It is a pleasure to present the Temple Chamber of Commerce 2022-2023 Community Guide and Business Directory. A resource about the Temple, TX area for community members, visitors, and others considering relocating to this dynamic area of Texas.

Located in the heart of Central Texas, Temple offers superior education, exceptional healthcare, abundant recreational opportunities, and numerous shopping, service, and dining options. Our vibrant community is the headquarters of several major employers and the home of hundreds of businesses that understand customer service and business ethics. We are also at the doorstep of Fort Hood, the largest military installation in the free world.

With an abundance of major top-tier health care employers in the area, it’s no wonder Temple has become a leader in health care and innovation. Temple has one of the highest concentrations of health care workers in Texas, with more than 30% of the population trained and working in the industry. Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple (BSWMC — Temple), a Baylor Scott & White flagship hospital has 640 beds. It is the only Level I trauma center between Austin and Dallas, providing personalized, quality care, in addition to its renown standing as a center for research and medical education.

Clinics for Temple-based physicians stretch from Waco to Killeen and Copperas Cove, to Gatesville and Salado. To support all stages of health care, the Baylor Scott & White Continuing Care Hospital treats long-term care patients on ventilators, needing wound care or skilled nursing. A network of dialysis centers stretching from Bell County to north Williamson County is unique in our system. Temple is the hub of Baylor Scott & White Hospice, caring for patients throughout Central Texas.

Among numerous accolades in 2021 were these highlights:

• Baylor Scott & White Temple Market (all departments and locations where registered nurses provide care) achieved Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the largest and most prominent nurses credentialing organization in the world. Fewer than 8% of hospitals and even fewer regions nationwide have earned this elite status.

• BSWMC – Temple was recognized as the No. 2 major teaching hospital in the country, and simultaneously named to Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals list. This was the 11th time BSWMC – Temple was recognized with this honor as one of the top performing major teaching hospitals in the U.S.

• BSWMC – Temple received the 2021 America’s Best Hospitals award in cancer care and breast care from Women’s Choice Award. Our Pavilion site was recognized in orthopedics. These practice areas are among the top 10% of hospitals in the country.

• BSWMC — Temple received two American Heart Association Achievement Awards for implementing quality improvement measures that ensure cardiovascular patients receive efficient and coordinated care, ultimately leading to more lives saved, shorter recovery times, and fewer returns to the hospital: Mission: Lifeline – STEMI Receiving Center – GOLD PLUS and Mission: Lifeline – NSTEMI – GOLD.

• Baylor Scott & White’s Vasicek Cancer Treatment Center (VCTC) was highlighted in the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer’s 100th-anniversary celebration. VCTC is the first cancer program accredited in Texas, and the third-oldest accredited program in the nation.

• The maternity unit at BSWMC — Temple achieved the state’s highest designation.

• BSWMC — Temple was named to Healthgrades’ America’s 250 Best Hospitals list, indicating an overall clinical performance in the nation’s top 5%.

Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center in Temple is the area’s only Level II pediatric trauma center, as verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma, making it the only pediatric trauma center between Dallas and Austin. It also features a Level IV neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

McLane Children’s continues a legacy of serving the community’s unique healthcare needs for infants, children and adolescents, including an emergency department that’s equipped to handle all emergencies — from minor sprains to major trauma. McLane Children’s celebrated 10 years of dedicated service on Oct. 4, 2021.

The hospital also hosts a community mobility-accessible musical playground, located at the front of the medical center. The 9,561-square-foot gated playground offers therapeutic benefits for all patients, with features that can assist in development and healing. Children all over Central Texas in need of specialized care often rely on Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s neonatal and pediatric transport team. Since March 2012, the transport team has answered thousands of calls traveling throughout Texas.

Cedar Crest Hospital & Residential Treatment Center

Cedar Crest Hospital and RTC is a 158-bed inpatient mental health care facility offering acute inpatient services to children, adolescents and adults that are designed to stabilize the patient’s immediate, residential treatment for adolescents who have completed acute care inpatient programs and require additional treatment in a 24-hour therapeutic environment. Outpatient programs offer an intensive level of care for people who are experiencing mental health challenges but who do not need the round-the-clock care of a residential or inpatient program.

