Our Chamber’s journey began in 1976 as The Breakfast Club and evolved into the Smithville Area Chamber of Commerce, officially incorporated on December 19, 1989. Today, we are proud to be a thriving organization with over 200 members and a dedicated Board of Directors, all committed to advancing the economic, industrial, professional, and civic welfare of our area. As a major player in our business community, we are devoted to providing valuable resources and opportunities to foster growth and prosperity.

Smithville’s Appeal - and Population - Continues to Grow

There are a variety of recreational and leisure opportunities, vibrant businesses in a charming downtown, some of the top schools in Missouri, and a community where you can enjoy a quiet life all while being on the northern edge of the Kansas City Metropolitan area. No wonder Smithville’s population has steadily been increasing over the last 30-plus years.

Located along the Little Platte River in Clay and Platte counties, Smithville, which covers just 16.25 square miles, has four pocket parks, three neighborhood parks, one community park, and one regional park property for a total of 310 park acres and the 1.5-mile Main Street Trail connects downtown Smithville to Smithville Lake, according to the City of Smithville’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan 2030.

Smithville Lake is another must visit. Popular activities on and near the 7,200-acre lake include boating, fishing, kayaking, camping, and walking, mountain biking, and equestrian along 61 combined miles of trails.

Smithville’s Main Street District is a welcoming spot for residents and visitors alike as this quaint downtown area – many of the buildings located here were built in the late 1800s, according to the Smithville Historical Society and Smithville Historical Museum – is home to “specialty boutiques and unique food and drink options.”

Quality schools are another big draw as the Smithville R-II School District, “which operates three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school,” scored in the top 5% of all Missouri K-12 school districts in its last annual performance report.

According to the City of Smithville’s Adopted FY2024 Operating Budget & Five-Year Capital Improvement Plan, almost 40% of the city’s 11,000 residents is comprised of students as “young families continue to move to the City to enroll their children in the schools.”

The City of Smithville anticipates its population will continue growing – it more than doubled from 1990-2000 and has increased by an annual growth rate of nearly 4% since 2000 – and there will be 13,500-15,000 residents in 2030.

Uncovering Smithville’s History

For those seeking to uncover Smithville, MO’s rich history, a great place to start is the Smithville Historical Museum and Inn, located on 210 N. Bridge Street. The Museum is the located in the Patterson House – a Victorian home built in 1886 by New York native William Henry Patterson, a long-time mill owner believed to be close friends with Frank James (Jesse James’ older brother), whom he fought alongside in the cavalry during the Civil War’s Battle of Wilson’s Creek.

Smithville Historical Museum and Inn Curator Frank Justus shares Patterson’s story as just one among the many that have been passed down since Smithville’s founder, Humphrey Smith, arrived in the Little Platte Valley with his wife and seven children in 1822. He shares that in the 1840s, “the U.S. Land Office granted 80 acres of the original townsite to Calvin Smith, son of Humphrey Smith, and the town was officially renamed Smithville,” in 1836. The town was first incorporated in 1867. According to the City of Smithville, “the Smith’s established Smith’s Mill, the first water-powered flour mill in Clay County. A town eventually grew up around the mill and the village became known as Smith’s Mill.” According to the Smithville, Missouri’s Historical Society, after the passing of Humphrey’s wife, Nancy in 1853, Humphrey returned to Smithville and he was buried on the farm of his son Hiram. An outspoken abolitionist, Humphrey requested his children leave his grave unmarked until Missouri became a free state. Following his wishes, an epitaph reflecting his beliefs about human rights was placed after the Civil War.

Justus’ daily tours through the Patterson House, which was gifted to the city in 1966, show guests a variety of Smithville artifacts such as a solid walnut desk that was in Missouri’s first state capitol in St. Charles and later in a Smithville newspaper office for years, and an original Abraham Lincoln assassination newspaper Patterson brought from Upstate New York.

Along with the Patterson House, one of the most historically important buildings in Smithville is the Apollo House on Main Street. The home, now privately owned, was the former family home of Charles M. Evans, who founded the Apollo Lithia Bottling Works in 1902. Evans later developed a soda pop, and the thriving company (the Apollo Soda Pop Factory) operated until 1942, according to a 2013 Downtown Smithville Historic Resources Survey. The statue of Apollo, which Evans and his wife, Alice, purchased at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, remains on the home’s cupola.

A brief history of Smithville would not be complete without mentioning the Jefferson Highway. Construction of this route – which ran from Winnipeg, Canada, to New Orleans – began in 1917 and was completed in 1922. “The Jefferson Highway was a boom for Smithville in the 1920s,” according to the Smithville Historical Museum. “There were four hotels, grocery stores, general stores, drugstores and hardware stores.  There was also the Kansas City-Smithville Horse Racetrack with thousands attending the horse races. Downtown Smithville was packed with people every Saturday night.”

Plenty of Spots for Relaxation and Recreation in Smithville

While the world was locking down during the COVID-19 pandemic, outdoor greenspaces, parks, and recreational facilities served as havens of respite. Those critically important public spaces continue to be popular spots for relaxation and recreation for those who live and visit Smithville.

“Parks and recreation became more popular during COVID since you could still be outside and enjoy nature,” said City of Smithville Parks and Recreation Director Matthew Denton. “We were really able to show that parks and recreation was a necessity.”

The Parks and Recreation Department now has the financial resources to make necessary upgrades to the city’s parks, which include four pocket parks, three neighborhood parks, one community park, and one regional park for a total of 310 park acres. As of November 2020, a .5% (half-cent) park and stormwater sales tax has been placed on retail sales within the City of Smithville. This tax “provides dedicated funding for stormwater control and capital improvements to local parks.”

“That right there was a huge impact for our department,” Denton said.

