Tulare County is located in the Central Valley of California, about 3 hours north of Los Angeles and
3.5 hours south of San Francisco on the 99 freeway. With the Sierra Nevada Mountains as a stunning
backdrop, the county serves as a gateway to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, the Sequoia
National Forest, Giant Sequoia National Monument and many other outdoor destinations, and welcomes
visitors with hotels, restaurants, attractions, shopping and more.
Air service is available through Fresno-Yosemite International Airport or Meadows Field in Bakersfield.
Amtrak and Greyhound also provide service to the region, dropping and picking up at the Visalia Transit
Center in downtown Visalia.
The Sequoia Shuttle offers seasonal, affordable and convenient round-trip shuttle bus service
(wheelchair-accessible) to Sequoia National Park from Visalia, Exeter, Lemon Cove and Three Rivers.

As you enter Sequoia National Park, you are stepping into ancient Yokuts territory, including
the ancestral lands of the Tule River Tribe. Tulare County, home to these lands, remains deeply

Walk Among the World’s Largest
and Most Majestic Trees
Among these wonders, the Giant Sequoias reign supreme. Walking into a sequoia grove is like stepping
into an ancient sanctuary, where towering cinnamon-colored trunks stretch skyward, some exceeding 300
feet in height and over 100 feet in circumference. These hardy trees have survived for millennia —
one of the oldest is thought to be over 3,000 years old.
Home to six of the 10 largest trees on Earth, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks offer an
unparalleled glimpse into the ancient world. At the heart of this grove is the General Sherman
Tree, the largest living organism on the planet by volume. Estimated at 2,100 years old and
weighing 2.7 million pounds, this magnificent tree stands 275 feet tall and has a base circumference of
102 feet. Visitors can follow a short, half-mile trail lined with benches to witness this living
monument to nature’s power and endurance.
In summer, free shuttles transport visitors to the Sequoia National Park from nearby Visalia, ensuring
ease of access during busy weekends when private vehicles are restricted. Seasonal changes bring their
own magic; while summer showcases vibrant greenery, winter transforms the area into a serene
snow-covered wonderland.
The Majestic Ascent of Moro Rock
Beyond the sequoias, Moro Rock provides another way to connect with the park’s
grandeur. This iconic granite dome rises high above the forest floor, offering a climb as
rewarding as it is awe-inspiring. A stairway of over 350 steps leads to its summit, where panoramic
views stretch from the San Joaquin Valley in the west to the Great Western Divide in the east. The

landscapes. While the climb can be challenging for some, due to steep drop-offs and thinner air at

Exploring The Northern Sequoia Regions

The northeast region of Tulare County is comprised of Sequoia National Park, Kings Canyon National
Park, Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument.
The combined lands of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, the Sequoia National Forest and the
Giant Sequoia National Monument have a dramatic presence and undeniable beauty. Starting in the
foothills and stretching across the Great Western Divide, these diverse areas promise to inspire with
towering, old-growth forests of giant sequoias, plunging glacial canyons, deep river valleys, pristine
alpine lakes, massive granite monoliths and soaring mountain peaks, including the highest point in the
contiguous 48 United States – Mount Whitney, at 14,494 feet (4,418 meters).

Popular Attractions
Giant Forest Museum is a great starting point for you to explore. Learn the story of
the giant sequoias and the Giant Forest on a stroll around beautiful Round Meadow. Trail-side exhibits
help tell the story of the park on this 1-mile, paved, wheelchair-accessible looped trail.
Big Meadow is located a short drive off the Generals Highway in Giant Sequoia National
Monument and Sequoia National Forest. Hiking or horseback riding into the Jennie Lakes Wilderness and
fly fishing in Big Meadows Creek are popular activities. Horse Corral Pack Station provides horses for
rent and Horse Camp provides overnight camping with horses and mules. Hume Lake, only 15 miles away,
offers fishing and non-motorized boating opportunities.
Buck Rock Lookout can be accessed along the road into Big Meadows. Perched atop a
granite dome at 8,502 feet, this lookout offers a stunning 360-degree view across the San Joaquin Valley
to the Coast Range, and across the mountains to the Great Western Divide, featuring some of the highest
peaks in the Sierra Nevada. Built in 1923 and accessed by a series of stairs, this working fire lookout
is one of three existing 4-A-style live-in cabs in the world. Open daily to visitors during the summer