Central Texas Veterans Health Care System

Central Texas is a large complex healthcare system serving 39 counties with about 110,000 patients registered for care. With an annual budget of approximately $1 billion, and more than 4,200 employees, Central Texas offers a wide variety of services to include inpatient care in Acute Care, ICU, and Acute Psychiatry; outpatient care in Primary Care, Specialty Care, Surgical Care, and Mental Health Care; and a variety of residential care in Community Living Center, Blind Rehab, and Domiciliary. Temple EMS

Temple EMS provides pre-hospital emergency medical care and ambulance transport to the City of Temple and much of Bell County. Service began in 2017.

Temple EMS is an American Medical Response (AMR) company. AMR combines national expertise in emergency medicine with local providers who are dedicated to serving in the communities where they live.

Chess Vets

Chess has been an integral part of Michael Lenox’s life. It helped him when he was a student to improve his grades. After 20 years of military service, it helped his store and restaurant succeed with planning and foresight. And it continues to substantially help and improve his cognitive abilities as a senior.

So it makes sense that Lenox would use his experience, love of the game, and passion for veteran rehabilitation to create Chess Vets, a nonprofit incorporated in 2016.

“As a rehabilitative tool, chess is invaluable because I cannot think of any other activity that people assume you are smart if you do it, even if you learned the game,” Lenox said. “It’s invaluable for people in any type of rehabilitation to feel better about themselves.”

Lenox is a retired Machinist Mate Chief Petty Officer (Submarines/Diver/Deep Submergence) with the U.S. Navy. He created Chess Vets, a 100% volunteer-run organization of both civilians and veterans, to give others the opportunity to learn, play, and enjoy the game of chess as a means to dramatically improve their lives.

“We originated in Chicago after I was appointed by the Illinois Chess Association, the official state chess organization, as the Military Committee Chair,” Lenox said.

Chess Vets has operated alongside the Veterans Administration (VA) system as facilitators at two VA hospitals, two VA veteran centers, an Illinois VA home, a VA Community Resource and Referral Center, and a VA residential care facility (hospice).

“After realizing veterans rely on family and friends for their wellbeing, we expanded our operations to include the community,” he said. “We set up operations at two Chicago shopping malls, convalescent homes, community centers, and major disability exhibitions. This was all accomplished with primarily three core volunteers. We have earned national awards for our contributions.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chess Vets moved its operations online. The Paralyzed Veterans of America contacted Lenox to help train their members online.

“We still run weekly chess tournaments and a social Zoom chess club meeting, but it is a skeleton of what it was like during the pandemic,” he said. “We moved our headquarters to Texas due to the rise of violent crime in Chicago.”

Having been raised in Arlington, Texas, Lenox was advised to move to Temple for its quality VA.

“I am a 100% service-connected, disabled veteran and require constant medical attention,” he said. “It was the best decision ever, the VA here rocks.”

Chess Vets started a community game club in Temple (called the Family & Friends Game Club) to encourage people to get together and play various strategy games — not just chess.

“We offer numerous opportunities for small and big businesses alike to be involved in their community while they increase their foot traffic for a very small ROI,” he said. “We perfected this marketing strategy while holding our tournament and club meetings in the middle of a major shopping mall in Chicago.”

It worked like this: businesses at the mall supplied Chess Vets with $5+ gift cards to their stores, depending on their own store average merchandise sales, and Chess Vets supplied them as free raffles to their free events.

“They got the customer in their store. If not, it was 100% breakage,” Lenox said. “Easy peasy. It worked great for the mall, and should work here as well. For example, May’s free chess tournament was sponsored by Texas Roadhouse – Temple.”

Chess Vets works closely with the Temple Library to bring family-oriented learning. The organization has future plans to work with the Temple Parks Department.

“We survive on the generosity of donations, not sales or memberships. We haven’t taken one dime for ourselves. Our goal is not to make money, but not lose it either. We are a gold member of Guidestar.org for our transparency.”

