Letter from the Board President

Hello members and friends of our business community!

It is my pleasure to present to you the 2024-2025 Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s community guide and membership directory.

A little bit about me … I have lived in Solano County for more than 30 years - arriving here with my family from Mexico at age six. Having spent most of my life in this county, I am happy to share I have experienced here some of the greatest, life-changing joys, including everything from meeting my wife at age 16 and gaining three wonderful children, to starting work in construction and eventually becoming CEO of my own business - Bay Hauling, a junk removal business. I was thrilled and grateful to be able to further secure roots in this region by purchasing a first home in Vallejo and a second a few years later.

Contributing to my success has been my involvement with the Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Beyond finding value in the Chamber’s business-building resources and workshops, I appreciate the opportunities Chamber involvement has given me to support other local businesses and contribute to economic growth in our region. When the opportunity presented itself, I was eager to step into the role as Chamber president after serving as a member of the Chamber’s board last year.

Chamber advocacy and support of businesses can be seen within this very publication - in this issue, we highlight local grassroots companies representing what the chamber stands for - prosperous hispanic-owned companies in Solano County that are active within the community, and as members of the Chamber.

These businesses are deserving of our recognition and gratitude, as is our passionate (volunteer) leadership team and sponsors. If you haven’t done so already, I encourage you to take a moment to explore the many benefits of new/renewed membership and sponsorship.

Did You Know?

Top 10 ways the Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SHCC) can strengthen your business

Take part in themed mixers, form relationships with other business professionals in the County, and increase your circle of influence in various industries. Mixers are a great way to promote your business, generate leads, nourish relationships and gain visibility in the community. Mixers are typically held once a month. The Chamber also hosts industry-based round table discussions on a regular basis.

Partner with local organizations and SHCC partners for educational presentations, attend no-cost business consulting, and receive informational resources pertinent to your industry. Learn about necessary certifications for businesses or receive help understanding governmental contracts. Other professional development opportunities include English language skills resources, public speaking-building skills, business training for veterans, and streamlined pathways for scholarships.

Aside from the Chamber’s monthly mixers, the Chamber provides opportunities for its members to increase their online presence with social media marketing assistance including crafted social media posts, featured spots on Chamber email blasts and newsletters, job postings on the Chamber website and online directory listings.

Your credibility as a business increases the second you join the SHCC. Local business leaders and community members recognize the SHCC as a credible source for referrals. Businesses may add further credibility by advertising themselves as Chamber members on their storefronts or websites.

Chamber members receive exclusive discounts and the opportunity to negotiate services with other members. Members can also post their discounts to the Chamber’s website, increasing their visibility and traffic.

The SHCC can advocate for you and your business on a county-wide level, assisting with business licensing questions and concerns as well as on a state and federal level by staying aware of upcoming legislation that will affect your business. The Chamber sits down with elected officials to ensure your voice is being heard on a local, state and federal level.

As you become more involved within the Chamber, attending mixers and round-table discussions, your visibility will increase. You will become the point of contact for many in the community regarding your industry. You may even choose to become more involved by joining a committee or the board of directors.

The SHCC offers plenty of opportunities to develop lasting partnerships and friendships within the organization by getting involved on committees, assisting with fundraising and scholarship events, and even creating your own committee to fill a need.

The Chamber receives thousands of contacts per year asking where they should go for products and services. Being a Chamber member allows the Chamber to promote your business and increase its customer base. Business referrals given to walk-in, phone, website or email requests are exclusive to Chamber members.

Aside from educational and informational resources, the Chamber works with partner organizations including the Solano Economic Development Corporation, the Solano Employment Connection, the Solano-Napa SBDC and Solano Community College to provide assistance and timely help for a variety of needs.

Vallejos is the owner of Bay Hauling LLC and a resident of Solano County. Bay Hauling is a certified Minority owned business and services the entire Bay Area. Vallejos is proudly serving on the board for SHCC and is eager to help others grow their business while he continues to grow his own.

