Red Bluff Community Center

Located at 1500 S. Jackson St., the beautifully designed and landscaped facility has been a versatile gathering place in Tehama County since 1990. Jointly operated by Tehama County and the City of Red Bluff, the Red Bluff Community Center sponsors senior programs, swingin’ square dancing, classes, recreational activities, and offers conference rooms and wedding spaces.

Faith

A vibrant community of faith is active in Red Bluff and throughout Tehama County, representing a diverse group of churches and religious affiliations. There are also many faith-based organizations working with a broad group of constituents to provide assistance and services, including emergency shelter, food aid, crisis pregnancy support, and outreach to children and adults with special needs.

Red Bluff: A Storied History

In 1843, pioneer and prospector Peter Lassen and two fellow pioneers were in the Red Bluff area tracking down horse thieves. Impressed by the land, Lassen sought and received from the Mexican government a grant of 25,000 acres, just a few miles south of where the city now stands. On that tract in early 1847, Lassen laid out a townsite and named it Benton City in honor of Senator Thomas H. Benton of Missouri.

He later journeyed to Missouri to induce settlers to come to the area and also to obtain a charter for a Masonic Lodge that he wished to establish in his settlement.

The townsite suddenly died out following his return in the summer of 1849 due to the discovery of gold, which led settlers to head to the mining area instead. As a result, the lodge charter was transferred to Shasta. However, the publicity given to Lassen’s colonization plan attracted many others to the territory, including several who helped found and build Red Bluff.

Lassen’s name was ultimately given to a county, a national park, a volcano and a highway.

Tehama County’s largest health care facility is St. Elizabeth Community Hospital at 2550 Sister Mary Columba Drive in Red Bluff. United by a vital mutual aid agreement, the Red Bluff and Tehama County Fire Departments safeguard 4,324 square miles, spanning from bustling Red Bluff (8 sq mi) across vast Tehama County. Their seamless collaboration tackles emergencies of all kinds, from fires and medical crises to hazardous materials and public service needs, ensuring prompt response for all within this extensive region.

Most people want to live in a community where they feel welcome and included. The City of Red Bluff is such a place because of the strong sense of volunteerism from our service clubs such as Kiwanis, Rotary and Active 20-30 club, to our individual citizens who are there to help at most events that take place in our city. ‘Like no other event’

Round-Up upholds Red Bluff tradition

A competition between men and women vs. their four-legged competitors or partners is how JB Stacy, Red Bluff Round-Up general manager, describes the 100-plus year tradition.

Taking place every spring, the Red Bluff Round-Up celebrates its 103rd anniversary April 19-21, 2024.

It features two different types of competition – rough stock and timed events. The rough stock includes: Bareback, Saddle Bronc, and of course the crowd favorite Bull Riding; while the timed events features Tie Down Roping, Team Roping, Steer Wrestling and Women’s Barrel Racing and the newest and fastest growing event Women’s Breakaway Roping.

The 2023 102nd Round-Up was “one for the record books” according to Stacy. It included more than 30,000 spectators, as well as sponsors, vendors and volunteers.

“We had 750 contestants from all over the United States come to compete, we even had a couple of Canadian and South American competitors try their luck and show their skills here in Northern California,” Stacy said. “We had record attendance eclipsing our 100th Anniversary rodeo held in 2021.

“Standing room only crowds on Saturday is becoming the norm for us here in Red Bluff and we consistently pack the 9,500-seat arena each year. Each of the past three years since the pandemic we have continued to grow in contestant numbers as well as build our fan base.”

Stacy said the Round-Up exists because of a combination of spectators who return each year, bringing family, friends and new fans, and the contestants who drive hundreds, if not thousands, of miles to compete in the rodeo lifestyle.

Spectators and Competitors, Stacy said, come from all throughout the United States with a majority coming from California, Oregon and Nevada. Others come from Texas, Utah, New Mexico and even as far east as Florida. International competitors come from Canada, South America and Australia on occasion.

