Letter from the Board President

Hola! Greetings!

To my fellow Solano County residents. Lisa here, it’s my pleasure to chat with you a bit. First, a little about myself. I’m a lifetime resident of Solano County, Dixon resident for over 45 years, a descendant of Mexico immigrants who were looking for work and better life opportunities. If it wasn’t for their bravery to leave their homeland and migrate to another county, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

I have worked for local government for over 25 years, more than 20 of those years serving the City of Fairfield as the Permit Center Supervisor and a local business owner offering affordable legal assistance for those who can’t afford an attorney and want to self-represent.

In both my roles, I recognized the lack of bilingual professional services. Realizing that 29.3% of Fairfield and 27.5% of Solano County residents are of a Hispanic background and growing. This is my “why” of leading such an important Chamber.

The Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SHCC) exists to strengthen Solano County’s Hispanic businesses by advocating for opportunities that support their economic growth and by providing resources, training, and tools, which advance development, prosperity and success in Solano County.

By bridging that gap for the Hispanic community and government agencies and providing proper training for successful business practices and leadership, we all win as a community.

The Chamber offers a lot of opportunities for local businesses and minority owned businesses specializing in supporting Spanish speaking owners. Our objective is to grow a diverse membership, taking in business owners of all backgrounds regardless of race, cultures, or size, as long as they are located in Solano County.

I know there’s a stigma that you need to be of Hispanic background and Spanish speaking to join our Chamber. What’s funny, I had the same thoughts before joining and being a fourth generation of Mexican citizens, Spanish is not my primary language, therefore, I didn’t belong. I have found that not to be true. SHCC’s primary objective is to provide training, educational classes, and professional services in Spanish, we also offer the same services in English. We want to strengthen the Hispanic owned businesses, those who do business with the Hispanic community and local businesses who can benefit from our services.

The top 10 ways that we can help strengthen your business when you join our membership are Networking, Professional Development, Marketing, Credibility, Discounts, Advocacy, Increased Visibility, Community, Referrals and Resources (more on pages 6-8).

SHCC plays a very significant role within our County, and we couldn’t do it without our Sponsors, partnerships and most importantly our members. I serve alongside dedicated board members who serve voluntarily, all who have a passion to make a difference in our community.

Did You Know?

Top 10 ways the Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SHCC) can strengthen your business

Take part in themed mixers, form relationships with other business professionals in the County, and increase your circle of influence in various industries. Mixers are a great way to promote your business, generate leads, nourish relationships and gain visibility in the community. Mixers are typically held once a month. The Chamber also hosts industry-based round table discussions on a regular basis.

Partner with local organizations and SHCC partners for educational presentations, attend no-cost business consulting, and receive informational resources pertinent to your industry. Learn about necessary certifications for businesses or receive help understanding governmental contracts. Other professional development opportunities include English language skills resources, public speaking-building skills, business training for veterans, and streamlined pathways for scholarships.

Aside from the Chamber’s monthly mixers, the Chamber provides opportunities for its members to increase their online presence with social media marketing assistance including crafted social media posts, featured spots on Chamber email blasts and newsletters, job postings on the Chamber website and online directory listings.

Your credibility as a business increases the second you join the SHCC. Local business leaders and community members recognize the SHCC as a credible source for referrals. Businesses may add further credibility by advertising themselves as Chamber members on their storefronts or websites.

Chamber members receive exclusive discounts and the opportunity to negotiate services with other members. Members can also post their discounts to the Chamber’s website, increasing their visibility and traffic.

The SHCC can advocate for you and your business on a county-wide level, assisting with business licensing questions and concerns as well as on a state and federal level by staying aware of upcoming legislation that will affect your business. The Chamber sits down with elected officials to ensure your voice is being heard on a local, state and federal level.

As you become more involved within the Chamber, attending mixers and round-table discussions, your visibility will increase. You will become the point of contact for many in the community regarding your industry. You may even choose to become more involved by joining a committee or the board of directors.

The SHCC offers plenty of opportunities to develop lasting partnerships and friendships within the organization by getting involved on committees, assisting with fundraising and scholarship events, and even creating your own committee to fill a need.