The Congress Trail is a 2-mile, mostly paved loop that wanders through some of the
most magnificent giant sequoias. After visiting the General Sherman Tree, hop on the Congress Trail and
prepare to be amazed by the size and beauty of the trees, including “The President”
(third-largest giant sequoia) and the House and Senate Groups. Keep an eye out for deer and bears. They
appear to enjoy the Giant Forest as much as we do.
Crescent Meadow was one of John Muir’s favorite places and, when you see it,
you’ll understand why. The Crescent Meadow Trail is well maintained and not strenuous, so even the
little ones can enjoy it. This serene meadow is surrounded by giant sequoias that stand watch and
provide some great photo opportunities. Take a short side trip to nearby Log Meadow. The trail will take
you to Tharp’s Log, where a pioneer once lived inside the trunk of a fallen giant sequoia. Visit
at sunset and watch deer grazing in the meadow as the last light of the day illuminates the tops of the
giant sequoias.
Moro Rock is a giant granite dome located near the center of the park. It offers
spectacular views of the Great Western Divide, Castle Rocks and the eastern half of Sequoia National
Park. Climb to the summit of Moro Rock following a steep quarter-mile railed staircase, where you can
enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Crystal Cave
Explore the underground world of Sequoia National Park with a Sequoia Parks Conservancy Field Institute
naturalist leading you through this naturally adorned cave of impressive chambers and magnificent
formations. Crystal Cave is open in the summer (weather and road conditions permitting). First
discovered by Sequoia National Park employees in 1918, this spectacular cave has been a visitor favorite
since tours began in 1940. A variety of tours are offered through the season. Cave tours require a

Mineral King is a pristine alpine valley, so appealing that in the 1960s, Walt Disney
decided it was the ideal setting for a swiss chalet-themed ski resort. His plans were abandoned in 1978
when Congress passed legislation making Mineral King part of Sequoia National Park, protecting the
area’s beauty for future generations to enjoy. Mineral King provides day hikers and backpackers
with some of the most direct access to Sierra high country. There are numerous opportunities for day
hikes to alpine lakes, with great fishing and towering mountain peaks, but be prepared for a climb as
these mountains are steep and rugged. Looking for something a little easier? Just take a stroll up this
magnificent valley and turn around whenever you please. Two campgrounds are located along Mineral King
Road, with only tent camping allowed. The road to Mineral King is winding and has vehicle restrictions.

Mount Whitney
At 14,494 feet (4,418 meters), Mount Whitney is the tallest peak in the contiguous United States,
offering unparalleled views and a challenge for adventurers. Straddling the boundary between Sequoia
National Park and Inyo National Forest, this iconic mountain is a bucket-list destination for hikers and
mountaineers. The 22-mile round-trip hike via the Whitney Trail includes over 6,100 feet of elevation
gain, requiring careful preparation, permits, and respect for its wilderness. As the southern terminus
of the John Muir Trail, Mount Whitney combines natural beauty with profound significance for outdoor

The General Grant Tree, estimated to be between 1,800 and 2,000 years old, is the
centerpiece of Grant Grove in Kings Canyon National Park. At 267 feet tall and nearly 29 feet wide at
its base, it is the second-largest tree in the world. It was named in 1867 to honor Ulysses S. Grant and
was designated “the Nation’s Christmas Tree” by President Calvin Coolidge. On
Veteran’s Day 1956, the Eisenhower administration dedicated the General Grant Tree as a living
shrine to all who have fought and died protecting our country.
Hospital Rock
The Tulare County foothills are dotted with many sites containing Native American rock art known as petroglyphs. Between the entrance to Sequoia National Park and the Giant Forest Museum is the Hospital Rock picnic area. From the parking lot, cross the road to explore the enormous shelf-like granite boulder supported by several lesser rocks. This natural formation served as a hospital for early area inhabitants. Look for the reddish colored pictographs on the southern exposure of one of the rocks. The markings are believed to have been made by members of the Potwisha tribe, which settled in the area as early as 1350 A.D.