Other people who make the Round-Up special include sponsors, who provide prize money which in turn, helps make the Round-Up one of the top 25 rodeos in the country, resulting in the rodeo as one of 60 PRCA rodeos in the annual Playoff Series of Rodeos.

Volunteers, who number more than 350 strong, are the backbone of the Round-Up, explained Stacy.

“Some of the volunteers have been giving their time to this community and the Red Bluff Round-Up for decades,” Stacy said. “We have many who have volunteered for more than 20 years and there are multi-generational families out here giving their time to provide the best for the best.”

In 2024, Stacy said Round-Up officials plan to “bring the best excitement for the best value” to the Red Bluff community.

“We will focus more on our four-legged competitors in 2024 by spending a bit more time highlighting the animal athletes in the arena,” he said. “You see some of the best representatives of the great sport of Professional Rodeo here in Red Bluff, CA, each April.”

Beyond the three-plus hours of entertainment, Stacy said the Round-Up also features more than 70 food and merchandise vendors.

“The thing that impresses out-of-towners the most, is the Grand Opening with the American Flag soaring into the arena, the jets from Miramar flying over and the national anthem,” Stacy said. “The patriotism in the arena is amazing and at times very emotional for those in attendance.”

The community’s involvement has expanded to include car shows, a chili cook off, pancake breakfast and parade with many more activities centering around the Round-Up.

“There is a push to make April the month of Round-Up as we have now included a trail ride that has received national attention,” Stacy said. “Many of the events are fundraisers for the Tough Enough to Wear Pink organization.

“Locally, the Red Bluff Round-Up has given more than $650,000 to our local hospital, St. Elizabeth Hospital, who uses the funds to provide care and treatment as well as purchase equipment to be used here locally.”

Throughout the years, Round-Up General Manager JB Stacy said the event’s economic impact has grown to approximately $7 million to $10 million annually, based on studies conducted by Chico State University.

“During Round-Up week, the hotels fill up not only in Red Bluff but in the surrounding areas as well,” Stacy said. The restaurants see a huge increase from the out-of-towners bringing in their dollars and supporting not only the eateries, but the downtown merchants as well.

In fact, the Round-Up saw an opportunity to capitalize on this influx of outside dollars and opened our own store approximately five years ago. Our Red Bluff Mercantile located at 649 Main St. offers Round-Up items as well as novelty and some higher end jewelry and clothing.

Shop at the farmers’ market year-round at The Saturday Market by the River on 100 Main St., in Red Bluff from 9 a.m. to noon October-April and 8 a.m. to noon May-September. The Wednesday Night Downtown Farmers’ Market includes delicious fruits and vegetables, live music, kids’ activities and vendors. It runs June-August from 5 to 8 p.m. on Washington Street.

Both markets promise a continuous stream of fresh experiences. While new vendors are always a welcome surprise, Bauer emphasizes the enduring presence of dedicated vendors who contribute to the market’s enchanting atmosphere year after year.

Beyond the festivities, a major goal of both markets is to foster food education. The Chamber underscores the significance of conscious food choices and emphasizes initiatives such as Fresh Cook Demos, educational vendors offering food samples and literature.

From an upscale boutique to a shop started by a Tehama County native, businesses within the region strive to put the best foot forward for visitors and locals alike. Here’s a look at three businesses that call Red Bluff home.

Hummingbird House

Hummingbird House is nestled in the heart of Red Bluff, California. Offering six distinct guest accommodations, Hummingbird House includes five appointed rooms and a standalone apartment, each with modern amenities along with Victorian charm. Common areas for relaxation include the parlor, where complimentary freshly baked goods are served every morning. The name reflects a desire to invoke a sense of beauty, vibrancy and grace – qualities Kate Grissom said mirror the charm of hummingbirds. Each room is named after special hummingbirds: Anna, Black-Chinned, Costa, Rufous, Allen and Calliope.

Built in 1901, originally as a family home, Hummingbird House opened in April 2023, following a three-year extensive renovation process after the historic structure was almost destroyed in a 2020 fire. Grissom said owner Ron Clark’s vision led to its transformation following the fire. The renovation preserved the structure’s historical charm.

