Established in 1973 by the Miller family, who have farmed these lands for five generations, this vineyard has recently opened its gates to the public for tastings and tours, inviting you to indulge and taste the fruits of what Food & Wine declared the “best vineyard in California” in 2021.

Dunes Center: Explore Nature and Cinematic Legacy

Santa Maria Valley is home to a stunning 18-mile dunes complex, the fourth largest in the world! But these aren’t just pretty landscapes; they’re teeming with unique wildlife, diverse ecosystems, and a dash of cinematic history that will leave you in awe.

The Dunes Center emerged from a passionate conservation effort to protect its natural beauty and advocate for its wildlife. Schedule a tour for an intimate experience that reveals the fascinating flora and fauna that call this sandy paradise home— think deer, raccoons, and an array of native birds.

For movie buffs, the Dunes Center offers a slice of Hollywood history with Cecil B. DeMille’s 1923 classic The Ten Commandments. DeMille’s larger-than-life Ancient Egyptian “City of the Pharaoh” was actually the Guadalupe dunes, filmed among the sandy terrain to mimic the Biblical desert. When filming concluded, DeMille had the set dismantled and buried in the dunes, which were unearthed decades-later and many props are now on display at the Dunes Center, such as the iconic giant terracotta sphinx head.

Luffa Farm: A Soft Spot for Gourd Enthusiasts

Nestled in the charming town of Nipomo, Luffa Farm is an opportunity for anyone curious about the quirky world of luffas. Soft, spongy and yes, washable, this unique farm is the only public place in the United States where you can witness firsthand how gourds grow.

The story of Luffa Farm begins in the early 1980s with a college student who received a packet of “mystery seeds” for a class project and, after a few weekends of neglect, she decided to give the garden some love. What she found was nothing short of a revelation: a rattling, brown gourd filled with seeds! From that moment on, she began her summer ritual of growing luffas, earning her the honorific title of “The Luffa Lady.”

Word spread like wildfire among Nipomo residents, who soon flocked to her door, eager to learn about luffas and partake in her sponge tours. Join the Luffa Farm and schedule a 30-minute journey on Wednesday through Sunday during the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. At the end of your tour, you’ll get hands-on with freshly harvested luffas and browse a charming gift shop stocked with herbal and bath products — all lovingly crafted right on the farm. Whether you’re a gardening novice or a seasoned pro, Luffa Farm promises an experience that’s equal parts educational and entertaining!

Fire Up The Grill:

Every Season is Barbecue Season

In Santa Maria Valley, barbecue isn’t just a meal —it’s a way of life. Our 150-year tradition of culinary excellence is what makes us the “Barbecue Capital of the World,” but during the month of May, National Barbecue Month, barbecue takes the cake.

The roots of Santa Maria Style barbecue date back to the mid-1800s, when large ranches occupied the hills of Santa Maria Valley. Local ranchers would host Spanish-style feasts each spring for their vaqueros, or cowboys, as well as family and friends — barbecuing meat over earthen pits filled with hot coals of red oak, which is indigenous to the valley. The meal would be served with a generous helping of pinquitos, small pink beans that are considered indigenous to Santa Maria Valley.

The traditional cuts of Santa Maria Style barbecue are top-block sirloin and tri-tip, a triangular bottom sirloin cut that originated in the Santa Maria Valley. The meat is lovingly rolled in a simple yet bold mixture of salt, pepper and garlic salt before being barbecued over coals of red oak, a native local oak species that contributes a smoky, hearty flavor.

A hallmark of Santa Maria Style barbecue is the live fire cooking method. Santa Maria Style barbecue features a live fire, generally in a metal box, still cooked with native red oak wood. The grill, typically housed in a metal box, is adjusted over the flames, creating a quick, high-heat cooking environment that locks in juices and achieves that perfect char.

For The Hitching Post of Casmalia, one of the premier restaurants to experience Santa Maria Style barbecue, their fire is kindled hours before opening and built up from hot coals from the previous night.

