WELCOME 2025!
January is the perfect time to reflect on all we have achieved as a city during the past year. The list
of accomplishments is long as 2024 was a year full of improvements, progress, and growth. As we look to
a new year filled with new opportunities, new challenges and new ideas, we invite you to take a look
back with us to celebrate a “year well done.”
Our cover story this issue introduces you to Mission residents Pedro and Carolina Morales, the owners
of Quality Framing & Art on Johnson Drive. What began as a “side hustle” in 2016 quickly
became a booming business. Like many other small businesses in our community, the Moraleses weathered
the challenges of the pandemic, and I enjoyed learning about their determination and hard work. They
know and understand the framing projects entrusted to them are cherished mementos for their customers
and they approach each new project with a personal touch, creativity, and passion safeguarding these
items.
Alongside the achievements of our business community, 2024 saw significant investments in our public
assets, including updates to two of Mission’s outdoor parks. Water Works Park, which abuts the
grounds of Rushton Elementary School, saw the construction of a new playground, restrooms, a new
pavilion and an improved walking trail. The re-opening of Water Works Park was timed to coincide with
students returning to the new Rushton. Neighbors on the south end of town also welcomed new park
facilities in 2024 with the completion of Phase II of Mohawk Park along Lamar and 67th Street. I
encourage you to get out and visit both parks to experience all of the new amenities, features and fun
that can be had! Special thanks to the Governing Body and the hard work of our dedicated staff for their
vision and making these improvements happen with your support!
In addition to the improvements to Water Works Park, Rushton Elementary School students, staff and
families celebrated the completion of their brand-new elementary school just in time for the start of
the school year. Our feature story introduces you to some of Rushton’s students, along with fourth
grade teacher Yvonne Corpus, who grew up in Mission and attended Rushton herself as a child. The story
shares perspectives of what it was like to learn and teach in three separate buildings in the last two
years, the resiliency that built amongst the staff and students, and what makes the new building so
special. The story also features a kindergarten student and his parents who articulate the immense sense
of community that being a Rushton student, and Mission resident, bring. Thank you to Rushton’s
dedicated professionals and all of our Mission families who make Rushton sparkle.
This issue also shares highlights of The Lanes at Mission Bowl, the newly-opened multi-family project
on Martway east of Nall. We’re so pleased to feature this great new development in Mission and the
public-private partnership that brought it to fruition. Sunflower Development Group worked in
partnership with the City to design and build a project that incorporated both attainable housing and
sustainability components to offer new, high-quality housing options for Mission residents. The project,
built on the site of the former Mission Bowl, also incorporates some of the history and remnants of that
popular community gathering place.
Finally, in our “look back” feature, we revisit the history of the Powell Community Center.
The facility opened its doors to residents and visitors in 1999 and has enjoyed 25 years of success. I
think you’ll enjoy learning about the early accomplishments, the almost immediate expansion, and
how the vision of Mayor Sylvester Powell, Jr. continues to be reflected in the facility today.
I hope that 2025 brings growth, prosperity, comfort and positive change for each of you. As I continue
to transition into the role of mom to Mackenzie and return from maternity leave, I look forward to the
good work ahead of us in the New Year! May 2025 be even better than 2024!
-Sollie Flora, Mayor
