Exemplary Commitment to Care, Culture & Community

t. Joseph Medical Center was founded 150 years ago by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Conditions in 1874 were primitive with no running water and limited supplies. Many of the Sisters lived on the hospital grounds. In spite of the difficult conditions, the Sisters built a foundation of providing compassionate care, working together as a family, and treating the whole patient. Those values continue to be the cornerstone of the organization today as St. Joseph Medical Center has evolved into a full service, metropolitan health care facility.

St. Joseph is a Joint Commission accredited, 276-bed acute care facility providing a wide range of services, including a 24-hour Emergency Department, Joint and Spine Institute, surgical services, and outpatient services. The campus, located at I-435 and State Line, also includes a wide variety of affiliated providers including family medical care and specialized senior care services.

In a world full of health care options ranging from specialty hospitals to multi-location chains, three things stand out that make St. Joseph special.

Patient-centered care starts with knowing patients as people, not just a collection of medical symptoms. As a smaller medical center with many long-tenured staff, relationships are formed with patients that transcend, but also influence medical care. St. Joseph Medical Center is the kind of place where patients feel like “everybody knows your name”.

Patient-centered care is also reflected in a focus on prompt attention and prompt resolution of medical issues. Emergency Departments are often perceived as places where patients wait for hours. The St. Joseph Emergency Department has been ranked in the top 10% nationally for a quality patient experience, which includes prompt intake and prompt resolution of needs.

Finally, patient-centered care is reflected in the quality of care. The Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services has awarded St. Joseph Medical Center a 5-Star rating for three years in a row – a designation given to only 8.2% of hospitals nationwide.

A culture that cares for its patients is built on a culture that cares for its employees. The work culture at St. Joseph Medical Center is one where team members take care of each other, both professionally and personally. Many team members are 2nd and even 3rd generation in their families to work at St. Joseph. As you walk the halls you see team members with smiles on their faces exchanging friendly greetings and offering to help each other. With a licensed nurse as its CEO, the work environment is filled with the caring and compassion that are core parts of the nursing profession.

Part of a high-quality work culture is ensuring the safety of every team member and patient. For three years in a row, the Leapfrog Group, an independent hospital safety review organization, has awarded the Grade-A designation to St. Joseph, demonstrating the core value of commitment to patient safety.

Finally, St. Joseph Medical Center is committed to ensuring an ongoing supply of well-trained medical professionals in the years to come. A partnership with Concorde Career College includes an on-campus teaching and learning center for nurses, medical technicians, and other key medical professions. Many Concorde students are found throughout the medical center with internships and other learning experiences.

St. Joseph Medical Center is deeply involved in the South Kansas City community. Those long-term relationships with community organizations and members help the medical center identify and meet specific community needs.

An example is a focus on specialized services for seniors, recognizing that this is an important and growing segment of our community. The Emergency Department has special rooms for seniors along with geriatric trained nurses who can meet the specific needs of seniors both during and after their visit. The Senior Behavioral Health Center provides personalized care for adults over 55 years of age experiencing acute behavioral symptoms associated with dementia and/or a mental health condition. A state-of-the-art 23 bed unit provides a welcoming, safe, supportive environment where patients receive care based on their individualized needs.

St. Joseph is among an elite group of clinicians treating time-critical diagnosis for stroke patients and has earned the Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for the treatment of stroke patients.

It has been a long road over the past 150 years as St. Joseph has persisted and preserved through world wars, global depressions and recessions, pandemics and epidemics, and technology and culture changes that are hard to imagine. South Kansas City is proud to be the home of this wonderful institution that supports the health and well-being of our community.

Cornerstones of Care

Empowering Families With Skills for Success

here is usually more than one way to solve a problem. The “easy” way is to focus on the symptoms of the problem. The more difficult way is to understand the root cause of the problem and solve that.

Cornerstones of Care, a South Kansas City based nonprofit organization with a staff of over 700, identifies the root causes of trauma in the lives of children, families, and communities and provides resources to help work through that trauma, one child and one family at a time.

The organization now known as Cornerstones of Care grew from three organizations that began in Kansas City as early as 1870. The “Gillis Home for Orphans”, the “Ozanam Home for Boys” and the “Spofford Receiving Home for Children” all began as residential programs with a mission to serve children in need. In 1997, Gillis, Ozanam and Spofford joined forces to form the Gillis-Ozanam-Spofford (G.O.S.) Consortium with the goal of sharing best practices and leveraging capacity to better develop infrastructure. Marillac joined in 1998, and G.O.S. became Cornerstones of Care, which also grew to include Healthy Families. Together, the Cornerstones of Care family of agencies provided a full spectrum of preventive and treatment services for children and families throughout the region for almost 20 years.

In 2017, the founding agencies came together as true building blocks or ‘cornerstones’ of compassionate care for even more children and families. Today, their expertise and historical significance are honored through the Cornerstones of Care name, and their individual names have been preserved in the form of campus locations within the Cornerstones of Care organization. Together they have a shared mission and an even greater vision to strengthen our children, families, and communities.

Today Cornerstones of Care partners with children, young adults and families throughout the Missouri and Kansas regions to improve safety and health through three key service areas, Youth & Family Support, Foster Care & Adoption, and Education & Training. Last year, Cornerstones of Care served over 15,000 children and their families throughout Missouri and Kansas.

When asked what makes Cornerstones of Care unique as a service provider, CEO Merideth Rose answered, “at our core, Cornerstones of Care is a ‘Trauma Responsive’ organization”. The entire organization is committed to understanding, recognizing and responding to the effects of trauma. This philosophy is known as trauma-informed care. Cornerstones of Care is the only organization in the region certified in the Sanctuary Model® of trauma-informed care.

