Trail

The Rock Island Spur of Katy Trail State Park is a 47.5-mile trail that stretches through the heart of west-central Missouri. The trail is an adventure for bicyclists, hikers and equestrian users who are seeking to enjoy nature, explore a part of Missouri history and have an enjoyable recreational opportunity.

The trail takes users between Windsor and Pleasant Hill, with additional trailheads at Leeton, Chilhowee and Medford along the way.

The Rock Island Spur can be enjoyed on its own or as part of a much longer trail experience. At Windsor, the trail connects to the 240 mile stretch of the Katy Trail that goes between Clinton to the west and Machens to the east in St. Charles County.

The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, commonly called the Rock Island Line, had its first beginnings in 1852 when its ancestor, the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad, operated its first train between Chicago and Rock Island, Illinois. The Rock Island system stretches across Missouri as far west as Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

The section of the railroad from Windsor to Pleasant Hill traveled through a countryside of fields and grazing land, with evidence of quarries and coal-mining operations. The railroad provided an easy method of transportation for shipments of grain, vegetables, other agricultural goods and coal. Existing towns prospered while new towns sprang up supported by the railroad. A sojourner on the section of railroad heading from Windsor (named for Windsor Castle) would have traveled through small communities such as Bowen, New Castle, Leeton, Post Oak, Chilhowee (a Cherokee name for the Tennessee or “Smoky Mountain), Denton, Medford, Hadsell and Wingate before reaching Pleasant Hill (named for its “pleasant situation on an elevated prairie.”) During its heyday, the Rock Island Line lived up to its reputation made famous in the 1930s American folk song: “The Rock Island Line is a mighty good road; The Rock Island Line is the road to ride.”

Missouri State Parks had long expressed interest in the line as a way to extend a trail system into the Kansas City area. When the railroad filed an official notice of intent to abandon the line, Missouri State Parks filed a request for interim trail use, setting the stage for eventual transfer of the property. This opportunity for a rail-to-trail project was made possible through an amendment to the National Trails System Act, which allows railroad corridors no longer needed for active rail service to be banked for future transportation needs and used in the interim as recreational trails.

Pleasant Hill

Pleasant Hill began in 1828 as a small trading post, but by 1834 Pleasant Hill had become a small village, named for its “pleasant situation on an elevated prairie.”

Pleasant Hill was platted in 1844 by William Winlock Wright, who had bought the original trading post in 1836. In 1844, Pleasant Hill consisted of 12 blocks lying parallel to Main Street (now Highway 7).  Wright died in 1846 and was buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. A year later, Wright’s wife Malinda added 12 more blocks to the original plat. These two plats are now known as “Old Town” Pleasant Hill.

Old Town Pleasant Hill thrived until the Civil War, but border warfare and Order No. 11 nearly destroyed the town. In the fall of 1861, Cole Younger, a Confederate sympathizer who later joined forces with Frank and Jesse James, burned all the homes of Union sympathizers in Pleasant Hill. In retaliation, Union Capt. Henry Palmer burned the homes and some businesses of Confederate sympathizers in the town.

“Everything essentially burned down during the Civil War,” said Pleasant Hill Historical Society Curator Robert Kennedy. “Different sides burned different buildings.”

In addition, Order No. 11, dated Aug. 25, 1863, mandated that everyone living in Cass, Bates and Jackson counties, and in parts of Vernon County, had 15 days to leave the counties and their homes. This forced removal by the government decimated the populations of much of western Missouri. By the end of the Civil War, only about 600 of Cass County’s nearly 12,000 inhabitants remained in the county and they had to seek shelter at the military posts in Harrisonville and Pleasant Hill.

A mural by Tom Lea depicting a Confederate family’s return home after Order No. 11 can be seen in the lobby of the post office at 124 Veterans Parkway. From the north on Highway 7, you can see the only remaining structure from pre-Civil War days — the old Henley Home, used as local headquarters for the Union during the destruction of Pleasant Hill under Order No. 11. A marker of Old Town is located in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

The “New Town” of Pleasant Hill was created in 1865 when the Pacific Railroad was built in Pleasant Hill’s current location. Because of the destruction of the Old Town during the Civil War and the construction of the new railroad, businesses in Old Town, along with most of its population, moved to the new site, which retained the name of Pleasant Hill. The city soon became well populated and an era of growth and prosperity seldom equaled by a western town commenced.

In 1994, the Pleasant Hill Downtown Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is home to many locally owned small businesses, including artists, crafters, antiques, gift shops, eateries, coffee shops, bike shops, a book shop, and the longest operating pool hall this side of the Mississippi River. In addition to its many successful businesses, Pleasant Hill is home to the National Weather Service Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, Missouri office, which serves 37 counties in northern and western Missouri and seven counties in extreme east-central Kansas, including the Kansas City and St. Joseph metropolitan areas. As of 2019, there were 8,683 people and 2,948 households in Pleasant Hill.