Grissom hopes visitors will associate Hummingbird House with a blend of historic charm and contemporary luxury – a place where they create cherished memories. “We want guests to remember the warmth of our hospitality and the unique experience we offer,” Grissom said. “Our mission is to provide a haven where the past meets the present, offering a timeless escape for those seeking tranquility and sophistication.”

Dibble Creek Outpost

One of Red Bluff’s newest businesses, Dibble Creek Outpost, emerged in 2023 as a must-stop for locals and tourists alike.

The “roadhouse style” convenience store and restaurant opened in August, at the same location as the Dibble Creek Store – a local staple which burned to the ground in 2007.

Bruce Geveden purchased the property two-and-half years ago from Steve Disibio, who had high hopes someone would open a store for the community. Geveden also owns and operates Green Barn Whiskey Kitchen and Geveden Industrial, both located in Red Bluff.

“I saw a challenge,” Geveden said of his plan to open the outpost on California Highway 36. “We’ve become quite popular with motorcyclists.”

From fuel and a convenience store to a restaurant, the outpost offers lunch and dinner seven days a week. Breakfast is an added bonus on Saturday and Sunday. Geveden describes the restaurant offerings as “Western Style.” The menu includes ribs and smoked prime rib along with burgers and other roadhouse all stylish offerings. Fuel is available 24-7, while the outpost is open from 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Geveden has 27 employees working at the location.

A large outdoor dining area is an added bonus for those making a stop on the road while headed to the coast. Geveden often has karaoke or live bands on the patio, weather permitting, along with an outdoor bar.

The outpost is the first dealer on the West Coast for Sunoco, a premium gasoline and diesel normally found on the East Coast. Sunoco, the official fuel for NASCAR since 2004, is the exclusive fuel provider for all three national racing series in the sport.

Geveden has one goal for people who walk into the outpost. He hopes when they leave, they say, “I’ll be coming back.”

‘Hidden Gem’

Lassen Volcanic National Park

With hydrothermal and volcanic features, Lassen Volcanic National Park is a must-see location for folks traveling through the Red Bluff region.

A recognized national park since Aug. 9, 1916, Jim Richardson, park superintendent, describes it as “a classic, old-style national park, with historic buildings and a lot of history.”

Established one year after Lassen Peak, a plug dome, had its biggest eruption, Lassen Volcanic National Park contains many of the same features found at Yellowstone, including boiling mud pots, hot springs, fry pans and fumaroles – events or openings at the surface which emit volcanic gasses and vapors.

While the 106,000-acre park and Lassen Peak, are named after Peter Lassen, one of the first white settlers in the northern Sacramento Valley, photographer B.F. Loomis’ interest in the park and its volcanic activity helped draw national attention to the region.

This included President Theodore Rosevelt naming Lassen Peak and Cinder Cone – two of the park’s volcanoes – as national monuments in 1907.

Richardson said only a small portion of the park is developed with roads and facilities. A majority of the land is legislative wilderness.

Similar to the design of other older national parks, Lassen includes a primary scenic road, which travels between the most important points in the park.

The southside of the park amenities includes a modern visitor’s center – Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center – which Richardson said replaced an old downhill ski lodge. The north side of the park includes Loomis Plaza, which has several of the historic buildings and a museum which contains many of B.F. Loomis’ photos, cameras and samples of rock, highlighting the history, culture and geology of the park.

Richardson said the park’s mountains, lakes and hydrothermal features, along with a 150-mile system of trails, provide for a variety of recreational opportunities ranging from fishing for trout, backpacking, hiking and more.

‘Accessible Wilderness’

Richardson said one of the best things about the park is the ability people have to park along the highway and within a 10-minute walk from the vehicle, find themselves in complete wilderness.

“It’s quite amazing, the feeling you get, being away from civilization that quickly,” Richardson said. “Many park visitors say it’s an alternative to Yosemite or Sequoia National Parks, because while those parks feel crowded, Lassen does not feel crowded [with people].”

In fact, Richardson said, many visitors call the park a “hidden gem.”

