Each year, this guide reflects the heart of our community: people and businesses working together to
build a healthier, more connected Niles and Morton Grove. Whether you’re seeking trusted local
healthcare providers, fitness and wellness options, or community resources for every stage of life,
you’ll find them here, along with stories and insights that celebrate how wellness extends beyond

We’ve all been in situations that test our emotional strength. Depending on the individual and
season of life, they could take the form of a failing grade in school, a demotion or pink slip from an
employer, the end of a romantic relationship, a serious health issue, or any number of other crises that
may leave us emotionally fragile.
Fortunately, strategies exist to help us build our emotional resilience to rough patches. By looking
outward to help others, leaning on our connections to family and friends and, if necessary, seeking
professional help, we can avoid downheartedness and instead view life’s most difficult setbacks as
occasions for growth and self-improvement.
Support Groups
When enduring particularly difficult periods, individuals can feel as if they are the only ones
suffering. Support groups help them understand they are not alone.

isolated but offer secure settings where
they can share their struggles with others
going through hard times.
● Coping techniques, stress managemen skills and relaxation training are some of
the lessons imparted by many support
groups, all of which assist people in

Local counseling services
When being tested by life’s many challenges, people should not hesitate to seek the services

emotions and viewing challenges more optimistically.

Mental health & Mindfulness
Managing Stress and Anxiety
If you’re among those who suffer from stress and anxiety, you’re far from alone. Across the
globe, more than 359 million people suffered anxiety disorders as of 2021. In this country, 19.1% have
endured an anxiety disorder in the past 12 months. Over the course of their lifetimes, almost one-third
of Americans (31.1%) will experience one. A number of concerns may trigger a stress or anxiety
experience, among them health care, the economy, gun violence and current events such as a major U.S.
election.
Last year, we focused on managing stress by maintaining a robust social network. However, there exist a
number of other ways to proactively deal with stress and anxiety. Among the best are maintaining a
healthy diet, exercising regularly and gaining enough sleep, along with specific stress-busting actions
like meditation, deep breathing and mindfulness. Taking up a hobby, bringing greater organization to
your life and being able to pinpoint and sidestep your own distinctive stress triggers are also
keys.
Eating healthy diet
Maintaining a well-balanced, nutrient-rich diet of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins and
fatty fish enables people to consume nutrients that are effective in reining in stress hormones and
reinforcing essential brain function.
Getting regular exercise
When you exercise, your body releases endorphins. These powerful and positive chemicals are
humans’ natural stress relievers. Exercise also reduces the levels of cortisol and other stress
hormones. As well, it leads to deeper, more beneficial sleep, which in itself can contribute to
reduction of stress and anxiety.
Meditation
In recent years, meditation has gained increased attention as a means of combatting stress and anxiety.
Meditation helps users relax and remain calm, helping trim the mental and physical symptoms of anxiety.
By concentrating attention on the present moment rather than the past or future, meditation helps people
break the negative feedback loop of apprehension and self-judgment common to anxiety sufferers.
Deep breathing
Deep breathing shifts people from their innate “fight-or-flight response” into a state of
“rest and digest.” The use of deep breathing helps them bring about their bodies’
natural relaxation response. Heart rate is reduced, blood pressure lowered, and muscle tension released.
Many of those who experience stress and anxiety find their minds racing with anxious thoughts, and deep
breathing calms these disquieting sentiments.
Other ways
Myriad alternative means of managing stress and anxiety are available to sufferers.
One is taking up a hobby or two, preferably alongside those who also enjoy the activity.
The act of writing in a journal is another good way of managing stress, because it helps the journaling
individual get a better grasp on his or her feelings. Improved organization can also assist people in
more effectively managing time, and by extension, stress.
Mindfulness Practices or Everyday Life
Checking your phone, running through a mental to-do list, or rushing through your morning routine.
Sound familiar? It’s how many of us start the day. But there might be a better way.
Mindfulness is simply the practice of paying attention to what you’re doing, feeling and
experiencing in the present moment. It’s not about clearing your mind or meditating for hours;
it’s about noticing your life as it’s happening. Research shows that even brief moments of
awareness can lower stress, improve focus and make daily life feel more intentional.
You don’t need a meditation cushion or a quiet mountain view to be mindful. The real opportunity
lies in the ordinary moments that fill your day. Try starting with a few simple shifts:
Morning reset: Before you reach for your phone, take three slow breaths. Notice how your body feels as
you wake up. Even 30 seconds of calm can set the tone for the day.
Mindful meals: Instead of eating at your desk or in front of a screen, give your food a moment of
attention. Notice the colors, textures and flavors. It’s surprising how grounding a quiet meal can
be.
Pause in motion: Whether you’re driving, walking or waiting in line, take one mindful breath.
Feel your feet on the ground or your hands on the steering wheel. Ordinary pauses like these add up.
Evening unwind: When the day ends, resist the urge to scroll. Take a minute to reflect on one thing
that went well. Gratitude is mindfulness in disguise. It brings your attention back to the present.
If mindfulness feels out of reach, you’re not alone. Most people think they need to empty their
minds or sit perfectly still. The truth is, it’s more about noticing than mastering. You
can’t do it wrong, you just start again, each time you remember. Even half a minute of awareness
is progress.
You don’t have to overhaul your routine or find extra hours in the day. Just bring a little
attention to the moments you already live — your morning coffee, a walk to the car, the first deep
breath after work. Over time, those small pauses add up to a quieter mind and a steadier day.
When you slow down enough to notice your life, you may find it’s been waiting for you all