EXPLORING THE SOUTHERN SEQUOIA REGIONS
Sequoia National Forest & Giant Sequoia National Monument
This area is comprised of the Sequoia National Forest and the Giant Sequoia National Monument,
making it one of the most geographically diverse and remote in the country.
This spectacular region in the southeastern portion of Tulare County is often less crowded and offers
so much for those looking for adventure, exploration and a diverse landscape — with rolling
foothills skirting the western edge of the Sierra, to majestic giant sequoia groves, high mountain
peaks, steep river valleys, alpine lakes and the high desert in the east. Regardless of the season, this
area has much to offer.
Popular Attractions
The Trail of 100 Giants is a paved, fully accessible hiking path that meanders through
a stand of giant sequoias, some up to 1,500 years old. A self-guided tour offers 20 interpretive
stations. Walk alongside a fallen giant and gain a true appreciation for the size of these trees. Stroll
at your leisure along the 1.3-mile-long trail within Long Meadow Grove on the Western Divide
Highway.
Dome Rock is a granite monolith just off the Western Divide Highway, offering
breathtaking views from its 400-foot summit. While ideal for visitors of all ages, it’s important
to exercise caution at the top, as there are no railings along the edge.
Bald Mountain Lookout provides a stunning, 360-degree view of the southern Sierra
Nevada, including Mount Whitney and the Domeland Wilderness. During the summer months, this lookout
tower can be accessed from the Sherman Pass Road above Johnsondale in the Sequoia National Forest.
Belknap Grove is made up of three smaller groves and is accessible along the moderate
3.7-mile Nelson Trail, starting from either Camp Nelson or the Quaking Aspen area. The 1,500-foot
elevation change along the Tule River makes for a perfect afternoon hike. Fishing is available along
most of the trail, and a campground is available for overnight stays.
Camping
Whether it’s a weekend or a weekday, there is plenty to see and do for the whole family. Many
improved campgrounds are available in the Sequoia National Forest. For a list of campgrounds and

Belknap Campground is nestled in the Camp Nelson community on the South Fork of the
Tule River. Enjoy camping out under the giant sequoias, fishing and hiking.
Quaking Aspen Campground is located just off the Highway 190, east of Porterville
and above Springville. The site is minutes away from many attractions and is an ideal base camp for
exploring the Sequoia National Forest. Camp in style by reserving a yurt or even the Quaking Aspen

Wishon Campground is open year-round with family campsites available by reservation,
and the Wishon Cabin is available for rent. Located in the Sequoia National Forest at an elevation of
4,000 feet, the campground straddles two forks of the Tule River with many hiking and fishing
opportunities.
Hiking & Trail Running
Dozens of day hikes are possible in this vast region. Some favorites:
The Freeman Creek Trail meanders through one of the largest giant sequoia groves with
more than 800 trees greater than 10 feet in diameter. It’s an 8.6-mile round-trip. To reach the
area from the bottom, take Lloyd Meadow Road from Johnsondale to the trailhead near the George Bush
Tree; from the top, take the North Road off Highway 190 to the trailhead.
The Needles Trail is a 5-mile hike out and back to Needles Ridge, a formation of
granite spires. The lookout burned down in 2011, but the scenery is breathtaking, including a view of
Mount Whitney, the Golden Trout Wilderness and the Kern River Valley.
Backpacking & Fishing
Maggie Lakes is a wonderful series of lakes nestled in the cirques of Maggie Mountain.
Enjoy climbs to the numerous peaks, great fishing and pristine water. Leave from Summit Trailhead and go
13 miles each way through picturesque meadows and great vistas. Backpack, ride horses or fish to your
heart’s content in the Golden Trout Wilderness, named for California’s brightly colored and
elusive state fish native to the area. This 304,000-acre wilderness area is located in the southern end
of the Sierra Nevada, with several hundred miles of scenic trails and the North and South forks of the
Kern River running through it. The easiest access is from Lloyd Meadows. A wilderness permit is required
and special restrictions apply.
The Domeland Wilderness has awe-inspiring domes, spires and crags rising out of
conifer forests. Domeland is perfect for those seeking a remote and crowdless getaway. Hike or ride
horseback into Manter Meadow, the largest meadow in the area. Great fishing, rock climbing and wildlife
viewing are available.
Rock Climbing
World-class rock climbing can be found throughout Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National
Monument. The Needles and Dome Rock offer some of the best crack and face climbing in the Sierra that
are easily accessible and without the crowds. Check out Church Domes in the Domeland Wilderness.

OHV Riding
Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) recreation is just one of the many uses allowed on National Forest lands. The
Sequoia National Forest offers many opportunities for OHV recreationists. State law requires
registration of all motor vehicles before being operated on public lands. You must have either a current
Green Sticker or Highway license, both issued by the state Department of Motor Vehicles. If
highway-licensed, the vehicle must meet all standards for operating on a public highway.

