Proudly serving Milford, West Haven, and the surrounding business communities.

For nearly 70 years, The MRCC has been a vital and instrumental component to our business community. Serving our businesses has never been more important than now as we continue to work together to navigate these uncertain times. We are very excited about the future of our community and the success of our members. As always, our organization provides unmatched opportunities to align with old and new relationships and network with prospective customers, as well as a dynamic schedule of events. The programs and events provided to our members offer extraordinary opportunities to enhance networks & relationships.

As we look to the future, we continue our strategic planning for this quickly evolving business environment to offer our members innovative tools to be successful moving forward. The last few years have been like no other we have witnessed, and this Chamber went into high gear to support its members and shine a light on them in the wake of troubling times. The Chamber proudly acted as a marketing arm for many of the businesses who understandably needed assistance during the time of COVID-19. Through the use of social media, networking, business consultation, and events designed with health and safety as the priority, the Chamber showed its strength to assist and advocate for its membership – and it worked!

As a resident of this dynamic coastal region, and someone who raised a family here, it is of the utmost importance to me that our already high quality and business friendly community grow and excel. Whether you are new to the Milford region or a long-time resident, if you are ready to take advantage of all that the Chamber offers its members, we look forward to hearing from you.

As 2023 gets started here at the Regional Chamber of Milford and West Haven, there are a number of exciting things happening in our region. With more available places to host events we are excited to be taking advantage of all the region has to offer. From the beautiful sunset at the September BAH at the CT Audubon Center to the rolling hills of Great River Golf Course and the Concerts at Old Grove Park and the Green in West Haven, our members will have a chance to see all that this region has to offer, and the region will see all that the Chamber offers.

Our communities are continuously growing and changing and as a Chamber we are happy to be a guiding voice as to how to make this a better place to work and live. Our voice is amplified by our members so please reach out to us to make sure your ideas are heard. The Chamber is a membership organization which means as a member your opinion is important and we are always happy to hear it. Who We Are

At the Milford Regional Chamber of Commerce, we actively engage with neighbors old and new in efforts to make our City better for everyone. For over a half a century, the Milford Regional Chamber of Commerce has served as the voice of the business community. Our goal is simple: We want to continue to improve the economic vitality of our city by fostering a climate of growth and success through the support, talent, and resources of our members. Recently, the Chamber has integrated with the West Haven Chamber, allowing us to represent the West Haven business community. Today, we serve a much broader and diverse group through advocacy, business and economic development, education and leadership.

We have the distinguished honor of welcoming businesses to our community with a special ribbon cutting ceremony. We also perform ceremonial ribbon cuttings for an already-established member’s expansion, re-branding, or new product unveiling.  We bring the camera, official scissors, our enthusiastic ambassadors, and, of course, the ribbon!

Business After Hours is the premier networking event for business professionals. Hosted by businesses and member organizations throughout the year, BAH events provide an opportunity to network in a relaxed setting.

The Best of Milford Awards honors and celebrates the businesses that make up the fabric of our beloved community. We gratefully salute every Milford business nominated and encourage the community’s continued support of the establishments that make Milford home.

Milford Restaurant Week is a celebration of the area’s top restaurants through curated prix-fixe menus that showcase their chef’s greatest dishes. This event offers restaurants the opportunity to introduce the community and visitors to what they do best at a price that encourages dining out.

Our member companies range in size, location and industry.  Twenty percent of our membership is from outside of the Milford community as we do serve the greater Milford area.

Building solid relationships in the community is vital to sustaining and growing your business; the Chamber is here to help your business succeed. Through the Chamber, you will meet new contacts and gain new business leads at many of our events. The Chamber also acts as a referral service for the businesses and residents of our community through our Membership Directory in print and online and we receive many calls and stop-ins daily asking for business recommendations.

Businesses who are interested in learning more about the Milford Regional Chamber are invited to attend two Members Only events in the course of a year. We welcome and encourage you to attend a Business After Hours (BAH), Business Seminar Series or other information session before joining the Chamber. Some events are open to the public, including our Annual BIC Golf Classic, Ribbon Cuttings, Mayoral Addresses, Legislative Breakfasts and other events.

We have three leads groups that meet weekly to exchange business leads, a young professionals group called EPIC, a Business Committee, a Restaurant Week Committee and more. We also have a Health & Wellness Council and a Legislative Action Committee.