Temple Offers Unparalleled Location for Low Costs, Connected Infrastructure, and Skilled Talent

When companies locate or expand in a city, the decision process extends beyond selecting the perfect site. Fort Hood, one of the largest military installations in the country, is less than 30 miles away. Many veterans choose to live and work in Temple after their service. In addition, Temple is an easy commute from Austin, Waco, and the rural counties in central Texas.

Temple Workforce Facts:

• The Temple Metro population grew by 35,159 over the last 5 years and is projected to grow by 36,824 over the next 5 years.

• The Temple Metro has 210,810 resident workers and 17,649 residents who commute to jobs outside of the Temple/Killeen MSA.

• The Temple Metro is home to 110,331 millennials, 16% above the national average for an area of its size (94,907).

• The Temple Metro is racially diverse — 30% more so than the national average for an area of its size.

• Some 300 military personnel separate from Fort Hood each month and are looking for civilian employment. More than 35% of those indicate a preference for remaining in Central Texas.

• Currently, 63,708 veterans reside in the Temple Metro — a population nearly 150% higher than the national average for an area of its size (25,565).

Orchestral Society

Central Texas Orchestral Society is the parent organization of the Wildflower Belle and Junior Cotillion programs that aim to teach students appropriate social and concert etiquette while fostering an appreciation for classical music. The Cultural Activities Center

The Cultural Activities Center believes in the power of creation. With a goal to enrich the lives of all Central Texas residents by inspiring exploration, involvement and enjoyment in the arts, the CAC is a community-funded, not-for-profit arts center that encourages cooperation between other area institutions, supports the arts in education and provides resources to get active.

The Temple Railroad and Heritage Museum is housed in Temple’s historic Santa Fe Depot. The permanent exhibits explore working and traveling on the railroad with an emphasis on the Santa Fe Railway. The Temple Children’s Museum (TCM) is located at 11 N. 4th in Downtown Temple. Established in 2016, the TCM creates a place for parents and children to discover a love of learning through play and interaction.

The Museum is open Monday-Wednesday, 8:30 am – noon, through reservation. Two sessions are available each day: the first from 8:30- 10 a.m., the second from 10:30-noon. Thursdays and Fridays are reserved for private parties, camps and other special events.

The Museum can be reserved for birthday parties, private events and team building activities on weekends.

Ticket prices are $7 per child with the first adult free. Additional adults are $7 each.

We offer a range of tour options to local attractions in Central Texas, like wineries and breweries, as well as a place on 2nd Street in downtown to unwind and take in a show. The skating center offers opportunities to have fun, from public skating sessions, to beginner skating classes, to public or private parties and fundraisers. As a current student at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB), I can genuinely admit that everyone on campus is someone. At UMHB, your spiritual, academic, and social lives grows exponentially during your time on campus. While there are nearly 3,800 total students in the student body, I have never felt lost amongst the crowd with my professors, peers, or the other faculty and staff. Everyone seems to be standing in my corner, rooting for my success.

UMHB offers Chapel at two different times every Wednesday. The speakers, band, and prayer that one encounters inside Walton Chapel are life changing. The spiritual life does not stop in Chapel, though. With clubs, events, and surrounding churches, you are able to get plugged in to serving the Lord. Professors speak of Jesus, pray over your classes, and reach out when they notice you are struggling.

With a student-teacher ratio of 17:1, my professors invest in my education, future, and well-being. The largest class I have been in was a class of 10 students. My professors send words of encouragement when they see me not performing my best, and they send words of praise when they recognize I am doing good work.

There are more than 60 different undergraduate majors, 10 master’s degree programs, and two doctoral programs. Therefore, there is truly something for everyone at UMHB. Student success coordinators, advisors, and the Career Services department will work with you to find where you belong best.

The freshman class of 2021-2022 welcomed 861 new students. They are a part of 1,894 students who live on campus. There are several different styles of dorms to choose from, and many different dorms per style. The campus is not large, so walking from the dorms to anywhere on campus is easy and enjoyable.

