Celebrating Community and History
The New Bern Historical Society’s Annual Heritage Homes Tour
Each spring, history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and community members gather in
New Bern for one of the most anticipated cultural traditions in the region — the Heritage
Homes Tour, hosted annually by the New Bern Historical Society.
Scheduled for May 1-2, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., this beloved
event offers a rare opportunity to explore some of New Bern’s most remarkable historic residences
and learn the stories that make them unique.
A self-guided journey through history
Unlike many tours, the Heritage Homes Tour is self-guided, allowing attendees to tour at their own
pace. Participants receive a map with numbered sites, enabling them to start anywhere and visit each
home in any order. Docents stationed in each house share insights into the history, architecture and
personal stories associated with the property.
The 2026 tour spans the Downtown and Riverside Historic Districts,
showcasing a diverse range of residences. In recognition of America’s 250th Celebration, the
featured downtown residences are some of the area’s oldest, dating back to the 1700s. These are
private family homes that are not normally open to the public, making this a rare
chance to see some of the city’s hidden historical treasures.
More than just homes
Beyond architecture, the Heritage Homes Tour is a feast for the senses. Attendees can enjoy:
● Creative floral arrangements displayed throughout the
tour.
● Live music in various locations that enhance the festive atmosphere.
● Gardens in bloom and local artisans at work.
● Visits to historic churches open especially for the tour.
This blend of history, culture and community spirit has made the tour much more than a house-viewing
event — it’s become a celebration of New Bern’s heritage and vitality.
Tickets and participation
Tickets, which include the tour map, are required for entry and are available in advance as well as
during the event. Prices vary by category, with discounts for Historical Society members, active-duty
military and families, students and larger groups. Tickets are good for both days of
the tour, though each home may be visited only once per ticket.
To pick up paper tickets (which include the walking/driving map), participants can visit the Historical
Society office at 511 Broad St. in New Bern. Advance purchase at www.newbernhistorical.org and early pickup are
recommended, as the event often draws large crowds.
A tradition that connects past and present
The Heritage Homes Tour has been a highlight of the Historical Society’s annual calendar for many
years, drawing residents and visitors to explore the rich architectural and cultural fabric of New Bern.
It reflects the city’s deep history — from early colonial settlement through modern
preservation efforts — and fosters a greater appreciation for the people and places that have
shaped this historic community.
For many, the tour is more than an event: it’s an annual reminder of how history lives on in the
homes and stories of everyday people — and how vital such traditions are to preserving the
character and legacy of New Bern for generations to come.