Venturing Out
You have just discovered one of the most exciting natural playgrounds in the world, with more than 1
million acres for fishing, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, rock climbing, biking, whitewater
rafting and OHV (Off Highway Vehicle) riding.
Mountain Biking
The Giant Sequoia National Monument is one of the only places in the world where you can bike along
trails through groves of giant sequoias. A network of trails accommodates cyclists of all experience
levels.
Relaxation
Now it’s time to sit back and enjoy nature’s bounty. Take your seat on a deck, or huddle
next to a campfire as wind rushes through the trees, bringing with it the sound of the distant trickling
of a mountain stream.
Winter Recreation
Winter is one of the best times to visit the area. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling
are popular activities. Snowmobiling is limited to designated routes in the Giant Sequoia National
Monument.
Quaking Aspen Meadow is a favorite destination for snow play, offering a picturesque
setting for winter activities. The surrounding network of roads is ideal for cross-country skiing and
snowmobiling, with snow grooming provided by the U.S. Forest Service in many areas. However, please note
that the County of Tulare closes the Western Divide Highway during the winter season and beyond,

Kern Plateau is equally accommodating for snowmobiles as it is for off-highway
vehicles. More than a dozen well-marked trails are open for over-snow vehicles, and hundreds of miles of

Let’s break it down by things to do. Our parks and forests are a natural playground, with
opportunities for every traveler to enjoy Tulare County’s northeast region.
Camping
Camping is the perfect way to immerse yourself in nature and experience the beauty of Sequoia National
Park. With plenty of options for both RV and tent camping, you can find the perfect spot to rest your
head under the stars. Popular options include Lodgepole Campground, which is near the Giant Forest and
offers day hikes to Tokopah Falls and high glacial lakes. Atwell Mill and Cold Springs campgrounds offer
tent-only camping near Mineral King Valley. Other campgrounds in the area include Big Meadow, Stony
Creek, Hume Lake, Princess, and Dorst Creek, while Buckeye Flat and Potwisha offer camping at lower
elevations.

Fishing
For some, no trip is complete without fishing. The Sierra Nevada offers some of the best trout fishing
in California. Cast a line at Hume or Kaweah lakes, or fly fish just steps away from your campsite on
the Kings or Kaweah rivers, or hike to more secluded alpine lakes in Mineral King, Jennie Lakes
Wilderness or the glacial Heather and Pear lakes out of Wolverton.

Hiking & Trail Running
Looking for some fun away from base camp? Here are a few trails you might be interested in for day
hiking or trail running. For wilderness permits, visit recreation.gov/permits/445857.
Tokopah Falls Trail
Take the 3.4 mi Tokopah Falls Trail from Lodgepole Campground along the Marble Fork of Kaweah River.
You’ll see Watchtower’s granite monolith rising 2,000 feet above the canyon floor. The easy
hike rises 630 feet, and in warmer months visitors can enjoy seasonal falls that plunge 1,300 feet in
half a mile. Explore the cliffs and granite playgrounds in summer. Be cautious of the river’s
swift current from snowmelt.
The Lakes Trail
Take the 11.5-mile Watchtower trail for a 2,700-foot altitude gain to reach four glacial lakes.
Watchtower at 3.4 miles, Heather Lake at 4.1 miles, Aster & Emerald Lake at 4.7 miles, and Pear Lake at
5.75 miles.
Jennie Lakes Wilderness
For outdoor fun, Tulare County’s northeast region offers a natural playground. For an easy hike,
follow the well-marked trail to Weaver Lake in Jennie Lakes Wilderness, Sequoia National Forest. This
7-mile round trip can be a day or overnight trip, ideal for families and backpackers alike.
Horseback Riding
Enjoy single- or multi-day guided rides offered by stables at Horse Corral in Sequoia National Forest,
as well as Grant Grove and Cedar Grove in Kings Canyon National Park. Horse camping is permitted at Big

Hamilton Lakes Trail
This week-long trek is a 31-mile out-and-back trail that leads to some of the best scenery and lakes in
Sequoia National Park. The trail takes you past stunning granite formations such as Sugarbowl Dome,
Angel Wings and Valhalla Towers, and ends at Hamilton Lake, which has excellent fishing and memorable
vistas. Plan ahead to enjoy hot showers, hearty meals and the comfort of a tent cabin on the first night
at Bearpaw Meadow High Sierra Camp.
The High Sierra Trail
This is a 62-mile point-to-point trail that traverses the Sierra Nevada between the big trees of the
Giant Forest and Mount Whitney. It winds through soaring peaks, glacial alpine lakes and plunging
canyons. You’ll need to arrange a shuttle from one side of the Sierras to the other, but the
effort is worth it.
Mountain Biking
Ready to get your pedals turning? Then come enjoy the National Forest land from the seat of a bicycle!
Any official trail on Forest Service land allows bicycles, with the exceptions of designated trails in
wilderness areas and the Pacific Crest Trail. There are literally hundreds of miles of trails and roads
to explore in the Sequoia National Forest. Many trails are steep or rocky and may be best suited for
advanced riders only. Contact the local Forest office before choosing a trail to ride.