Easy Ways to Add Fitness to Your Day

Some people believe they must join a fitness center or acquire expensive home gyms to incorporate
movement into their days. Actually, nothing could be further from the truth. You could opt to do seated
exercises like lean-backs, take a brief walk rather than settling for a nap, or park farther from a
store or eatery to add steps to your day.
Over time, as you weave these elementary changes into your daily routine, they are likely to become a
positive habit, one that will not only improve your health and fitness but could spark larger changes
that can foster dramatic improvements in well-being.
“Instead of just meeting friends for lunch, go for a walk and then go to lunch,” says
Danielle Desherow, fitness and group exercise coordinator at Niles Family Fitness Center in Niles.
“Where you encounter stairs, choose the stairs as opposed to an elevator or escalator. Or you can
hold a meeting during a walk. Last night, we were watching TV at home, and I said let’s stand up
and march in place, do air squats or do some stretching. Another idea is to get up and do something. Get
up and get a glass of water, or put the laundry in the washer, just so you’re not sitting for an
hour at a time.”
Here are a few additional ways to weave movement into your daily routine in such a way that you wind up
benefitting from greater levels of activity day in and day out.
● If you are tied to a desk job, don’t assume you have to sit at all times. Set
a timer for every hour to remind yourself to rise and do some light stretching or walking for even a few
minutes. Or keep resistance tubing or resistance bands at your desk to enable you to undertake a bit of
strength work in your office or cubicle.
● To prevent yourself from settling into a chair
for long periods, switch to a standing desk
or better yet, a standing desk with a portable
treadmill beneath.
● Make a list of the activities you enjoy, whether
cycling, dancing, gardening, walking or
others, then enlist family or friends to savor
these actions with you. The mix of activity
and socialization can make them much more
enjoyable.
● Rather than driving, walking or bicycling to
the store, post office or to take care of
errands. Make the activity more beneficial by
placing a couple heavier books in a backpack
and wearing it as you walk or bike. That
makes for a workout that generates greater benefit for the legs and heart.
These represent just a start on the ways you can add fitness to your day, and thereby add healthy days
to your life. .