Economic Development

Pushing for a better, stronger, more innovative community

Athletic Brewing Company, which owns and operates the world’s largest dedicated non-alcoholic brewery, straddles the city limits of Milford and West Haven.

The idea to start a non-alcoholic craft brewery came from Bill Shufelt, a former trader at one of the largest hedge funds, who decided to take a break from alcohol while training for an ultramarathon in 2012. That’s when Shufelt realized how much alcohol was holding him back, so he left it behind for good. “It was an artificial ceiling on achieving all of my goals,” Shufelt said. “Eliminating alcohol was the biggest life hack that I’ve ever uncovered.”

However, Shufelt still loved socializing with friends and family and pairing great brews with delicious meals. When he stopped drinking, he missed the experience of drinking a full-flavored craft beer but couldn’t find any non-alcoholic options.

“I was shocked that nobody had taken the time to develop a line of non-alcoholic craft beers for the 60% of Americans who consume less than one drink per week,” Shufelt added. Shufelt started doing market research, reading brewing textbooks, and eventually teamed up with John Walker, an award-winning brewer out of New Mexico, to launch Athletic Brewing.

In 2017, the two men began brewing their first test batches in an empty warehouse that would eventually become Athletic Brewing’s original brewery and taproom in Stratford.

Between 2017 and 2018, Shufelt and Walker produced over 100 trial batches, making subtle tweaks to the process each time before finally settling on the proprietary method that has helped the company earn over 75 awards for taste and quality.

In mid-2018, the company launched its first two commercial brews – Run Wild IPA and Upside Dawn Golden – at seven Whole Foods locations in Connecticut. Five years later, Athletic brews are now available in upwards of 50,000 retail locations nationwide.

To meet the growing demand, Athletic purchased an 80,000-square-foot brewery in San Diego in 2020 that is now capable of producing 200,000 barrels annually. One year later, the company began construction on a 150,000-square-foot brewery and office space in Milford.

That location opened in mid-2022 and will eventually be capable of producing 450,000 barrels of beer annually. Today, Athletic Brewing has a 55% share of the non-alcoholic craft beer market and is the third-largest non-alcoholic beer brand in the U.S. – behind Heineken 0.0 and Bud Zero. Its products are distributed in all 50 U.S. states as well as Canada, the UK, and several other European countries.

Amidst the growth, Athletic has prioritized giving back. It has donated over $2.5 million to protecting and restoring outdoor spaces across the globe since 2018.

As a part of its IMPACT Program, Athletic donates 1% of annual revenue to non-profit organizations that support positive impact and opportunity from the ground up.

Regions of Milford

Walnut Beach

Miles of public beach and boardwalk lead south from Silver Sands State Park in Walnut Beach, a quaint, friendly community that celebrates life with seasonal festivals and offers outdoor recreational opportunities and beautiful natural vistas, said Wendy Terenzio, president of the Walnut Beach Association.

“It’s like living on vacation. You’ve got everything you want within walking distance,” she said.

A few examples:

•  Canoe trips featuring up-close encounters with local wildlife and sensational sunsets, presented by the Connecticut Audubon Society Coastal Center at Milford Point

•  Milford Living Magazine’s spring Kite Fly, Milford Arts Council’s sand sculpting contest each summer, the fanciful Milford Fairy Frolic during the summer solstice, Pumpkins on the Pier presented by the Boys and Girls Club of Milford in the fall

•  Walnut Beach Association in conjunction with the Chamber presents a summer concert series and an annual arts and crafts festival

•  The Walnut Beach Creamery presents a Witch Parade on Halloween Day and in October the Walnut Beach Arts and Business Association presents a Zombie 5K Run

•  The Leprechaun Leap, a polar plunge-type challenge in March, is a benefit for the Literacy Volunteers of Southern Connecticut

Devon

Just west of Walnut Beach is Devon.

“We are the first section of Milford you come into from Fairfield County. We’re considered the gateway into Milford,” said Gloria Krouch, owner of Bohemian High, a Devon shop that offers Bohemian-style clothes, jewelry, incense, CBD and art.

“We offer clothing, gifts and accessories for the free spirit,” Krouch said. “We also have local artists’ gifts and jewelry in our store.”

Krouch and her husband, Richard, also own The Grove, a shop next door to Bohemian High, where alternative health options are offered.

Krouch said Devon is a comfortable area with a friendly atmosphere.