Completed in June 2021, the City of Smithville’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan 2030 provides “an ambitious 10-year redevelopment of Smithville’s parks and recreation infrastructure and programming.” As part of this plan, Diamond Crest and Emerald Ridge Parks were the primary focus during the first three years.

Upgrades to the 3.79-acre Diamond Crest Park were completed in 2022 and include a new splash pad, playground, and an old railroad trail.

At Emerald Ridge Park, Denton said construction of the new park and updated playground was anticipated to finish by the end of October 2024.

The Smithville Parks and Recreation Department also manages the 250-plus-acre Smith’s Fork Campground, which offers 83 campsites and is open from April 1-October 1.

The Clay County Parks Department, meanwhile, operates Smithville’s two other campgrounds, Crows Creek and Camp Branch Campgrounds. “Those campgrounds have more than 700 campsites combined,” said John Davis, Clay County interim parks director.

Camping is just one of many activities residents and visitors can enjoy near or on Smithville Lake, which has greater than 175 miles of shoreline. “Some of the most popular activities are boating and fishing,” Davis said. “We also have three marinas, two 18-hole golf courses (at the Paradise Pointe Golf Complex), disc golf courses, a dog park, two swim beaches (Camp Branch Beach and Little Platte Beach), and a trap range that was hit by a tornado in April – and there is a project ongoing to rebuild the clubhouse that was destroyed.”

Additionally, the trail system at Smithville Lake includes 37 miles of asphalt walking/biking trails, 11 ½ miles of mountain biking trails, and 32 miles of equestrian trails, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which “operates Smithville Dam for flood control, water supply, recreation, and fish and wildlife enhancement.”

Preparing Students for
Future Successes

There is plenty of good work being done inside the classrooms throughout the Smithville School District (SSD), but that is just part of what is preparing the district’s students for future successes.

There are currently more than 2,500 students enrolled in K-12 and nearly 90 in Pre-K in the district. SSD boasts an 18:1 student-teacher ratio with 80% of the teachers having five or more years of experience and 70% holding at least a master’s degree.

According to SSD’s most recent Annual Performance Report, it earned 91.3% of all points possible (which SSD said was “well above our neighboring districts”) to rank in the top 5% of all Missouri K-12 school districts. Named to U.S. News and World Report’s “Best High Schools” list, SSD is also proud of its 98% graduation rate.

“What happens in the classroom at Smithville School District is just the beginning of preparing students for a lifetime of learning,” said Mindy Hedgecorth, SSD Communication Specialist.

For example, the SSD created a Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council comprised of middle and high school students “to create a better learning and school environment for all students.”

Additionally, Eagle Heights Elementary School implemented a Green Thumb Club whose mission “is to transform their school into a greener, more vibrant environment.”

SSD also strongly believes in pursuing excellence in building strong partnerships with parents and the community. Thanks to that community support for the district, a $17.5 million no-tax-rate increase bond passed in April 2023 that has funded a number of projects throughout SSD.

“The key project for this General Obligation bond was the transportation facility,” Hedgecorth said. “Prior to this, the SSD did not have an onsite transportation facility.”

The new Transportation Facility at Highway 92 and Horizon Drive now serves as a hub for its new transportation provider, Durham School Services, which replaces longtime provider Coulter Bus Service “with a fleet of 24 buses (covering) 18 routes.”

“So far we’ve (been) very pleased with the services Durham School Services has been providing us,” Hedgecorth said.

Another recently completed project is the District’s main campus sidewalks.

“Now you can navigate (buildings) and use the sidewalk the entire way,” Hedgecorth said. “There is also a sidewalk that if students are walking to school, they have access to the school from Commercial Avenue. The City of Smithville has a future Commercial Avenue sidewalk project to tie into our campus sidewalk system.”

Inside Smithville High School, the gymnasium expansion and remodeling project is finished, Hedgecorth said. With the mezzanine walls behind the bleachers removed and larger bleachers added, the gymnasium’s capacity has expanded 50% to 1,500.

At Smithville Middle School and Horizon Elementary School, new rooftop HVAC units have been in place since summer of 2023. The VAV (Variable Air Volume) terminal boxes that were also installed help by “optimizing the amount and temperature of distributed air.”

Another recent upgrade at Smithville Middle School is the transition of the athletic field to turf.

In terms of improved safety and security throughout the district, the SSD continues to make regular upgrades including updating intercom systems, replacing old cameras, and adding new cameras to provide better visibility across all areas of the district.

Smithville Community in Action (CIA)

Smithville Community In Action (CIA) is a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to ensuring a safe and healthy environment for the youth of Smithville. Since its founding in 1994, Smithville CIA has focused on mitigating the harmful effects of drug culture on young people by fostering community involvement and promoting positive choices. The coalition’s ultimate goal is to prevent youth substance abuse and to build resilience in the local youth population, enabling them to reach their full potential.

To achieve this, Smithville CIA has adopted a data-driven approach, evaluating local conditions to understand the factors contributing to substance use among youth. They conduct training and education sessions, promote positive messaging about prevention, and offer healthy, supervised events for young people. Initiatives like the “All Stars” prevention curriculum provided to the school district, and collaborations with local retailers to reduce youth access to alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, and other substances, are all part of their comprehensive strategy.

By focusing on community engagement and youth empowerment, Smithville CIA continues to create a safer environment where young people can thrive and make positive life choices.

The Rotary Club is always seeking new members to volunteer their time for community service and fundraising efforts. Guided by the motto “Service Above Self,” they strive to make a positive impact on the community. With more members, they can accomplish even more for the Smithville area. Dr. Linda Buckmiller, current Rotary President and a dedicated member for over 25 years, believes in the importance of working together to create a thriving community for families and individuals alike.
