On behalf of the entire Milford Regional Chamber of Commerce team, I extend my warmest greetings and anticipation for what lies ahead in 2024.

Our commitment to fostering growth, embracing opportunities, and staunchly supporting our local businesses remains unwavering. Over this past year, we provided over 200 networking, event and educational opportunities for our members, a membership that is approaching 600 businesses of all sizes and industries across the Milford and West Haven regions. We produced 18 free concerts for the communities we serve and held more than 50 ribbon cuttings for our new member businesses. As we reflect on the achievements of the past and the challenges that have shaped us, it’s clear that the coming year is teeming with possibilities for advancement and success.

Our foremost priority lies in expanding our support for local businesses. These enterprises drive our economy and enrich the fabric of all the communities we serve. This year, our focus remains steadfast on empowering them with the tools, resources and educational platforms they need to thrive.

In line with this commitment, I’m thrilled to announce the relaunch of our “Lunch and Learn” series. This program, a cornerstone of enhanced small business education, is designed to equip our entrepreneurs and business owners with practical insights, strategies and expertise vital for navigating the dynamic landscape of commerce. We believe that by providing a platform for continuous learning and skill enhancement, we fortify our local businesses for sustainable growth and resilience.

Moreover, 2024 heralds a slew of new opportunities. We aim to expand our programming, curate innovative networking events, and forge strategic partnerships that amplify the visibility and viability of our local enterprises. Our objective is to create an ecosystem where businesses not only survive but thrive, where collaboration and innovation intersect to chart a prosperous future for all.

As your chamber, we are steadfastly dedicated to being your advocate, your ally and your partner in progress. Your success is our success, and together, we forge ahead into this year brimming with hope, enthusiasm and unwavering support.

The Chamber continues to grow, and we owe all our members a big thank you for helping us to make it happen. With this growth we have been able to expand our 2024 programming to include monthly Lunch and Learns, sponsored by Southern CT State University, quarterly Non-Profit symposiums, a fourth Leads Group in West Haven at the Breakwall, and many more exciting events in the planning stages.

We were able to continue our signature events as well; Fridays after Five, sponsored by Minella & Tramuta, Restaurant Week sponsored by TrinityPoint Wealth, Business after Hours and of course dozens of ribbon cuttings for all the new businesses in the region.

Membership in the chamber is more than just the events we do, and our members know that. The networking opportunities continue to be the reason our members stay engaged for so long. Making connections is my favorite part of this job. Watching people collaborate and create business partnerships and grow together is a wonderful thing to see and I take extraordinary joy in being a part of that.

I want everyone that reads this to know they can reach out to me with any questions that may arise as you do business in the region. I may not always have the answer, but I bet I know someone that does and that’s why we are here after all.

Who We Are

At the Milford Regional Chamber of Commerce, we actively engage with neighbors old and new in efforts to make our city better for everyone. For over a half a century, the Milford Regional Chamber of Commerce has served as the voice of the business community. Our goal is simple: We want to continue to improve the economic vitality of our city by fostering a climate of growth and success through the support, talent, and resources of our members. Recently, the Chamber has integrated with the West Haven Chamber, allowing us to represent the West Haven business community. Today, we serve a much broader and diverse group through advocacy, business and economic development, education and leadership.

We have the distinguished honor of welcoming businesses to our community with a special ribbon cutting ceremony. We also perform ceremonial ribbon cuttings for an already-established member’s expansion, re-branding, or new product unveiling. We bring the camera, official scissors, our enthusiastic ambassadors, and, of course, the ribbon!

Business After Hours is the premier networking event for business professionals. Hosted by businesses and member organizations throughout the year, BAH events provide an opportunity to network in a relaxed setting.

The Best of Milford Awards honors and celebrates the businesses that make up the fabric of our beloved community. We gratefully salute every Milford business nominated and encourage the community’s continued support of the establishments that make Milford home.

Milford Restaurant Week is a celebration of the area’s top restaurants through curated prix-fixe menus that showcase their chef’s greatest dishes. This event offers restaurants the opportunity to introduce the community and visitors to what they do best at a price that encourages dining out.

Who can join the Chamber of Commerce?

Any for profit and nonprofit business with any amount of employees and any person with local business connections may join the Chamber of Commerce.

Our member companies range in size, location and industry. Twenty percent of our membership is from outside of the Milford community as we do serve the greater Milford area.

Why should I join the Chamber?

Building solid relationships in the community is vital to sustaining and growing your business; the Chamber is here to help your business succeed. Through the Chamber, you will meet new contacts and gain new business leads at many of our events. The Chamber also acts as a referral service for the businesses and residents of our community through our Membership Directory in print and online and we receive many calls and stop-ins daily asking for business recommendations.

May I attend Chamber functions as a non-member?

