From ribbon cuttings and leadership panels to mentorship programs and public policy updates, we host

We’re also proud of the Tempe Chamber Foundation and its impact through programs like Tempe

The Best of Tempe
Restaurants, Rooftops and Recreation for All
There are incredible restaurants and breweries, rooftops with jaw-dropping views, activities galore
throughout the city including the ever-popular Tempe Town Lake and a number of ongoing community
projects designed to “improve quality of life for all community members.”
Tempe truly has something for all ages and all interests, making it one of the best spots in the
Valley.
Once known as a college town with Arizona State University making its home in the heart of Downtown
Tempe, “that story is now evolving,” said Lori Foster, president and CEO at Downtown Tempe
Authority. “We have more retail, more restaurants, more things to do. There is something for
everyone.”
For evidence of that, look no further than Tempe’s restaurant scene, a foodie’s paradise
“with a wider range of restaurant options than maybe three years ago,” said Michael Martin,
president and CEO at the Tempe Tourism Office. “We have a good variety of restaurants that have
been a long part of the fabric of Tempe like the Chuckbox (open since 1972), which everyone loves. The
newer restaurant concepts are providing more options for restaurant-goers.”
New standouts in the Tempe dining scene include Glenrosa dishing up authentic Sonoran cuisine at Grass
Clippings at Rolling Hills Golf Course, Pretty Decent Concepts’ Drop Dead Gorgeous and Filthy
Animal on Mill Avenue and its new restaurant concept, The Roman, opening soon in the north end of
Downtown Tempe. Devil’s Hideaway’s “street food-inspired dishes” and the Idle
Hands Cocktail Bar located inside are a must-visit, while Blue Sushi Sake Grill, Blanco Cocina + Cantina
Catering, and Flower Child Catering are making a splash at NOVUS Place. Bar Capri and Feta Cowboy have
also quickly become favorite spots, as has Three Thirty Three, an Asian-inspired steakhouse at The
Watermark near Tempe Town Lake.
For a good craft beer or cider, Tempe has you covered. Hundred Mile Brewing Co., Tempe’s Small
Business of the Year in 2024, has quickly become a local favorite with its friendly vibe, fresh
handcrafted beer and delicious bites, while Catalyst Crafted Ales is proud to offer “innovative,
locally sourced brews” along with “a full-service tableside ordering experience.” At
Pedal Haus Brewery, founder Julian Wright – “who brought a passion for craft beer and
cycling to the venture” – and his team have created a “popular destination for beer
lovers.” The bike-themed décor and award-winning brewery has helped Pedal Haus “become a
beloved institution in the Tempe community” since it opened in 2015. There are also locations in
Phoenix, Chandler and Mesa. For those looking for a delicious cider that “will suit anyone’s
palate,” look no further than Phoenix-based Six Byrd Cider, which arrived in Tempe earlier this
year.
For those looking to enjoy a drink while lounging by the pool and soaking in the Valley from a new
perspective, “a majority of Tempe’s eight downtown hotels have rooftop experiences,”
Foster said.
Standouts include Skysill Rooftop Lounge, which is atop the Westin Tempe and the Valley’s highest
open-air rooftop. Lucero Rooftop Lounge and Terrace and Salt + Gila Pool Deck Restaurant are popular
spots at OMNI Tempe Hotel, while Alibi Rooftop Lounge at Canopy by Hilton “offers delectable food,
creative drinks and sweeping views.”
“This rooftop renaissance is a new phenomenon that we never had until maybe the last three or
four years,” Martin said. “You have a broader view of the Valley and by intermingling with
the pool and bar scene, it allows you to activate the space for other events.”
If enjoying the mall, high-energy activities, or being outdoors is how you would like to spend your
day, there are plenty of ways for people of all ages to soak in Tempe.
Some of the most popular entertainment options for visitors to the 1.2-million-square-foot Arizona
Mills Mall are LEGOLAND Discovery Center, SEALIFE Aquarium and IMAX, “the only theater in Arizona
equipped to play 70MM films,” and Bubble Planet.