Not only do people exercise by walking, but UMHB is also home to athletic facilities, sports, and recreational leagues that are top notch. UMHB has 16 different sports, including our National Championship football team. UMHB also has a disc golf course, walking trails, a gymnasium, basketball courts, a pool, and a brand-new intramural field. Sports are one way to get involved and show school pride for UMHB.

Another way to represent the school is by taking place in one of its many traditions. Our tradition list is long, but there are a few meaningful events that rise to the top of the list for me. Every year when new students finish Welcome Week, they are “dubbed” with a ceremonial sword by the university administration as “Crusaders Forever.” Our school mascot is the Crusader and representing the “Cru” is a massive tradition on campus. We take pride in who we are, and it’s an honor to be a “Crusader for Life.” The dubbing ceremony welcomes new students to their college home in a special way.

Another special university tradition occurs during the fall semester. It’s known as, the Miss Mary Hardin-Baylor (MHB) Pageant. This event gives the women on campus an opportunity to represent their club or organization, showcase their talent, and compete for a chance to be crowned Miss MHB. Likewise, in the spring semester, Cru Knights takes place. This event is essentially the equal of Miss MHB, but for the men on campus. The guy’s event is filled with humor, high energy, and fun!

The spring semester ends with another university and community tradition, the Easter Pageant. The Easter Pageant is a meaningful reenactment of the life of Jesus Christ, including his crucifixion and resurrection, directed and performed by UMHB students.

Overall, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor hones in on students’ well-being while promoting academic and spiritual growth. Opportunities are not sparse here, they are abundant and overflowing, and there is a space for everyone at UMHB.

Introducing the Spirit of Santa Fe Trail

The Temple area is home to a collection of locally-owned wineries and breweries that produce unique wines, craft beers, and spirits under their own labels.

In fact, these Texas Craft Beverages are more than what is in the glass. According to the Texas Wine & Grape Growers Association, the economic impact of the wine and Winegrape industry on the state of Texas is more than $13.1 billion. And according to the Texas Comptroller’s office, craft breweries contributed $700 million to the gross state product in Texas in 2020. The economic impact of the industries provides agriculture preservation, jobs, generates taxes, and attracts tourism.

Due in part to the high-quality wines and craft beer options, the Temple Chamber of Commerce recently introduced the Spirit of Santa Fe Trail, a self-guided craft beer and wine trail. The trail is an opportunity to celebrate the participating craft breweries and wineries in Central Texas.

“Central Texas has a budding winery and brewery industry that offers something for everyone,” noted Rod Henry, Temple Chamber of Commerce President. “Our region produces traditional grape-based wine, mead wine, and fruit-based wines, craft beer, and more. The Spirit of Santa Fe Trail is a craft beverage lover’s dream … It is a weekend adventure exploring some of Texas’ finest craft beverage makers throughout the greater Temple area.”

The 2022 trail participants spanned throughout the greater Temple area, offering a variety of beverages for craft connoisseurs and casual tasters.

Splash, Explore, Golf, and Play in Temple

The Temple area enjoys great weather and numerous outdoor recreational activities that are the ideal escape from the daily grind. From amazing parks and trails, water sports, boating and fishing, to wildlife viewing and picnicking, Temple is an outdoor haven for the entire family.

Water Lovers

The Lions Junction Water Park is a state-of-the art water park that includes a 300-foot lazy river, two 30-foot water slides, a beach-entry pool, and a deep-water pool complete with a diving board and rock-climbing wall. Families from all over Central Texas come to Temple to enjoy this unique attraction.

A quick and free way to cool down is to visit one of the splash pads found throughout Temple. Ferguson Park features an interactive splash pad, where kids enjoy triggering the 11 colorful sprayers. Miller Park and West Temple Park also offer similar splash pads open throughout the summer. In addition, there are four public pools around town operated by the City of Temple.

Belton Lake, just 3 miles outside the Temple city limits, is a 12,385-acre lake on the Leon River. The lake functions as a water supply, fish and wildlife habitat, and provides recreation opportunities for the public. Amenities include boat ramps, lakeside marinas, bank fishing access, boating, fishing, swimming, camping, picnicking, hiking, and wildlife viewing.