Businesses who are interested in learning more about the Milford Regional Chamber are invited to attend two Members Only events in the course of a year. We welcome and encourage you to attend a Business After Hours (BAH), Business Seminar Series or other information session before joining the Chamber. Some events are open to the public, including our Annual BIC Golf Classic, Ribbon Cuttings, Mayoral Addresses, Legislative Breakfasts and other events.

What professional groups, councils and committees does the Chamber offer?

We have three leads groups that meet weekly to exchange business leads, a young professionals group called EPIC, a Business Committee, a Restaurant Week Committee and more. We also have a Health & Wellness Council and a Legislative Action Committee.

How much does it cost to join the Milford Regional Chamber of Commerce?

Do you offer payment plans for membership?

Kinship Glassworks thrives on connections.

I’m not doing it alone,” says Kinship Glassworks founder Christopher DeMott, whose 5,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art glass blowing studio, retail gallery and learning center in Milford is a magnet for both tourists and residents alike.

The word “kinship” in the studio’s name represents DeMott’s 30-year-journey in the craft, supported by friends and family and “a handful of folks who were clients that have become friends and family of the studio.” The self-taught craftsman has reached a point in his career where he can enjoy the fruits of his labors — running a business that thrives on sharing his art and forging personal connections.

He credits much of Kinship’s success to early influences — “a moral compass and strong work ethic” instilled by his father, encouragement in his craft from his college advisor at then-Franklin Pierce College in the 1980s, and mentorship from area glass blowers who gave him his first studio work. He paid his dues working and teaching at URBANGLASS, a public access studio in Brooklyn before opening his first studio in his home garage in 1996.

All those experiences paid off when he pulled together the resources to open Kinship in 2020. DeMott credits community support for Kinship’s successful launch despite COVID-19 restrictions.

“It was a big space with all new equipment. I invested every penny I had,” he said. “We blew glass for months with masks on.”

Feedback and attention were positive early on. Growth has been steady. “I’m extremely fortunate with how this has all turned out,” he said.

“Milford is a big tourist town with a rich artistic community,” DeMott said. “We like to get people into the studio and bring them to Milford. ‘Blown Away’ on Netflix has launched our artform into the mainstream as a competition show. It’s brought a lot of attention to our craft. As soon as the furnace door opens, you see the fire and you can’t not see it anymore.”

Ryan Furbush and Brian Cuzzocreo are key team members. “Ryan is my regular partner in crime. He’s here weekly and a big part of why we’re doing as well as we are,” DeMott said.

Furbush, who also trained at Franklin Pierce and Cuzzocreo, who first began working with hot glass at the University of Hawaii, both create pieces for sale in the gallery and teach Introductory Glassblowing Classes, Glass Experiences and Group Gatherings.

The Intro Classes focus on fundamentals, including safety, basic techniques, shapes, and skill-building. In a Glass Experience you choose a project, colors, and design, then work with the instructors to create it. Group Gatherings with catered food and bar service are also popular. “That’s where we have the most fun!”, says DeMott.

Clear glass is held in a furnace that runs at 2,150 degrees, 24-7, 11 months of the year. Molten glass must be handled quickly, and the results can be surprising, as the glass records the artist’s every movement as it cools.

“Sometimes it doesn’t matter what you are trying to make, the material does what it’s going to do. It’s always evolving. Where you start may not be exactly where you finish. There’s a lot that can happen in between,” DeMott said.

Items are cooled for 13 hours in the annealing oven, from 900 degrees to room temperature. Opening the annealer filled with colorful creations each morning “is like Christmas every day in the studio,” DeMott said.

He’s no less passionate about the other facets of running Kinship. “Not only is it an art form where I get to blow glass and be a teacher, but the business side allows me to, manage the studio, run the equipment and maintain the shop,” he said.

Looking ahead, DeMott said, “We’re just hoping to keep picking up speed like we have been. It’s taken a few years for us to get on everybody’s radar. It’s starting to happen.”

To accommodate growth, he’s hoping to add a second furnace, expand glassblowing space and possibly install wind turbines to reduce the studio’s carbon footprint.

Kinship’s impact on the community has not gone unnoticed. At its annual banquet in January, the Milford Regional Chamber of Commerce, which Kinship recently joined, recognized the studio with an Award of Distinction for Tourism in Milford and Connecticut.

The community connection represented by the award results “from having this group of people that comes together to support one another and support the studio,” says DeMott. “It’s about the collective, that’s what makes it happen.”

Walnut Beach

Miles of public beach and boardwalk lead south from Silver Sands State Park in Walnut Beach, a quaint, friendly community that celebrates life with seasonal festivals and offers outdoor recreational opportunities and beautiful natural vistas, said Wendy Terenzio, president of the Walnut Beach Association.

