Winnebago County

●  Rockford: As the largest city in the region and the county seat, Rockford is home to approximately 149,900 residents. Known as the “Forest City” for its tree-lined neighborhoods and abundant green space, Rockford blends industry, arts, outdoor recreation, and history. It was also home to the legendary Rockford Peaches of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League from 1943 to 1954.

●  Loves Park: With more than 23,000 residents, Loves Park lives up to its name through expansive park systems and outdoor recreation, including nearby Rock Cut State Park.

●  Machesney Park: Home to approximately 22,950 residents, Machesney Park offers a family-focused atmosphere, neighborhood parks, and strong retail corridors.

●  Cherry Valley: With about 3,200 residents, Cherry Valley is home to CherryVale Mall, one of the first enclosed malls in Illinois, and Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Rockford, a regional destination for summer fun.

●  Winnebago: Located near the beloved Severson Dells Nature Center, Winnebago, often called “‘Bago,” is home to roughly 3,100 residents and offers small-town charm with easy access to natural beauty.

●  Pecatonica: Nestled in western Winnebago County, Pecatonica features a historic downtown and proudly hosts the annual Winnebago County Fair, a highlight for its 2,200 residents and visitors alike.

●  South Beloit: Located along the Wisconsin border and home to approximately 8,000 residents, South Beloit offers scenic Rock River views and convenient interstate access.

●  Durand: Small but mighty, Durand pairs historic character with a vibrant downtown district, serving its approximately 1,500 residents with strong community pride.

●  Rockton: Home to nearly 7,700 residents, Rockton features a charming downtown, complete with a walk-up ice cream shop, and hosts Old Settlers Days, the largest music festival in the state-line area.

●  Roscoe: With around 11,000 residents, Roscoe is known for its welcoming neighborhoods, Hononegah Forest Preserve, and The Ledges Golf Course.

Boone County

●  Belvidere: As the Boone County seat, Belvidere is home to approximately 25,300 residents. Known as the “City of Murals,” it showcases public art throughout downtown and hosts one of Illinois’ largest county fairs.

●  Poplar Grove: With about 5,000 residents, Poplar Grove is home to the Vintage Wings & Wheels Museum, celebrating aviation and automotive history, as well as Edwards Apple Orchard, a fourth-generation, 100-acre family farm known for crisp apples, cider donuts, and freshly pressed apple cider.

●  Capron: This village of roughly 1,400 residents offers a close-knit community atmosphere.

●  Caledonia: With around 200 residents, Caledonia embraces rural character and is home to Farmers Rising, an organization dedicated to local and regenerative farming.

Each of these communities adds dimension to the Rockford Region’s identity. Together, they create a place where opportunity, character, and quality of life intersect.

Building Brighter Futures

If you’re looking for a community that believes in its students and invests in their success, you’ve found the right place. The Rockford Region offers a wide range of educational options – from top-rated public schools to skilled trades training to higher education – helping every student discover their path and thrive.

At the heart of our region’s educational community is Rockford Public Schools (RPS 205), one of the largest districts in Illinois. RPS 205 is home to innovative programs, world-class facilities, and teachers passionate about preparing students for what comes next. From nationally recognized Fine Arts programs to robust College and Career Academies, students graduate ready for college, a trade, or the workforce.

When it comes to making college a reality, Rockford Promise is leading the way – and the results speak for themselves. This transformative scholarship program offers eligible RPS 205 and Boylan full tuition to partner colleges and universities. The Class of 2025 alone saw 203 local graduates awarded scholarships. As of the fall of 2025, Rockford Promise has 570 students actively enrolled in college across four partner institutions: Rockford University, Rock Valley College, Northern Illinois University, and OSF Saint Anthony College of Nursing. The outcomes are remarkable: Rockford Promise scholars at Rockford University boast a 92% graduation rate, and approximately 70% of all scholars are first-generation college students. Since the program’s founding in 2016, 159 students have graduated as Rockford Promise alumni. A partnership with Rockford University and the City of Rockford – backed by $500,000 annually in casino tax revenue from Hard Rock Casino Rockford – has further expanded access for students from partner schools within city limits. Rockford Promise is a shining example of how this community rallies around its students and helps them dream big.