Fitness For ALL AGES
Regardless of their fitness levels, athletic abilities or ages, every person can benefit from daily
exercise. Fortunately, in Niles and Morton Grove, abundant opportunities exist to exercise in a variety
of ways, from swimming to Zumba classes.
In Niles, the Niles Family Fitness Center offers so many opportunities for fitness they are almost too
numerous to list, says Danielle Desherow, fitness and group exercise coordinator for the center. These
include a state-of-the-art fitness center with top-shelf cardio and strength equipment; group fitness
classes; an indoor pool with lap pool, 100-foot waterslide, zero-depth entry pool, whirlpool and sauna,
and aquatics classes; an indoor track for running, walking or jogging; and a gymnasium for basketball
and volleyball.
It’s important to recognize these exercise opportunities are there for everyone, no matter their
age, skill level or interest, and range from water walking up to water aerobics or
“aquasize” and high-intensity spinning classes. “We have pickleball games open to
everyone and just started pickleball classes,” Desherow says. “We have a lot of classes here
that really range in levels, from a standing stretch class for those who don’t want to get down on
the ground, to higher-intensity classes like spinning classes or high-intensity interval classes. Even
within classes, such as the Body Flex class I teach, there can be adaptations. For instance, some people
will lift heavier weights, some lighter weights. We adapt to many [fitness] levels, and many levels can
benefit.”

Morton Grove residents will find no shortage of fitness opportunities in their village, either. Inside
Morton Grove’s Prairie View Community Center is Club Fitness, a facility that incorporates a

What Did Our Parents Say?
GO OUT AND PLAY!
We’ve all heard it “turn off the screen and go outside”. Good advice now as it was
for earlier generations when the screen was porthole sized black and white television and not the latest
Apple or Android device we all carry around these days. But what are the benefits getting out into
nature, or at least outside, and what can we do once we’re all out there? These are good
questions, and hopefully this article may offer some insights on how you can answer those questions to
improve your health.
So where do we go once the screen is dark? In the Morton Grove and Niles communities (and those that
surround us) we have gyms (public and private), yoga studios, recreation centers, community sports
programs, park districts, forest preserves, bicycle clubs and more.
But before we explore some of these options, let’s share the benefits. Going outside instead of
using screens offers significant health benefits, including improved physical health from activity,
better mood and social connections, and the opportunity to explore. Limiting screen time is crucial for
a child’s development, with organizations like the World Health Organization recommending more
active play and less sedentary time for young children. To do this, set screen-free times or zones, lead
by example and replace some recreational screen time with outdoor activities. Older children and later
adults will become more used to being out if they embrace the concept early in life.
One of the best places to get away from the screen is our local park districts. In any weather, the
Morton Grove and Niles Park Districts provide options to play sports, exercise, learn, dance and more.
Local, informed and friendly staff are there to make your experience a great one. Beyond our public
facilities, many commercial enterprises offer training in yoga, pilates and more. Recreation centers
will focus on offering things to do for larger groups. In many communities, there will be clubs for
baseball or softball, bowling and other team sports. Like to ride? A bicycle club can let you do it with
a group or our many bike trails that run through the villages (often adjacent to running tracks) let you
get out and go fast while improving your health.
So what do you do now? That’s easy, just turn off that screen and seek out one of the many places
where you can go and get away from the little screen to see a bigger (and healthier) world.
The health benefits of being outside are many, but a short list is composed of:
Improving physical health: Just moving makes the body feel and operate better and reduces the
sedentary nature of screen time.
Improves your mood: A little sun and fresh air combined with an activity will clear out the
cobwebs in our minds that grow reading all we see online.
Socially connected: The power key opens up our ability to see people face to face and better learn how to react with our family, friends, neighbors and co-workers.

