Message from the CEO

The theme of the last couple of years seems to be uncertainty. Many traditional indicators indicate that our economy is doing well, but there are just enough warning signs to make decision making about business investments and future planning feel unpredictable. Will dysfunction in our government institutions affect the confidence of consumers – or the ability of financial markets to work? Will the housing challenges make it harder to recruit and retain talent? Will legislators continue to change the rules governing the employer-employee relationship in ways that increase costs beyond productivity gains?

In spite of increasing uncertainty, we believe there are a few factors that haven’t changed and won’t going forward. One of the most fundamental of these is that businesses need talented people in order to deliver for their customers. Finding ways to ensure that businesses can find the people they need now – and that there is a pipeline bringing forward talented individuals in the future – is a key priority for the Chamber.

Another consistent truth is that we are more effective in addressing the needs of our businesses and our community when we build partnerships and engage stakeholders in collectively solving challenges. Two of the Chamber’s Guiding Principles speak to this point. Specifically, they commit us to regional collaboration and to connecting our members to new partners, among other resources.

Open Spaces

Unique Traditions

The Santa Maria Valley offers visitors an exciting array of unique options to fill their stay and can not be found elsewhere in the region. From our vineyards and dining, to unconstrained nature such as beaches and hiking, to shopping and the arts, Santa Maria Valley is unlike any other destination. A perfect location for a combination of day trips, Santa Maria Valley offers something for every visitor.

Two exciting traditions special to Santa Maria Valley are our year-round car culture and award-winning rodeo weekend. If you like high-adrenaline entertainment and a camaraderie born of tradition and fandom, you will love our Cruisin’ Nationals and Santa Maria Elks Rodeo. Whether you like to watch people steer cool cars or wrestle steers, Santa Maria Valley has options for you.

Cruisin’ Nationals

Each Memorial Day Weekend, Santa Maria Valley hosts the largest Kustom car show in California, Cruisin’ Nationals. The term “Kustom” refers to cars beginning in the 1920s that have been modified using styles of that time. Car’s bodies are “chopped” and “channeled” to customize them to match their owner’s vision. Cars may be altered significantly, extensively changing their appearance, changing pillars or windows, and even sectioning the entire body.

The weekend is more than an event for car enthusiasts. All visitors feel transported back to another era. Cruisin’ Nationals is hosted by West Coast Kustom Car Club, which has hosted the show for more than 40 years. Each year, more than 800 car owners and fans gather to indulge themselves in this environment.

The weekend starts with the West Coast Kustoms Hall of Fame Dinner, followed by Santa Maria Cruise Night. Filtering in around all the car excitement is live music, vendors, a model car show, and roller-skating for families during the course of the weekend.

Attendees come from all over the world, from locals to visitors from as far away as Japan and Australia. The event has seen high-profile attendees, including rock stars such as ZZ Top frontman Billy Gibbons, Jimmy Vaughan, former guitarist for the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Brian Setzer, leader of rockabilly band Stray Cats. Celebrity cars like the Batmobile of the Munster Koach also have been spotted.

Santa Maria Elks Rodeo

There may be nothing more unique than a Santa Maria Valley rodeo – taking visitors back to the region’s roots of cowboys and cattle. The Santa Maria Elks Rodeo is an experience no visitor should miss. This weekend event held in late spring or early summer is a community tradition that draws a wide range of visitors. This multi-day event has activities for all ages, making it an exciting destination for the entire family.

“It’s been such a mainstay of our community that everyone comes out to support it,” said Tina Tonascia, Chief Operations Officer at Elks Recreation.

The rodeo is PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) sanctioned. Events feature bull riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, bareback riding, and team roping. The WPRA (Women’s Professional Rodeo Association) adds barrel racing and breakaway roping to the mix. Kids get in on the action, too, with events such as junior breakaway roping, team roping and mutton bustin’, a rodeo event where kids ride sheep.

Visitors also browse a midway area where they shop at different vendors and try different food merchants.

In addition to the traditional rodeo activities, other entertainers join the show. The rodeo kicks off with a skydiver swooping in with the American Flag. Between rodeo events and entertainers such as trick rider Madison MacDonald take the field. The rodeo also has its own rodeo barrel man, Matt Merritt, a clown who does different acts between events.