“No matter the cut, it is prepared the same way, a tradition that unites strangers alike. Santa Maria Style barbecue is far more than just a regional cooking method – it’s family legacies of giving, serving and love,” said Terri Stricklin of The Hitching Post.

To commemorate Barbecue Month, Santa Maria Valley hosts an annual festival where pitmasters compete for the title of Barbecue Champion, showcasing their skills in both professional and backyard categories. But the barbecue experience doesn’t end in May — local eateries serve up this flavorful fare all year long.

So whether you’re savoring a perfectly grilled tri-tip, or sharing stories around a crackling fire, you’re not just enjoying a meal; you’re embracing a time-honored tradition that celebrates the heart and soul of Santa Maria Valley. An Adventure Through Jax’s Eyes

Hi there, fellow adventurers! Jax here—your favorite dogfluencer, traveler, and all-around good boy. Today, I’m going to tell you why Santa Maria Valley should be next on your travel list — and yes, bring your favorite four-legged friend along for the ride! This hidden gem on California’s Central Coast is a dream for dogs (and their humans), with its blend of wide-open spaces, beautiful vineyards, and a whole lot of dog-friendly vibes. Trust me, I’ve sniffed around, and it’s pawsome!

Santa Maria Valley’s Natural Playground

Let me tell you, if there’s one thing we pups love, it’s wide-open spaces. Santa Maria Valley is full of trails, parks, and beaches where dogs can run, explore, and stretch those paws. Los Flores Ranch Park is a personal favorite of mine. Imagine acres upon acres of rolling hills to explore, with trails that wind through oak woodlands and grassy meadows. Some of the trails are even off-leash friendly, which means more freedom for us to roam around and discover new scents. And don’t worry, there’s plenty of shady spots for a rest when the zoomies wear off!

If you’re up for a beach day (because who isn’t?), you can take a short drive to Pismo Beach. The sand, the ocean breeze, the chance to chase a few seagulls — it’s basically dog heaven. Whether it’s a quick paddle in the waves or a long walk along the shore, we dogs love the feeling of salty wind in our fur.

Wine Tasting? Count Me In!

Santa Maria Valley is famous for its wine, and while us dogs aren’t into sipping Chardonnay (I mean, we prefer water bowls), a lot of the local wineries are super dog-friendly! Take Cambria Estate Vineyard & Winery or Cottonwood Canyon Vineyard & Winery, for example. They have spacious patios where you can hang out while your human enjoys a glass (or two) of that cool, coastal Pinot Noir.

Pro tip: some wineries even offer dog treats or water bowls, so we never feel left out. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to make new dog friends while our humans bond over wine. You won’t have to worry about us; we’ll be busy chasing butterflies or napping under the table while you savor every sip.

Dog-Friendly Eateries

What’s a vacation without good food? Luckily, many restaurants and cafes in Santa Maria Valley have outdoor seating, where we dogs are not just tolerated, but welcomed with wagging tails. Stop by Maya Mexican Restaurant, where dogs are treated like VIP guests. The patio is spacious, and your human can even order some dog-friendly snacks. Another great spot is The Garden Mediterranean Restaurant & Cafe—the perfect place to grab a bite after a long day of adventuring. I love to settle in and watch the world go by while my human enjoys some tasty local bites.

The People Here Really Get Us

One thing I’ve noticed is how dog-friendly the locals are. Santa Maria Valley feels like a community that truly loves dogs. People stop to give you belly rubs, staff at the wineries and restaurants greet you with water bowls, and even hotels make sure your stay is comfortable with dog beds and treats on arrival. They make sure we pups are just as pampered as our humans, and that’s a big deal when you’re exploring all day.

Why Your Dog Deserves the Trip

Now, I get it — planning a trip around your dog might seem like extra work. But trust me, us dogs make the best travel companions. We’re always excited, always ready for the next adventure, and we’re great at living in the moment (something humans can definitely learn from us). Santa Maria Valley is the perfect place to bring us along because it’s a destination that caters to both humans and pups alike. Plus, you won’t have to worry about leaving us behind or finding a sitter — we’re happiest when we’re with you, exploring new places and making memories.

