As Mayor of Niles, it is my honor to extend a warm welcome to everyone who visits, lives or works in our vibrant village.

I’m proud to share that Niles is being recognized across the Chicago area as a true “renaissance community.” Through bold initiatives to attract new businesses, expand luxury housing and welcome exciting new restaurants, our village is experiencing a remarkable period of growth and revitalization.

Known for its family-friendly charm, Niles is a wonderful place to live, work and thrive. With top-rated schools, low crime and a strong sense of community, it’s no surprise that our village continues to flourish. Guided by forward-thinking leadership, we’re committed to ensuring Niles remains a welcoming, dynamic place for both current and future residents.

Last year, we proudly celebrated the 125th anniversary of Niles — a milestone filled with pride and progress. One of the highlights was unveiling the redevelopment plans for the iconic Golf Mill Shopping Center. This once nationally recognized destination is being transformed with upscale shops, new restaurants and luxury apartments that will attract young professionals and visitors from across the region.

Niles Design District

Your Road to a Better Home

Niles is home to a number of businesses on or near Milwaukee Avenue that offer both the expertise and the tools to help homeowners remodel their homes. For the past several years, they’ve collectively become known as the Niles Design District, a home improvement destination for consumers, designers and contractors.

While the Niles Design District’s borders once ran from approximately Oakton Street south to Albion Avenue, the district has expanded a bit, says Alan Zielinski, president of the Niles Design District, the Niles Chamber of Commerce and his own nearly 60-year-old home improvement business, Better Kitchens Design Center. Today, the district starts on the north at Monroe Street near Booby’s and extends all the way south to West Imlay Avenue. Village officials invite home improvement businesses regardless of their locations in the village to also join the Niles Design District.

“The village board helped establish and fund the Design District to encourage people from Niles to shop in the district and to also encourage people from outside Niles to find everything they need here without having to travel throughout the Chicagoland area,” says John Melaniphy, director of economic development for the Village of Niles.

Founded in 2019, the Design District includes kitchen and bath retailers, plumbing supply stores, decorators and hardware stores. The idea for the district came to Zielinski while on vacation when he saw an assortment of t-shirt shops vying for the same tourists’ dollars. His thoughts turned to all the Niles kitchen and bath shops.

“I thought rather than being competitors, why don’t we band together to advance this district and enrich the stores while also enriching the community?” Zielinski recalls. “I also thought of the district tagline: Niles Design District: Your Road to a Better Home.”

Enhanced Stock

The Niles Design District’s mission blends well with the village’s “Grow Your Home” concept, which aims to provide incentives to help homeowners expand their homes. Many of the houses in Niles are ranch-style homes built in the 1950s on modest-sized lots. The Grow Your Home program provides up to $10,000 in permit fee waivers to add anything from a covered front porch to much more ambitious additions, Melaniphy says.

It’s hoped Niles homeowners and outsiders will find the materials and guidance they need within the Niles Design District. “The Niles Design District doesn’t just serve the residents of the Village of Niles for home improvement needs,” Melaniphy adds. “It also attracts consumers from throughout the Chicago area, adding to our sales tax base and helping people from outside the area learn about the retail offerings of Niles.”

Arts & Culture in Niles

A Growing Creative Landscape

The arts are taking root in new and visible ways throughout the Village of Niles. Thanks to the work of the Public Arts and Culture Advisory Council, residents can look forward to a number of creative additions to public spaces — including new murals and sculpture installations planned for Golf Mill Park and the Village’s upcoming Plaza development.

Inside the Niles Family Fitness Center, the NVision Art Gallery offers a welcoming space for local and regional artists to showcase their work. With rotating exhibits throughout the year, the gallery invites visitors to experience the variety and talent within our creative community.

The Council also supports community programming that makes the arts accessible and enjoyable for all. Annual events such as the Niles Art En Plein Air and the Last Call Before Fall Art & Music Fest invite community participation and celebrate the village’s commitment to the arts.

Whether it’s a walk through the park or a visit to a neighborhood event, arts and culture in Niles continue to grow — bringing color, creativity and a sense of connection to everyday life.

Niles History on Display

The Niles Historical Society was chartered in 1971 and has called the former Cook County Sheriff’s Police Station on Milwaukee and Ballard home since 1985. At just over 100 years old, this building serves as a vital piece of Niles history and is one of the oldest municipal structures in Niles and a local landmark. Tours of the museum offer visitors two floors of exhibits with a suggested donation of $5.

The second floor Auditorium can accommodate up to 50-55 people, depending on the setup and is used to host programs, guest speakers and exhibits. It is available for rent for private parties, events and meetings. Renters do not have to live in Niles or have their business located here to rent the facility. Corporate and Institutional members receive a discount on rental fees. Outside food and beverage is allowed but is limited to that room.

The Niles Historical and Cultural Center is currently open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and observe the same national holidays as the Village of Niles. All are welcome to tour the museum during open hours, however group tours are by appointment only. Admission is free with a suggested donation of $5. Guided group tours should be scheduled in advance by calling (847) 390-0160 or emailing [email protected]. An elevator is available for those who need assistance.