Every night after the rodeo activities, people gather for western dances with live bands, so the festivities go into the late hours. Santa Maria Valley is famous for our friendliness and sense of community so visitors are welcomed like family.

The Santa Maria Elks Rodeo has raised more than $15 million for the local community since its inception 80 years ago through programs such as its Annual Queen Contest and Circle of Champions. The Circle of Champions event is an annual fundraiser to support children and their families during their journey with cancer. The program has since gone national, with several other rodeos now holding similar events.

Saturday, a parade marches down Broadway with more than 100 participants. Participants include musical performances, horses, vintage cars, and creative floats.

Savoring the Tradition

Santa Maria Style Barbecue Evolves With Each Generation

In Santa Maria Valley, the scent of barbecue in the air is not just a sensory delight -

It is a symbol of a 150-year culinary tradition deeply interwoven into the community’s fabric. The region’s famous barbecue reflects its history of agriculture and welcomes visitors like family.

While the Santa Maria Style Barbecue has been a mainstay of the community, each generation adds its own new twists and passions that make return visits to Santa Maria Valley an exciting excursion.

Among the keepers of this flavorful heritage are Martin and Debi Testa, owners of Testa Catering.

“Barbecue is family. It’s a great way to gather and bring people together,” said Martin Testa.

Relative to other styles of outdoor cooking, Santa Maria Style Barbecue is unique. Its origins date back to the mid-1800s when ranchers in Santa Maria Valley hosted feasts each spring for their vaqueros, or cowboys. The meat was and continues to be prepared over native red oak wood coals in large open pits. The Style has evolved to include the distinctive Santa Maria Style Barbecue grill with a height-adjustable grate that gives the pitmaster total control and flexibility to achieve the perfect live-fire cook.

The classic Santa Maria Style Barbecue meal includes beef — most often either tri-tip, top sirloin or ribeye — served with locally grown pinquito beans, salsa, a simple green salad, macaroni salad and garlic bread dipped in butter.

Debi Testa said the area’s younger generation is as passionate about the Santa Maria Style Barbecue as those who came before them.

Barbecue is in the Testa bloodline just as it is for so many local families. Not only are styles and techniques passed from one generation to another, so are the barbecue pits themselves. Martin Testa’s grandfather passed along his pit to Martin when he was 15 and Martin has since passed it along to his youngest son.

While the Testas’ catering menu is not limited to Santa Maria Style Barbecue, it is their most popular cuisine. As more people choose the Central Coast for destination weddings, the gospel of Santa Maria Style Barbecue is spreading. As much as the experience is about food, guests also gravitate toward the unique communal aspect of Santa Maria Style Barbecue, something the Testas say will go on for generations to come.

“It’s the gathering place,” Martin said. “The future for the tradition is very bright.”

Of course, each pitmaster has his or her own style – the evolution from one generation to the next – making the options plentiful. So, hungry visitors to Santa Maria Valley can savor this unique draw to the region at any of our many restaurants serving Santa Maria Style Barbecue.

Art, Nature and History Beckon Visitors

The beauty of unconstrained nature awaits visitors to Santa Maria Valley. The region is filled with magnificent walkable vineyards, shape-shifting dunes, rolling hills for cycling and Oso Flaco Lake for bird watching. Nature calls to those who listen and Santa Maria Valley is a naturalist’s paradise, all within a short drive and well within budget.

The Santa Maria Valley also boasts a fine taste for the arts and visitors discover the genuine culture of the Valley and people through our art. This combination of nature and art make Santa Maria Valley a must stop on any vacation agenda.

Visitors to Santa Maria Valley benefit from the stewardship and encouragement of visionaries who preserve and highlight the area’s unique natural, historical and artistic resources and talents. Driving through the environs gives intrepid tourists the ability to enjoy the natural Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center, experience the historical DANA Adobe and Cultural Center and explore the artistic landscape of Santa Maria Valley’s public murals and sculptures.

NATURE

Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes and Center

A short drive away lies the largest intact coastal dune ecosystem on the planet, the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes, an 18-mile coastal preserve of protected wildlife and natural landscape. Kathleen Goddard-Jones used to visit the dunes with her family in the 1960s. She was a conservationist for the Sierra Club and an accomplished High Sierra hiker. Goddard-Jones, now known as “the mother of the dunes,” fought to establish the sanctuary and wildlife preserve after learning dune land had been acquired for a nuclear power plant.

