WELCOME

Welcome to Muskego and its surrounding communities of Big Bend, Town of Norway and Wind Lake. The Muskego Area Chamber of Commerce services businesses and organizations in these communities. Vibrant friendships, beautiful natural resources and tight-knit neighborhoods fill this area to provide a mix of rural and suburban living. Scattered among the lakes, rivers and nature areas, one will find local business hubs and thriving residential neighborhoods. The Chamber’s vision is to create an atmosphere where these businesses flourish and our communities are enhanced.

Located on Janesville Road, the Muskego Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit association dedicated to promoting business and economic development in the Muskego area. It serves the Muskego, Big Bend, Town of Norway and Wind Lake area, partnering with other community organizations and citizens to create prosperity and vibrancy within our communities. Welcome to the City of Muskego and this wonderful information resource – the Muskego Area Chamber of Commerce Community Guide. You will notice while paging through this guide, Muskego is a great place to live, learn, work and play.

The area has abundant natural resources that provide a variety of recreation opportunities – from our numerous lakes, each with its own unique ecosystem that lends itself to different activities, such as water sports, fishing and hunting to various nature preserves that provide great hiking and viewing opportunities. Our parks are always active with baseball, softball, football, rugby and skateboarding, as well as picnicking, exercising and relaxing.

There are a variety of restaurants and bars providing food and drink for all tastes and budgets. Shopping opportunities range from national chains to local boutiques and service businesses include salons, spas and barbers. Convenient services for automotive, electrical, plumbing, landscaping, accounting, real estate, health care and insurance can all be found locally as well.

If schools are important to you, the Muskego-Norway School district is one of the top districts in the State of Wisconsin. If you prefer private education, you have various excellent options for private 4K through eighth-grade schools as well.

All these wonderful options are made complete with a wide variety of housing stock, close proximity to downtown Milwaukee, small-town feel, a low crime rate and one of the lowest tax rates of any city in southeastern Wisconsin, while offering excellent services.

Town of Norway Welcome

The Town of Norway was established in 1847 by Norwegian pioneers. Wind Lake, Waubeesee Lake and Long Lake provide great summer and winter activities for its 8,000 residents. Agriculture is an important part of our economy, and the town has one of the largest concentrations of sod farms in the Midwest.

Norway Industrial Park, several restaurants and businesses, an indoor archery range and the Spirits of Norway winery complete our business landscape. Beautiful Racine County Colonel Heg Park is located across from the town hall. Adjoining the town hall grounds is Meyer Park, a 22-acre town park containing a barn and two shelters available for rent. Hundreds of young people play baseball and other sports throughout the year in the park. In late summer/early fall, the business community sponsors a wonderful community picnic for all to enjoy.

The Norway Town Board is proud to have the lowest municipal tax rate in the County of Racine, has a very comprehensive recreation program, and enjoys working with adjoining communities to share ideas and services whenever possible. Jan 27: Muskego Chamber’s Networking Lunch & Annual Membership Meeting: 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Business owners and representatives are encouraged to attend this annual meeting to celebrate the successes from the previous year. Jan 31: Wind Lake Fireworks 9th Annual Ice Fishing Jamboree: The ice fishing jamboree includes basket raffles, meat raffles, 50/50 raffles, and over $2,000 in cash prizes. Held at Sportsmans Pub & Grub, 25313 W Loomis Rd, Wind Lake. The fundraiser is for the annual summer fireworks display.