Brain Health, Memory AND COGNITIVE FITNESS

As individuals age, they increasingly value brain health and fear the possibility of cognitive decline.
But many aren’t aware they can take positive steps starting at younger ages to help ensure their
brains stay sharp, their memory remains strong and their cognitive fitness continues to be all it can
be. The keys to achieving these goals are getting quality sleep, eating a nutritious diet, seizing
opportunities for social engagement, tackling mental challenges and routinely engaging in physical
fitness.
SENIOR CENTERS
Among the institutions that can help older people maintain their cognitive abilities are senior
centers, which can be found in virtually any good-sized community. Your local senior center offers an
array of activities, classes and programs designed to prolong mental, social and emotional health. For
instance, many senior centers provide classes in such topics as computer skills, mastery of foreign
languages and history. There, seniors can take part in memory-enhancing games and work brain-bettering
puzzles. Seniors may even be able to hone skills they never had time to develop before, like playing a
musical instrument, creating paintings or sculpture or writing short stories.
All these resources available at senior centers can help older adults remain mentally sharp. But even
if they simply frequent their neighborhood senior centers to meet other people and enjoy meals together,
older adults are doing much to combat social isolation’s mental and physical harm, to which too
many senior citizens fall victim.
ADULT FITNESS PROGRAMS
Some people are inclined to separate mental and physical health, as though if you have one form of
health, you can’t have the other. In fact, physical fitness is inextricably tied to brain
function. Adult fitness programs deliver a bounty of brain-boosting blessings, hiking blood flow and
positive brain chemicals and enhancing thinking and memory.
Walking, jogging, bicycling and dancing all increase blood flow to the brain, providing this crucial
organ with oxygen and nutrients. Lifting weights and other resistance exercises have been shown to
prevent brain shrinkage in older adults. Yoga and Tai Chi can enhance seniors’ multi-tasking
abilities, as well as their verbal memory. Finally, seniors can combine the many beneficial advantages
of both socializing and exercising by scheduling group walks with fitness-minded family members or
friends.
CAREGIVER NETWORKS
Both those receiving care and their caregivers reap a bonanza of brain benefit through caregiver
networks. Caregivers and the people for whom they care may take part together in memory games, puzzles
or music therapy, all of which are proven to aid memory, attention and verbal fluency. In addition, the
social interaction caregiving requires results in both the cared-for and the caregiver gaining cognitive
benefits from robust social connections and a sense of emotional well-being.
Clearly, community resources are available to help ensure declines in cognitive health and memory as our health is not a fait accompli. In fact, with the right steps, fears of brain drain can just as readily be reversed and turned into brain gains.

THE SHARED JOURNEY TO LIFELONG HEALTH
If your family group chat includes everything from baby photos to reminders about Dad’s next
doctor appointment, you already know that wellness can be a multigenerational project. Families today
are finding that health does not live in silos; it is shared in routines, in caregiving and in the
gentle accountability that comes from loving someone across generations.
When we think of wellness, we tend to picture individual habits such as diet, exercise or mindfulness.
But increasingly, researchers and communities are emphasizing intergenerational wellness, the idea that
the emotional, physical and social health of each family member strengthens the others. Children thrive
when they feel connected to grandparents. Older adults stay active and purposeful when engaged in the
lives of younger generations. And caregivers, though often stretched thin, gain resilience and meaning
through those daily acts of support.
Research continues to affirm what families have long known instinctively: connection is medicine. The
National Institute on Aging links strong family ties to lower blood pressure, reduced depression and
longer life expectancy. But beyond the data, there is the everyday alchemy of togetherness found in
laughter over dinner, shared errands or the simple feeling that someone has your back. These moments
build emotional resilience across all ages. Children gain stability and a sense of belonging, adults
feel anchored in purpose and older generations stay mentally sharper and more engaged.
That bond becomes even more crucial when caregiving enters the picture. Today, roughly one in five
adults in the United States provides unpaid care for a loved one, often while juggling work and raising
children. It is an act of love that can take a toll without adequate support. Creating a caregiving plan
helps: dividing tasks among family members, using technology to coordinate appointments and accepting
help from community resources or faith-based programs. Caregivers need care, too. Even brief breaks for
rest or social time can prevent burnout and restore patience.
When families approach wellness as a shared journey through caregiving, grandparenting or simply
showing up for one another, health becomes a collective strength. Every generation benefits when
compassion flows both ways, turning ordinary moments into lasting vitality.