The park often gets the most snow in the entire state of California during the winter, Richardson said. He said it’s not uncommon during the late winter months for the south side visitor center to record 20-foot snow banks and the higher elevations to have more than 40 feet of snow. Because of this, snowshoeing and skiing are often popular winter activities.

Recognizing native influence

Richardson said the park has a long, rich history with at least eight recognized Native American tribes: the Enterprise Rancheria, Greenville Rancheria, Mooretown Rancheria, Pit River Tribe, Redding Rancheria, Shingle Spring Rancheria, Susanville Indian Rancheria and the United Auburn Indian Community.

As a tribute to the natives who played a role in the park, both the visitor center and museum include information, photographs and artifacts which help tell their stories.

The park averages more than a half million visitors each year. It’s one of the largest tourism draws for visitors to the four-county region of Shasta, Tehama, Lassen and Plumas. Richardson said latest statistics, from the 2020-21 tourism year, indicated the park had a $30 million economic impact for the region.

Local industries provide for Tehama County, world

Tehama County is home to industries which continue to impact the region, country and world. Here’s a look at two of those employers.

Lindsay Olives and Bell-Carter Foods

With a new emphasis on hand-stuffed olives and a reinvigoration of the crafted and organic olive lines, officials at Lindsay Olives and Bell-Carter Foods believe the company is embracing a period of transformation and growth.

Under the leadership of Paco Escalante, former CEO of AG Olives and the newest CEO at Bell-Carter Foods, Scott McCoy, vice president of the Olive Division, said the company’s commitment to quality, innovation, and global market presence is unwavering.

“Under his guidance, Bell-Carter Foods is poised to continue its trajectory of growth and success, enhancing its role as a key player in the global olive industry operating from its base here in California,” McCoy said. “Since Paco joined Bell-Carter Foods we have seen a seamless continuation of the company’s values and goals and significant improvements in the quality of our Lindsay Olive products and the service we provide to our farmers, retail and foodservice customers.”

McCoy said Lindsay Olives’ merger with AG Olives was a significant milestone.

“It enabled us to enhance our global presence and capabilities in the olive industry,” McCoy said. “This change underscores our commitment to growth and leadership in the global market and has provided opportunities for our employees to see and feel the effects of our focus on innovation and growth.”

The merger has also led to substantial investments in the Corning facility, building it to become the largest table olive processing plant in the United States.

The Corning facility sits on more than 50 acres and is equipped with advanced technology, something McCoy said is continually upgraded to enhance efficiency and sustainability.

“The scale of our operations not only makes us a key player in the local economies of Corning and Red Bluff, but also gives us a substantial presence in the global olive market,” McCoy said. “Our commitment to the community goes beyond just providing jobs.

“We engage in various community initiatives and contribute to the local economy’s vibrancy, reinforcing our role as an engaged and contributing partner operating in Red Bluff.”

Some of the local efforts include being a main contributor to the Corning Olive Festival, as well as being active members of both the Red Bluff and Corning Chambers of Commerce.

“We continually look for more ways to give back to our local community,” McCoy said. “Beyond economic contributions, Lindsay Olives is committed to being an active and responsible member of the community. Sierra Pacific Industries and Windows

Sierra Pacific Industries and Sierra Pacific Windows specialize in manufacturing high quality wood products, windows and doors thanks, in part, to their four Tehama County plants.

The fourth largest manufacturer of wood windows and doors in the United States, Sierra Pacific Windows’ products can be found throughout the country, as well as in 30 countries worldwide. Sierra Pacific Industries is the third largest lumber producer in the United States and fifth largest in North America.

“Whether it be at Sierra Pacific Windows or Sierra Pacific Industries, there are a variety of career paths available including operations management, engineering, IT, marketing, and maintenance, among others, with an emphasis on promoting from within,” explained Michelle Nystrom, North State Community Relations Manager for Sierra Pacific Industries. “Our largest employee base is in Tehama County with over 1,200 crew members working in our four facilities – Windows, two millwork plants and a remanufacturing plant.