All treatments are designed to provide a safe, therapeutic living and working environment for children, families and staff. They focus not only on the trauma of the individual, but also the capability of the individual to create positive change. Cornerstones of Care staff members work with children and families to develop the skills and knowledge that will empower them to live safe, productive and non-violent lives.

Another important element of the Cornerstones of Care culture is the heavy involvement of community partners. Around 90% of the services provided originate from a partner relationship with schools, community organizations, and other service providers. As an example in South Kansas City, Cornerstones of Care works with both the Center and Grandview School Districts to provide screening and follow-up support services to students and their families. These help young students deal with trauma and mental health issues early in life before they become more significant problems as they grow older. They also help teachers and other staff in the school deal with the secondary trauma that they experience through their work with students.

None of this happens in isolation. As an integral part of the Kansas City community, Cornerstones of Care relies on support from governmental entities such as the Jackson County Community Mental Health Fund, private supporters such as United Way of Kansas City, and many caring individuals. As CEO, Ms. Rose invites each of us to come alongside Cornerstones of Care as a volunteer, a donor, or an ambassador to spread the word about how we can all work together to fulfill the mission of partnering for safe and healthy communities for all our children and families.

New Workforce Development Center Opens

to Support South KC Economy

strong employment market, both for employers and employees, is an essential part of making South Kansas City a great place to live and work. Residents need good paying and empowering jobs while employers need dedicated and creative employees.

When Northpoint Development started building the Blue River Commerce Center at the site of the former Bannister Federal Complex, they recognized the importance of a strong job market. Northpoint made a commitment to the community to include a Workforce Development Center (WDC) as a community resource within the complex. They entered into an agreement with the South KC Chamber of Commerce to help design and operate the WDC.

After several years of planning, and with the support of private funders and a grant from the State of Missouri, we are proud to announce the opening of the South Kansas City Workforce Development Center.

The WDC, located at 1300 E 94th Street, is on a site with a rich history and a key part of the South Kansas City economy. Starting as an aircraft engine manufacturing facility during World War II (with then-Senator Harry Truman presiding at the groundbreaking), the site provided essential services to the Federal Government and high paying jobs for thousands of area residents. The Blue River Commerce Center now houses multiple distribution and manufacturing companies along with the Workforce Development Center.

The focal point for the Workforce Development Center is the Harry S. Truman Training Room. Available for community use by private firms as well as nonprofits and community groups, the room is a highly flexible setting for training activities, planning meetings, and other activities supporting the workforce. The room is equipped with facilities for in-person meetings that can also include remote participation via audio and video capabilities. The room has very flexible seating arrangements that can accommodate meeting sizes from a small conference to classes for up to 80 in-person participants. A small kitchen is available for food preparation and the Chamber can provide a list of area caterers to assist with food.

Multiple display screens, an interactive whiteboard, and professional quality sound equipment allow presenters to work with a wide range of technology tools. Remote participants can be included via Zoom, Teams, or Webex. They can view, hear, and participate in meetings and training sessions through a system of five cameras and state of the art audio equipment provided by Avdoxa Experience Design Group. UMKC Talent Link and Metropolitan Community College will be offering classes to the public using the Training Room facilities.

In addition, a partnership with the Full Employment Council will provide on-site job counseling, resume preparation, and job search services.

strong educational system is a hallmark of a strong community. South Kansas City is fortunate to provide high quality educational opportunities from birth through college.

Good education starts in the home, and our three public school districts (Grandview, Center, and Hickman Mills) support that with the very well-named “Parents As Teachers” program. Parents As Teachers serves families with children from birth through the start of kindergarten. Parent educators make home visits, do screening assessments, and provide group activities to help families give their children the best possible start as life-long learners.

For families wanting pre-school services, there is a wide variety of providers in South Kansas City. All three public school districts offer high quality early education services for children aged 3 and up, including Head Start for lower-income families. There are also many private providers, including three South KC Chamber members, Tomlin Academy, Rising Sun Early Learning Center, and Steeplechase Academy.

One of the very unique educational organizations in South KC is the KC Autism Center. Their mission is to help people on the Autism Spectrum fulfill their potential through ethical, evidence-based treatment, education, and training. They use Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to optimize learning environments for children with autism spectrum disorders.

The foundation of K-12 education in our community is provided by three independent public-school districts, Center, Grandview, and Hickman Mills. All offer outstanding and innovative learning experiences for all members of our community. They also offer students a wide range of extracurricular activities, including sports, arts, and special interest clubs. Of note is a cooperative initiative supported by the Ewing M. Kauffman Foundation called Real World Learning, which gives students opportunities to develop their skills and earn certifications and college credits. Just a few examples include broadcast journalism, computer technology, engineering, healthcare, skilled trades, and many more. All three districts work together as a regional coalition that expands opportunities for students in all three districts.

Private school options include St. Thomas More, Whitefield Academy, Daniel Academy, Rockhurst High School, and Notre Dame De Sion High School.

South KC is home to two outstanding colleges – the Longview Campus of Metropolitan Community Colleges (MCC) and Avila University.

The Longview campus is part of a city-wide educational institution and offers over 120 degree and certification programs to local students. MCC’s in-district tuition is about 1/3 the cost of a typical four-year school, and nearly half of MCC students qualify for scholarships and grants, including Missouri’s A+. Students can pursue their educational dreams without accumulating a mountain of debt.

Avila University is one of the top private universities in the State of Missouri. Providing over 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, along with a four-year guarantee for undergraduate completion, Avila is a pioneer in high quality education at an affordable cost.

From birth through life-long learning, South Kansas City provides a wealth of educational resources for our community!
