Monarch Butterfly Groves

• Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove

One of the largest monarch butterfly colonies in North America, this grove welcomes thousands of butterflies each year, offering a truly magical experience.

• Monarch Dunes Butterfly Grove in Nipomo

Spanning 19 acres, the Monarch Dunes Butterfly Habitat was established in 2006 as a sanctuary for these delicate creatures.

• The Western Monarch Trail

Whale Watching in South County

Whale watching in picturesque Avila Beach is both serene and thrilling. Guided tours are available year-round, with gray whales visible from December to April, and humpback whales often seen throughout the year. Keep an eye out for the diverse seabird population, too!

Can’t-Miss Hikes

Explore over 11 miles of trails that wind through oak woodlands and along coastal ridgelines, offering panoramic ocean views.

• Meadow Creek Trail

This family-friendly boardwalk trail leads from the free parking lot on Grand Avenue to the Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary.

• Dunes Trail

Located near the Oceano Dunes Nature Preserve, this trail is accessible from the Pier Avenue parking lot and offers a peaceful escape into nature.

• Oso Flaco Lake

A hidden gem for wildlife viewing, this trail takes you across the lake and out to the beach and dunes.

• Ontario Ridge

For a more challenging adventure, tackle Ontario Ridge’s steep inclines. Mountain biking is also allowed on the trails.

• Bob Jones Trail

Perfect for families, this paved, shaded trail winds through Avila Beach and offers easy access to the town’s vibrant downtown area.

Explore Lopez Lake & Edna Valley

• Lopez Lake Recreation Area

For freshwater fun, Lopez Lake offers 22 miles of shoreline for boating, fishing, and jet skiing. The Mustang Water Park adds extra excitement with its towering waterslides and toddler-friendly pool.

• Edna Valley & Arroyo Grande Road Bike Loop

Cyclists will love the scenic loops through Edna Valley’s wine country. These routes range from 20 to 30 miles, starting near downtown San Luis Obispo.

Experience Wine Country

The Edna and Arroyo Grande Valleys are a wine lover’s paradise, just four miles from the beach. With over 30 wineries in the region, you can savor Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Albariño, among other varietals, all crafted with care in our cool coastal climate. Avila Beach:

A Coastal Escape

Just a short drive off Highway 101, the scenic road to Avila Beach winds through an oak-studded valley known for its relaxing hot springs, spas, and wellness retreats. Must-See Attractions in Avila Beach

Avila Beach Farmers’ Market Every Friday from 4-8 p.m., April through September, the Avila Beach Farmers’ Market turns the beachfront promenade into a lively hub for fresh produce, local food booths, live entertainment, and family fun.

Bob Jones Trail: Known as the “City to the Sea” trail, this well-paved, scenic bike and walking path is ideal for all ages and skill levels. The trail begins at Ontario Road and winds through to downtown Avila Beach.

Avila Ridge Trail: Hiking enthusiasts will love the Avila Ridge Trail, a moderately strenuous hike offering breathtaking panoramic views. This rugged trail crosses a 700-foot hill above the Shell Beach bluff with stunning ocean vistas.

Point San Luis Lighthouse A hidden gem on the Central Coast, the Point San Luis Lighthouse has been beautifully restored to museum quality. Take a docent-led tour and enjoy a scenic van ride from Wild Cherry Canyon or book a private tour for your group.

Avila Beach Golf Resort This championship 18-hole golf course features a par 71 layout and scenic views. The front nine weaves through oak-filled valleys, while the back nine stretches along a tidal estuary, providing a picturesque and challenging game for all golfers.

Take the boardwalk to the Monarch Butterfly Grove, enjoy miles of beautiful coastline, or plant your favorite chair into the sand. Enjoy a beachside picnic away from the crowds. Create memories and selfies with the perfect sunset and top it off with a campfire and s’mores on the beach.

The West End

Grover Beach’s “West End” is an eclectic mix of restaurants and shopping. Blocks from the ocean, this walkable downtown is a great place to take a break from the sand without having to drive.

With award-winning microbrews, wine-tasting rooms by the beach, farm fresh juice bars, and friendly neighborhood coffee shops, Grover Beach has everything to quench your thirst.

If you’re lucky enough to visit between March and September, Okui’s Strawberry Stand has some of the largest and sweetest strawberries in the state. Okui’s also supports other local farmers by offering farm fresh seasonal produce.

FAMILY FUN

Grover Beach is the perfect place to explore with family and friends. We always recommend the beach, but our parks, playgrounds, and pickleball courts are second to none. 16th Street Park Playground and Mentone Park Pickleball Courts are just a block apart, with plenty of free parking.

For the more adventurous, check our escape rooms, or venture a few minutes out to Lopez Lake, Oso Flacco, or various other nature preserves. There’s so much natural beauty to take in, you won’t need your screen to experience it all.