Beyond RPS 205, the Rockford Region is home to other excellent public districts, including Harlem and Hononegah, as well as private schools offering personalized and faith-based learning environments, such as Boylan Catholic High School, Rockford Lutheran, Rockford Christian, and Keith Country Day School.

For students drawn to the trades, the Rockford Region is the place to be – and the numbers back it up. Governor Pritzker recently highlighted Rockford as fourth in Illinois for growth and earnings in the trades, and interest among young people has never been higher. Project First Rate, a partnership between union contractors and tradespeople – and a newly named U.S. Department of Labor National Apprenticeship Ambassador – connects aspiring tradespeople with tuition-free apprenticeship programs across more than 17 skilled careers, from carpentry and electrical to pipefitting and machining. Their annual Building Trades Career Expo draws hundreds of students from across the region each year. Apprentices earn a living wage from day one, graduate debt-free, and research shows they out-earn their peers by $300,000 over a lifetime. In the Rockford Region, the trades aren’t just a job – they’re a gateway to a fulfilling future.

Innovation in technical and career education is thriving across the region. RPS 205 recently opened The Quad, a dedicated College & Career Education Center that serves students from all district high schools – hosting college fairs, career pathway programs, and hands-on learning experiences all under one roof. Complementing that is Rock Valley College’s 77,000-square-foot Advanced Technology Center (ATC), a state-of-the-art facility offering credit and non-credit training in manufacturing, engineering, and other high-growth fields. Together, these two facilities represent the region’s serious investment in preparing students for whatever comes next.

For traditional higher education, Rockford offers an impressive range of institutions close to home. Rock Valley College, Rockford University, Rockford Career College, Rasmussen University, OSF Saint Anthony College of Nursing, and the University of Illinois College of Medicine all provide accessible, impactful options spanning healthcare, business, technology, nursing, and beyond. Strong partnerships between schools and local businesses add real-world experience that strengthens our entire regional workforce.

Healthcare in the Rockford Region

Rockford is home to three major health systems

Mercyhealth, OSF HealthCare, and UW Health. Each is award-winning and continues to grow, invest, and innovate on behalf of the community. Recent highlights include:

Mercyhealth’s Javon Bea Hospital and Physician Clinic–Riverside

In January 2019, Mercyhealth unveiled this $505 million, 563,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility - the largest construction project in Rockford’s history. More recently, Mercyhealth unveiled a new Cancer Institute offering enhanced treatment areas, advanced technology, and patient-centered design. Mercyhealth continues to expand its regional footprint as well: the health system announced a partnership with Freeport-based FHN, committing $100 million over five years to expand services into Stephenson, Ogle, Jo Daviess, and Carroll counties.

OSF HealthCare’s Innovation Leadership

OSF HealthCare has long been a national model for healthcare innovation through OSF Innovation, its dedicated initiative for transforming care delivery. For the second time, OSF HealthCare has been named one of America’s Most Innovative Companies by Fortune for 2025, having first received the distinction in 2023. On the digital health front, OSF OnCall expanded its digital hospital program to the Rockford area, bringing virtual care and 24/7 access closer to home. OSF HealthCare has also earned the 2025 CHIME Digital Health Most Wired recognition – the fourteenth consecutive year it has achieved this honor.

UW Health’s Comprehensive Care Network

UW Health’s Northern Illinois region includes two hospitals, a freestanding outpatient cancer center, 30 clinics, a home health agency, and a foundation. Its Women and Children’s Hospital – completed in 2021 – continues to serve families across northern Illinois with a birthing center, Level III NICU, and a range of pediatric specialties. Most recently, UW Health SwedishAmerican opened a second outpatient pharmacy, expanding patient access to medications and vaccinations.

These developments reflect Rockford’s ongoing commitment to advancing healthcare through substantial investment in infrastructure, innovation, and access.

Mental health services are a cornerstone of the community’s commitment to holistic well-being. Rosecrance, a nationally recognized leader in behavioral health, provides exceptional care for individuals and families navigating mental health and substance use challenges. Their programs span prevention, intervention, and recovery – and the organization continues to evolve with community needs. Rosecrance expanded its Griffin Williamson Campus to serve adults, responding to unprecedented demand for behavioral health services, and celebrated 77,336 individuals empowered to find lasting recovery during fiscal year 2025.