Two venues located south of Arizona Mills Mall – The Picklr and Electric Pickle – have
grown in popularity as pickleball has taken Tempe by storm. There are eight courts at the Picklr, which
offers individual and family memberships and hosts tournaments. The Electric Pickle has nine outdoor
courts along with virtual golf and soccer, and a two-story bar and restaurant. “It’s more
than pickleball – it’s a lifestyle experience,” Martin said.
At Arizona Bouldering Project – the state’s largest bouldering gym with 14,744-square feet
of climbing walls in the 49,000-square-foot facility – offerings also include “yoga,
fitness, youth programming and vibrant community spaces.”
Nearby at Tempe Town Lake – one of Arizona’s most visited attractions – there is no
shortage of water activities for residents and visitors to enjoy. Adventure-seekers can rent kayaks,
stand-up paddle boards, pedal boats and donut boats for groups up to 10.
The miles of scenic lakeside trails that surround the lake also provide the perfect location for a run,
walk or bike ride. Other popular outdoor activities in town include climbing the “A”
Mountain and enjoying The Cloud at Kiwanis Park, Tempe’s largest splash pad.
Kiwanis Park’s new dog park includes four distinct dog park pods, a hydrant water spray feature,
two shade structures and new shade trees throughout, and other amenities, according to the City of
Tempe. There are plenty of other spots around town to take your furry friend, including Papago Park,
Tempe Town Lake and many of Downtown Tempe’s street-level restaurants. “Just be sure to
bring booties for your pup to protect their paws from the warm brick sidewalks,” Foster said.
Updating the sidewalks is part of an ongoing streetscape project on Mill Avenue. “The sidewalks
and infrastructure, including the electrical and irrigation, hasn’t been touched in over 40
years,” Foster said. “Not only will the bricks be replaced, but there will also be new
landscaping, including replacing Ficus trees with more native trees.”
While that work is not expected to finish until next year, there have been a number of recent upgrades
to improve the street-level experience in Downtown Tempe. One example is the Tempe Tales public art
project, which includes 12 life-sized jackrabbit sculptures located throughout downtown that pedestrians
can search for with the help of online clues.
To help downtown visitors locate real-time parking availability (there are more than 20,000 public
parking spots in a 2-mile radius of Downtown Tempe), Downtown Tempe Authority and the City of Tempe have
recently launched a new website application called Tempe TRiP.
“Downtown Tempe is a really great destination for people to visit, to work and live,”
Foster said. “There is a lot of transition going on now – it will be amazing once the
streetscape is complete. There will be something for everyone.”

HonorHealth
EXPANDING ITS COMMITMENT TO TEMPE’S EVOLVING HEALTHCARE
By Matt Beardmore
HonorHealth is proud to be part of Tempe’s vibrant and evolving community. As this thriving and
diverse city continues to grow, HonorHealth – building on nearly a century of service throughout
the Valley – is committed to meeting the unique healthcare needs of Tempe students, working
professionals, families and older adults with compassion, innovation and excellence.
With roots dating back to 1927 when Desert Mission provided food and medical care for those in need,
HonorHealth – rebranded over a decade ago as a result of the John C. Lincoln Health
Network-Scottsdale Healthcare merger – is driven by its mission to improve the health and
well-being of the communities it serves.
Today, HonorHealth serves communities through nine acute-care hospitals and more than 200 primary,
specialist, and urgent care locations. There are 13 HonorHealth locations in Tempe, including the
HonorHealth Tempe Medical Center, which was St. Luke’s Hospital before it was acquired last year
as part of a purchase of several Steward Health Care facilities.
“For our community, the HonorHealth Tempe Medical Center is more than a hospital —
it’s a strategic investment in critical healthcare infrastructure,” said Michelle Pabis,
HonorHealth vice president, Government and Community Affairs. “It also serves as a central
resource for local physicians and clinics, reinforcing the city’s healthcare network and
supporting a healthier, more resilient Tempe.”
“Our vision for HonorHealth Tempe Medical Center is to create a world-class hospital known for
exceptional care, approachable experts and personalized treatment,” she added. “We’re
already making significant investments in building improvements and advanced medical technology,
including the recent addition of the latest da Vinci robotic surgical system, which enhances precision
and expands surgical capabilities right here in Tempe.”