Temple Lake Park at Belton Lake offers a designated swimming area, beach, restrooms, picnic tables, boat ramps and a group shelter. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the park has a small entry fee and is open year-round.

Stillhouse Hollow Lake, adjacent to Temple in the Belton/Salado area, offers over 58 miles of shoreline. This 6,430-acre lake area features boating, fishing, swimming, camping, picnicking, scenic trails, birdwatching, two parks, and a lakeside marina.

Get Extreme

Extreme sports enthusiasts can try their hand at rock climbing or mountain biking at Miller Springs Nature Center. Miller Springs Nature Center is a 260-acre scenic natural area situated between the Leon River and 110-foot-high bluffs, immediately east of the Belton Lake Dam. This area also features scenic overlooks, natural winding trails, waterways, and wildlife.

Several other extreme sports are also available in the area including skateboarding at Temple Skate Park, scuba diving at Belton Lake or Stillhouse Hollow Lake, and sky diving with Skydive Temple.

Play a round of golf at Sammons Park Golf Course, a city-run course featuring a clubhouse, golf cart facility, lighted driving range, putting green, and restaurant. Wildflower Country Club is a private 18-hole course and includes tennis courts, a swimming pool, restaurant, and pro shop.

Outdoor Fun

Temple takes great pride in its pristine parks and recreational facilities. With over 25 miles of walking, hiking and biking trails, playgrounds and other fitness opportunities, recreation is easily part of any active lifestyle. Family programming includes youth camps, athletic leagues, a bark park, and disc golf.

The City of Temple recently opened a state-of-the-art recreation complex, Crossroads Park, in west Temple. This is a 260-acre complex that features baseball, softball and soccer fields, tennis courts, a 27-hole disc golf course and other amenities. It is a regional hub for recreational athletics and brings in a variety of sports tournaments.

There are two additional disc golf courses in Temple for those wanting to try something different. Courses at South Temple Community Park and Lions Park are designed for players to enjoy an entertaining and challenging game of this recreational sport.

Temple is home to a nationally recognized walking trail at Lions Park. The Lions Park Trail is a combination of two trail types. The first, made of concrete, meanders through the lower part of the park. Along this trail are wetlands and a beautiful pecan grove. The second trail type is found along the hillside, where walkers can see a cedar grove, fishing pond, pavilions, and a great view of the city.

Lions Park also includes the Rotary Club of Temple South Accessible Playground, designed to serve children of all ages with disabilities, and the Central Texas Bark Park.

A STRONG PARTNERSHIP

Fort Hood is a Close and Trusted

Neighbor to the Temple Community

Thirty miles west of Temple lies Fort Hood, a sprawling U.S. Army post home to thousands of soldiers and their families.

Nicknamed “the Great Place,” Fort Hood developed a long and valued relationship with the City of Temple that benefits residents and Soldiers alike.

Equal in size to New York City and all its five boroughs, the post occupies 335 square miles of Bell and Coryell counties and lies 60 miles north of Austin, and 50 miles south of Waco.

There are currently more than 37,000 active-duty soldiers and airmen assigned to Fort Hood along with more than 75,000 family members who shop, dine at restaurants, spend their recreational time, and send their children to school in Temple and other nearby communities.

In addition, Fort Hood trains around 22,000 Reserve Component Soldiers annually. As far as military installations go, it doesn’t get any larger. In fact, one of every 10 active-duty soldiers in the Army is assigned to Fort Hood.

Add in the retirees and civilians who work on post, it is estimated that Fort Hood provides support for more than 507,000 people.

Those numbers add up to a big economic impact. Over 150,000 people are employed directly or indirectly by Fort Hood, which contributed over $29 billion in economic output in 2019, according to the Texas Comptroller.

The “Great Place” started from humble beginnings.

The post’s history dates back more than 80 years to 1942 and the start of World War II and Camp Hood, where the rolling farmlands of Central Texas were converted into firing ranges for tank destroyers.

Since then, units from Fort Hood have participated in every major conflict, including the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other areas around the world.

Today, Fort Hood is home to multiple battle-tested units, including the First Cavalry Division and the III Armored Corps, known as “America’s Hammer” due to its numerous armored and mechanized units.