Leo Callejas

Vice President, Benicia-Vallejo

DigitalTrack Digital Marketing

Leo Callejas was born in Nicaragua and migrated to the United States in 2001. He joined the Army as an infantryman shortly after arriving and did a year-long deployment to Iraq. After coming back, he separated from the military and decided to go to school and join the corporate world.

Callejas holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Network Management and has over 10 years of experience managing technical implementations and projects for financial institutions.

In 2017, he decided to start his own business, DigitalTrack Digital Marketing, a Solano based digital marketing agency. The agency helps locally owned restaurants increase their online presence and attract more customers.

After starting his business, Callejas joined the Solano Hispanic Chamber because he saw the potential it had to help him expand his professional network. Leo joined the SHCC board in 2017 and has served multiple roles including president of the board.

Additionally, Callejas currently serves as Chair for the Northern Region of the California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (CHCC).

Francisco Marin is a life insurance agent at New York Life, where he offers a variety of products to help clients meet a number of insurance and financial needs, including college funding, retirement, and lifetime income strategies.

Jerry Gonzales

PayCompass

Gonzales is a Business Advocate for PayCompass, he services Solano, Napa, & Contra Costa Counties with Business Services. PayCompass focuses on community growth by supporting SMB Markets.

Their services are: Payroll, Business Lending, POS solutions, Credit card process, Inventory Management, Gateways, Online sales, and Marketing.

As a board member for Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, his goal is to advocate for local businesses and local communities to support growth and education. Providing assistance for basic business questions or concerns is one way he supports and contributes. Gonzales shares volunteering to raise funds, awareness, and support to issues that affect his local community is his purpose and his reward is the relationships he builds.

Marbeya Ellis

Family Resources Manager with Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District

Ellis joined the Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce because she believes that investing in her community will contribute to the growth and development of local businesses and future generations. Ellis is passionate about bridging the gaps between individuals and resources in order to reach their optimum potential.

She shares she decided to join the Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Board because it is responsible for leading this work. In particular, she is interested in building relationships and leveraging resources with the Latino community; with whom she shares similar life experiences. She says it is an honor to serve and help lead this work amongst dedicated and passionate leaders in our community.

Alarion grew up in El Paso where he watched how hard his grandparents worked to make a home. He says he is inspired by their work ethic, and passionate about community impact and outreach. He has watched the Hispanic Chamber focus on the growth of the hardworking men and women who make up his community. He shares he looks forward to being a member of the board to continue the tradition of listening to local small businesses and providing them with valuable networking and services to grow.

Kim Castaneda

Castaneda says she is honored to be a part of the Hispanic Chamber Board. As a past business owner herself, she says she knows how important it was to have the support of her local business community. She chose the Hispanic Chamber because she wanted to support the community and advocate for local businesses. Her philosophy: When small and local businesses thrive, so does the community.

Tina Fowler

Tina Fowler was born and raised in Solano County and has lived here continuously ever since. She has been involved in numerous projects, sat on the board of Vallejo Police Activities League, the CF Foundation, Leadership Vallejo, and the Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum. She co-owned a small locksmith company for many years and she has worked for the Benicia and Vallejo Chambers. She currently assists business owners as a small business consultant.

Yajario Rubio Machado

Yajaira V. Rubio Machado is the founder and dance instructor of Moon Azteca Dance and Art School and the owner of Lunita’s Kitchen, a home-based business specializing in gourmet food, pastries, and gift baskets for all occasions, professionally established in 2020. Lunita’s Kitchen is certified by the Solano County Health Department, licensed by the city of Vallejo, certified by the food handling department, and holds a seller’s permit from the State of California.

Machado is passionate about her community support and donates whenever possible. Lunita’s Kitchen was founded to support Moon Azteca Dance and Art School, donating 25% of its profits to sustain the program. Lunita’s Kitchen is an active small business that contributes to numerous community events, always donating with love when requested.

