The Opportunity is Now!

Thank you for your support of the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce. I am honored and excited to serve as your Chairman of the Board of Directors in 2023.

Overland Park has been a special place for me. I moved to Overland Park just before high school, got married here, launched a business and grew it for 27 years. That business was acquired by Augeo and I am now the president of the experience division, based in booming downtown Overland Park.

Overland Park has always represented opportunity for me. Living here provides the opportunity to receive a quality education, pursue high growth job opportunities, worship, enjoy beautiful parks and trails and recreation, and partake in numerous cultural opportunities. This is a visionary time for Overland Park. I was privileged to serve on the steering committee for ForwardOP, a community vision and strategic plan for continued success into the next
20-25 years.

The Chamber is critical to executing this vision. The Chamber enjoys fearless, strategic, dedicated leadership. Tracey Osborne Oltjen and her team realized the competitive reality emerging from the pandemic – other communities and regions are aggressively pursuing the same businesses, jobs, talent, and investment we want here. Our community needs to adapt, pivot and embrace boldness.

A result of this was the creation of Opportunity NOW, a five-year community and economic development initiative that will ensure our competitiveness as a community. Opportunity Now has three actionable goals: Attract, retain and align talent; Boost job growth and business investment; and Enhance a pro-business environment.

With our sights on the future, we are still recognized for excellence in the present. The Overland Park Chamber was recognized with Five Star accreditation by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which is earned by fewer than 1% of all our nation’s chambers. The Chamber has created a future legacy over the last five years with $626.5 million in capital investment and almost 14,000 new and retained jobs. Other achievements include championing the $300 million modernization and expansion of U.S. Highway 69 and graduating more than 1,000 leaders from Leadership Overland Park.

We all have an Overland Park story and our collective stories represent the gifts of opportunity we have received, the drive to provide equitable opportunities for everyone, and the legacy of opportunity that will live for future generations in our community.

Chamber programs and events provide members with opportunities to interact with each other, pursue career development, learn about community developments, and hear industry experts sharing expertise that helps businesses and their employees be more successful.

The Chamber listens to the concerns, goals and challenges of businesses. With a full-time lobbyist and Public Policy & Advocacy Committee, the Chamber advocates every day for pro-business policies and the quality of life infrastructure that is the bedrock of Overland Park’s success.

Since 1983, more than 1,000 business professionals have participated in the Chamber Foundation’s annual Leadership Overland Park program to inform those who are passionate about their community and help prepare them to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow as leaders. It is a six-month program with 10 full-day sessions beginning each January.

The Chamber’s Young Professionals program provides professional, social, mentoring and philanthropic opportunities for the next generation of business and civic leaders in our community. It is designed to help Overland Park area companies recruit and retain young talent.

Last year, the Chamber announced that dozens of local businesses had pledged $2.8 million toward a $3 million goal to invest in a five-year workforce, community and economic development strategic initiative, Opportunity NOW. The never-before comprehensively leveraged resources will tackle challenges threatening the community’s long-term economic prosperity and qualify of life.

The Chamber has earned Five Star accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a designation received by fewer than 1% of the nation’s chambers.

Economic Development

Economic Development doesn’t just mean attracting new companies and jobs to our community, it also means working to make sure existing companies prosper and grow. Both are the commitment of the Chamber’s Economic Development Council (EDC).

The EDC is a partnership among the Chamber of Commerce, the City of Overland Park and business investors. The Chamber EDC leverages the support of the business community to improve economic vitality. These efforts mean more customers for you and a healthy community in which to live and work.

The Chamber’s EDC team:

•  Markets and promotes the benefits of having a business in Overland Park

• Facilitates new business recruitment opportunities

• Promotes business expansion opportunities

• Facilitates relationships among development stakeholders

• Tracks and measures demographic and economic data

Since 2020, the EDC team has worked with companies that have committed to add nearly 5,000 new jobs at an average salary greater than $80,000, and with capital investments above $162 million.