The Hume Lake area has a number of biking opportunities on roads and trails that venture through giant
sequoia groves and include many stunning views. Converse Basin is crisscrossed with unmaintained mining
and logging roads that wind through a giant sequoia grove and offer some great vistas. Take Highway 180
toward the Chicago Stump and Converse Basin. Please note: Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks do not
allow bikes on trails.
Water Activities
Kaweah and Kings Rivers
There are plenty of opportunities for water recreation. Seasonal whitewater kayaking is available on
the Kaweah and Kings rivers, which are undammed until lower elevations. These rivers are ideal for
experienced kayakers seeking technical challenges. Watercraft restrictions apply to Kings Canyon and
Sequoia National Parks but not within Sequoia National Forest. Visit kaweahmarina.com for

Hume Lake
Hume Lake is perfect for non-motorized, flat-water activities, like kayaking and canoeing, while
swimming is available in areas with minimal water currents. Snowmelt feeds the water, so temperatures
are cold and water levels are unpredictable during spring runoff. Always be cautious when near rivers,
lakes and streams, as currents can be strong and dangerous even in calm-looking water. Watch out for
slippery and uneven river bottoms, swift currents, debris and other potential underwater hazards that
could cause you to lose your balance and be swept downstream. Ensure children are closely supervised
near the water, even if they’re not planning to enter, as accidents can happen in an instant.
Rock Climbing
Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks and Sequoia National Forest offer excellent climbing opportunities with quality rock similar to Yosemite National Park but without the crowds. Angel Wings, a stunning granite monolith with a 1,800-foot face, requires at least a day’s hike via the High Sierra Trail. For more information, visit nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/rockclimb.htm.

WINTER RECREATION
Explore some of the most gorgeous winter scenery in the world, and be inspired by the majesty
of snow-covered giant sequoias. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and sledding can all be enjoyed
within Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National
Monument.
Pear Lake Winter Hut
This historic cabin is available to the public from December to April (weather and trail conditions
permitting). The advanced-level ski and snowshoe trail offers a chance to explore the beautiful
wilderness of the Sierra Nevada mountain range during the winter months, with a cozy cabin waiting at
the end of your day. Begin your trip at Wolverton (7,200 feet) and ascend a steep 7 miles east to the
Pear Lake area (9,200 feet). The hut sleeps 10 people and offers many amenities to lighten your load.

Snowmobiling
Snowmobilers will find their paradise within Sequoia National Forest at the Cherry Gap, Big Meadow and
Millwood winter trailheads. Plow through the snow among the giant sequoias, and savor the breathtaking

Tulare County is rich in history
When Tulare County was established in 1852, it was already home to the Yokuts Indians, who had lived in
harmony with the land for countless generations and held a deep connection to the giant sequoias. Early
settlers, drawn to the region, relied on the high country for water, timber, and relief from the summer
heat, while the valley floor sustained abundant wildlife and provided fertile soil for agriculture and
grazing. Over time, the county has experienced pivotal moments in its history, including the arrival of
the railroad, the mining of precious metals, and the development of irrigation canals, creating a shared
history that reflects the contributions of both its original inhabitants and those who later settled
here.
Success Lake & Richard L. Schafer Dam
Located about 8 miles east of Porterville, Success Lake is open year-round with 104 total camping and
RV sites, many with electric hookups and water. Success Lake also has 1,400 acres of multipurpose wild
land with recreation opportunities such as hunting, horseback riding, day hiking, backpacking and bird
watching. The lake is ideal for swimming, fishing, motorized and non-motorized boating, waterskiing and
jet skiing. Hunting is allowed in accordance with all state Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations

Pixley Wildlife Refuge
As home to more than a dozen species of mammals and reptiles, and habitat for waterfowl and grassland
bird species, this refuge is the perfect place to watch nature come alive. Take a relaxing walk along
the 1.5-mile trail, lined with interpretive stations, or observe the sandhill cranes roosting in the
wetlands from September to January, where more than 6,000 have been spotted at one time.
Lake Kaweah Reservoir
Lake Kaweah is located on the Kaweah River near Lemon Cove and Three Rivers. When full, the lake has a surface area of 3 square miles. It is in the foothills below Sequoia National Park and the Sierra Nevada range. High mountains provide a beautiful background for year-round fishing, boating and walking trails at this popular recreation area along the southern entrance into Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. In addition to the majestic Giant Sequoias, Tulare County offers rolling foothills adorned with mighty oak trees and a fertile valley floor bursting with life — a paradise for every nature lover.
Kaweah Oaks Preserve
This 322-acre preserve, off Highway 198 East of Visalia, protects one of the last valley oak riparian
forests in California. Visitors can enter a timeless oasis that showcases what this region looked like
more than 200 years ago when valley oaks carpeted the Central Valley. Hike a trail past Himalayan
blackberries and rare native plant species while being serenaded by dozens of local bird species and
other wildlife. Perhaps you’ll spot a gray fox, great horned owl or even a Nuttall’s
woodpecker. Four self-guided nature paths allow visitors to explore a simpler time, and experience the
sights and sounds that greeted Native Americans and early settlers.
Woodlake Botanical Gardens
The first garden of its kind in California, this 13-acre facility near Bravo Lake showcases our
region’s rich heritage of citrus, nut and rose cultivation. With more than a mile of gardens,
visitors can stroll, bike or use a wheelchair to explore. Visit during peak bloom in April and May to
enjoy intoxicating fragrances, and May through July for berries, nuts and fruits. Don’t miss the
citrus, exotic fruit and nut orchards, annual and perennial crops, rock and cactus garden. The botanical
gardens are open Thursday - Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free.
Dry Creek Preserve
The first example of an ecologically based aggregate mine reclamation in Tulare County, this fully
restored 152-acre nature preserve provides critical habitat for an increasing number of resident and
migratory birds and supports native species such as the great blue heron, the bald eagle and mule deer.
When spring arrives, the preserve welcomes visitors with a stunning display of wildflowers. Located just
outside of Lemon Cove a short distance off Highway 198, don’t miss a great opportunity to stretch
your legs and enjoy the scenery. Open daily from fall into spring, and only on weekends in summer.
Mooney Grove Park
As the first county park in California and home to enormous oak trees that Visalia has worked hard to
preserve and protect, Mooney Grove Park is the perfect place for a family picnic or game of disc golf.
Surround yourself with nature and enjoy walking around the grounds. At the park entrance, visit the
historic “End of the Trail” statue, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in September,
2019. Take a stroll around the lagoon and tour the Tulare County Museum, which features one of the
largest Native American basket collections on display.

This family-owned creamery in Tulare started in 2012 as a means of processing milk from their own
dairy. Tours are by reservation only, geared toward kids and adults, and run seasonally from early

the milk-bottling and ice cream-making process and have the chance to purchase the freshest milk and ice

Visitors Enjoy a Variety of Colors and Activities Along the Blossom Trail
BLOSSOM TRAIL
When you visit Tulare County in the springtime, you may notice the beautiful colors that spread across
the landscape. As people drive along the Orchard and Blossom Trail they might make a game of identifying
which trees are growing orange, plum, almond, peach, or apricots, or just get lost in the plentiful pink
and snowy white blossoms.
The journey starts as early as February, when visitors to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park can
enjoy the blooming orchards and groves that wind through the Sierra foothills. Whether taking scenic
routes like the 180, 216, or Yokohl Valley Road, or state routes such as the 99, 198, 65, 190, 63, and
245, visitors will be treated to breathtaking views of vibrant blossoms and the natural beauty of
California’s Central Valley.
“It’s a pretty phenomenal trail,” said Tricia Stever Blatter, executive director of
Tulare County Farm Bureau. “It creates a beautiful canopy for the valley. You generally
don’t see this density of rich colors unless the trees are packed in every direction like they are
here. The almonds and root trees are grown on similar root stock, but the color depends on what fruits
are grafted onto those roots, so you have quite a range of colors.”
The area is filled with fruit stands visitors can enjoy. Small farms, large dairies and farm-to-table
restaurants offer an imaginative variety of activities including farm tours, petting zoos or olive oil
tastings.
One example is Naylor Organic Farm and Stay, which offers opportunities for tourists to pick 30
varieties of fruit as well as stay overnight in an authentic setting.
“People come and pick their own fruit from our trees – all fruit is organically
grown,” said owner Nori Naylor. “A lot of families come and enjoy having time on the farm.
This is an opportunity for people to come and stay on a working farm because many people nowadays
haven’t had that opportunity. They can go from our location to the blossom trail. We’ve had
people from the bay area, Los Angeles, and out of state come to stay on the farm and see the
blossoms.”