Machado became a chamber member to increase her business’s visibility and connect with other businesses. She joined the chamber to provide resources and support to small and Latino businesses, helping them grow, gain confidence, and recognize the value of promoting their ventures.

Sandra Jacobson

Sandra Jacobson grew up in Bogotá, Colombia. She has served on the Chamber board since 2017. Jacobson is involved with the chamber because she believes it is important to have a platform to help businesses thrive. She has also served on the board of the Fairfield Community Services Foundation since 2018. She has been the chair of the Foundation Coat and Toy Drive event since 2019, as she shares this event always makes her feel so happy and she finds it amazing to see how people come together to help each other. She is also a proud member of Soroptimist of Central Solano since 2014.

Pedro Arroyo

Service is Pedro Arroyo’s calling, and helping others is his “Why”. Arroyo is currently serving as a police sergeant in the robbery/homicide division. He feels the Hispanic community is underrepresented in law enforcement. Arroyo is using his platform to build bridges between law enforcement and the Hispanic community. He jumped at the opportunity to further serve his community by joining the Solano Hispanic Chambers of Commerce. He shares his law enforcement knowledge with the community. He takes all the information he gathers and brings it back to the department to make positive changes within.

Kim Kersten

Kersten has lived in Fairfield for 32 years and has 2 grandchildren. He grew up in the Bay Area and can be found swimming laps early in the morning. He is currently a member of the Yolo County Farm Bureau and the East Bay BBB.

Kersten has an extensive background in supply chain contracting and has previously served on several Boards of Directors. Kersten is a passionate online marketer/copywriter and is excited with the emergence of AI as it relates to content development. He helps local businesses with tax credits (ERTC and SETC), a wellness app that empowers the employee and family to manage their own healthcare, social media marketing and the use of promotional videos.

Ravi Shankar

Ravi Shankar is a 21-year resident and taxpayer in the Vallejo community, and he is known as a Community Servant leader, passionate volunteer in Vallejo and Solano County, and a board member. He actively participates in events and business mixers of the Chambers of Commerce in Solano County’s five nonprofits, serving as the designated ambassador of the Library Foundation, Naval Museum, and Sister Cities. Shankar is honored and humbled to have recently joined the Board of the Solano Hispanic Chamber. His local mantra, “Volunteer In & For Vallejo,” extends to the other six cities, businesses, and communities of Solano County. He shares he is deeply inspired by the sign at the County Offices in Fairfield that reads, “We Are the Government, You and I,” which is a motivation to serve the community by sharing resources, opportunities, and diversities, which the SHCC exemplifies.

Shankar looks forward to continuing his efforts for a better Solano Hispanic Chamber with the help and teamwork of the community.

Ethel Gourian

Admin

Ethel was born in Argentina and moved to the United States with her family at the age of one. She grew up in Southern California, primarily in Los Angeles County, and earned a degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Business Law from Cal State Northridge.

She joined the chamber to connect with the community she feels closest to. She is bilingual in English and Spanish and wants to see the Hispanic community grow. She aims to be a catalyst for that growth

As the chamber's admin, Ethel enjoys helping the organization thrive and witnessing its positive impact on the Hispanic community and Solano County.

Jose Roa

Intern

Jose Roa is originally from Bakersfield, California, and graduated from UC Davis with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Chicano Studies, along with a minor in Sociology. Through the Asian Pacific Islander Public Affairs (APAPA) internship program, he had the opportunity to intern for the Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Roa chose to join the Chamber because, as a Hispanic, he is committed to empowering local Hispanic-owned businesses by providing them with resources to foster economic growth and success in Solano County.

Mission, Vision, Values

The Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SHCC) was founded in 1989 by a group of Hispanic business leaders in Solano County, California.

Originally given the title Mexican Chamber of Commerce, the organization changed its name to Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as a result of a need to reflect the diversity of Hispanic and Latino cultures within the founding group.