Jul 3: Muskego’s Independence Day Celebration: Presented by the Water Bugs Ski Team in association with Little Muskego Lake District. Idle Isle is closed to all public launches the entire day and the park does not open until 3:00 p.m. Celebration includes food, beverages, and family fun from 3:00 until evening, a water ski show at 6:00 p.m. and fireworks at dusk. Fireworks are launched from a barge on Little Lake Muskego. No on-site parking and limited parking on city streets surrounding the park. Parking is available at Park Arthur, S63 W17833 College Ave (A parking fee applies and goes toward the Water Bugs Ski Team for organizing the event.) A free shuttle is available between the two parks. Parking and arrival will be directed, and a map is available on the website. Muskego Woman’s Club Safety City: Kids ages 4-7 can enroll in a fun, safety awareness program held each August. Sponsored by Muskego Woman’s Club, Muskego Police Department, Muskego Parks and Recreation Department, St. Paul’s Lutheran School and the Muskego-Norway School District, this program covers all aspects of safety, including road and pedestrian safety, fire protection, poison prevention, animal safety and stranger awareness. Neighborhood

Guests and new residents will find Muskego to be a friendly, safe, community-minded place. History

Muskego

Muskego’s three lakes, large forests and abundant wildlife supported the large Potawatomi tribe. They named the area Mus-kee-Guaac, which means “marsh.” In 1827, the first European man arrived and established a trading post. Five years later, the Potawatomi ceded their lands in Wisconsin to the U.S. government. Despite being relocated, the Potawatomi continued to hunt and fish the Muskego lakes until the 1870s.

The Luther Parker family moved from New Hampshire in 1836 and established a settlement. Other immigrants followed and began five separate settlements in the town of Muskego: Yankees in Muskego Center, English in Durham Hill, Irish in Denoon, Germans in Tess Corners and Norwegians in Lake Denoon. Soon after, the first school and post office were established.

Muskego Settlement was the Norwegian settlement. It began in the southern part, which is now the Town of Norway. In 1839, 40 Norwegian pioneers arrived at Muskego Lake. These settlers flourished in the abundant land and encouraged numerous Norwegians to settle in the area.

Agriculture products were shipped by wagon from Muskego to Milwaukee on the “Janesville Plank Road.” This route provided easy access to Milwaukee for agricultural goods and offered city dwellers recreational opportunities and relaxing vacation in Muskego’s natural beauty.

In 1904, the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company opened a trolley line, allowing day trips to Muskego Lakes. Numerous resorts lined the shores of Little Muskego Lake. The trolley line closed in 1939, but the rise of automobiles allowed Muskego to be a recreation destination. Numerous family cottages, beaches and the Muskego Beach Amusement Park (1861-1967) – also known as DandiLion Park (1968-1977) – appeared on Little Lake.

Road improvements occurred in the 1920s. Routes such as Janesville and Loomis Roads encouraged both population and commerce growth. Industry moved to Muskego to escape the congestion and high taxes in Milwaukee.

Muskego incorporated as a city in 1964. The past 60-plus years offered advancements in business growth, establishment of civic organizations and the opportunity for this growing community to offer quality schools and community.

Big Bend

Aaron and Elvira Putnam settled near a “big bend” of the Fox River in 1837. Although the Potawatomi Indians camped by the river, white settlers had an establishment near the Milwaukee and Prairieville trails (now County Highway L and State Highway 164). Aaron’s family arrived between 1831 and 1846 to help him build the first sawmill, the inn at the corner of Nevins Street and post office.

In 1893, water from the Hygeia Spring #2 was sold at the Chicago World’s Fair for a penny per glass. The Village of Big Bend was incorporated in 1928.

Town of Norway & Wind Lake

In 1838, Thomas Drought traveled from Lower Canada seeking a new home in Wisconsin. His search brought him to 160 acres in what is now Norway Township. He was the first white man to settle in the area. The Drought Settlement grew in population when James Ash, Alfred Thompson and George Drought arrived between 1838 and 1839.

In 1839, Norwegian settler John Luraas led forty pioneers to the shores of Muskego Lake. This settlement brought the first organized Norwegian Lutheran congregation in America (1843) and the first Norwegian-American newspaper. Cabins were established around the marshes, only to be abandoned during the spring floods. The colony of Norwegians moved to the banks of Wind Lake but often frequented the beautiful Muskego lake filled with swarms of fish and the surrounding forests that offered abundance of game.

