Who We Are
The Parsons Area Chamber of Commerce is a member-driven organization committed to strengthening the
economic and social fabric of Parsons and the surrounding communities. Established to serve as the voice
of local business, the Chamber represents a diverse membership that includes small businesses, major
employers, nonprofit organizations and community leaders. We believe in the power of connection and
collaboration, and we are dedicated to making Parsons a place where businesses can thrive and families
can enjoy a high quality of life.
What We Do
The Parsons Area Chamber of Commerce provides leadership, resources and advocacy to help local businesses succeed and the community prosper. We host regular networking events, educational workshops and signature events such as the PK Art Fest which brings local and regional artists of all ages together to celebrate the arts. The Chamber also works closely with city and county governments to promote economic development and encourage investment in the Parsons area. Through marketing, member spotlights and community initiatives, we help tell the story of Parsons, a community rich in opportunity, innovation and hometown pride.

We are best described as nestled where the tall grass prairies meet the Ozark foothills.
Our unique location brings a mix of people and geography located in the Southeast or otherwise
known as the “green corner” of the great state of Kansas. Lakes, rivers and rolling
countryside surround the rural city of Parsons here in Labette County, bringing the great outdoors to
the footstep of small-town charm.
The area is rife with historical ties to the pre-civil war era and the western expansion of the early
American railroad. The abundance of wildlife is astounding, and thousands of visitors make Labette
County their home for several weeks of the year to fish, hike, hunt or simply enjoy the expansive great
outdoors..

Things to Do
Curious Minds Discovery Zone is a hands-on children's museum designed to spark imagination, creativity
and learning through play. It’s the perfect place for families with young children to explore,
experiment and discover together. Every exhibit is crafted to engage kids in meaningful activities that
blend fun with education.
From building with wooden planks and pulleys to exploring the water table, children are encouraged to
touch, build, create and pretend. The museum features a variety of themed play areas including a mini
grocery store, post office and restaurant. These spaces help children build early literacy, math,
science and social skills through real-world role play and problem-solving.
The environment is clean, safe and welcoming, with staff who are passionate about early childhood
development. Curious Minds is also an ideal spot for birthday parties, field trips and group outings.
With frequent new exhibits and seasonal programming, there is always something fresh and exciting to
experience.

Fueled by natural beauty and laid‑back charm, Parsons offers three standout disc golf courses
ideal for players and families looking for outdoor fun.
Tolen Creek is the premier course with 18 concrete‑tee holes stretching nearly 6,000 feet
through a mix of open fairways and wooded sections by a pond and creek. Rated 4.2 out of 5 by U-Disc, it
offers shot variety and scenic views that challenge mid‑level players while remaining enjoyable
for all.
Glenwood Park winds through Parsons’s arboretum and adjacent greenery with 18 holes over about
5,400 feet. Its moderate difficulty and water hazards offer strategic play, and players
consistently comment on its peaceful tree‑lined layout and thoughtful signage.
Forest Park is a compact 9‑hole course in town featuring flat terrain beneath mature oaks and
even a miniature railroad. While rated lower at 3.0, it’s an approachable option for beginners or
families seeking a short outing.
Between courses you’ll find picnic areas, open spaces and trails—perfect for mixing in
nature walks or snacks between rounds. With several local leagues and a welcoming community, Parsons
disc golf is a hidden gem in Southeast Kansas. Plus, with eight other courses rated 3 or higher all
within a 30 minutes drive, Parsons is perfectly poised to be the homebase for your disc golf
vacation!

There are numerous opportunities to fish in and around Parsons and Labette County. Big Hill Lake, about
twenty minutes southwest is the premier location with 1240 acres of surface area, with plenty of
different species of fish, such as Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, White bass, Crappie and catfish. The
two concrete ramps handle lots of boats and there is plenty of standing timber to challenge one’s
fishing prowess. Big Hill also boasts a main basin large enough for skiing and wake boarding.
Parsons City Lake sits just a few miles north of town and is known for Crappie, Bass and big Flathead
catfish. Saugeye can be caught below the spillway in Labette Creek, especially in the springtime water
flows.
There is the Prairie West Pond, located on north 32nd street in Parsons and features a concrete fishing
berm and a large wooden dock. This small body of water holds Largemouth Bass, Warmouth Bass, crappie,
catfish and scads of perch. There are also a number of waterfowl living on the pond such as Canada
Geese, Mallard ducks and new this year Black Bellied Whistling Ducks.
For the more adventurous the Neosho River winds through Labette County with low water dams located east
of Parsons as well as in Oswego and Chetopa where ample water access abounds. Both are less than a half
hour drive from Parsons.
Twelve miles south of town lies Altamont Lake, a popular camping and fishing spot. Well groomed and
stocked, this city lake is a great place to spend the day.
And lastly one should peruse the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks map of the SEK strip mining
pits located east and south of Parsons for even more opportunities. These lakes are stocked with
numerous species of fish including Hybrid White Bass and Trout.