The four founders were Manuel Cosme, Carlos Gutierrez, Maria Guzman Kennedy and Carlos Treviño. After the name change, more founders joined SHCC: Susy Sturgeon, Carlos Solorzano, Coco Corona, W.T. Jeanpierre

The chamber’s mission is to empower Hispanic businesses in Solano County by fostering a supportive community that values inclusivity and diversity. Through leadership development, advocacy, and ethical practices, we unite to create opportunities for growth and prosperity.

Our Vision is to be the leading organization for Hispanic businesses in Solano County by creating a pathway in our communities where businesses can succeed and prosper.

The SHCC is a nonprofit organization that is governed by a board of directors. The chamber offers a variety of programs and services to its members, including networking events, business training, and marketing assistance. The SHCC also advocates on behalf of Hispanic businesses in the county, working to ensure that they have access to the resources and opportunities they need to succeed. The SHCC has grown significantly since its founding. Today, the chamber has over 100 members and is one of the leading Hispanic chambers of commerce in California. The SHCC is committed to helping Hispanic businesses in Solano County grow and prosper, and it plays an important role in the economic development of the county.

Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Brings Digital Transformation to Small Businesses with Verizon Small Business Digital Ready

The Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SHCC) is partnering with Verizon, Next Street, and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) to introduce Verizon Small Business Digital Ready, an online curriculum aimed at empowering women- and minority-owned businesses in under-resourced communities.

This initiative offers personalized learning plans, expert coaching, and networking opportunities tailored to the needs of small businesses, helping them thrive in today’s digital economy. With over 100,000 small businesses having closed due to the pandemic, this program provides critical support to Black and Latino-owned small businesses disproportionately affected.

“We are thrilled to partner with Verizon to provide small businesses in Solano County with the digital tools and resources they need to thrive in today’s economy. This initiative will empower our local businesses to not only survive but to grow and succeed in a rapidly changing digital landscape,” said Juan Vallejos, President of SHCC.

    ■  A crowd of nearly 200 were in attendance as the Solano Community College Auto tech Center moved to a new location in Vallejo.

•  Sep 2023 Hispanic Heritage Celebration

  ○  The Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Dixon Chamber of Commerce and City of Dixon presented “Concerts in the Plaza.”
This was the first time celebrating hispanic heritage in Dixon with local artists, musicians, food trucks, vendors and most importantly community.

•  October 2023 - Valley Strong Mixer

  ○  This event welcomed the Valley Credit Union team to their new location in Fairfield. A grand opening celebration.

•  Oct 2023- Maria’s Taco & Bar Ribbon Cutting

•  Feb 2024- Joint Mixer with Dixon Chamber of Commerce and SHCC at Pedros Cocina in Dixon

  ○  This event was to unite businesses, community partners, and individuals to promote inclusivity and unity within Solano County. •  May 2024- Cinco De Mayo Celebration with Travis Credit Union

  ○  The Cinco de Mayo celebration continued at the Travis Credit Union. It was a festival with the special performance of Ballet Folklorico Nekzayolin from Vallejo.

Community and Convenience: The Daily Desk’s Full-Service Coworking Model

Shawn West had a vision for redefining the concept of coworking spaces. What, he wondered, would demand for remote work desks and offices be like if they came with full service?

The Daily Desk, West’s business of five years at 490 Chadbourne Road in Fairfield, has proved that the idea is a popular one. In fact, they haven’t had a suite available in three years and even the desks are at capacity right now.

“We offer private office suites, open area desks and meeting rooms,” West said. “Then we have a kitchen cafe, mini gym, massage chair, printing, copying, a podcast studio and much more, and that’s all included in a membership.”

Those amenities are one of the key components that make The Daily Desk different from other coworking or remote work spaces.

“We include everything,” West said. “So if you have a business and come to us and say, ‘hey, I need some office space,’ you get a code to the suite, and all you have to do is bring your computer. Everything is furnished. You can print as much as you want. There’s an awesome kitchen cafe with coffees, waters, and everything else included in your membership 24-7.”

