Welcome to the Neighborhood!

As President of the Silver Lake Chamber of Commerce and a proud local Realtor, I’m thrilled to present this year’s directory, showcasing the amazing members who make Silver Lake one of LA’s most famously trendy neighborhoods.

Silver Lake is more than a place to live—it’s a place to thrive. Our variety of businesses, from coffee shops and boutiques to acclaimed restaurants and architectural landmarks, make this neighborhood truly special and offer something for everyone.

Living in Silver Lake means being part of a creative, inclusive, and sustainable community. Our parks, trails, and the Silver Lake Reservoir are perfect for relaxation and recreation. The farmers’ market, music scene and community events keep Silver Lake a cultural and creative enclave.

Working in Silver Lake is equally rewarding. Despite the challenges of the past year, our local businesses have shown their strength and creativity. They have adapted to the changes with expanded outdoor dining, pop-ups, collaborations, and innovative online services, keeping our neighborhood buzzing. Our Chamber networking events and cooperative efforts provide opportunities for members to grow and succeed.

Playing in Silver Lake is always an experience. Whether exploring the shops on Sunset Boulevard, enjoying live music, or dining at our eateries, there is always something to do. In addition to Sunset, the vibrant business corridors along Hoover Street, Hyperion Avenue, and Silver Lake Boulevard are packed with cafes, shops, and services.

Our neighboring communities add to the vibrant character of our area. Atwater Village features eclectic shops, and lots of dining options. Los Feliz is known for its coffee shops, brunch spots, historic architecture, restaurants, and nightlife. Griffith Park offers hiking trails, the Griffith Observatory, the Greek Theatre, and the LA Zoo. Virgil Village is celebrated for its mix of eateries, bars, art spaces, and boutique shopping.

It takes a village, so a big thank you to Alex Trampus, our marketing director, and our volunteer Silver Lake Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for their hard work. Special thanks to our Chamber members for their contributions, including dues, donations, and advertising, which are vital for the Chamber to continue supporting businesses in our community.

Fatima is a renowned real estate agent, best-selling author, and designer rooted in Los Feliz, with an additional office in Beverly Hills. With over 14 years in the neighborhood, she is known for her passion, integrity, negotiating skills, and market knowledge, making her a trusted real estate advisor. A Chamber member since 2017 and Board member since 2020, Fatima upgraded the organization by creating an integrated website, modernizing operations, updating policies, hosting events, and promoting local businesses. She currently serves as Vice President of the non-partisan League of Women Voters of Los Angeles County, focusing on voter education and advocating on public policy issues, including environmental policy, voting rights, and social justice.

She joined the Board in 2008 while managing a sustainable living center in Silver Lake. In September 2021, she represented Silver Lake and nearby communities as the City of Los Angeles Redistricting Commissioner for Council District 13. She currently works in Public Relations for political campaigns.

Brittany sells real estate because she loves it; she brings her heart and soul to meet the needs of her clients and their families at any cost. She’s received many accolades during her ten years at Keller Williams, including Rookie of the Year. Brittany joined the Chamber in 2017 and has been a Board member since 2018. She prides herself on building quality relationships within the community, and her business is based on integrity and customer service. Brittany also leads her office in a day of service known as Red Day, where every KW office worldwide participates in offering a day of service to their community and those in need.

Gloria has been a Silver Lake resident for two decades. She currently serves on the Parent Advisory Board for Central City Value High School and co-chairs the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council’s Executive Board representing District 4. Gloria has also been on the Silver Lake Chamber Board of Directors for 8 years. She served as Fundraising Director at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School for many years and was a member of the Vista Charter Middle School Site Council. With a background as a former hair salon owner and V.P. of the United Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Ontario, CA, she brings valuable experience to her community roles.

History of the Silver Lake Chamber of Commerce

In 1987, I was approached by Deborah Goodale of the Back Door Bakery about starting a Chamber of Commerce for Silver Lake. Silver Lake was becoming more desirable to live and do business in, so Deb thought we should create a cultural and business organization where people could get information about the community. I was reluctant, saying that I wasn’t much of a businessperson, but Deb convinced me — it helped when a patient suggested that a Silver Lake Chamber could be “alternative” and that we could define it however we liked!

When we looked at the local businesses, we found that there were far more home-based ones than storefronts, with a total of 650 combined. We decided to create a directory of members and charged $25 to be included in the booklet. There was no internet yet, so it was hard copy only; Medicus Printing designed and printed 100 copies for us. Our initial membership was about 25 supportive souls and we gave them directories to distribute. More people joined to help (they eventually became the Board of Directors), and we continued to solicit members and print a new Directory every year. We grew slowly, but never gave up.

Around 1998, Ken Molina became the Vice President and brought in new ideas, including dividing Silver Lake into five business districts: Sunset, Silver Lake Blvd, Glendale Blvd, Rowena and Hyperion, and adding an “At Large” category for home-based businesses. Ronald Wright, a wonderful graphic designer, created a new look for the cover of the Directory and some very hip “Silver Lake Rocks” lamppost banners, which we had installed up and down our main streets.

Our new CD13 Councilmember Eric Garcetti was interested in developing more business in the area and encouraged us to collaborate with other nearby chamber leaders, including Hollywood Chamber’s LeRon Gubler. Suddenly, we were on the map! LeRon and Eric, as well as Councilmember Tom LaBonge from CD4, all helped our business community immeasurably; we owe thanks to them for the success that Silver Lake has become.

If anything helped us to really establish our trendy, inclusive and community-oriented brand, it was the Queen of Silver Lake pageant, which we produced in 2001, 2002 and 2003 as a fundraiser for local nonprofits. Thousands came, and we made the news across the City. Paul Redmond, still a very active Chamber member today, made a fabulous documentary called “Tucking Beauty,” which is on the SLNC website and the SL History Collective YouTube channel. Those were wonderful days!