“It’s like living on vacation. You’ve got everything you want within walking distance,” she said.

A few examples:

•  Canoe trips featuring up-close encounters with local wildlife and sensational sunsets, presented by the Connecticut Audubon Society Coastal Center at Milford Point

•  Milford Living Magazine’s spring Kite Fly, Milford Arts Council’s sand sculpting contest each summer, the fanciful Milford Fairy Frolic during the summer solstice, Pumpkins on the Pier presented by the Boys and Girls Club of Milford in the fall

•  Walnut Beach Association in conjunction with the Chamber presents a summer concert series and an annual arts and crafts festival

•  The Walnut Beach Creamery presents a Witch Parade on Halloween Day and in October the Walnut Beach Arts and Business Association presents a Zombie 5K Run

•  The Leprechaun Leap, a polar plunge-type challenge in March, is a benefit for the Literacy Volunteers of Southern Connecticut

Devon

Just west of Walnut Beach is Devon.

“We are the first section of Milford you come into from Fairfield County. We’re considered the gateway into Milford,” said Gloria Krouch, owner of Bohemian High, a Devon shop that offers Bohemian-style clothes, jewelry, incense, CBD and art.

“We offer clothing, gifts and accessories for the free spirit,” Krouch said. “We also have local artists’ gifts and jewelry in our store.”

Krouch and her husband, Richard, also own The Grove, a shop next door to Bohemian High, where alternative health options are offered.

Krouch said Devon is a comfortable area with a friendly atmosphere.

“It’s a nice, welcoming community. We all know each other,” said Krouch.

Highlights:

•  Restaurants and bars include Dockside Brewery and Waterfront Biergarten, the Bridge House Restaurant, the Bridgeport Flyer Diner and Hair of the Dog, Bin 100, Reggiano’s and many more.

•  Shopping includes home furnishing stores and new businesses such as Legrify Inspired, a candle shop.

Boston Post Road

Boston Post Road is the commercial heart of Milford, serving as a gateway to the city’s district regions.

Head southwest to downtown Milford and the communities of Walnut Beach and Devon. Just a few miles east is the coastal community of Woodmont. Continuing northeast and Boston Post Road leads to New Haven and Yale University.

Simon McDonald, Milford Regional Chamber of Commerce Membership Director, said the stretch features furniture stores, boutique and specialty shops, retail box store staples and dining options.

“Post Road is basically a big thoroughfare for people to come in and out of Milford, with all kinds of shopping, tons of great restaurants,” he said.

Here is a sampling:

•  Connecticut Post Mall is the largest shopping mall in Connecticut with more than 150 stores.

•  Beach Party Balloons operates from a retail storefront and offers delivery services.

•  Tropical Smoothie Cafe offers sandwiches, wraps, flatbreads and smoothies, in addition to smoothies.

•  Gusto Trattoria Italian Restaurant features Northern Italian cuisine.

Downtown Milford

More than 100 businesses line the main thoroughfares of Broad and River streets, some that have been there for decades, said Makayla Silva, executive director of the Downtown Milford Association.

The downtown is also the location of a large village green where special events and festivals are frequent occasions, especially in the summer.

“The green is the third-longest green in New England,” she said. “The green is the center of downtown. From May through November there’s always something happening. The downtown is positioned right alongside the harbor.”

“The downtown is the most active part of the city,” said Simon McDonald.

McDonald said downtown residents enjoy easy walking distance to amenities including restaurants, bars, the train station, the public library and the town hall government center. Frequent pop-up shopping opportunities feature artisan markets and fashion sales.

Downtown events and highlights include:

•  Pirates Day, the unofficial kickoff of summer on the first Sunday in June

•  Milford’s annual Oyster Festival, celebrated on the third Saturday of August, offers visitors live entertainment, and food and oysters

•  Stonebridge Restaurant serves up seafood and classic American dishes

•  Founder’s House, offers fine dining on the green featuring steaks and seafood

•  Café Atlantique is a social and business meeting place where the menu includes coffee, crepes and paninis

•  Seven Seas Restaurant and Pub is known for its lobster roll, Silva said

•  The Canvas Patch shop offers gifts, keepsakes and apparel

•  Concerts, open mic nights and plays are available at the Milford Center for the Arts and history exhibits are on display at the Milford Historical Society

Regions of WEST HAVEN

West Haven

West Haven was founded in the 1600s, but it is a new city having been incorporated in 1921.

The city’s shoreline is also home to marshes, and a boardwalk across them extends from one end of the shoreline to the other. The marshes contain a bird sanctuary which will soon be headquarters to the local Audubon Society.

West Haven’s beaches, specifically the Sandy Point Beach and the Bird Sanctuary were ranked 11th out of the 20 best beaches in New England by Globe magazine in 2018.The sanctuary is also a major stopover for migrating birds.