HonorHealth is also investing in the future of healthcare by serving as the primary clinical affiliate
for Arizona State University’s new School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering.
“This groundbreaking partnership will help shape the future of healthcare by training the next
generation of professionals who blend medicine, engineering, technology and the humanities,” Pabis
said. “Together with ASU, we’re building a healthier future for Tempe and beyond.”
HonorHealth remains “committed to being responsive to community needs and intentional about
responsible growth” to support long-term health and wellness across the Valley.
Collaborating with Tempe leaders, organizations and residents on a Community Health Needs Assessment
will also help HonorHealth improve patient experiences and identify the most effective strategies to
meet the community’s diverse needs.
HonorHealth growing its footprint in Tempe and surrounding communities is always a possibility.
“Our goal is to meet patients where they are, with the right level of care, at the right
time,” Pabis said. “That could mean expanding primary and urgent care options, enhancing
behavioral health resources or investing in innovative technologies that improve the patient
experience.”

Retail Districts
Where COMMERCE, CULTURE and Community Meet in Tempe
By Matt Beardmore
There is no shortage of retail options in Tempe. And these locations, whether you’re talking about the unique storefronts on Mill Avenue, the interactive experiences at Tempe Marketplace or the family-friendly options at Arizona Mills Mall, are more than just places of commerce. They serve as centers of the community.
Referred to by the Arizona Republic as “one of Tempe’s most important economic and cultural
hubs,” historic Mill Avenue is the “central route that connects everything from
Tempe’s bars and live music venues, to City Hall, to Arizona State University.”
Thought to be the city’s first-named road (first called Mill Street), Mill Avenue “has
grown, improved, declined, rebounded and just plain shifted in a never-ending cycle.” Today, Mill
Avenue delivers a vibrant mix of retail, entertainment and dining options. As part of the city’s
Refresh Tempe initiative, the Mill Avenue Streetscape – from University Drive to Rio Salado
Parkway – is undergoing some much-needed work.
“The sidewalks and infrastructure, including the electrical and irrigation, hasn’t been
touched in over 40 years,” said Lori Foster, president and CEO of Downtown Tempe Authority,
“a private, non-profit organization that works in partnership with the City of Tempe to increase
the value of the Mill Avenue District.”
“Not only will the bricks be replaced, but there will also be new landscaping, including
replacing Ficus trees with more native trees,” she says.
Businesses will remain open while this project reaches its conclusion in 2026. The 2025-26 season of
2nd Sundays on Mill is also scheduled to take place as Mill Avenue will be filled with “local
vendors, live music, street performances, interactive art and free family-friendly fun” on
November 9, January 11, February 8 and April 12.
For additional information about Mill Avenue, please go to Downtown Tempe Authority’s website, https://downtowntempe.com.
Visitors to Mill Avenue can also take advantage of Tempe TRiP (https://www.downtowntempe.com/get-around/tempe-trip), a new, easy-to-use tool that can help you find real-time parking garage availability in Downtown Tempe.
At Tempe Marketplace, guests have more than “1.3 million square feet of retail space to
explore.” In addition to offering guests nearly 100 shops and restaurant options, Tempe
Marketplace hosts eight to nine mega-events each year, which each draw between 3,000-5,000 attendees,
along with 120 smaller events, such as concerts and community performances. Community engagement has
been a priority for Vestar Development Company since it opened Tempe Marketplace on Sept. 28, 2007.
“We value the marketing and community engagement side of things,” said Jonathan Yee,
general manager at Vestar Development Co. “These are centers of the community.”
Tempe Marketplace – located at the Loop 101 and 202 crossroads – is also the busiest
shopping center in Arizona, Yee said. In June, Tempe Marketplace registered 6.48 million visits in the
previous 12 months. That number is expected to spike to around 8.6 million with the recent arrival of
Sam’s Club Warehouse.
To learn more about Tempe Marketplace and its upcoming events, please visit https://tempemarketplace.com.