Located in the heart of Forest Park, the Parsons Splash Pad is a favorite summer spot for families and
kids of all ages. Open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from mid-May through October, it features
motion-activated fountains, colorful spray features, and safe, non-slip surfaces—perfect for
cooling off on hot days.
Opened in 2022, the splash pad is part of a larger park that includes playgrounds, picnic shelters,
sports courts and a historic MKT caboose. Managed by the Parsons Recreation Commission, it’s free
to use and conveniently located near restrooms and shaded areas.
The splash pad offers simple, safe and splashy fun right in the heart of Parsons.

October 23 - Thursday - Monster March Downtown
Parsons - Children through 5th grade are welcome to celebrate Halloween a bit early by
dressing in their best costume and parading through Downtown Parsons to collect candy and prizes from
local businesses and organizations.
November 7 & 8 - Friday & Saturday - Shop & Shine Holiday Open House
- It’s beginning to look a lot like the holidays around Parsons! Shopping in our historic downtown
has never looked better with the addition of over 10,000 lights, newly restored antique light
sculptures, free carriage rides and a Special Guest helping us light it all up. Join us at the Gathering
Place Pocket Park at 6:30 p.m. Friday for cookies, cocoa and Santa, then bring your chairs and blankets
to our Movies on Broadway screen at 18th and Broadway for a festive movie to kick off the season. Sales
and deals at all the stores downtown both Friday and Saturday!
November 11 at 9 a.m. - Tuesday - Veterans Day Parade - We pause to
honor our brave veterans with a parade through Downtown Parsons. All veterans are invited and encouraged
to walk, roll, or ride the provided floats. Local school children and the public witness the importance
of honoring those who have bravely served our country.

Parsons, Kansas, boasts a variety of local eateries that are proud members of the Parsons Chamber of

For a variety of comfort food and a lively atmosphere, Kitchen Pass Restaurant & Bar
at 1711 Main St. stands out with its creative menu and local charm. Open weekdays for lunch and dinner,
this is a Parsons standard.
Just down the block, Remnant Café (1719 Main St.) offers a laid‑back café
experience with gourmet coffee, light meals and locally made cookies and treats. Serving breakfast and
lunch Monday-Saturday, this is the go-to place to meet friends and colleagues.
Joe’s Italian Restaurant, located at 3330 W. Main St., is the go‑to
destination for pasta lovers. Opened in the fall of 2025, Joe’s is an exciting addition to the
local fare in Parsons.

(2010 Main St.), and Taco Mayo (3210 W. Main St.) offer convenient

Edwards Manor House: A Victorian Gem in Parsons
Located at 1527 Morgan Ave. in Parsons, Kansas, the Edwards Manor House offers visitors a nostalgic
journey into the Folk Victorian style of the late 19th century. Built in 1881 and inhabited by the
E. H. Edwards family for over 75 years, this 6,000-square‑foot residence, once a local
showplace, now has been lovingly restored to serve as a bed & breakfast and event venue.

Parsons is more than just a place to live; it’s a place where community spirit thrives through
the dedicated work of civic and service organizations. These groups are the heart of local volunteerism,
offering vital support, leadership opportunities and meaningful service that uplifts residents of all
ages.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 704 is located at 105 Main St. Committed to
supporting veterans and military families, the VFW provides benefits advocacy, scholarships and
transition assistance. Their outreach efforts ensure that those who served are not forgotten and
continue to receive the support they’ve earned.
Nearby, the Parsons Elks Lodge #527 at Central and Crawford champions local charitable
work through programs that serve youth, veterans and families. Meeting twice a month, the Elks welcome
those who want to combine service with fellowship.
The Parsons Lions Club gathers twice monthly at the First Baptist Church Education
Building, focusing on vision screenings, youth initiatives and global service projects. Similarly, the
Parsons Rotary Club, meeting weekly at the Wall Family Center, emphasizes leadership,
service and international connection.
Another dynamic group is Soroptimist International of Parsons, a women-led
organization that advocates for the education and empowerment of women and girls through scholarships,
mentorship and career-focused programs. Soroptimists meet at noon on Tuesdays at the Kitchen Pass
meeting room August through May.
The Parsons Kiwanis Club, meeting weekly at noon on Wednesdays at Peter’s
Chinese, works to build leadership and character in young people. Through various youth-centered
initiatives, Kiwanis empowers the next generation to serve and lead.
For those looking to volunteer, Parsons offers impactful opportunities. The Reach One Teach One
Foundation empowers youth through education, mentorship and job readiness programs. The
Care Cupboard Hygiene Pantry provides essential hygiene supplies to families in need
and welcomes volunteers to help sort, organize and assist. At the Labette County Emergency
Assistance Center (LCEAC), volunteers can make a real difference by helping distribute food,
clothing and support services. Operation Bright Touch, a community beautification
initiative, also offers chances to get involved by planting flowers, cleaning public spaces, and helping
keep Parsons vibrant and welcoming. The new Love Labette Week is a grassroots
initiative encouraging community members to connect with neighbors to serve and beautify the community