Sandy Point Beach offers trails, fishing and birding. The magazine cited Sandy Point as one of the prize locations on the Connecticut Coastal Birding Trail.

The church on the green downtown is a cemetery of the area’s original founders. On Elm Street the 17th century Ward-Heitmann House can be found, and close by the Veterans’ Museum is located at the railroad station.

At Halloween, volunteers lead a Ghost Walk at the church on the green to the founders cemetery. Volunteers don period costumes and become the ghosts to talk about their lives.

West Haven’s summers are described as having lots of action from organized kids’ sports to frolicking days at the beach.

Festivities include the Make Music Festival, the Kite Fly, the Savin Rock Festival, the site where West Haven’s Thomas Painter first spotted the British who would march through the city en route to New Haven.The green is also where the annual Tree and Menorah Lightings are held at Thanksgiving.

Memorial Day features the city’s only parade. With beaches highlighting the summer, fall features gorgeous New England foliage, and the city’s location makes winter ski trips only some 30 minutes away, and a city park offers ice skating.

The city is home to two libraries, a strong local art community and early childhood development facilities.

In Milford, we have embraced a 1:1 Chromebook/Digital Device for all students, Pre-K through 12. Students use their district-issued device at school and at home to ensure learning never stops. Research, inquiry, homework and collaboration are pivotal in learning, and we make sure every student has the ability to do so using the latest technology.

High Quality Instruction and Professional Learning

In order to deliver excellence in the classroom, the district places great emphasis on continuous professional learning with certified staff members in the quest for high quality instruction. Teachers engage in vigorous training each year and with actual students in a workshop setting to learn more about cutting edge instructional practices.

Students Pursuing Post-Secondary Education

More than 82% of our high school graduates continue their education in a post-secondary institution. Our students have matriculated in a wide variety of colleges and universities, including Harvard, Yale, Boston University, Trinity college, MIT and hundreds more.

Support for Students of All Abilities

With a wide variety of student abilities, the district supports all by providing programming developed just for them. Our Special Education team, comprised of expert teachers, para-educators, counselors and support staff, work to help all students achieve.

AP Courses & Internships: Robust Opportunities

With 27 Advanced Placement courses to choose from, students in our high schools can get a head start on earning college credit while still in high school. In addition, students have the ability to pursue internships in disciplines that are of interest to them – medicine, architecture, writing, business and many more.

Athletic Opportunities for Everyone

The district offers interscholastic play in 25 sports. We are a member of the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC).

The University of New Haven

The University of New Haven is a private, co-educational university that was founded on the Yale campus in 1920.

Located between New York City and Boston in the shoreline city of West Haven, the university is a diverse and vibrant community of more than 8,800 students from across the globe.

The university has experienced significant growth — both in enrollment and in the expansion of the university’s West Haven campus over the past nearly 20 years. In 2024, the university elected Jens Frederiksen, Ph.D., as its seventh president.

In the last decade, the university has completed more than $300 million in major capital projects while launching more than 80 new degree and certificate programs and specialized areas of study.

The University of New Haven also has campuses in Tuscany, Italy, and Orange, Conn.

Milford Hospital: Past, Present and Future

Milford was a small town of 5,000 residents in 1920 when the Milford Hospital Society was formed to create a non-profit health and medical center for the community. Thanks to their efforts and a substantial gift of property by the town’s oldest citizen, Judge Charles Beardsley, Milford Hospital opened in the historic Stockade House (circa 1660) on Jan 17, 1921.

For a century, generations of residents from Milford and nearby received care as facilities and medical services expanded. By the mid-2000s, independent community hospitals across the U.S. were challenged financially. In 2019, Milford Hospital merged with Bridgeport Hospital. As part of Yale New Haven Health, the Bridgeport Hospital-Milford Campus offers local access to the resources of a world-class health system.

Healthcare

West Haven VA Hospital

VA Connecticut Healthcare System was formed in 1995 with the integration of the VA medical centers in West Haven and Newington. VA Connecticut serves veterans in Connecticut and southern New England.

The West Haven campus is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level One Facility.

The Newington campus is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. Community-based outpatient clinics are located in Danbury, New London, Stamford, Waterbury, Willimantic, and Winsted.

Fisher House Connecticut, a “home away from home” for families and patients receiving inpatient care, opened in May 2018. The West Haven Annex/Errera Center relocated to newly constructed space in Orange, Conn. in the fall of 2020.

Vet Centers are located in Danbury, Hartford, Norwich, and New Haven. VA Connecticut HCS is a member of the VA New England Healthcare System (VISN 1) headquartered in Bedford, Mass.

In FY23, VA Connecticut had an operating budget of $853 million with 58,853 uniques, 748,747 outpatient visits, and 182 operating beds.