Open since 1997 and owned by Simon Property Group since 2007, the 1.5 million-square-foot Arizona Mills
Mall is “the state’s largest indoor, climate-controlled outlet, value and entertainment
destination.” In addition to the approximately 200 stores and 30 restaurants and beverage options
at Arizona Mills, there are a variety of family-friendly entertainment options, including Bubble Planet
– an immersive experience with different rooms that feature different bubble themed activities
– LEGOLAND Discovery Center, SEA LIFE Aquarium and the largest IMAX theater in Arizona.
“As a family-friendly shopping center, we serve as more than just a retail hub — we are a
community anchor that brings people together across generations,” said Munira Smith, director of
marketing at Arizona Mills. “By providing a safe, welcoming environment with amenities geared
toward children and families, we have become a trusted gathering space where recreation and social
interaction naturally intersect.”
Arizona Mills’ impact also extends beyond shopping through its collaborations with nonprofit
organizations such as Treasures for Teachers, Million Dollar Teacher Project, Suzy Foundation and
Lily’s Pad “that support causes such as education, food security, and youth
development.”
The Arizona Mills property will soon feature new lighting throughout after being freshly painted inside
earlier this year.

Tempe Means Business
By Matt Beardmore
“You know that old axiom that it’s all about location – we’re blessed with
location,” said Mike DiDomenico, the City of Tempe economic development director. “If a
company is interested in coming to our area or state, they’re going to look at Tempe.”
One key reason? Tempe is centrally located in the Valley and just a short, 10-minute commute to Phoenix
Sky Harbor International Airport, which DiDomenico called “an important economic engine for the
region.”
Tempe’s robust mass transit system has also been good for business. In addition to the five
freeways that run through or surround Tempe, residents and visitors alike have access to a wide variety
of transportation options, including bus, light rail, paratransit and a modern streetcar that
“serves one of the highest transit ridership centers in the region. “We have nine light rail
stops and 14 street car stops,” DiDomenico said. “We are operating far and away the most
walkable city in Arizona.”
That walkability extends to Tempe Town Lake, which is Arizona’s second-most popular public
attraction (trailing only the Grand Canyon) with approximately 2.4 million visitors per year. Since it
opened in 1999, this man-made lake that spans more than 2 miles has transformed a dry riverbed into a
recreational and economic hub, generating “nearly $2 billion in economic impact.”
“Fifteen years ago there were no high-rise buildings in Tempe – now we have 30-story
buildings and more being built,” DiDomenico said. “We look like a real urbanized downtown,
and we have all of that because 25 years ago they decided to build a lake.”
There are “more than 40,000 people who work at the many businesses surrounding Town Lake,”
according to the City of Tempe. “We are also the number one net importer of jobs in the Phoenix
Metro Area,” DiDomenico said. “We have more people working here (approximately 210,000) than
we have population (which is around 190,000). That’s made our office space market probably the
healthiest market maybe in the Southwest.
“We have low vacancy to the point where we need to start building Class A office
buildings.”
With return-to-work taking hold for many Tempe companies post-COVID, the city has re-emerged as a
bustling hub of daily activity. Tempe’s international profile has also been enhanced by the
addition of global companies. Notable examples include Denmark-based LEGO, which was scheduled to open a
customer service center in Tempe in August, and Cognite, a software company formerly based in Oslo that
has moved its global headquarters to Tempe.
Tempe has also become a central hub in the global semiconductor push, thanks to a strong mix of
industry presence and educational support. Local technology companies draw from Arizona State
University’s large and respected engineering program, which turns out thousands of graduates each
year with the skills needed for advanced manufacturing and chip design. Additionally, the Maricopa
Community Colleges provide a steady pipeline of trained workers ready to step into technical roles.
“The community college system is probably the number one feeder into our workforce system,”
DiDomenico said. “One of the things that surprised me is that many of our advanced manufacturer
partners say that they don’t need people with four-year degrees – the real hole in the
workforce is often those with a two-year degree or high school grads with specialized training.
“Local colleges can meet with a large employer to determine their workforce needs, and by the
start of the following semester, they can design a program that can train students to meet
companies’ needs,” he said.