At the heart of community health in Rockford is Crusader Community Health, a trusted name in accessible and affordable care. With multiple locations throughout the area, Crusader offers primary and preventive healthcare to all, regardless of income or insurance status. Their patient-centered approach ensures that every individual receives personalized care tailored to their unique needs.

Beyond these pillars, Rockford is home to a network of specialists, urgent care centers, and state-of-the-art hospitals that provide comprehensive services, from pediatrics to geriatrics. The region also prioritizes public health, with numerous programs promoting wellness and prevention.

Whether you’re an outdoor adventurer, an arts enthusiast, or a fan of live sports, the Rockford Region offers something for everyone.

Outdoor enthusiasts will love the award-winning Rockford Park District, recognized as one of the best park systems in the nation. With more than 180 parks, extensive trails, and top-tier recreational facilities, there is no shortage of ways to stay active. Golfers can tee off at Aldeen Golf Club, a nationally ranked public course.

Rock Cut State Park in Machesney Park and Loves Park offers 3,000 acres of hiking, fishing, and kayaking. The Anderson Japanese Gardens, recognized as one of the finest Japanese gardens in North America, is a peaceful spot for reflection and relaxation. Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Garden is a 155-acre living museum filled with rare trees and spectacular gardens, offering something beautiful in every season. Water recreation is always close at hand as well, from paddling one of our four rivers to hitting the water at West Rock Wake Park, a one-of-a-kind cable wakeboarding experience at Levings Lake. Cheer on the SkiBroncs or test your own limits competing in the IRONMAN 70.3 – the Rockford Region delivers year-round for outdoor enthusiasts.

The region’s arts and culture scene is equally vibrant. The Rockford Art Museum showcases regional and national exhibitions, while the Coronado Performing Arts Center – an architectural gem in downtown Rockford -- hosts concerts, Broadway productions, and more. The summer brings live outdoor music to the region. From Thursday Night Dinner on Dock at Prairie Street Brewing Company to Sunday evening Live at Levings and Domingo de Parque, there’s a performance for everyone almost every night of the week.

History lovers will want to visit the Burpee Museum of Natural History, home to Jane, one of the most complete juvenile T. rex skeletons ever discovered. Families will find the Discovery Center Museum consistently ranks among the top children’s museums in the country.

Sports fans have plenty to cheer for throughout the year. Catch the Rockford IceHogs, an AHL affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks, at the BMO Center. Baseball fans can take in a Rockford Rivets game at Rivets Stadium, part of the Northwoods League, or head up the road to catch the Beloit SkyCarp, a High-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, at ABC Supply Stadium.

The Hard Rock Casino Rockford features nearly 1,300 slot machines, 50 live table games, a dedicated poker room, a sportsbook, six restaurants, and Hard Rock Live, a concert venue hosting up to 2,000 guests.

The Rockford Region also delivers year-round celebrations. Stroll on State is our beloved holiday kickoff, complete with lights, live music, a drone show, and fireworks. Rockford City Market brings outdoor concerts and local vendors to downtown throughout the summer. Savor the Flavors of the Rockford Region

Grab A Bite

The Rockford Region’s culinary scene is as rich and diverse as its community, with something to satisfy every palate. From date night to family friendly; vegan to Swedish inspired, there’s no shortage of options.

The Olympic Tavern has been a friendly neighborhood staple since 1945, serving everything from steaks and seafood to sandwiches and pizza. Disco Chicken brings fried chicken sandwiches, craft cocktails, and rooftop views to downtown Rockford – a lively spot that has quickly become a downtown staple. GreenFire brings fresh, wood-fired cuisine to the table. Ambiance Cuisine Cocktails and Catering blends upscale atmosphere with down-home Creole soul food, earning a loyal following for its generously portioned plates and standout macaroni and cheese. Plume continues to set a high bar for atmosphere and inventive menus, and The Norwegian is a favorite for classic Scandinavian-American fare.