Connecting Generations IS MORE THAN GENEOLOGY
Charting your genealogy to learn who you are and where you came from is very popular. Television shows
delve deep into our past family DNA and records over many decades, even centuries, to let us know where
we came from. But for most of our lives, the way we learned about the past was to simply ask questions
of our parents, grandparents and other relatives. The family units were closer physically than now so
looking in on grandma was a trip down the block, not across the continent. These days, technology can
keep us better connected. But even in days gone by, a simple phone call or letter in the mail allowed us
to be connected just like a snap chat or text can do now. It is not about the tech, it is more about the
desire to keep our families closer. The closer we are, the better we can look in on our families to make
sure we’re leading our best lives, physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally.
Family Caregiving is not new. In fact for most of human history we find that multi generations lived
together and learned from each other. With the world a smaller place due to ease of transportation and
communications tech, the physical aspect of that caregiving has changed. We must strive to promote
intergenerational connectivity. New programs where multiple generations can be together in pursuit of
common fun. Dining out is one, but taking a cooking class to preserve family recipes is better. Each
generation shares their knowledge and talents (and family stories). Seek out courses at the library or
park district. Perhaps even our local townships offer programs like community gardens. The key is to
include everyone you can at whatever level they feel comfortable participating.
Sometimes as we age, it becomes harder as those we love are more physically challenged. Here, we must
also be sure to look after the caregivers. Be sure they get the extra support they need to keep being
the glue that binds several generations. Sometimes all they need is another person in their family to
listen and offer words of comfort. Other times, it might be stepping up to take some weight off their
shoulders. Be a keen observer of their needs. Many times they won’t ask for help, but will surely
be happy that you offered it. Sometimes this help comes from care and assisted living facilities. Look
for the helpers in whatever community you and your family are in; they are there for a purpose.
A final thought. Families don’t always have to be blood related. Many times the strongest relationships we have are those from our chosen families. These could be people from school, work, a club or assembled over time and care and support from those whom you’ve met along the way. No matter the makeup, accepting the experience of those older than you while learning something new and passing along that accumulated knowledge will make everyone healthier in so many ways.

If you’ve ever hit an afternoon slump and wondered whether it’s your age or your lunch to
blame, you’re not alone. Energy and nutrition are more closely linked than most of us realize. As
we age, our metabolism shifts, muscle mass naturally declines, and what we eat starts to play an even
larger role in how we feel from morning to night. The good news is that small, thoughtful changes in
your daily diet can make a noticeable difference in both stamina and spirit.
THE CHANGING ENERGY EQUATION
Many people chalk up fatigue to getting older, but the real culprit is often the body’s evolving
energy needs. With age, we burn calories more slowly and absorb nutrients differently. That means
skipping meals or relying on quick carbs for a boost can backfire, leading to energy spikes and crashes.

Staying Active and ENGAGED ACROSS DECADES

Mounting evidence suggests remaining physically active and socially engaged are two crucial keys to
health and longevity. A number of Niles and Morton Grove residents have identified ways to blend those
two initiatives in fun ways at Niles Family Fitness Center.
We’ve long known physical activity helps people remain physically and mentally healthy later in
life. But a recent study confirms socialization is also a key to achieving a long, healthy life.
Researchers at Northwestern University have for a quarter century studied ”SuperAgers”
– people 80 and older with the cognitive function of average middle-aged adults – and found
they all appear to have several important traits in common. The most important: They enjoy socializing
with others and have outgoing personalities.
The study, which has been published in the medical journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia, revealed
SuperAgers experience less “brain thinning” as they grow older. They also suffer fewer
changes in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s Disease. This is leading to recommendations that
senior citizens make every effort to remain social as they grow older. One upshot: Senior housing is
being redesigned to encourage older folks to come together in common areas and dining rooms, instead of
isolating in their apartments.
The evidence is such that researchers can now assert with confidence that social isolation is as bad
for health as smoking, and healthy social linkages are important to achieving better heart health and
neurological health, as well as lower dementia risk.
SOCIAL MOVEMENT
Danielle Desherow, fitness and group exercise coordinator for the Niles Family Fitness Center, sees
people from ages 60 to 90 each day at the center, and says no one would be able to guess their ages
based on the wonderful way they move. “Seniors here really do challenge themselves,” she
says. “They’re stretching, they’re balancing and they’re exercising . . . I see
ladies in walkers who come in, change into their bathing suits and do water walking. For some people
that takes a lot of effort. But they do it because they know how important it is to stay well. And I
hear them say when they’re in the water they don’t feel pain, because the water is so gentle
on their joints.”
They don’t miss the opportunity to socialize, either. When participants come together for
exercise classes, they talk before and after the instruction. “And now I found out once a month
they meet for lunch!” Desherow marvels. “They were not friends before they came here, and
they’re all ages. It’s a true testament that they are not only coming together in classes,
but getting together outside the classes.”
Perhaps they instinctively know exercise and socializing, often together, will keep them living longer, healthier lives.
Community & Social Well Being
No Need To Be Alone OR LONELY
A community plays an important role in combating loneliness and fosters improved social wellbeing. This
is accomplished by programs and activities that are inclusive, use shared spaces and work with
supportive policies that all combine to create that important sense of belonging.