Goddard-Jones also helped found the nearby Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center. The center educates visitors on what goes into conserving the dunes ecosystem and tells the long history of the dunes. Starting with the Chumash people who lived at the dunes 10,000 years ago, the story includes early Eastern European settlers. Film buffs may also be aware the dunes were the filming location of the original silent version of “The Ten Commandments,” Cecil B. DeMille’s film from 1923.

There are five miles of beach in Oceano used for recreation, including four-wheel vehicles (which are prohibited elsewhere on the protected land). Visitors to the area can enjoy rare animals while exploring microhabitats and investigating archeological remnants. The center offers hikes and walks for private groups and school groups, as well as field trips on which visitors can learn about the ecosystem in more depth. There also is an annual walk-through of the dunes in homage to founder Goddard-Jones.

HISTORY

The DANA Adobe and Cultural Center

The Santa Maria Valley has a storied history and visitors benefit from preservation-minded residents who have preserved some of the man-made environment, allowing people to experience history with all their senses. The DANA Adobe and Cultural Center is home of the original “Casa de Dana,” which is one of the oldest houses in San Luis Obispo County (just north of Santa Maria Valley). The original owner, Sea Captain William Goodwin Dana, lived there with his wife, Maria Josefa Carillo Dana, and their 13 children. The cultural center in Nipomo sits on a 130-acre property, known as the “Rancho.”

Today, visitors can learn first-hand what life was like in the early 1800s when the house was built. Children and families can take guided hikes, sketch the more than 200-year-old sycamore tree on the premises, learn about local wildlife and ecology, prepare hand-made tortillas, try their hand at roping while riding a wine-barrel pony, or take part in traditional dances.

There also is a system of trails for hikers to explore on their own. The Heritage Trail follows along the same path as the landmark El Camino Real, or “The Royal Road,” a 600-mile trail that connected 21 Spanish missions across the state. The Danas were famous for their hospitality to travelers who stopped there on their journey. The Railroad Trail follows along where the Pacific Coast Railway, which ran from Port San Luis to Los Olivos, used to run. Visitors also can walk along the Nipomo Creek and see what birds they can spot.

PUBLIC ARTS

Once back from the beauty of the surrounding natural and historical attractions, visitors are treated to one of the unique aspects of Santa Maria Valley – the murals and sculptures found throughout the city. They bring an artistic sensibility to the streets and encode the town’s history and culture in a way appreciated both emotionally and intellectually. Visitors can enjoy the artwork casually as they go about town or follow their curiosity down a rabbit hole that will let them vicariously experience the values, experience and inspiration that has shaped the essence of Santa Maria Valley through the years. It allows visitors and residents alike to go beyond the present day façade of the city and dig deeper into the vision that drives artists and community members alike.

“It’s been a great year for public art in Santa Maria Valley,” said Dennis Smitherman of the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department, who oversees the city’s public art. “We’ve added additional murals and sculptures around the Valley. We recently received an allocation for more public art, and that was decided by the city council, so we’ll be seeing even more of an increase in the next two-year cycle.”

Murals have been going up across the city since the council approved the Public Art Master Plan in 2019. The city added three murals last year.

“Past, Present, and Future of Santa Maria” is a 512-square-foot mural depicting the past, present and future of Santa Maria Valley. Kim Cochran and Jonathan Smith of The Environment Makers painted the mural with the help of local teens.

Elks Baseball Field hosts a mural from local artist Aaron Cribbs and represents the history of baseball in Santa Maria Valley. Cribbs also painted a large, bright, colorful graphic mural that is located in Machado Plaza. Also in Machado Plaza is a new kinetic sculpture purchased by Leopold Gallery.

“Public art reflects the culture and environment that is all around this beautiful area,” Smitherman said. “It creates a more vibrant city and tells a story about the residents and community in California’s Central Coast. In addition to being great for the city, it’s good for tourism and the visitors can tell a lot about what Santa Maria Valley is and who we are by looking at the art.”