“At our facilities in both Richfield and Red Bluff, we offer jobs ranging from entry level to managerial. We pride ourselves on promoting from within and many of our managers started in labor positions and worked their way up.”

As a third-generation family-owned forest products company, Sierra Pacific Industries specializes in sustainable forest management, timber harvesting and wood products manufacturing, explained Nystrom.

“SPI owns and manages more than 2.4 million acres of timberland in California, Oregon and Washington. We also operate 18 sawmills, three millwork and remanufacturing facilities, eight cogeneration biomass energy plants and Sierra Pacific Windows. Sierra Pacific always maintains a culture of integrity, sustainability, innovation, and family.”

With an emphasis on Growing Forests for the Future, the company seeks to provide a continuous supply of wood products while also sustainably managing the forests for wildlife habitat, water and carbon sequestration for current and future generations.

“We plant and manage the forests in such a way that we don’t take out more than we put back in,” Nystrom said. “We won’t harvest the trees we plant today but we are nurturing and growing them so that our children, our grandchildren and their grandchildren will. Every year we plant an average of 6.5 million trees in California alone. Sierra Pacific owns and manages about 117,000 acres (182 square miles) in Tehama County east of Red Bluff.”

Nystrom said Sierra Pacific Industries and Sierra Pacific Windows leadership believes in investing in the communities where they operate.

One-Stop Shop

Chamber ready to take economic development to new heights

The Red Bluff-Tehama County Chamber of Commerce took
on a major role in 2023 for economic development in the county, following unanimous approval by the Board of Supervisors, marking an exciting new chapter in our community's growth.

“The bottom line that I expressed to the supervisors was we are going to paint a large target over Tehama County so that people who know we’re here will be more interested, and people that don’t know we’re here, they’re going to get interested and they’re going to be able to ask questions and find out more about our amazing area, both for families, for business and growth,” Red Bluff-Tehama County Chamber of Commerce, CEO Dave Gowan said.

Tehama County decided to use federal funding to encourage and expand economic development for the area. And the response to the change has been phenomenal, he said.

“Once the vote happened, and we announced that we’re handling economic development, people came out of the woodwork,” Gowan said. “We have partners in business locally. It’s the right time, and everybody is starting to come together.”

The Chamber has developed a www.tehamacounty.biz as well as a Welcome to Tehama County video.

“We did one [a video] a year ago for Visit Red Bluff and it’s had over 150,000 views, and that’s what’s really brought a lot of great notice to our area,” Gowan said. “I believe that’s going to be duplicated and more with the Welcome to Tehama County video.”

The website includes links to Tehama County, Red Bluff and Corning for building, planning and other economic development resources.

“Through the links on our website, visitors will be able to get to the right person; so there’s less red tape, less phone calls, and more movement,” Gowan said. “We will have a site selector tool that will give all the demographics of Red Bluff and it’ll be in live time. It’ll have properties for sale and for rent.”

The Chamber is also developing new social media sites for economic development and workforce development, and planning a business summit in March.

“We are the economic development one-stop shop, whether they come here to our office in Red Bluff, or whether they go to our website or give us a call,” Gowan said. “Everything they need to know to start or grow a business, we’ll help. We want to strengthen what we have locally already. But we also want to invite and encourage others to come in, whether it be a small business, industry or manufacturing. The County and the City of Red Bluff and the City of Corning are all open to work with businesses, local and outside of our area, to provide what services we can and encourage businesses to come to Tehama County.”

The area in “Upstate” California is a draw to residents, tourists and businesses alike.

“We’re a little bit north of everybody else. It’s more rural and has slower pace, lower cost of living and commute times, providing a better quality of life,” Gowan said. “We’ve met a number of people that have moved to this area for that exact same reason. And now, we’re going to do the same with businesses.”

Those tired of the crazy life of big cities will appreciate Tehama County’s location and amenities.

“We’ve got it all here,” Gowan said. “We’re right on I-5, Highway 99 and Highway 36. There’s just a really great intersection in our area with hundreds of thousands of vehicles that pass through this area.”