Intergenerational Programs - Look for programs where youth are teaching tech skills to
seniors. Find where experienced business leaders are sharing with young entrepreneurs.
Volunteer Programs - We all need a little help now and then, but being a help offers
so much more. Our food pantries, libraries, faith-based organizations and many local groups are always
in need of someone to step to the plate and take a swing at being a volunteer.
Support Groups - Find in person and online options for organizations that need to
reach out to people or be there when someone needs our help.
Arts and Culture - Creative projects and cultural activities serve as drivers of
social cohesion, providing avenues for self-expression and shared experiences that strengthen community
bonds. The world would be better with more art, music and culture to keep us all connected.
Accessible Transportation - Ensuring safe, affordable and accessible transportation
options allows people, particularly seniors, to travel independently and participate in social
activities and access critical resources. They can’t participate if they can’t get
there.
Strong community connections provide emotional support and intellectual stimulation, which are
essential for overall health and well-being. Studies show that being socially connected can:

● Improve immune function and stress responses.
● Lower the risk of depression and enhance emotional resilience.

The Importance of Adding Fitness to Your Day
Staying physically active and socially engaged from our early childhood through all the decades or our
lives build us a solid foundation to age in a healthy way by contributing to our longevity, physical and
mental wellbeing and, most importantly, our quality of life.
Across our decades of life on this planet, being consistent is a primary goal. If you start an active
life early you build that foundation for better times later in life. But just like saving money for the
future, it is never too late; but the earlier you start, the better. Is it mind over matter or matter
over mind? Either way, your mind and spirit have to be motivated to get your body moving along the path
to better health.
So, if we convince our minds to take the body out for a spin, then we can better maintain muscle mass
and bone density. We can improve cardiovascular health. Managing weight will make it easy to move around
and reduce the risk of exacerbating chronic conditions like heart disease, strokes, diabetes and many
forms of cancer. On top of it all, you may lessen the need for a number of expensive drugs to manage
these conditions, putting some money back in your pocket.
Some people believe they must join a fitness center or acquire expensive home gyms to incorporate
movement into their days. Actually, nothing could be further from the truth. You could opt to do seated
exercises like lean-backs, take a brief walk rather than settling for a nap, or park farther from a
store or eatery to add steps to your day.
Over time, as you weave these elementary changes into your daily routine, they are likely to become a
positive habit, one that will not only improve your health and fitness but could spark larger changes
that can foster dramatic improvements in well-being.
“Instead of just meeting friends for lunch, go for a walk and then go to lunch,” says
Danielle Desherow, fitness and group exercise coordinator at Niles Family Fitness Center in Niles.
“Where you encounter stairs, choose the stairs as opposed to an elevator or escalator. Or you can
hold a meeting during a walk. Last night, we were watching TV at home, and I said let’s stand up
and march in place, do air squats or do some stretching. Another idea is to get up and do something. Get
up and get a glass of water, or put the laundry in the washer, just so you’re not sitting for an
hour at a time.”
Are you as sharp as you used to be? As time goes on, the storage capacity of our brains fills up with
exponentially increasing amounts of information. Healthy exercise will increase the brain’s blood
flow which helps with cognition, memory and abstract thinking skills. Stress can be
well…STRESSFUL. As the brain releases endorphins, your anxieties and possible depression and bad
moods might just improve, along with your self-esteem and ability to take on the challenges we face
every morning as we face the world.
What’s the purpose of being mentally and physically on top of our game if we don’t share
with others in our lives? Get out and meet friends for breakfast or lunch. Take your dog to the dog
park. Join a club or group to share an activity, anything from painting toy soldiers and models to chess
in the park or bowling and maybe even that very popular activity, pickleball.
With all the forms of modern communication at hand, there’s no need to be lonely. There are times