Although these units boast impressive equipment, at the heart of these formations are the people: the soldiers of Fort Hood.

“The Army is a people business and taking care of people is a big part of our relationship with Temple,” says Colonel Roger Giraud, Commander of the 1st Medical Brigade, which is Temple’s designated partner unit from Fort Hood.

“Whether it’s linking in with Chamber of Commerce, supporting veteran service organizations, or participating in the Adopt-A-School program, our partnerships in Temple are mutually beneficial and help us stay connected and informed about what’s going on in our communities,” added Giraud.

Maintaining relationships with the local community and a positive environment for soldiers and their families creates the right conditions for the Army to succeed at its mission: fighting and winning the Nation’s wars.

“Training, and being ready to fight America’s next war, is the reason we exist, the reason Fort Hood exists,” explains Giraud.

“There’s no better place than the ‘Great Place’ for a soldier to train and become a master of his or her warfighting trade.” says Giraud. “And being in Central Texas, with its great culture and amenities makes life off-duty enjoyable too.”

Local Treble Maker Educates on

Teaching and Honing Music Skills

For more than seven years, music educators and musicians in Temple, Texas and beyond know Kenya’s Keys Voice and Piano Studio (Kenya’s Keys) (KenyasKeys.com) as the place to be when it comes to growing a love and skill for music.

Takenya Battle, the self-titled chief treble maker at Kenya’s Keys since October 2014, provides personalized piano and vocal instruction to teachers and students regionally and nationwide. A classically trained vocalist, pianist, and music educator for more than 20 years, Battle said her services are designed to help unleash one’s inner superstar and empower private music teachers to find less hustle and more harmony.

“I love seeing the maturation of musicality with a boost in confidence through self-discovery,” Battle said. Through her instruction, “one can expect to learn to amplify that inner voice that yearns for the spotlight.”

Battle’s own passion for education can be seen through her academic background — her CV showcases her Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Florida A&M University and a Master Certificate in Music Production and Technology from Berklee College of Music.

A musician and music educator with a nontraditional career trajectory, some may be surprised to know her past includes a stint in the military. Battle shared that starting in 2008, she was also in the U.S. Army for nine years, working as a medical logistics supply specialist.

“(I am) a veteran who has used weapons to blow holes in armored tanks,” she said. Though it was a memorable experience in her past, Battle’s life today is focused on something less physical, but perhaps just as powerful.

“Clients often say my insights are ‘life changing,’” she said. Battle explained that through teaching her signature program, Key of Easy, along with creating her weekly Instagram live and YouTube posts and blog, she reaches 7,000-plus music educators per week. Her insight can also be found through the various books she has authored, including “Is My Child Ready for Music Lessons? A Guide for Parents” and “Ten Reasons Why Piano Scales are Important: How to Practice Piano With Purpose.”

Revitalizing

and Reinvesting

in Downtown Temple

A thriving downtown economy is a vital aspect to any City. It’s where members of all segments of the community meet for socialization, events, and to shop at unique businesses.

The City of Temple’s pro-growth attitude is reflected in its continual improvements to Downtown Temple. David Patrick, a consulting engineer with KPA Engineers, a professional consulting firm providing engineering, architecture, planning, and environmental services, has worked on the Temple Reinvestment Zone for over 20 years. He said the downtown improvements have been a work in progress for just as long.

“In 2012, the City of Temple and Temple Reinvestment Zone initiated a Downtown Master Plan project, led by KPA Engineers, which was the catalyst to begin an aggressive approach to revitalizing Downtown Temple,” he said. “The most notable projects were the Santa Fe Plaza, Santa Fe Market Trail, and 1st Street which began in 2017 and were completed in 2021. These projects alone were worth $15.1 million dollars. Unfortunately, COVID-19 hit just as these projects were coming to completion, but today Temple’s citizens can enjoy these spaces and prove that the investment was well-timed and money well-spent.”

Patrick is one of three general partners at the firm and creates the “P” in KPA. His experience with the Temple Reinvestment Zone has allowed him to participate in critical planning for the community, including Downtown. He said when the downtown improvement projects first began, 1st Street was mostly empty buildings with no real value to Downtown.