Over the next few years, as the Silver Neighborhood Council formed and took on many of the local issues, the Chamber mainly focused on business concerns. There were literally hundreds of new businesses in Silver Lake and so there was plenty for us to do. I finally moved on to other priorities after 26 years as President; the Chamber has been under excellent guidance ever since.

Community Spaces and Places to Enjoy and Explore

Silver Lake’s amazing attractions include public spaces such as the Sunset Triangle Plaza, the Silver Lake Reservoir and our historic painted staircases. Nearby, the LA River bike path and parklets offer even more opportunity for relaxing, exercising or birdwatching.

The Silver Lake Reservoir is owned by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. It’s one of 10 reservoirs in Los Angeles and was created to help provide drinking water to more than half a million homes in the Los Angeles area. While Silver Lake is quite urban, the area surrounding the Reservoir provides an oasis among all the concrete and is a favorite of locals and visitors alike. There’s something for everyone:

The walking path is a 2.2 mile loop which lends itself equally to a leisurely stroll or to a run; bring a friend, partner, pet—or all of the above—and enjoy the views and the company.

At the south end of the Lake, the Silver Lake Recreation Center offers a park and playground for kids to enjoy and a basketball court for all. The nearby fenced dog parks (one is reserved for the smaller pups) are available for those who want to give their dogs a chance to play off-leash.

There’s also a large grassy area separate from the walking path called the Silver Lake Meadow. It’s a perfect spot to park an artist easel for the day, bring a picnic or simply sit and enjoy the sun for a few minutes. Need a book to read? No problem—just walk around the neighborhood until you come across one of several Little Free Libraries nearby, or to the Silver Lake Branch Library right around the corner.

Historic Stairways More than 50 historic (and largely decorated) staircases in the neighborhood offer endless adventure, places to sit and people-watch, or even a great workout. Locals and visitors alike enjoy seeking out their favorites—visit them all and choose yours! Colorful creativity, geometric shapes, staircases painted to look like pianos, incredible murals, recognizable locations from great films (Laurel & Hardy!); Silver Lake is home to them all.

The Sunset Triangle Plaza is an 11,000 square-foot area which reclaims some of the street for cyclists and pedestrians. The Plaza used to be part of a two-lane road, but it’s now a car-free zone with umbrella tables and welcoming chairs, surrounded by local restaurants. The Plaza is managed by the Silver Lake Improvement Association and is often seen in films, TV shows and ads.

Sunset Junction is a great place to spend an afternoon or evening.

Shopping in Silver Lake

Whether you’re looking for a gift, household goods or a new outfit for yourself, you can help “Keep the Silver in Silver Lake” by shopping at any of our unique local shops. Many of them offer original, high-quality goods made in Los Angeles, some right in the neighborhood —you never know what you’ll find! Shopping locally is good for the environment, good for the local Silver Lake economy and great for your home and wardrobe.

Some of the shopping hubs include the ever-popular Sunset Boulevard, the shops along Hyperion Street and Rowena Avenue and those along Silver Lake Boulevard, near the south end of the Reservoir. In between are restaurants and cafés where you can stop for refreshments before checking out the next store. You can skip the big box corporate chains, we’ve got everything you need right here.

Arts & Entertainment

More than a few famous bands, including Beck and Local Natives, have launched their careers from Silver Lake stages. The Silver Lake Lounge, one of the oldest nightlife venues in Los Angeles, has been an important spot for the indie music scene, showcasing bands like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Rilo Kiley. Other iconic clubs include The Virgil, where Lady Gaga’s character Ally performed in the movie “A Star is Born.” Beloved venue Spaceland (currently shuttered) was yet another stage which gave many musicians a first chance at fame. Casita del Campo famously hosted the Queen of Silver Lake pageant (produced by the Silver Lake Chamber of Commerce), which sparked a documentary called “Tucking Beauty.”

Art is everywhere in Silver Lake; many walls have beautifully-painted murals, and the hidden (and often decorated) staircases are worth a look, as is the famous “Chandelier” tree. Don’t forget to check out the Neutra Institute Gallery and Museum for the most recent exhibit. The Music Box Steps Day celebrates Laurel & Hardy (and humor in general) every October. Music, art and film are just some of what gives Silver Lake its reputation as a neighborhood of creatives and artists.

Architecture & Design

Silver Lake is well-known for its innovative Mid-century architecture, Streamline Moderne, Mediterranean-style celebrity estates from the 1920s and ‘30’s and so much more. Many world-famous architects are represented, including Richard Neutra, Rudolf Schindler, Gregory Ain, John Lautner, Robert Farquhar and Eugene Choy, to name a few.

There are also many repurposed historical gems throughout the neighborhood, such as an early Walt Disney Studio on Hyperion Avenue (now Gelson’s), Canfield-Moreno Estate (now the Paramour Estate) and the Good Ship Grace (now a recording studio). Modern architecture is also dotted throughout Silver Lake, as well as ranch, Craftsman and mixed-style homes. The diversity of the architecture reflects Silver Lake’s reputation for eclectic and creative lifestyles.

Architectural firms in the neighborhood range from the well-established to the up-and-coming. Some of the forward-thinking local architectural firms have recently been highlighted in the press for their accessory dwelling units (ADUs). These smaller homes combine innovative design with a very small footprint and are one of many solutions for the City’s housing crisis.

Residents who would like to pick up mulch should bring their own shovel and bag, containers or pickup truck. The Free Mulch program allows residents to take as much mulch as they need, but mulch is for residential use only.