Beyond the logistical advantages that The Daily Desk provides, West said clients love the opportunity to work among people in completely unrelated businesses.

“Now, instead of working by yourself or with your dog, you have that sense of community,” West said. “It’s a great place to collaborate and network. That’s a really big added benefit.”

The membership spans a huge range of people working in a variety of industries. The Daily Desk space includes 35 suites, 37 dedicated desks, seven meeting rooms and flex desk seating capacity for up to 100. Membership options range from $279 per month for a limited flex desk to $15,000 per month for the largest suite.

“We have everything from a software company that’s nearly a billion dollar business to mortgage brokers, real estate agents, attorneys, artists, photographers, a staffing company, people that work for large international corporations, the American Red Cross, a radio station broadcasting from here. It’s very, very diverse.”

West runs The Daily Desk along with his daughter, Operations Director Emma West. They both have offices in the coworking space, allowing them the opportunity to stay current with the culture and to continue to evolve their approach to even better service.

“We’re a hospitality business,” he said. “Think of us as a cross between a hotel and a coffee shop with office space. Whatever they need, we’re here to help our members so that they can focus on their business.”

At Your Service

Sal Rodriguez did not leave his previous employer because he was unhappy – he’s always been an entrepreneur, wanting to run his own business. Twelve years later, Rodriguez could not be more pleased with his decision to build his own company, although he knows as the owner of Solano-based Construction Concierge, Inc. there is always room to grow and improve.

A native of Fairfield, Rodriguez spent 11 years as a licensed union electrician at a company that he said treated him very well. “They were a good company – there was no need for me to move on, but I just wanted to try to start a business and see if it could succeed,” he said. “If it didn’t work out, I could just go back.”

That will not be necessary as Construction Concierge has grown into a successful residential and commercial company focused on quality work and customer service. What started as Rodriguez and a helper in 2012 has grown into a company of 17 experts in various trades.

“We were performing electrical work for clients and then … we blossomed, as our clients asked us to do different types of work,” Rodriguez said. “I didn’t want to become a handyman, so I started to bring in the professionals from different trades who could come in and do the job right.”

Construction Concierge’s customer base is approximately 60% residential and 40% commercial, so it has the flexibility to help all types of customers. “From homes to office buildings to restaurants, you name it – we know there’s a way to get the job done,” Rodriguez said.

Part of what helps Rodriguez and his team get the job done is always being available for customers. “We like to grow our relationships with our clients,” said Rodriguez, who added that 80% of his business is from existing clients. “A majority of my clients have my personal cell. They can call me for any question they have.”

For any questions his employees may have for him about a job, Rodriguez can often be found on site working alongside them. “I still go out in the field – I was just down in Berkeley helping the team do a main electrical panel replacement,” he said. “I may not be a painter, but I can be the laborer. I know the basics and can be a good apprentice.”

Construction Concierge’s service area is mostly Northern California, but Rodriguez said they will extend that depending on client needs. In fact, his team once completed bathroom remodels for an existing client in Lake Tahoe.

With the launching of the new service, a growing number of clients have signed up for Construction Concierge’s Preventative Maintenance Program (PMP), which is an annual membership that provides subscribers with routine assessments of their property, discounted rates, prioritized scheduling and referral credit.

“This program creates a partnership between us and the client, and it helps clients proactively maintain their home and get ahead of major problems and increasing costs,” Rodriguez said.

Along with training staff members to sell PMP, Rodriguez stresses to all of his employees the benefits of continual training. “We want them to better themselves,” he said. “This is going to help the company and it’s going to help us provide the ‘Concierge Experience’ service our clients have grown to expect with Construction Concierge.”

