As we reflect on recent years, it is evident that our collective efforts have been the cornerstone of our success. The Schaumburg Business Association has witnessed a sustained increase in membership, a testament to our thriving business environment. Events have been well attended and continue to spark collaboration among the members.

Looking forward, we find ourselves at the forefront of exciting new opportunities. Our growing business base and financial stability lay the groundwork for further development and prosperity. I extend my gratitude to our diverse membership, encompassing both new and longstanding members, for developing the Schaumburg Business Association into the robust cornerstone it has become for our business community. Attendees of our numerous programs and events over the past year have undoubtedly witnessed the vibrant atmosphere and strong camaraderie that defines our organization. SBA President Lisa Gilbert, having no idea we were having a difficult time, called to inform us of an Illinois grant opportunity. Stronger Together

Chamber alliance groups work to
forge connections that lift each other up

The Schaumburg Business Association (SBA) was built on our five pillars: Community, Resources, Relationships, Advocacy, and Economic Development. All of which aim to improve the quality of life and economic vitality of the Schaumburg area. Business is more than corporate growth, it’s the community of individuals which make up these businesses and are intertwined within their corporate social responsibility.

The Schaumburg Business Association is honored to be the platform that led to the creation of several alliance groups with a mission to support their people’s needs.

Networking has always been a necessary part of growing any company’s resources and revenue. But the act of networking is a social one, requiring skills and confidence in a crowded room. There are many professionals that thrive on that type of energy, but there are many others who experience something else entirely. Introversion has been a rising topic of conversation – particularly how introverts fit into the world and business landscapes.

Long time SBA member Jim Idstein saw the opportunity to support his fellow introverts and started the alliance group, Networking for Introverts.

“It is okay to be an introvert, there is nothing wrong with being one,” he said.

“Some of the best networkers are introverts. We just do it differently,” Jim said of the sentiment around creating the group. “There is a misconception that introverts can’t network. The group was formed to help each other understand why we behave the way we do and not overthink everything.”

Networking for Introverts has made a safe space for members to practice speeches or presentations ahead of time with familiar and supportive friends. They also bring in experts to present on topics related to them and their continued success. This alliance has been revolutionary for some of our tentative new members. It not only helps them learn new skills in networking, but also educates the SBA membership at large on how to recognize and engage an introvert. The group hopes to improve their members’ confidence above all else.

“Confidence is the most important thing for success,” Jim said. “You don’t have to meet everybody at an event. It is okay to set limits, like setting goals of meeting only three or four new people. Or to stay for a set amount of time. You don’t have to network like an extravert if it will not work for you.”

Jim noted that introverts tend to be low risk takers by nature, which is why creating this group under the Schaumburg Business Association umbrella was a natural choice. With the strength and support system existing within the SBA, joining this group becomes a comfortable, low-risk extension of an introvert’s membership, which in turn gives them the tools to flourish within the association and their careers.

There are countless groups that have flourished from within the SBA membership, like our ladies of the SBA Women’s Alliance Group (SWAG).

“SWAG was founded with a vision of creating a supportive, inspiring, and empowering community for women from diverse backgrounds,” said current Chair Gregg-Brook Koleno. “Recognizing the unique challenges women often face in various spheres of life, we sought to establish a platform where women could connect, share experiences, grow, and uplift one another.”

These powerhouse ladies know how to navigate all the terrain in business and life, but the continued support they provide to one another allows each to soar to new heights. They hope to see a future with women who positively influence themselves and those around them.

When asked about why the group felt the best way to achieve that goal was in the SBA, Gregg-Brook said that the decision was driven by the wealth of resources and support the SBA offers to its businesses and professionals within the association.

“By aligning ourselves with the SBA, we gain access to a network of like-minded individuals, valuable networking programs, and opportunities that can greatly benefit our members. The SBA’s commitment to promoting diversity and supporting women in business aligns seamlessly with our group’s mission, providing a solid foundation for our initiatives and ensuring the sustainability and success of our community.”

Gen Z is amongst the most diverse the workplace has ever seen. Largely attended Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) panels were one of the first major successes for the SBA Young Professionals (Yo-Pros). Diverse teams are more innovative, and our Yo-Pros recognized this years ago and have been sharing their insights and expertise on the topic ever since. The Yo-Pros have built their foundation on three pillars: Social, Development, and Service.

“We wanted to impact the development of our generation, as well as the Schaumburg community,” said Danilo Nevarez, one of the original leaders of the group. Danilo said that they started as a way to make room for the new talent to shine, as well as make connections with the business community to this misunderstood and illusive group.

“The main goal for our Yo-Pros is to create an environment where young professionals can meet and network on a personal and professional level,” said Kelly Petersen, the current Chair of the group.

When asked why the SBA?

“The SBA is one of the biggest and most well-organized chambers of commerce in the area.” Kelly said. It was only natural to build off that foundation.

There is also a strong connection between this group and our Non-Profit community, which is also strongly supported by our Non-Profit Alliance.

The SBA Non-Profit Alliance was created when longtime member, previous board member, and current ambassador Katie Berganske-Frank saw a need to further support these members in our organization. Non-Profits do so much for our communities. That is why it was important to create a system of resources and support to give in return.