“Today, there are almost no unrenovated buildings and it is arguably the most desired area in Downtown Temple,” he said. “On First Fridays, 1st Street is packed and the place to be. Improvements include enhanced lighting and pedestrian access as well as landscaping to beautify the street corridor.”

First Street is also the model for future Downtown roadway enhancement projects. Santa Fe Plaza could be called the “signature” project so far in the Downtown redevelopment.

“In our area, the amenities of Santa Fe Plaza are unprecedented with the TISD Administration Building, Santa Fe Business Center, and the Santa Fe Depot anchoring the development,” he said. “No other venue in Central

Texas, outside of Austin, can compare to Santa Fe Plaza.”

Subsequent to these projects are the MLK Festival Grounds and Downtown City Center Projects. The MLK Festival Grounds project construction is almost complete and will be a transformative area for the Downtown District.

Two buildings within the Festival Grounds have been renovated to serve the area, with utility poles replaced with underground electricity and communications to provide a clean, crisp landscape. Amenities have been added to make the MLK Festival Grounds the most desired of its kind in Central Texas. According to Patrick, to date, the City of Temple, through the Temple Reinvestment Zone, has invested over $80 million dollars in Downtown since the revitalization began.

The MLK Festival Grounds project has also been a multiple-phase project and is expected to be completed in June 2022.

“The 1st and 4th Street Parking Garages, which will add over 600 parking spaces to the Downtown District, are in construction and expected to be complete in the Fall of 2023,” Patrick added. “The Downtown City Center Project has just begun and will be constructed in multiple phases with a completion date expected at the end of 2023.”

Patrick said Temple residents and visitors alike can expect to see continued street enhancement projects in the future, including a Downtown lighting project, pedestrian access improvements connecting Downtown to the TMED District and a community market, among others.

“The improvements in Downtown Temple have already spurred enormous growth,” Patrick said. “1st Street has become completely revitalized; construction has begun on two parking garages as well as Downtown living projects within City Center. Without the projects developed by the City of Temple and the Temple Reinvestment Zone, private developments would not occur. With the future permanent residences in Downtown City Center, between 2nd and 6th Street, very soon all the underutilized and undeveloped buildings will be a thing of the past as the Downtown residents will need and support dining, entertainment, and all the neighborhood services that are required for a Downtown community.”

Patrick said the Temple City Council, Temple Reinvestment Zone, and the City should be commended for their resolve to “not only revitalize Downtown but produce developments that are unrivaled for comparable communities in Central Texas.”

Experts see steady growth in Temple housing market

A changing economic landscape is updating and shaping forecasts for residential and commercial real estate industry nationwide — including real estate within Temple.

Realtor.com’s 2022 Housing Market Forecast Midyear Update in June of 2022 shared a new prediction for inventory that will grow double-digits over 2021, offering buyers a better-than-expected chance to find a home in the months ahead. Among its projections: sales that will hit the second-highest level in 15 years, trailing only the 2021 pace.

“The supply chain shortages are dragging out the building process, (while) all of these people (are) coming into the area needing a place to live, work and play,” said Damon Gottschalk, president of the Temple-Belton Board of REALTORS. “This puts additional demands on all parts of our local economy. Commercial growth is strong.”

Still, Gottschalk warns against rushing into buying your first home.

“The first step is to get with a well-known mortgage company,” he said. “They will tell you exactly what you need to do to better your position for buying a house — for example, save more cash, pay off certain debt and (repair your) credit.”

As to making a move specific to the Temple region, Gottschalk acknowledged vying for a home is a competitive process. “People are flocking here for a better way of life, with a lower cost of living,” he said. “Research projections show steady growth for the next 10 years.”

Danielle Hale, Chief Economist for Realtor.com, shared that preparation will be key throughout 2022, as at the time of its June 2022 midyear report, it continues to be a seller’s market and asking prices remain high. Her advice?

“For buyers who choose to wait until later in the year, take that time to assess your budget so you’re set up with a strong financial footing whenever you’re ready to move forward,” she said.