Sharing the Unique Cultural Music and Traditional Dances of Mexico

Born and raised in Mexico, Yajaira Rubio Machado (Maestra Yajaira) has “a passion to share the unique cultural music and traditional dances of Mexico.” She feels fortunate to be able to do that through Vallejo, California-based Moon Azteca Dance and Art School, a nonprofit she founded in 2015 to “culturally and ethnically enrich the community by promoting and popularizing the cultural arts, pre-Hispanic and folk dance, traditions, culture, and history of Mexico.”

Maestra Yajaira’s grandfather was a well-known composer of Banda music in Mocorito, Sinaloa, Mexico, and Maestra Yajaira – who moved from Mexico to the United States/California in 1997 – has been dancing the traditional forms of Mexican ballet since she was 4 years old.

Today at Moon Azteca Dance and Art School, there are 18 students ranging from 4 years old through adult who participate in the organization’s programs (all can be offered in Spanish and English), which include folkloric dance classes, arts and crafts workshops, parent-inclusive dance activities, and community performances – such as the City of Vallejo’s Mad Hatter’s July 4 Waterfront Celebration, the Vallejo Día de los Muertos Festival, Vallejo’s 5 de Mayo Festival, and the Vallejo Art Walk.

“Participants benefit from our programs by developing cultural awareness, artistic skills, self-confidence, and a sense of community through dance and arts education,” Maestra Yajaira said.

Maestra Yajaira, a Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce board member and a member of the organization since 2018, said she greatly appreciates the support of the chamber for helping to build community awareness of Moon Azteca Dance and Art School’s efforts.

“The chamber has been supportive of our organization’s efforts in promoting cultural diversity and community engagement,” she said.

In terms of program accessibility, Moon Azteca Dance and Art School offers scholarships through its “Dance and Create with Manos y Pies’” program to provide learning and artistic development opportunities to children and youth from low-income backgrounds. Said Maestra Yajaira: “Scholarships are provided whenever possible, with specific amounts varying based on financial need and available funds.”

To date, approximately 15 scholarships have been provided to participants through the Dance and Create with Manos y Pies’ program.

Lighting the Way: Miguel Amezquita’s Journey With Skylight Electrical Service

As Miguel Amezquita celebrates three years in business with his Skylight Electrical Service, he looks back on an entire life of striving to reach this point.

“From a child, I just wanted to be an electrician,” Amezquita said. “I’ve just loved the trade.”

And so, as a young man in his native Mexico, he started as an electrician. But after moving to the United States, Amezquita said it was more difficult for him to find work that allowed him to focus on just one trade.

“So, I went back to school, got the electrical certification, worked for an electrical company and then started my own business,” he said. “The whole experience has taken about 15 years. It has been worth it. I feel so happy helping my customers, and I’ve always wanted to have my own company.”

Skylight Electrical’s service area includes a 25-mile radius around Fairfield. Among their many services, Skylight handles electrical panel upgrades for residential and commercial, troubleshooting of any electrical problems, overheated breakers and panels, generator installation, lighting for residential and commercial, replacing and installing whole house fans, running circuits for hot tubs and saunas, whole house rewiring, outlet replacement and many other things.

Their vans are fully stocked with parts, Amezquita said, saving the customer time and money.

“It makes it easy for us to provide an affordable price for the customer,” he said. “We don’t have to increase the price because you have to go to the store. When you have the parts with you, it’s easy to just replace it.”

Amezquita said realizing his dream of working as an electrician for his own company is most special to him when he sees the impact he can make.

“My favorite part is having satisfied customers,” Amezquita said. “Sometimes they call us at 2 or 3 in the morning. It’s something that’s not for the money, it’s something that I like to do. For me, I would prefer helping customers. It doesn’t really bother me, whether it’s 2 in the morning or 10 p.m., we’re always available to help them.”

That kind of service, it seems, is being rewarded with repeat and new customers.

“Business is going great,” Amezquita said. “It’s not easy building a business, but it’s been growing, and I’m thankful for all the people who give us opportunities to provide them service.”
