Legends of Commerce Golf Outing
Golf outing
Perhaps the biggest chamber initiative each year is the Legends of Commerce Golf Outing, an outing and
awards banquet held on the first Thursday in June (June 5 this year) at Nemacolin Country Club, 3100
National Pike in Beallsville. For more than two decades, the chamber has offered championship-level golf
in a spectacular setting, crowned by the evening’s festive salute to local business luminaries.
For some 130 golfers and their guests, it’s an unforgettable day on a course designed by the
legendary Pete Dye and an evening celebrating summer and paying tribute to the people who make the Mon
Valley region an economic powerhouse.
“It’s our biggest event of the year,” said Leanna Spada, executive director of the
Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce. “We choose an honoree who is a member of the chamber and
who has been a legend in our community, usually a business owner, somebody who has given back to the
community, somebody who has created jobs, has really put their community first. And at our dinner, we do
a steak dinner at the event, with a speech on their achievements, and they are given an award for their
work.”
For the golfers, it’s a rare chance to play on one of the premier courses in North America. For
dinner attendees, it’s a sumptuous meal and the opportunity to rub elbows with fellow
businesspeople and to pay tribute to one of their own. And for the tournament’s honoree,
it’s a day to remember.
“Our honoree receives a free foursome, free advertising and promotion for their businesses, and
they are able to bring whomever they like,” Spada explained.
Magical Mystery Bus Tour
Catching the bus
From golf greens to the fresh greens of the holiday season, the Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce
has plenty of excitement in store for members and local businesses when the temperatures drop from the
80s to the 40s, 30s and below.
Kicking off the holiday season is the annual Love Local Mystery Bus Tour, which takes some 80 riders to
selected businesses within the chamber footprint on the first Saturday in November to kick off a
“Shop Small, Shop Local” season.
“The mystery is where we go for the day,” Spada said. “People sign up and pay,
waiting with anticipation to go on this bus tour. We start at 9 a.m. and go until around 5 p.m. And on
that day, we go from member to member businesses. It’s planned out ahead of time, where we go
— the chamber knows where we’re going, but the women and men that come on the tour do not
know, so it’s a surprise for them.”
The tour is a day of bargain shopping and a chance to raise awareness of the many shopping options
available in the area.
“It’s to showcase our Mon Valley and what we have to offer here,” Spada said.
“We go to places and boutiques to shop. We go to restaurants to eat. We go to wineries. And we
spend, on average, 20 to 40 minutes at each stop.”
Attendees also spend some of their holiday budgets taking advantage of special bargains that day, and
in the process, help the community by pumping money directly into the local economy.
“We average between $14,000 and $16,000 going back into the local economy in that one day,” Spada said. “This is the chamber’s way to promote and bring light to the advantages shopping small has.”

Rounding out the holidays and beyond
Rounding out the holiday season is the Mon Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas Party
Awards, also known as Celebrate the Season of Business Awards. These awards recognize businesses that
provide outstanding products and services, as well as nonprofit groups that contribute to the community.
The awards also recognize individuals for their career achievements and contributions to the community.
“It’s an awards event and we honor three different categories,” Spada said.
At last year’s event, the Excellence in Business Award went to Justin Forlini and the Forlini
family, owners of Armando’s Pizza in Charleroi. The Regional Service Award was presented to Rachel
Rotolo, site administrator of PA CareerLink-Mon Valley. And the Shining Star Award was received by
Ashley Seman, executive director of Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority.
“We’re working on an event that can encompass our businesses as well as their
families,” she said, “because we know the importance of community connections and our
chamber members are like family to our organization.”

Our chamber is dedicated to supporting and educating the local business community by providing valuable resources, insights, and growth opportunities. We offer monthly networking events where members can connect, collaborate, and showcase their businesses to a wider audience. The Chamber has also started a young professionals group called NexGen. This group is geared towards our younger members to help them foster connections with mentors and network with their peers.