Fall 1840 saw a large group of immigrants arrive under the leadership of Evan Hansen Heg. He began a farm that became a trading post where colonists purchased supplies and received mail. His son, Hans Christian Heg, organized the first Norwegian Regiment, part of the 15th Wisconsin. He was the highest-ranking Wisconsin officer killed in the Civil War. Colonel Heg Park stands as a memorial for this brave settler and soldier.

Parks & Recreation

Muskego

Muskego boasts three lakes, 18 parks, 16 Little Muskego lake access points, 28 conservation sites and more than 30 miles of recreation trails. It offers valuable assets through its open spaces and dedication to preserving the area’s natural beauty.

Badertscher Preserve is a beautiful area with four miles of hiking trails and off-street parking. Its 104 acres of rolling glacial hills, wetlands and artesian springs are located on Field Drive.

Big Muskego Lake State Wildlife Area is located on the southern border and includes a 3,800-acre conservation site. With an average depth of three feet and approximately 2,260 acres of water to explore, the site provides fascinating opportunities to sportsmen and bird watchers. Bass Bay is a 100-acre offshoot of Big Muskego Lake, offering fishing and hunting opportunities.

Engel Conservation consists of 155 acres offering outdoor education with upland woodlands, wetlands and prairie plantings. Located on Henneberry Drive, 67 acres are enrolled in the Natural Resources Conservation Service Wetlands Reserve Program. The area provides interpretive signage for self-guided nature walks, off-street parking and a portable restroom facility.

Lake Denoon offers a boat ramp, cattail island and water habitat for the rare Black Tern. Located in the southwest corner of Muskego, this lake covers 162 acres with an average depth of 18 feet.

Little Muskego Lake is our best-known lake. With an average depth of fourteen feet, the 506 acres of water allows fabulous fishing (largemouth bass, northern pike, walleye and panfish) and recreational use (boating, skiing, kayaking and sailing). Idle Isle Park features a swimming beach, fishing pier and concession stand with kayak/paddleboard rentals. This provides the perfect venue for community events such as July 3 Fireworks and the Muskego Water Bugs Ski Show performances held on summer Wednesday evenings.

City Trails meander through residential, farm and wooded areas with the main trail following the original path of the electric interurban railroad. Bikers and walkers can traverse the trail from the Village of Big Bend, through Muskego, and connect to the City of Franklin Hike and Bike Trail.

Muskego Water Bugs Show Ski Team
Little Muskego Lake boasts plenty of good times on Wednesday evenings throughout summer. The award-winning Water Bugs Ski Team performs a free 90-minutes show at 6:30 p.m. in front of Idle Isle Park. With an age range of 7 to 56, the 50-member team delights the crowd with family-oriented themes each year. The team focuses on proficiency – moving members from beginner skiers to experienced members who perform ski tricks. Special events occur throughout the season, including:

•  A July 3 show in conjunction with Muskego’s Independence celebration.

•  The Adaptive Skiing program where club member Peggy Moriarty directs the team as they teach disabled people how to water ski.

Big Bend

The Village Park is located along the Fox River and offers a beautiful setting for fishing, relaxing and recreation. The Big Bend-Vernon Lions Club handles the Floyd Swayze Memorial Center Hall, which is available to rent and seats up to 100 people. Playground equipment and parking available. Town of Norway & Wind Lake

Meyer Park is an 18-acre town park offering a beautiful venue for a variety of sports: diamonds for baseball, softball, T-ball, basketball hoops and soccer field. In addition, a hiking trail, sledding hill, playground and meadow gardens offer fabulous recreational areas. Racine County Colonel Heg Memorial Park is 20 acres dedicated to historical education. An 1830s log cabin and museum are staffed by the Wind Lake Historical Society and open on summer weekend afternoons. The park offers a sledding hill and a play area.