Historic Sites
Explore Tulare County’s rich history through its museums, heritage parks, WWII aircraft and historic landmarks, uncovering the stories and legacies that shaped this vibrant region.
Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park
Founded in 1908 by Col. Allen Allensworth and a group of African Americans, Allensworth is the only
California State Park to be established, financed, and developed by African Americans. A modest but
growing assemblage of restored and reconstructed buildings symbolizing Allensworth’s dream of an
independent, democratic town where African Americans could live in control of their destinies can be
found near Earlimart. Every year the park hosts special events to celebrate its rich history.
Dinuba Heritage Square
Heritage Square in Dinuba houses two structures with cultural and historical artifacts of the Alta
District (northeast Tulare County). These structures include the White House, a 1912 family home, which
was later used to house teachers after World War II, and the Southern Pacific Railroad office, built in
1888 when the railroad was extended from Fresno to Visalia and used until 1978. 289 S K St, Dinuba.
Dinuba Korean Memorials
In celebration of Korea’s Independence, these two monuments were placed in Dinuba on April 12,
2008, and dedicated by the Central California Korean Historical Society. The monuments are located on
the corner of L Street and Fresno Street in Dinuba as well as Alta and “O” street.
Dinuba Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall
The Dinuba Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall was created to commemorate all who gave their lives during
the Vietnam conflict. The wall represents a small portion of all who died in defense of our beloved
country, the United States of America. The replica of the Vietnam Wall arrived in Dinuba on April 19,
2015. On April 30, 2015 the wall was dedicated, which marked the 40th anniversary of the end of the
Vietnam War. The wall is located in the Dinuba Veterans Memorial Building.
Farmersville Methodist Church
The chapel of the former Farmersville Methodist Church, which was built in the 1880s and pulled into
town on logs with horses around 1903, is now located at 881 N. Farmersville Blvd. Mrs. Avery donated a
parcel of her land back in 1947, which is now Avery and Ash, and over time the church has undergone
several moves, including one in 2009 where its steeple was rebuilt with fishtail shingles. It is now
open for private events.
Kaweah Post Office
A small post office located in the Kaweah settlement near Three Rivers is one of the smallest operating
post offices in the U.S. Established in 1910, it serves as a reminder of the utopian community
established by its colonist inhabitants. For more information about special events, such as the Old Time

Tailholt
Tailholt was once a thriving gold-mining camp 10 miles east of Delano and known as White River. Now all
that remains of this old camp are two cemeteries and a monument. It was established around 1865, with
the two cemeteries designed to ensure that respectable folk weren’t buried alongside camp

Tulare County WWII and Vietnam War Memorial
Located at Mefford Field in Tulare, the Tulare County WWII and Vietnam War Memorial honors the
residents of Tulare County who served in World War II as well as the 77 service members from Tulare
County who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. The WWII War Memorial features a B-17 Bomber, known as
the Flying Fortress. The aircraft at the memorial is also known as Preston's Pride after General Maurice
A. Preston, a Tulare resident and former commander of the 379th Bomb Group, who brought the aircraft to
Tulare in 1958. The Vietnam War Memorial, first unveiled in 1994 and renovated in 2022, features a 1964
F-4C Phantom II fighter-bomber, which was utilized by the United States Air Force until it was grounded
and used as a trainer airframe until 1986.

Zalud House
A nostalgic glimpse into the past, the Zalud House, built in 1891, is one of the few houses of that era
that has not been remodeled. From the time it was built in Porterville, only the Zalud family lived
there, and it’s now one of the few museums in the nation furnished entirely with the owner’s
possessions. Visitors can sign up for “paranormal” tours of the house, which is listed in
the National Historical Registry of Old Houses and the National Register of Historic Places.