As workforce and talent recruitment continues to be a challenge for companies, the Chamber is working on initiatives to address this impediment to business success.

Educational opportunities are the bedrock of an excellent community

Guided by a philosophy that well-funded education is a cornerstone for economic growth, community leaders long have been committed to supporting schools. Students from the three major school districts serving Overland Park outperform state and national peers on college entrance exams and other assessment measures. In 2022, 81 students from the three districts were National Merit semifinalists. Additionally, Overland Park residents are above the national average in educational attainment, with 64.1% having at least a bachelor’s degree.

Colleges and Universities

More than a dozen institutions offer opportunities where traditional college students can earn a degree and working professionals can acquire an additional academic degree, expand their skills or embark on a new career path.

Johnson County Community College, the state’s largest institution of higher education, has been in Overland Park more than 50 years and offers programs to address workforce needs of local businesses.

A one-eighth-cent sales tax funds the Johnson County Education Research Triangle (JCERT) to support higher education and degree offerings through a unique partnership between Johnson County, the University of Kansas and Kansas State University. JCERT has resulted in new STEM-related educational facilities in Johnson County including the Business, Engineering Science and Technology (BEST) Building at KU’s Edwards Campus, the International Animal Health and Food Safety Institute at Kansas State University Olathe, and The University of Kansas Clinical Research Center.

Health care that is state-of-the-art
and convenient

Overland Park residents have access to some of the best and most up-to-date medical facilities. Major medical facilities, specialty hospitals, numerous urgent care and emergency medical facilities, and dozens of assisted living, skilled nursing and home health companies provide medical care from birth to the senior years. Community leaders and a philanthropic business community support a large network of nonprofit organizations working to ensure that the increasingly diverse human service needs are being addressed.

A community on the go

Overland Park residents can enjoy an active lifestyle with a diverse range of options for leisurely pursuits – from sports and recreation to unique entertainment venues, flourishing arts and some of the Midwest’s best shopping and dining. With 83 city parks, five public swimming pools, miles of recreational trails, state-of-the-art community centers, public and private golf courses, there’s no lack of ways to stay healthy.

For sports and recreation, Overland Park has premier facilities that include Blue Valley Recreation Commission’s rec centers and sports complexes, Scheels Overland Park Soccer Complex and Urban Air Adventure Park.

Now under construction south Overland Park is the AdventHealth Sports Complex at Bluhawk.

The 12-acre Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead and the 300-acre Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens are unique places to appreciate nature and our agricultural heritage.

The Overland Park Farmers’ Market in Downtown Overland Park is a vibrant public gathering spot that builds community pride and spirit by bringing together shoppers of all ages and interests. In a nationwide contest held in 2022, it received the most votes to be named the favorite farmers market in the country.

The Johnson County Arts and Heritage Center, housed in a modernist landmark built in 1959, is home to the Johnson County Museum and numerous arts and theatre programs. A newer landmark is the Museum at Prairiefire, known for its gleaming dichroic glass fac,ade on the outside and its meaningful learning experiences on the inside.

Visual and performing arts flourish. Sculptures and other artworks are on display in city parks, along major thoroughfares and in numerous public spaces. Johnson County Community College enriches the community with its Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, renowned Oppenheimer Collection and performing arts at the college’s first-class venues.

A full season of events presents the opportunity to enjoy beautiful outdoor settings at events such as the Clock Tower Concert Series at the Farmer’s Market, concerts in city parks, festivals in the downtown district and numerous events at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens.

Newer attractions feature unique entertainment where you can hit microchipped golf balls in climate-controlled hitting bays, play bocce or pickleball, throw an axe at the target, work as a team to escape a locked room, face off against friends, family or co-workers in a game show arena, and compete in a facility with more than 35 immersive high-technology game rooms.

Government that is responsible
and responsive

Overland Park’s tremendous growth from its incorporation in 1960 to its status today as the second largest city in Kansas has not happened by chance. It is due largely to the foresight of community leaders and a progressive city government.