Cannabis

Grover Beach offers a wide selection of cannabis shops that carry something for anyone with green dreams (or looking to try responsibly).

Need to get some work done while you are traveling? Consider renting co-work space at The Launch Pad in Grover Beach. Pismo Beach Pier Plaza

Colorful, illuminated seven-foot-tall letters spell out Pismo Beach with a marine-inspired playground. Fish or whale watch from the iconic wooden pier.

Whale Surfing Playground

This fun playground is located in the newly updated Pier Plaza. The main objects on the playground are the humpback whale and the surf boards. The humpback whale is already an iconic creature in the area, but the playground and scenario create an even more memorable experience for the kiddos.

The Pier

The renovated historic Pismo Beach Pier hosts vintage Airstream trailers; each offering different experiences to enjoy, including a concessionaire serving appetizers and drinks and a visitor’s center.

Shell Beach Streetscape

Another great attraction is Shell Beach Streetscape. Featuring an 18-block pedestrian-bike path, with updated streetscape waterways and landscaping, the walkable path meanders along shops and cafes in Shell Beach.

Activities

Pismo Beach and nearby Shell Beach offer spectacular rocks, caves, cliffs, beaches, and coves that are perfect for exploring by kayak. Local companies offer tours and rentals. You can also play a round of golf, horseback ride on the beach, explore tidepools, fish off the pier, or surf for the best waves. Kiteboarding is a possibility when the wind is right. Consider renting equipment to try any of these activities during your stay: an electric bike, motorized scooter, surfing, sea kayaking, or standup paddleboarding.

Crowds of spectators are always drawn to witness the changing colors of the sky as they reflect off the water.

Wildlife

Almost everyone knows about the Pismo clams, but focus has recently shifted to the Monarch Butterfly Grove nearby. The popular grove is one of the winged creatures most spectacular migration stops in the country. While you are on the beach, be sure and scan the ocean for whales, otters, and seals.

Shopping

Downtown provides a charming, retro feeling with its bowling alley, quaint stores, bars, diner, surf shops, arcade, and pool hall. Carving out time to shop unique gifts shops will be a must.

Hiking

The Pismo Preserve offers over 900 acres of recreational opportunities. Visitors enjoy over 10 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

Dune Adventures

Oceano Dunes SVRA is an off-road enthusiast’s dream! For just $5 for a day visitors can enjoy exploring Oceano’s vast backyard playground. Discover the dunes in your own 4x4 or Off Highway Vehicle. No OHV of your own? Rent Dune Buggies, ATV’s, & Side by Sides at the nearby Rental Companies. Want to sit back and enjoy the ride? Book your seat in a real Humvee and enjoy their mild to wild tour experience.

Historic Oceano Train Depot

Step back in time at the historic Oceano Train Depot. Built in 1904, this was once the most important building in SLO County. It now houses train memorabilia, artifacts, and collections from around Oceano and South County over the decades. Take a guided tour through the museum, caboose, and grounds. Be sure to ask about the fascinating Dunites while viewing the last remaining Dunite Cabin!

Oceano Dunes District Visitor Center

Learn about Oceano’s beach and dunes, local flora & fauna, marine life, and Chumach heritage and view one of the very first Dune Buggies made to traverse the dunes in the 1950s! Their gift shop features local apparel, books, gifts, and more. Sign up for the Adventures with Nature app as you tour around the Visitor Center and nearby Guiton Trail.

Arroyo Grande

Parks, Hiking, and Biking

Lopez Lake isn’t the only place in Arroyo Grande to enjoy nature! This lovely town has numerous nearby trails just waiting to be explored. As its name suggests, the Big Falls/Little Falls trail offers gorgeous views of waterfalls. Up for something a little more relaxing? Farms and Farmers’ Markets

Take the whole family to pick your own fruit at Halcyon Farms — or shop for fresh strawberries, veggies, flowers, and specialty foods at Arroyo Grande’s farmers’ markets. The farmers’ market in the Village of Arroyo Grande draws a crowd from 12:00 to 2:30 p.m. every Saturday. Dana-Powers House

Built in 1882, this historic home is part of the original 37,888-acre Rancho Nipomo. Now a private residence, it has housed six generations of the Dana family and stands as a testament to the area’s rich history. You can visit the site at 535 Mehlschau Road.

Kaleidoscope Inn

This beautiful redwood home was constructed in 1887 by retired rancher Vitalis Runels. Today, it operates as a historic bed and breakfast, offering a charming stay and wedding venue. Dana Adobe and Cultural Center

Step back in time at the Dana Adobe at Rancho Nipomo, a historic park offering a glimpse into early California life. Originally a Chumash land and later part of a Mexican Land Grant given to Captain William Dana in 1837, this 48,800-acre ranch once served as a central hub for regional trade and agriculture. Built in 1839, the Dana Adobe now hosts guided tours, giving visitors insight into the daily life of early California settlers. Luffa Farm