Alta Historical Society
The Depot Museum in Dinuba tells the story of the Alta District’s beginnings, culture and
commerce. It was in operation by Southern Pacific railroad from 1888-1978 and opened as a museum in

Antique Farm Equipment Museum
Located in Tulare, this museum at the International Agri-Center pays tribute to past generations of
California farmers and dairymen, showing the tools and technology they used to create a garden from a
desert. Horse-drawn farm tools, fully restored antique tractors, steam driven harvesters, old-fashioned
milking machines, a collection of barbed wire and homemaker’s tools are displayed. There is even a

Center for Art, Culture, and History – Exeter (CACHE)
Formerly the Exeter Historical Museum, CACHE celebrates the art, culture, and history of
California’s heartland. Located in downtown Exeter, it offers quarterly art exhibitions, engaging

Porterville Historical Museum
Housed in the old Southern Pacific depot, the museum is an historic walk through time, containing some
of the region’s finest examples of Yokuts and other American Indian artifacts. The collection
includes items used by the first settlers to the region, with photos taken over the past 100 years.
Decorative arts and crafts include china, dolls and quilts. A large oil painting of a stagecoach by a
Porterville High School student dominates the main room.
The End of the Trail Statue
Sculpted by American-born artist James Earle Fraser, “The End of the Trail” statue has
endured to become one of the most recognizable images in the United States. The piece was first created
as a small bronze that won the John Wanamaker prize in 1898 at the American Artists Association
exhibition in Paris. The notoriety earned Fraser a commission to build a monumental plaster version of
the piece for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. After the exhibition,
it was moved to Visalia’s Mooney Grove, where it resided for decades. Significant damage from the
elements prompted its relocation in 1968 to Oklahoma City, Okla., where it was restored and placed on
display at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. The city of Visalia received this bronze
replica as a replacement.
Three Rivers Historical Museum
The Native American village is a permanent outdoor exhibit consisting of a summer home, winter home and
acorn granary on a raised platform. Built by Johnny Sartuche, his father Eddie and brother Gary in 2011,
the village is adjacent to historic bedrock mortars and pestles on the museum grounds. Inside, the
museum displays Yokuts Indian artifacts, including a cradle, musical instruments, cooking implements and
baskets.
Tulare County Museum (Certified Autism Center)
Nestled in the oak preserve at Mooney Grove Park in Visalia, the museum houses one of the largest
Native American basket collections on display in California, as well as artifacts from the
pioneer era, agricultural equipment and other treasures that tell the story of the county. The newest
addition is the Farm Labor and Agriculture Museum, which recognizes the contributions of the
county’s diverse cultural groups to the agriculture industry.
Tule River Historical Museum
This museum houses the Murphy House, the first residence to be built in Springville, along with early
farming, mining and logging equipment, photographs, diaries and early recordings. The Murphy House was
disassembled and stored for years until a site was found for the museum. It was then put back together
and furnished with authentic old-time furnishings. The Tule River Historical Society holds an open house
the first Sunday in December, and visitors are treated to old-time craft demonstrations such as weaving,
forging, Dutch oven cooking and guided tours. The museum is entered through the Rodeo Grounds south of
Springville.

Tulare Historical Museum

Beautifully crafted exhibits tell the story of Yokuts Indians, Tulare pioneers, Olympic champions,
renowned aviators, military heroes and other notables. The Military History Wing and Manuel Toledo
Military Collection feature one of the most comprehensive military collections in the Central Valley.
The Heritage Art Gallery showcases an array of rotating exhibits from local artists. The Tom Hennion
Archives Center is available for research. The museum gift shop offers items featuring Tulare and the
San Joaquin Valley.
Woodlake Valley Cultural Museum
Travel Woodlake’s history through exhibits, from the first settlement called Stringtown to
present day Woodlake. See a WWII parachute wedding dress and a concert roller organ box from the
1800’s. Through our exhibits you can learn about the 1912 printing press and a 1926 pageant that
10,000 people attended and so much more. Admission: under 5 years old are free, all others $2.00. Open

Exeter Mural
After the citrus freeze of 1990, Exeter’s downtown began to look more like a ghost town. Things
seemed to get worse when a historic downtown building, the Mixter Pharmacy, burned down in 1991. The
city decided to reinvent its downtown in 1996. Inspired by a small Canadian town that used murals to
promote tourism after the lumber industry pulled out, Exeter converted the burned-out lot into Mixter
Park and had a mural painted that pays homage to Exeter’s citrus industry. Today, downtown is
thriving. The 32 murals create an outdoor art gallery that displays Exeter’s pioneering
businesses, Native American heritage, and scenes of life gone by.