The Chamber receives thousands of contacts per year asking where they should go for products and services. Being a Chamber member allows the Chamber to promote your business and increase its customer base. Business referrals given to walk-in, phone, website or email requests are exclusive to Chamber members.

Aside from educational and informational resources, the Chamber works with partner organizations including the Solano Economic Development Corporation, the Solano Employment Connection, the Solano-Napa SBDC and Solano Community College to provide assistance and timely help for a variety of needs.

Lisa is a lifetime resident of Dixon, CA, a descendant of Mexico immigrants. She has worked for local government for over 25 years and during that time obtained her degree in paralegal studies. She quickly identified the need for affordable legal services in her community and the lack of professional services available to the Hispanic community. It became her mission to advocate the underserved due to income levels and/or language barriers. Her desire is to bring a sense of awareness and confidence to those who choose to self-represent. She founded Castillo’s Legal Life Support as a California registered Legal Document Assistant in 2018. Lisa has a passion to bridge the gap for legal assistance for all people.

She quickly connected with the Solano Hispanic Chamber, so that she can be a resource and advocate for small businesses, focusing on minority owners who need additional support. She is knowledgeable, compassionate, and resourceful. Lisa is not an attorney but has the necessary education and experience to help you. Why did I join the Chamber: My expectation of joining the chamber was to connect with those who had the same passion and drive that I have in supporting small businesses and providing professional services to the Hispanic community where language barriers exist.

Why do I serve on the board: I decided to serve on the board in hopes to be a resource in developing and moving forward the Chamber by using my experience I gained with working for local government; to serve as a bridge between small business owners and government agencies.

In 2017, he founded DigitalTrack Digital Marketing, a Solano-based digital marketing agency that helps locally owned restaurants increase their online presence.

Beyond his business, Leo has served in multiple roles within the Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, including the president of the board.”

Why did you join the chamber of commerce?

“I joined the Chamber of Commerce in 2017 because I had just launched my business and was seeking to establish connections with other local entrepreneurs. I was eager to expand my professional network and gain access to resources that would enhance my understanding of business operations, as it was my first venture into business ownership. Joining the chamber not only helped me fulfilled these goals, but also offered even more benefits. Taking on leadership roles within the chamber compelled me to deepen my knowledge and skills so that I could effectively serve the community I am passionate about – the Hispanic-owned businesses in Solano County.”

What is your goal this year for being the first ED?

“As the Executive Director of the Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SHCC) in 2023, my primary goal for this year is to foster organizational growth and stability by guiding the transition to new leadership. My vision for SHCC is to be a resilient, trusted organization that effectively supports, celebrates, and recognizes the accomplishments of Hispanic businesses in Solano County.”

How do you feel SHCC would benefit from your involvement as a Board member?

I have served on the board, and I would like to continue to support the chamber. My involvement with another groups and Fairfield community can benefit SHCC.

I am, YAJAIRA V. RUBIO MACHADO founder/dance instructor of Moon Azteca Dance and Art School and owner of Lunita Kitchen a small home base business that specializes in gourmet food, pastries and gifts baskets for all occasions professionally founded in 2020.

We have a certified cottage kitchen by the Solano County Health Department, license by the city of Vallejo, certified by the food handling department and with a sellers permit by the State of California.

We love to share and help our community donating every time that is possible. My business was founded to help Moon Azteca Dance and Art School by donating 25% of profit sales to help them continue with their wonderful program. Lunitas kitchen is a very active small business that contributes to a lot of events in our community, we donated to every event that we get ask to help and we do it with lots of love.

Why did I become a member? I wanted to have my business out there and have other businesses know who we are.

Why did I join the chamber? to help small and Latino businesses have resources, help them grow, get them to be confident and believe that their business is worth promoting.

Inspired by the late Matt Garcia in 2008, the youngest member of the Fairfield City Council and a victim of gun violence, Doriss found her calling to public service. Since then, she has surrounded herself, worked and become involved with various community based organizations, non- profits and grassroot advocacy to give back and be of service to the city that raised her. Doriss is a board member of APAPA-Solano County Chapter, board member and past president of the Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. She is a past commissioner of the Solano Commission for Women and Girls, a member of the Fairfield-Suisun Rotary Club, and Voces Unidas de Solano. She also serves as a mentor for the Puente program at Solano Community College.