History
When Parsons was founded in 1871, what is now Broadway was originally called Forest Avenue. Located
near the MKT depot, it quickly became the city’s main commercial corridor. The first lots sold
were on the south side of the 1800 block, which by 1872 featured frame buildings housing a bank, post
office and opera house.
In the early 1900s, many of these wooden structures were replaced with brick buildings. E.L. Green
built 1810-1812 Forest in 1901, followed by John McCurry’s 1806-1808 Forest in 1904. Forest Avenue
was renamed Broadway in 1906.
Over the past 120 years, these buildings have housed a variety of businesses, from grocery and clothing
stores to insurance agencies and music shops. For the last two decades, they were used primarily for
storage.
In 2023, a Historic Economic Asset Lifeline (HEAL) grant from the State of Kansas helped restore
1810-1812 Broadway. Today, the building is home to Katy Antiques and Cherry on Top. Cherry on Top offers
handcrafted, in-house ice cream in a wide variety of flavors, along with sugar-free and dairy-free
options, making it a sweet spot for everyone.
In 2025, the Parsons Community Development Corporation purchased 1806–1808 Broadway, with plans to stabilize and resell it. A mural is underway on the east wall, further energizing Broadway’s revitalization.
Healthcare
Labette Health brings high-quality, accessible care to southeast Kansas through a wide network of
services. Its flagship 99-bed hospital in Parsons offers advanced amenities including robotic surgery,
3-D mammography, inpatient rehab, aquatic therapy and a full fitness and wellness center.
With clinics across communities like Parsons, Independence, Cherryvale, Chanute and Oswego, Labette
Health provides convenient access to primary care, pediatrics, women’s health, cancer care and
more. The Independence Healthcare Center is expanding to include additional exam rooms and upgraded
emergency and imaging services.
The Labette Health Mobile Clinic extends care even further, delivering checkups, screenings, telehealth
and occupational health directly to events and workplaces.
Nationally recognized for excellence, Labette Health has recently earned “Top 100 Hospital in the
Nation for Orthopedic Care” and “#1 Hospital in the State for Orthopedic Care” by
CareChex. It was also designated as one of America’s “Best Hospitals for Emergency
Care” by Women’s Choice Award.

Bowen Pharmacy is a locally owned and operated pharmacy that has served the Parsons community for

Education
Parsons and Labette County offer families the unique advantage of high-quality education from the
earliest years through college, all without having to leave the county. From nurturing preschools to
nationally recognized public schools and a thriving community college, the region delivers exceptional
learning opportunities for every age and stage.
Off to a Great Start
For our youngest learners, preschools like Eden Academy provide a warm and enriching start. With a
focus on early childhood development, Eden Academy emphasizes hands-on experiences, literacy and
social-emotional skills in a safe and stimulating environment. Their curriculum is designed to foster
curiosity and confidence, giving children a solid foundation as they prepare for kindergarten. Other
early childhood programs across the county, both private and other public preschools such as at
Bartlett, Meadow View, and Lincoln schools, offer similar support and quality, ensuring every child has
access to a strong beginning.
Small Class Sizes Equal Big Advantages
As students move into elementary and secondary education, they are well-served by two strong public
school districts, USD 503 Parsons and USD 506 Labette County.
USD 503 serves the city of Parsons and includes Garfield Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Guthridge
Elementary, Parsons Middle School and Parsons High School. The district has made significant investments
in STEM education and technology integration, providing students with access to robotics, coding and
digital tools from an early age. Parsons High School offers dual-credit courses, career pathways, and a
strong emphasis on preparing students for both college and the workforce. The district is also known for
its vibrant arts and music programs, inclusive support services and strong community partnerships.
USD 506 spans a large geographic area and includes several small-town and rural schools such as Meadow
View, Mound Valley, Bartlett, Edna, and Altamont. This district is known for its close-knit school
communities, low student-to-teacher ratios and a focus on academic excellence. Labette County High
School offers a wide range of academic courses, college credit opportunities, and career and technical
education programs. Students also benefit from strong athletic and extracurricular programs, including
award-winning FFA, theater, music and arts activities.
Making College Affordable for All
Labette Community College (LCC), located in Parsons, rounds out the county’s educational
offerings with affordable, high-quality higher education. LCC provides associate degrees, technical
certifications and transfer pathways to four-year universities. The college is known for its nursing,
allied health, welding and business programs, as well as its personalized instruction and small class
