitals nationwide. Additionally, it was recognized as the No. 2 major teaching hospital in the country and ranked on Fortune/IBM Watson Health’s 100 Top Hospitals list. The hospital’s expertise in cancer care, breast care, orthopedics and other specialties has earned it recognition as one of the top 10% of hospitals in the nation.

Specialized Pediatric Care at McLane Children’s Medical Center:

Within the Baylor Scott & White Health system, McLane Children’s Medical Center in Temple stands out as the area’s only Level II pediatric trauma center. Verified by the American College of Surgeons, it provides critical care for infants, children and adolescents. With a Level IV neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and a comprehensive range of services, McLane Children’s has been meeting the unique health care needs of young patients for over a decade. The hospital’s commitment to holistic care is evident in its therapeutic musical playground and dedicated neonatal and pediatric transport team.

Central Texas Veterans Healthcare System:

Temple’s health care landscape extends to the dedicated services offered by the Central Texas Veterans Healthcare System. This comprehensive health care system serves a vast area, providing inpatient, outpatient and residential care to approximately 110,000 registered patients across 39 counties. With a budget of approximately $1 billion and over 4,200 employees, the system offers a wide range of specialized care to veterans, including acute care, mental health care and surgical care.

Temple’s commitment to comprehensive health care is evident in the presence of other notable facilities. Temple EMS, operated by American Medical Response (AMR), offers pre-hospital emergency medical care and ambulance transport to the city and Bell County. Canyon Creek Behavioral Health provides inpatient and outpatient services for mental health care, catering to adolescents, adults and older adults. Cedar Crest Hospital offers acute inpatient and residential treatment for individuals in need of mental health care, including specialized programs for children and adolescents.

Meet Jacob Rodriguez, the passionate owner who believes in turning dreams into reality. Having lived in Temple since the age of 10, Rodriguez always aspired to establish his own business in his hometown. Inspired by his entrepreneurial parents, who taught him the value of hard work and perseverance, he set out on his journey.

In 2017, Rodriguez recognized a growing need for Dapper and Dashin’ in our community. His vision was to create a culture where clients could not only receive exceptional service but also indulge in a complimentary cocktail, groove to music and engage in personal conversations with their stylist.

The numbers speak for themselves, showcasing their success. Currently, D&D serves over 800 clients each month. Their steady clientele, combined with Temple’s growth, has provided them with the opportunity to welcome new stylists and barbers to the area. The D&D team is dedicated to achieving their business goals while experiencing personal and professional growth.

The growth of other businesses in Temple has also been instrumental in D&D’s success. They have been invited to numerous Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting events throughout the city, forming valuable partnerships and engaging in cross-promotions. While multiple locations in the surrounding area are not out of the question, Rodriguez is primarily focused on seeking wisdom and praying for guidance to further grow the D&D brand.

Ultimately, Jacob’s favorite aspect of his business is the sight of his customers—friends, neighbors, and community members—coming together at the salon.

The Cultural Activities Center

The Cultural Activities Center believes in the power of creation. Children’s Museum

The Temple Children’s Museum (TCM) is located at 11 N. 4th in Downtown Temple. Established in 2016, the TCM creates a place for parents and children to discover a love of learning through play and interaction. The Museum is open Monday-Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to noon, through reservation. Two sessions are available each day.