I joined the Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce because I believe that investing in my community will contribute to the growth and development of local businesses and future generations. I am passionate about bridging the gaps between individuals and resources in order to reach their optimum potential.

For that reason, I decided to join the Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Board, who is responsible for leading this work. In particular, building relationships and leveraging resources with the Latino community; who I share similar life experiences with. Mario is a community leader in HIV/AIDS Education and prevention, counselor, costume designer, events director/producer and community activist, and founder of Solano Aids Coalition. He has created many community events and has served as a board member for the Vallejo Naval Museum, Past VP and current board member of the SHCC, board member of Solano Serenity Center and board member of the Solano Library Foundation. making a difference one step at a time.

Why did I become a member of the chamber?

Because I represent a nonprofit organization an want to expand my network in the Hispanic Community

Because I want to be part of helping our Hispanic businesses grow and be successful.

Service is my calling, and helping others is my “Why”. I’m currently serving as a Police Sergeant in the Robbery/Homicide Division. I feel the Hispanic community is underrepresented in law enforcement. I’m using my platform to build bridges between law enforcement and the Hispanic community. I jumped at the opportunity to further serve my community by joining the Solano Hispanic Chambers of Commerce. I currently serve the chamber by being a board member. I share my law enforcement knowledge with the community. I take all the information I gather and bring it back to the department to make positive changes within.

Who We Are

The Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SHCC) was founded in 1989 by a group of Hispanic business leaders in Solano County, California.

Originally given the title Mexican Chamber of Commerce, the organization changed its name to Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as a result of a need to reflect the diversity of Hispanic and Latino cultures within the founding group.

The four founders were Manuel Cosme, Carlos Gutierrez, Maria Guzman Kennedy and Carlos Treviño. After the name change, more founders joined SHCC: Susy Sturgeon, Carlos Solorzano, Coco Corona, W.T. Jeanpierre

The chamber’s mission is to strengthen Solano County’s Hispanic businesses by advocating for opportunities that support their economic growth and by providing resources, training and tools, which advance development, prosperity and success in Solano County.

The SHCC is a nonprofit organization that is governed by a board of directors. The chamber offers a variety of programs and services to its members, including networking events, business training, and marketing assistance. The SHCC also advocates on behalf of Hispanic businesses in the county, working to ensure that they have access to the resources and opportunities they need to succeed. The SHCC has grown significantly since its founding. Today, the chamber has over 100 members and is one of the leading Hispanic chambers of commerce in California. The SHCC is committed to helping Hispanic businesses in Solano County grow and prosper, and it plays an important role in the economic development of the county.

The SHCC actively represents the interests of Hispanic-owned businesses, ensuring their needs are addressed and advocating for policies that support their economic growth and stability. “During the pandemic, the SHCC collaborated with local organizations to provide crucial resources to businesses in need due to closures or reduced operations,” says SHCC – Executive Director Leo Callejas. “This support helped mitigate the challenges faced by businesses and provided them with the assistance required to navigate through difficult times.”

Callejas adds that in collaboration with Sutter, the SHCC is developing a series of workshops in Spanish and resource fairs to support Hispanic businesses in Solano County. “These initiatives provide valuable knowledge, networking, and resources to entrepreneurs, helping them enhance their business strategies and grow sustainably,” he says. Finally, Callejas shares sponsors and members are also being featured within the Solano Hispanic Chamber Guide and Directory to further promote their businesses.

Chamber Events

CELEBRATIONS & MIXERS

The Suisun Waterfront Cinco de Mayo Celebration took place Saturday, May 6 2023, thanks to the combined efforts from The Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Solano County Black Chamber of Commerce and Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Chelu Car Club, Suisun City Business District, Veterans Foreign Wars Auxiliary, T.E.A.M. Hope, and the city of Suisun City, California.

The free family event celebrated Mexican culture and heritage with recognition of the Mexican army’s historic victory over France on May 5, 1862 during the Franco-Mexican war.