Sharp vision and planning resulted in the Overland Park we know today – a city often recognized as a leader in quality of life. The City continues to provide highly rated public services while preserving a city mill levy that is considerably lower than any other first-class city in the state.

In frequent citywide surveys, residents overwhelmingly report being satisfied with the City of Overland Park’s services, amenities, programs and image.

Johnson County is the most populous county in Kansas, with more than 600,000 residents, and Overland Park comprises about one-third of the county’s total population.

Between 2010 and 2019, Johnson County accounted for 78% of the population growth in Kansas and 39% of the increase in the Kansas City metropolitan region.

The county has the highest median household income in Kansas and is among the most affluent in the United States.

In addition to providing general public services and safety, Johnson County Government operates a major intermodal transit system that includes two airports, an urban busing system and special transit services with RideKC, 14-branch library system, sports and recreation programs for all ages and interests, and a park and recreation district with 10,000 acres in 17 developed parks and others under development.

Johnson County has been the state’s largest provider of employment since 1995. Between 2011 to 2021, the Johnson County economy accounted for 105% of total net job growth in Kansas. The number of jobs in Johnson County increased by 44,044 from 2011 to 2021, accounting for 49% of the job growth in the Kansas City MSA.

In 2021, $775 million in state sales tax was collected in Johnson County, amounting to 26% of the state’s total revenue from this source.

Committed to investing in transportation

Interstates 35, 435 and 635 and U.S. Highway 69 bisect Overland Park, placing all parts of the city within four miles of a major highway. These major networks minimize commute times, providing convenience for residents and helping lower the cost of doing business. The newly rebuilt Kansas City International Airport is about 22 miles away and Johnson County Executive Airport is nearby in Olathe.

With a growing population, Overland Park is continuously working to facilitate traffic flow, which residents rank as a top priority. In 2021, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly announced that the U.S. 69 Expansion and Modernization project – a $300 million investment – was committed to construction as part of a bipartisan transportation plan. The completed project is scheduled to open in 2025.

RideKC transit services offered by Johnson County provide transportation to major universities and key points of commerce with regional connections to other parts of Johnson County, Lawrence and downtown Kansas City, Mo.

The Overland Park City Council adopted a first-ever comprehensive bicycle plan for the city that includes dedicated bike lanes on streets and enhancements to the 17-mile long Indian Creek Bike and Hike Trail.

The economic engine of Kansas

Overland Park’s strong corporate environment is often recognized as the economic engine that fuels the State of Kansas. Business owners are drawn to Overland Park because of its highly educated workforce, business-friendly environment, consistently healthy economy and excellent quality of life. Executives establish businesses here because employees and their families can enjoy an appealing lifestyle and have access to high-quality schools.

Overland Park is home to more than 10,000 businesses, including large employers with headquarters here such as Black & Veatch, Netsmart and WellSky. It also has regional offices of numerous national and international corporations.

Overland Park’s robust business climate encourages expansion, and many local businesses, particularly those in technology, have been busy creating new jobs. Innovative companies such as Creative Planning, Shamrock Trading Company, and Rx Savings Solutions have experienced significant growth and expansion in recent years.

Last year, 16 Overland Park businesses were included in the Kansas City Business Journal’s list of top 50 fastest-growing companies. Plus, Inc. included three Overland Park companies in its list of fastest-growing businesses in the Midwest.

From Downtown Overland Park to the southern reaches of the city, new mixed use developments such as the Edison District, Promontory, CityPlace and Bluhawk are combining modern office space with retail and residential components, creating pedestrian-friendly areas where residents can live, work and play in the same neighborhood.

Overland Park has been a major retail destination since Metcalf South Mall opened in 1967. A few years later, Oak Park Mall secured Overland Park’s status as a retail kingpin. Continued retail development over the years has made this the place where local entrepreneurs and national chains alike want to set up shop.

Visitors help boost Overland Park’s economy
