Sure, we may be referred to as the Rockford Region but the region comprises a multitude of communities, each rich with their own look, feel, and assets. As a region, we are a powerhouse — as individual communities, we are unique. No matter which community you call home, we’re glad you’re a part of the Rockford Region!

Winnebago County

● Rockford: As the largest city in the region and the county seat of Winnebago County, Rockford boasts a population of approximately 149,000. Known as the “Forest City,” for its luscious tree-lined neighborhoods, Rockford was home to the Rockford Peaches, the women’s professional baseball team that played from 1943-1954 in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.

● Loves Park: With more than 23,000 residents, Loves Park is celebrated for its extensive park systems and outdoor recreational opportunities, including Rock Cut State Park.

● Machesney Park: Home to 22,950 people, Machesney Park offers a family-friendly atmosphere with numerous parks and robust consumer shopping corridors.

● Cherry Valley: This village has a population of nearly 3,200 and is known for the CherryVale Mall, one of the first enclosed shopping malls in Illinois. It’s also home to the family-friendly waterpark Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Rockford.

● Winnebago: Located near Severson Dells nature preserve, the town of Winnebago (known as ‘Bago’ among its more than 3,000 residents) offers small-town charm, complete with parades and fireworks on special holidays.

● Pecatonica: Nestled in western Winnebago County, Pecatonica is known for its historic downtown and as the home of the Winnebago County Fair, a highlight for locals and visitors alike. It has a population of nearly 2,200 people.

● South Beloit: With a population of approximately 8,000, South Beloit
is located along the Wisconsin border and offers access to the scenic Rock River.

● Durand: This village has around 1,500 residents and is known for
its picturesque downtown and the
annual Durand Biker Bash and
Chili Shootout.

● Rockton: Home to nearly 7,700 people, Rockton features a charming historic district and hosts the annual Old Settlers Days festival, the largest music festival in the stateline area.

● Roscoe: With a population of about 10,800, Roscoe offers family-friendly neighborhoods and proximity to nature. The Ledges Golf Course and beautiful Hononegah Forest Preserve are popular local highlights.

Boone County

● Belvidere: As the county seat of Boone County, Belvidere has a population of approximately 25,000. Known as the “City of Murals,” it features numerous public artworks. It’s also home to the Boone County Fair, one of the largest county fairs
in Illinois.

● Poplar Grove: With around 5,000 residents, Poplar Grove is home to Edwards Apple Orchard – a fourth-generation 100 acre family farm where guests can enjoy crisp apples, apple cider donuts, and freshly-pressed apple cider.

● Capron: This village has a population of nearly 1,400 and offers a close-knit community atmosphere.

● Caledonia: With approximately 200 residents, Caledonia is a small village and home to Farmers Rising, an organization dedicated to local and regenerative farming.

Building brighter futures

If you’re looking for a community that values education and invests in its future, you’ve found the right place. Rockford is proud to offer a variety of educational options that help every student discover their potential and thrive.

At the heart of our region’s educational community is the Rockford Public School District (RPS 205), one of the largest districts in Illinois. RPS 205 is home to innovative programs, world-class facilities, and teachers who are passionate about preparing students for success. From its nationally recognized fine arts programs to its robust College and Career Academies, RPS 205 ensures students are ready for whatever comes next—whether that’s college, a trade, or jumping into the workforce.

A significant education game changer for RPS 205 graduates is Rockford Promise. This community scholarship program offers eligible RPS 205 graduates full tuition to select colleges and universities, making higher education more accessible than ever. Participating institutions include Rockford University, Rock Valley College and Northern Illinois University. The City of Rockford has committed $500,000 annually towards the tuition of eligible students. This is funded through the casino tax from the Hard Rock Casino Rockford and is part of the Casino Tax Revenue Investment Plan.

Rockford Promise is a shining example of how Rockford collaboratively rallies around its students, helping them dream big and achieve more.

In addition to RPS 205, the Rockford Region is also home to other excellent school districts, such as Harlem and Hononegah, as well as a host of private schools that offer personalized and faith-based learning environments. Options like Boylan Catholic High School, Rockford Lutheran, Rockford Christian and Keith Country Day School provide unique educational opportunities that meet the needs of families across the area.

But education doesn’t stop at high school here. Rockford is a hub for innovation, and our 77,000-square-foot Advanced Technology Center (ATC) is a testament to that. This cutting-edge facility, part of Rock Valley College, offers state-of-the-art training in manufacturing, engineering, and other in-demand fields with both credit and non-credit programs. The ATC is designed to prepare students for high-tech careers right here in our region—careers that fuel our economy and keep Rockford growing strong.

For those looking to jump into the trades, the Rockford Region is the place to be. Our community has a proud tradition of skilled trades, with opportunities in welding, machining, electrical work, and more. Apprenticeships and partnerships with local businesses ensure that students gain hands-on experience and land high-paying, rewarding jobs. Mercyhealth’s Javon Bea Hospital and Physician Clinic-Riverside: In January 2019, Mercyhealth unveiled the Javon Bea Hospital and Physician Clinic-Riverside, a $505 million, 563,000-square-foot state-of-the-art medical facility. This development marked the largest construction project in Rockford’s history.

OSF HealthCare’s Innovation Initiatives: OSF Innovation, by OSF Healthcare, embraces change and tackles significant

healthcare challenges. This initiative focuses on inspiring ideas, analyzing data, inventing new solutions, and partnering with various stakeholders to transform care delivery. UW Health’s Women and Children’s Hospital: In March 2021, UW Health’s SwedishAmerican Hospital celebrated the completion of its new Women and Children’s Hospital, a $55 million, 110,000-square-foot facility.