Attendees experienced live music, a classic and cool car and bike show (of all makes and models) and a number of booths with vendors representing a number of local restaurants in the region. Chambers also had booths set up for awareness and fundraising efforts. A mounted patrol from the sheriff’s department safeguarded the event, which drew a sizable crowd to the Suisun City business district at Suisun City Waterfront and Main Street in Suisun City, California.

The Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce partnered with the Dixon Chamber of Commerce to hold a joint mixer event Feb. 22, 2023 at Pedro’s Cocina in Dixon, California.

The free event attracted more than 80 guests to the restaurant, and attendees had the opportunity to promote their businesses, network with other local businesses and enjoy delicious Mexican food. Registration for the event was required - check back at the Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s events calendar for future similar events. Visit www.solanohcc.com/events.

In July 2023, The Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce worked with the Rio Vista Chamber on another free business mixer event with the Rio Vistas chamber.

The registration-required event was hosted by Spanish American Brazil International Food, a premier catering business based in Solano County with experienced chef Michael Torres.

On March 15, the chamber held a joint chamber mixer in Fairfield, California hosted by the Food Bank of Contra Costa and the Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Tours were given of the warehouse where food is distributed on a daily basis.

On April 19, the SHCC joined forces with the Benicia Chamber in Benicia, California to host another well-attended event sponsored by SHCC member Bay Hauling.

Vacaville, California was the place to be June 29 for this mixer, which gave attendees another chance to network, collaborate and promote their businesses.

When business owners join the Solano Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, they’re in it for the long haul.

For Maria Zuniga of State Farm Insurance, the Chamber is about connection. Both a role model and an advocate, Zuniga has been a State Farm policyholder since 1988. As a consumer, she diligently learned the inner workings of her policies as well as insurance in general.

When her agent got promoted, he said, “I wish someone like you was taking over my policy.”

Zuniga was intrigued. With a background in social work, not business, she asked how someone like her could qualify for the job.

“You don’t need the business degree,” he said. “You just need to be an honest hardworking people person.”

Zuniga decided to give it a try. “I went in with this idea of educating people on insurance and what it can do for them so they could make empowered and informed decisions,” she said.

She quickly found that her social work skills came into play. “You have people coming in crisis, or in response to an accident. You have to be able to calm them down before they can move on,” she said. “During the wildfires, there was a lot of trauma, so you have to move the person into an emotional state where they can take care of business.”

She joined the Chamber of Commerce as soon as she opened the business in 2009. “It was one of the first memberships I made sure to have,” she said. “When you’re developing a marketing plan, you want to be engaged with the centers of influence.

With stints as Chamber Treasurer and Chamber Secretary, she has been an integral part of the Chamber’s inner workings. But the biggest value she has seen has been the ability to get closer to the Spanish speaking community. “Sometimes clients are unaware of what insurance can do for them, and that validates my reason for going into this,” Zuniga said. “My goal is for people to have money when they need it most.”

José Govea of Govea Roofing built his business with his two brothers, and has been a member since he got his business license. The brothers started out working for a local roofing company in 2000. After 12 years, the owner decided to use contractors instead of full-time employees and the brothers started doing business as Govea Roofing.

“Little by little, we started hiring employees and now we have 10 people working for us,” Govea said.

The company specializes in all kinds of roof repairs. They can handle any kind of roofing materials, and can fix dry rot repairs, and most types of gutters. They also do roof maintenance, real estate inspections, and free estimates for general purposes.

They have been members of the Chamber since they got their business license in 2013.

“We wanted to be more into our Hispanic community, be more aware and involved so we can provide services for our community,” Govea said. “We like the system of how they communicate with the whole Hispanic community, we like their mixers, and we like how well organized they are. They really connect with the people.”

Their base of operations is Fairfield, right in the center of Solano County.

“In the beginning, it was a challenge to get known by the community,” Govea said. “But the Hispanic community and chamber helped us a lot by putting our name out there and getting our name recognized by members and the community, until a lot of people finally got to know us and use our services over the years.”

If you find yourself with something to get rid of, Juan Vallejos may be your guy. As Chief Executive Officer of Bay Hauling, Vallejos has carved out a niche as Solano County’s junk removal expert.