The group is a space for non-profits to let their guard down and share best practices, tools, and challenges with a group who is uniquely qualified to understand. There was a previous perception that non-profits are vying for the same donations and resources and should see each other as competition. This group was set to break down those misconceptions and build a community in their place.

The number of resources for non-profit organizations to thrive is endless. The businesses and people within the Association have always kept corporate social responsibility at the forefront. The Non-Profit Alliance provides a focused channel for those looking to give back, the one-stop shop to do so ensuring our nonprofits have what they need to fulfill their missions. In the future, the group hopes to continue to expand and tackle new challenges in the modern world together.

The ever-changing world we live in also requires active guidance and collaboration to challenge the status quo and be accountable to be the positive change.

The SBA Diversity Alliance hopes to do just that. The group was founded with the mission to give a voice to all members of the SBA, celebrating the mosaic that is business in Schaumburg.

“The group was founded as a place to showcase success stories amongst our members, both as a celebration as well as an inspiration for minority business owners and professionals in the area,”said Co-Chair Chet Tambe. “SBA has always been one of the most progressive and forward-looking chambers of commerce.”

“The entire SBA team made sure that not only did this idea come to fruition, but also brought in a trifecta of co-chairs that includes myself; Brandon Cork, an impactful and energizing persona; and Vandana Walia, a meticulous planner and event organizer, who work together to augur the long-term success of the group,” he said. “Another notable team member was Sid Doshi, who did a lot of the heavy lifting around the events, making sure that all the loose ends were tied up and we stayed organized and on course. The SBA team and the SBA community at large supported the group by offering venues, sponsorships and most of all, enthusiastic participation to the year-round events.”

The leadership of the Schaumburg Business Association remains dedicated to incubating these types of alliance groups and identifying new segments of our membership to bring together to celebrate the individuals woven throughout our business community. We look forward to continuing to build a membership that is fully representative of all that makes Schaumburg great!

Description: Peer advisory group, meeting specifically to help one another with business items

We are a peer advisory group. Our objective is to be a place where members can bring problems or opportunities and get candid, objective feedback from fellow business leaders. Although members don’t have to carry the title of CEO, they do have to be the chief decision-maker for their organization and have bottom-line P&L responsibility. We are a non-compete group, so we don’t allow competitors of existing members to join, but apart from that, we are not looking for any particular industry representation.

Description: An ambitious and diverse group of young professionals connected by the Schaumburg Business Association with the purpose of creating relationships, enhancing professional skills, engaging civically. Meets: Third Friday of every month

Description: This group is dedicated to enriching the local non-profit community by cultivating long-lasting relationships and driving relevant resources for successful growth.

NETWORKING FOR INTROVERTS

Meets: First and Third Tuesday every month, 7:30-8:30 AM

Description: One study shows that up to 40% of people are introverts. Learn from each other and experts on how to grow your business and professional contacts with the goal of matching your strengths and interests to make networking enjoyable.

DIVERSITY ALLIANCE

Meets: Ehird Tuesday of every month, 4-6pm

Description: To provide minority entrepreneurs opportunities of connecting with fellow business owners, potential clients, mentors, and business contacts, all of whom will help take their business to the next level.

PROFESSIONAL NETWORKERS

Meets: Second & Fourth Tuesday of every month, 7:00-8:30 AM

Description: Professional Networkers is a group of motivated business professionals working together to help each other succeed and grow and provide exemplary service. We do this by referring our partners with new business leads. We are looking for small business owners and professionals serious about expanding their business by helping others grow.

We are an exclusive group, with only one business member per category. Professional Networkers is a group of business professionals, where business is passed and relationships are formed.

A Beacon of

Economic Vitality

90 North’s sweeping redevelopment a boon for whole community

There are big changes on the horizon for Schaumburg. None bigger than the reinvigoration of the space that formerly housed the Motorola Campus.

“The overall 90 North District area offers a major catalytic redevelopment opportunity for the Village of Schaumburg as well as the larger Chicago region,” said Village of Schaumburg Economic Development Director Matt Frank. “A highly desirable location, right next to major regional transportation corridors of I-90, I-290 and IL-53 and proximity to O’Hare International Airport are major assets of the District.”

“Regional and global anchors have already created a strong economic core at I-90 and Meacham Road at the heart of the 90 North District,” he continued. “Major anchors include the Zurich North America Headquarters, Boler Headquarters, Schaumburg Convention Center & Renaissance Hotel and Motorola Solutions Incorporated. Together, these anchors bring over 5,000 employees to the area every day as well as over 130,000 visitors annually just at the Convention Center.

“The 90 North District also complements the nearby Woodfield Regional Center, the largest commercial and retail hub in the Chicago region outside Downtown Chicago,” Frank added. “Additional investment in the 90 North District is anticipated with the construction of The District and Andretti Indoor Karting & Games starting in 2024.”

This is a huge infusion of life to the economic vitality of Schaumburg during both weekdays and weekends. This project calls for one of the most ambitious developments in the Chicagoland area, if not the nation. The 30-acre mixed-use development, to be known as The District at Veridian, stretches from Algonquin Road down to Progress Parkway, along Meacham Road. The estimated 10 acres of public parks, 270,00 square feet of retail space, 80,000 square feet of offices, and 570 residential units means this will be a huge benefit to all businesses and residents in the area.