Pacific Conservatory Theatre (PCPA)

PCPA is where Shakespeare and Broadway fans can enjoy everything from live performances of classical plays to upbeat musical productions. The theater consists of two main venues and an outdoor festival theater, allowing for year-round entertainment.

Santa Maria Civic Theatre

The Santa Maria Civic Theatre is the area’s longest continuously running community theater. The nonprofit company has shown more than 200 productions for more than 85,000 people since its inception in 1959. The theater comfortably seats 100 people who can enjoy three staging configurations and outstanding acoustics. A summer fairytale series has entertained children and families since 1993.

The Great American Melodrama & Vaudeville Revue

The Great American Melodrama & Vaudeville Revue offers a nostalgic, interactive cabaret experience. The venue’s rustic charm and audience engagement will leave you cheering, booing, howling, and laughing in true melodramatic fashion. The Santa Maria Valley is a hidden treasure in California’s wine region. Boasting over 7,500 acres of vineyards and more than 30 wineries and tasting rooms, there’s plenty to explore. Whether you prefer our signature cool-climate Pinot or a robust Syrah, we have options for every wine enthusiast. The best way to savor the Central Coast’s inaugural American Viticulture Area (AVA) is by taking the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail. This scenic route extends 30 miles down to Los Olivos and features 14 award-winning wineries. NextGen CEO

NextGen CEO is a six-week business education course taught at a sixth-grade level that teaches kids the basics of starting their own business and what it takes to “be their own boss.” Run in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of the Mid Central Coast, this program inspires students to explore their passions and transform them into viable business ideas. With a focus on fun and interactive learning, participants gain essential entrepreneurial skills and, by the end of the course, have the chance to launch and run their own businesses.

NextGen CEO alumni who continue their business after the NextGen CEO program can join our NextGen CEO Alumni Network. This network provides resources on how to successfully continue their business endeavors after the NextGen CEO program, and local opportunities to sell their products to the public, fostering and developing the business landscape among young entrepreneurs. Leadership Santa Maria Valley

Leadership Santa Maria Valley is an 11-month program designed to foster and create future community leaders. The program allows participants to increase their understanding of local issues, challenges and solutions while expanding their personal and professional networks and refining their leadership skills. Each class gives back to the community with their own unique Legacy Project. The unique mix of monthly day-long seminars and small class atmosphere give participants an unprecedented opportunity to learn about the issues facing their community and to engage with civic leaders.

Founded in 1995, Leadership Santa Maria Valley has over 400 graduates serving on boards of local organizations and in a variety of leadership roles within government, service, nonprofit and business sectors today. Teacher Tours

The Chamber has partnered with the Santa Barbara County Career Technical Education (CTE) Programs to connect teachers to local industry through Teacher Tours. These tours provide teachers an opportunity to tour local businesses and speak with industry leaders about local workforce challenges and needs, so they can bring this information back to the classroom and implement it into their curriculum.

Teacher tours are day-long, career pathway-specific tours that provide CTE teachers the opportunity to connect with local businesses and better understand local workforce needs, so they can bring that information back to the classroom and best prepare students for jobs in our Santa Maria Valley community. Build Your Workforce

Managed by the Santa Maria Valley Chamber and the Santa Barbara County Workforce Development Board, the Build Your Workforce program connects businesses to funding & additional assistance available for hiring, upskilling and providing work experience.

The program includes various resources for business owners, such as hiring full time employees including covering 50% of wages for new employees, partial funding available for training, upskilling and promoting existing workforce, and providing temporary employment and paid work experience, including 100% of wages covered for paid work experience and internship programs. The Santa Maria Valley Chamber Hispanic Business Group’s mission is to provide the Hispanic business community with resources and networking opportunities and provide assistance in the area of Hispanic Youth education.