when we want to be alone, but that is a choice to escape for a bit and recharge your batteries. But
loneliness is a path to cognitive decline. Stay alert, involved and pick up a paddle or a paint brush
and do something with others. Once you do, you will experience the camaraderie of shared enjoyment with
whatever activities you choose to participate in. Get involved with helping others come out of their
isolations and improve their lives, too. You can be retired, but don’t be retiring. Get out and
have some fun.
KEEP MOVING
Here are a few additional ways to weave movement into your daily routine in such a way that you wind up
benefitting from greater levels of activity day in and day out.
• If you are tied to a desk job, don’t assume you have to sit at all times. Set a timer for
every hour to remind yourself to rise and do some light stretching or walking for even a few minutes. Or
keep resistance tubing or resistance bands at your desk to enable you to undertake a bit of strength
work in your office or cubicle.
• To prevent yourself from settling into a chair for long periods, switch to a standing desk or
better yet, a standing desk with a portable treadmill beneath.
• Make a list of the activities you enjoy, whether cycling, dancing, gardening, walking or others,
then enlist family or friends to savor these actions with you. The mix of activity and socialization can
make them much more enjoyable.
• Rather than driving, walk or bicycle to the store, post office or to take care of errands. Make the activity more beneficial by placing a couple heavier books in a backpack and wearing it as you walk or bike. That makes for a workout that generates greater benefit for the legs and heart.
Across Niles and Morton Grove, inspirational stories are being recounted about the benefits of
enhancing wellness by making movement a regular part of individuals’ lives. Here, two local
residents discuss their journeys to wellness.
ALLEVIATING BACK PAIN
Niles resident B.J. Tregoning suffered from substantial back pain up to six to 10 times a year as a
result of having experienced a slipped disk. Told by doctors he was too young for surgery and needed to
strengthen his core, he sought out Pilates instruction through Niles Family Fitness Center.
He took private lessons from exercise coordinator Danielle Desherow, then began group lessons. As soon
as he began two-times-a-week sessions, his back pain was reduced. Today, after two years of Pilates, the
pain is all but gone.
COMBATING PRE-DIABETES
Equally inspirational is the story of Michael Trevino, previous teen center coordinator at the Niles
Teen Center in Golf Mill Mall and current Executive Pastor of Ministries at CityLine Bible Church in
Niles. Diagnosed with pre-diabetes, Trevino was told by medical professionals he would have to go on
medication. He responded by asserting he would try to change his lifestyle instead. He began visiting
the Niles Family Fitness Center in October 2024. “I talked to the staff there, asking them
questions,” he recalls. “I started swimming, using the treadmill, lifting weights and riding
the stationary bike. I also changed my diet. The doctor wanted me to come back in January 2025, and when
I did I’d lost 30 pounds and my blood work indicated all my numbers were normal. The doctor said
just keep doing what you’re doing, and there’ll be no need for medication.”
On October 8, 2025, he celebrated one year from the pre-diabetes diagnosis, he says.
Also celebrated that day was his 60-pound weight loss over the previous 12 months. He now has signed up
for the Chicago Triathlon, or “Supertri,” to be staged in August of 2026. “People are
very proud, very inspired,” Trevino says. “The staff at the teen center have all lost weight
and are working out more, and my wife has dropped 25 pounds since June. At the teen center, they have a
thing called Fitness Friday and are incorporating fitness at the teen center as well.”
Taking On Cancer Side Effects
Wellness in Action can also mean undertaking actions that help others regain wellness. Christine
Pusateri, owner of Christine Pusateri Hair Solutions on Milwaukee Ave, focuses on men’s and
women’s hair replacement. For the past 15 years, she has taken the knowledge she has gained in
that business and channeled it into helping cancer patients through her “Look Good Feel
Better” classes at Lutheran General Hospital.
The American Cancer Society makes one wig available to each cancer patient. Pusateri thins and cuts the
wigs free of charge and helps patients understand how to take off and wash their wigs. “My mother
died of cancer back in the 1960s,” she says. “This is my way of giving back to my mother,
because I was a child then and couldn’t help her. Every person’s cancer journey is
different. It can be devastating for them, but for me it’s one thing, however small, I can do for
people.”