Upcoming projects include a plan to paint 15 new utility art boxes, where local artists paint the boxes that control traffic lights, and continuing to work with local artists to add sculptures and murals to the city.

Sip, Savor & explore

Dewlson Family Farm

You’ve probably noticed, especially if you’re a coffee lover, that some of the best coffee beans hail from far-flung countries like Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, and Ethiopia. But what you probably don’t know is that we’ve got a hidden gem right here on the California Central Coast for all you java connoisseurs, adventure seekers, and families looking for a unique experience: Dewlson Family Farm!

Before we learn about the farm, its crops, and the one-of-a-kind tours they offer, let’s dive into how Dewlson Family Farm came to be.

Dewlson Family Farm’s History

After retiring from long careers in the U.S. Navy, Judy Paulson and Ron Dewey decided to embark on an entirely new adventure: They opened a farm right here in the heart of Santa Maria Valley in 2010, with its namesake being a combination of the co-owners’ last names. And, boy, is growing coffee in the coast’s windy and sometime freezing conditions quite the challenge.

“Coffee is not normally grown here, so we’ve created an artificial environment,” Paulson explained during a tour through the greenhouses that shield five varieties of Arabica coffee. Thankfully, to their great delight, tea is quite happy with the weather conditions.

But this isn’t just a farm. This is a legacy.

When Judy and Ron dreamed up the farm, they envisioned something they could pass down through generations. (You can see their progress in the family photos proudly displayed in the tasting room.) Their children are second-generation farmers with little ones of their own. While they lead busy lives—either following the tradition of serving in the Navy or working in healthcare—they all share a deep commitment to the farm and its daily operations.

Healthy Harvests & Labors of Love

Judy and Ron put their hearts into making their dream a reality and sharing both their story and their goods with the public. They are pesticide-free and maintain sustainability with solar panels, owl boxes, hawk perches, and other environmentally conscious resources, all to ensure that their family and visitors can savor their offerings with confidence.

As mentioned, Dewlson Family Farm grows its own coffee. Five varieties of Arabica coffees are grown here, including Geisha, one of the most expensive and most difficult types to produce. Three varieties of tea from renowned regions of China are also grown on the farm.

But their primary commercial crop? Lisbon lemons, which are native to Portugal (hence the name). This lemon stands out with its unmistakable elongated shape, often resembling a gentle curve. The Lisbon Lemon tree boasts glossy, vibrant green leaves and delicate white flowers that transform into delicious citrus fruit after about nine months. At Dewlson Family Farm, there are approximately 6,000 trees spread over 40 acres.

There is a wide variety of exotic plants at Dewlson Family Farm for you to pick and take home, from caviar limes, Buddha hand fruit, and ice cream bananas to passion fruit, dragon fruit, and goji berries. Guadalupe Social Club

One of the newest entertainment establishments is Guadalupe Social Club, which opened in February on the dunes side of Highway One. It consists of a wine bar, an event space and a half-acre out back with games such as bocce, cornhole and Jenga, alongside outdoor seating.

“We wanted to open a space that was family-friendly, where you could enjoy wine without making reservations,” said Brooks Van Wingerden, who owns the spot with Lexie Bell. “You can let your kids play and have fun while you enjoy high-quality wine and food.”

Wine enthusiasts and their families can enjoy a wide range of activities, including winemaker nights, floral arrangement classes, a makeup class, a beer festival, a grape stomp, a cornhole tournament, wine education classes, a makers market, comedy nights and trivia. The event space includes concerts with local bands, as well as DJ nights. There are even photo sessions and festive activities during the holiday season.

The Great American Melodrama & Vaudeville Revue

The Great American Melodrama & Vaudeville Revue delivers old school, interactive cabaret style performances. The floors are covered with sawdust and the audience is encouraged to join in on the show by cheering, booing, howling and laughing along with the action in the classic melodramatic style.

Pacific Conservatory Theatre (PCPA)

PCPA is where Shakespeare and Broadway fans can enjoy everything from live performances of classical plays to upbeat musical productions. The theater consists of two main venues and an outdoor festival theater, allowing for year-round entertainment.

Santa Maria Civic Theatre

The Santa Maria Civic Theatre is the area’s longest continuously running community theater. The nonprofit company has shown more than 200 productions for more than 85,000 people since its inception in 1959.