“I’m living the American Dream thanks to the junk removal industry,” said Vallejos. “We help people get rid of their unwanted items, anything from construction debris to household furniture. We offer services to both residential and commercial clients. There’s no job that’s too big or too small, whether someone needs a single item removed, or a full house of multiple loads, we can handle it.”

Vallejos began his career working construction with his father, a real estate investor who specialized in fixer uppers. Within a few years, he got his general building contractor license and bought a dump truck to do demolition jobs.

“Over time, people asked me to do clean ups at their houses or demolition jobs,” Vallejos said. “One of the things I learned how to do was to delegate the work. With the biggest jobs I went myself, but with smaller jobs, I sent a couple of guys. My guys were satisfied with their work, so I found I didn’t have to go on site myself as often. That was when I realized I had a business I could scale up.”

So Vallejos moved out of construction and into this untested niche of junk removal. Bay Hauling inhabits a unique niche in the industry as well. They’re a locally owned and operated family business that offers the same quality as national franchises. They are fully licensed and insured, separating them from other local owner/operator companies, but they offer same day appointments 7 days a week like a neighborhood business.

“I was able to use the lessons I learned as a contractor on these sites,” he said. “The key was that I was able to delegate, so I was able to scale so I could work on this business.”

Bay Hauling was recently certified as a minority owned business. They also recently received recognition from state legislators as a company who had shown that they were resilient enough to survive through the pandemic. In 2021, they were named Small Business of the Year by the Vallejo Chamber of Commerce.

“I try not to take too much credit,” said Vallejos. “We are very active in the community.”

The company supports fundraisers for groups like the PAL Boxing Club, and NFL Coach Sarna Flag Football League. They also offer up their trucks to help with toy drives or to help with cleanup at community events like Oktoberfest.

Vacaville Boys & Girls Club Nurtures Youth into
Engaged Citizens

The Vacaville Boys & Girls Club may provide services for families with boys and girls, but its long term goal is to mold them into young men and women. The nonprofit organization works with youth of all backgrounds across Solano County between the ages of six and 18.

“We provide life skills lessons to be applied during and after school,” said Chief Executive Anna Dinh Eaton. “We’re considered the best option for families who are working or need supervision of their kids, because we offer academic support and mentoring. An adult role model is really important.”

Since 2003, the Vacaville Boys & Girls Club has served thousands of local children. By fall of 2023, they’ll be serving youth out of nine locations. Four of the programs are for elementary school students, two for middle school, and three for high school age. Seven of these programs take place in the schools, with one being hosted in a community housing space and the other held in the current headquarters.

The Boys & Girls Club goes far beyond the typical arts and crafts or sports activities expected from child care organizations. They have a variety of programs offered within sports and recreation, the arts, healthy habits, character and leadership, as well as enrichment programs such as dance and music.

The programs are age appropriate. As the kids get older, the programs get more advanced.

Teens are encouraged to participate in job shadowing and financial literacy. Outside organizations pitch in too. Toastmasters runs a program, and Upward Bound works to help teens know that college is with reach. The club provides support for teens needing to learn the nuts and bolts about applying for college, career exploration, and what else may be involved in pursuing a career.

In addition to personal development, the Vacaville Boys & Girls Club also provides structure for the kids to become more involved with their community, including sorting food at the food bank, running a toy drive for underserved kids, and preparing meals, serving food, and cleaning up in soup kitchens.

“The purpose is to provide enrichment opportunities they may not otherwise have,” said Eaton. “That means bringing them to theatrical performances, museums, major league sporting events, or even just to a hill to go sledding.

The Boys & Girls club has 25 employees and serves 450 kids from Vacaville and the surrounding community. They’re building a new 8,000 square foot headquarters on Brown Street. The ability to raise funds for the new facility is a testament to the symbiotic relationship the club has with the surrounding community, since much of the $4.7M in funds were raised from local businesses.

“Many individuals and businesses have helped us to raise the money for our building,” said Eaton, noting the support of the community. “It’s not just the funds, it’s the volunteering.”