In 2025, more than ever, we need your support to help us preserve the history of Niles. There are several ways to do so. Please become a member, renew your membership, donate artifacts, photos, newspaper articles or verifiable stories of Niles to include oral history and VOLUNTEER! The Many Benefits of the Niles Park District

We all remember going to the park as a child or with our parents and sometimes including the family dog. A visit to the park can provide recreation, renewal and a healthy dose of Vitamin D and fresh air.

The Niles park district is run by professionals under a board of dedicated volunteers to offer a number of benefits, including open land and natural prairies for a wide range of activities.

Depending on the park, there are a myriad of benefits to enjoy. From fauna to wildlife, Niles’ parks are ideal for strengthening the body and mind, learning new skills and sports or meeting up with friends and family for a fun day enjoying our city’s many park options.

In 2024, the Village of Niles rolled out a Front Porch Incentive program providing up to $4,000 in savings and reimbursement when a front porch is added. Front porches are the ideal gathering place for neighbors and friends and can build a strong sense of community. The Village of Niles wants to bring people together so that neighbors can greet each other walking by and have a face-to-face chat to catch up on community news or share a drink and stay engaged in their community.

Niles Park District

Niles Park District has several outdoor parks and playgrounds. Many of these have tennis courts, basketball courts and pickleball courts. Please visit the historic Tam O’Shanter Golf Course. Niles Senior Center

Welcome to the Niles Senior Center, the community hub for older adults. Discover a range of recreational, educational and wellness programs tailored for seniors. Niles Teen Center

The Niles Teen Center seeks to develop, connect, and invest in local sixth to 12th-grade teens by providing a welcoming, structured and inviting space. Niles, Maine Townships’ Valuable Public Services

The township is the longest-standing form of government in North America. The two townships serving Niles, Niles Township and Maine Township, offer citizens a wide variety of services and amenities, including some vital to day-to-day life.

Niles Township

Niles Township covers parts of Niles, Glenview, Golf, Morton Grove, Lincolnwood and Skokie. A prime example of Niles Township’s offerings is its food pantry, located at 8341 Lockwood Avenue in Skokie, directly behind the township’s main government building at 5255 Lincoln Avenue. The pantry serves an average of 6,000 individuals yearly, almost double the number in 2024.

The Niles Township Respite Center is situated in the basement of St. Paul Lutheran Church, 5201 Galitz Street in Skokie “It’s for any of our neighbors experiencing homelessness,” says Erica Jellerson, spokeswoman for Niles Township. “While open to all adults, it most often serves single men who historically have more difficulty finding a place to stay. The last time we talked to our housing advocates, the average wait for shelter is 19 days when calling 311 in Cook County. So, this provides a place to stay during the day. We are the only daytime shelter in our township.”

Another service is provided by the Niles Township Assessor’s Office, which gives residents free property tax assistance when they make appointments beforehand with the assessor. “Scott Bagnall is our township assessor, and he helps with appeals and exemptions,” Jellerson says. “Other services at our office include passport services and a free notary.”

In addition, Niles Township stages blood drives and flu shot clinics and holds a mobile DMV, she reports. To learn more, contact the township’s main number, 847-673-9300.

Maine Township

In Maine Township, which not only serves residents in Niles, but also in parts of Des Plaines, Park Ridge, Glenview, Golf, Morton Grove and Rosemont, the assessor provides residents a service many find imperative. “We have an assessor who helps people reduce their property taxes, when appropriate,” says Karen J. Dimond, supervisor of Maine Township, with government offices located at 1700 Ballard Road in Park Ridge.

“Our clerk’s office provides hunting and fishing licenses, passports and the license plate stickers that must be renewed regularly,” she adds. “We also offer reduced fare RTA passes.”

Maine Township also provides a very large food pantry serving about 200 families a week, Dimond says. That number is rising, in part because of greater need, and in part because Catholic Charities recently closed its Des Plaines pantry.

“We’re really getting a lot of good quality food, meat and dairy products in addition to the usual canned and boxed foods,” she says. “Because the quality is higher, we’re attracting more people who are food insecure and don’t always know if they’ll have food.”

It’s Time for a Niles-Maine District Library Card!

The Niles-Maine District Library offers something for everyone in our community, from books and magazines to virtual reality and Tools for Better Living. Come use our spaces for quiet study rooms, collaboration and crafting in the Teen Underground, and story times and scavenger hunts in KidSpace. Need help learning a skill, or just something free and fun to do on a weeknight? We offer classes and programs for all ages and interests. We’ll teach you how to use a computer and work with Artificial Intelligence (AI). Take home a craft kit to make a bookmark or grab a spice club bag for a sample of a new spice to cook with and a recipe with information on how to use it. We have groups that meet here for knitting, gardening, book discussions, and we even host Shakespearean plays on occasion.

The Niles Free Bus system is available at no charge and operates within the village with stops at major shopping centers and public facilities, including Golf Mill, Dempster Plaza, Village Crossing, Civic Center Plaza, Niles-Maine District Library, and Niles Village Hall.

There are two Pulse lines operating in Niles. The Pulse Milwaukee Line operates on Milwaukee Avenue from Golf Mill to Jefferson Park Transit Center (also serviced by Pace Route 270) and the Pulse Dempster Line operates on Dempster Street between Evanston and O’Hare Airport (which is also serviced by Pace
Route 250).