“It’s a nice, welcoming community. We all know each other,” said Krouch.

Highlights:

•  Restaurants and bars include the newly opened Dockside Brewery and Waterfront Biergarten, the Bridge House Restaurant, the Bridgeport Flyer Diner and Hair of the Dog, Bin 100, Reggiano’s and many more.

•  Shopping includes home furnishing stores and new businesses such as Legrify Inspired, a candle shop.

Regions of Milford

Downtown Milford

More than 100 businesses line the main thoroughfares of Broad and River streets, some that have been there for decades, said Makayla Silva, executive director of the Downtown Milford Association.

The downtown is also the location of a large village green where special events and festivals are frequent occasions, especially in the summer.

“The green is the third-longest green in New England,” she said. “The green is the center of downtown. From May through November there’s always something happening. The downtown is positioned right alongside the harbor.”

“The downtown is the most active part of the city,” said Simon McDonald.

McDonald said downtown residents enjoy easy walking distance to amenities including restaurants, bars, the train station, the public library and the town hall government center. Frequent pop-up shopping opportunities feature artisan markets and fashion sales.

Downtown events and highlights include:

•  Pirates Day, the unofficial kickoff of summer on the first Sunday in June

•  Milford’s annual Oyster Festival, celebrated on the third Saturday of August, offers visitors live entertainment, and food and oysters

•  Stonebridge Restaurant serves up seafood and classic American dishes

•  Founder’s House, offers fine dining on the green featuring steaks and seafood

•  Café Atlantique is a social and business meeting place where the menu includes coffee, crepes and paninis

•  Seven Seas Restaurant and Pub is known for its lobster roll, Silva said

•  The Canvas Patch shop offers gifts, keepsakes and apparel

•  Concerts, open mic nights and plays are available at the Milford Center for the Arts and history exhibits are on display at the Milford Historical Society

Regions of WEST HAVEN

West Haven

West Haven was founded in the 1600s, but it is a new city having been incorporated in 1921.

The city’s shoreline is also home to marshes, and a boardwalk across them extends from one end of the shoreline to the other. The marshes contain a bird sanctuary which will soon be headquarters to the local Audubon Society.

West Haven’s beaches, specifically the Sandy Point Beach and the Bird Sanctuary were ranked 11th out of the 20 best beaches in New England by Globe magazine in 2018.The sanctuary is also a major stopover for migrating birds.

Sandy Point Beach offers trails, fishing and birding. The magazine cited Sandy Point as one of the prize locations on the Connecticut Coastal Birding Trail.

The church on the green downtown is a cemetery of the area’s original founders. On Elm Street the 17th century Ward-Heitmann House can be found, and close by the Veterans’ Museum is located at the railroad station.

At Halloween, volunteers lead a Ghost Walk at the church on the green to the founders cemetery. Volunteers don period costumes and become the ghosts to talk about their lives.

West Haven’s summers are described as having lots of action from organized kids’ sports to frolicking days at the beach.

Festivities include the Make Music Festival, the Kite Fly, the Savin Rock Festival, the site where West Haven’s Thomas Painter first spotted the British who would march through the city en route to New Haven.The green is also where the annual Tree and Menorah Lightings are held at Thanksgiving.

Memorial Day features the city’s only parade. With beaches highlighting the summer, fall features gorgeous New England foliage, and the city’s location makes winter ski trips only some 30 minutes away, and a city park offers ice skating.

The city is home to two libraries, a strong local art community and early childhood development facilities.

In order to deliver excellence in the classroom, the district places great emphasis on continuous professional learning with certified staff members in the quest for high quality instruction. Teachers engage in vigorous training each year and with with actual students in a workshop setting to learn more about cutting edge instructional practices.

More than 82 percent of our high school graduates continue their education in a post-secondary institution. Our students have matriculated in a wide variety of colleges and universities, including Harvard, Yale, Boston University, Trinity college, MIT and hundreds more.

With a wide variety of student abilities, the district supports all by providing programming developed just for them. Our Special Education team, comprised of expert teachers, para-educators, counselors and support staff, work to help all students achieve.

With 27 Advanced Placement courses to choose from, students in our high schools can get a head start on earning college credit while still in high school. In addition, students have the ability to pursue internships in disciplines that are of interest to them – medicine, architecture, writing, business, and many more.

The University of New Haven

The University of New Haven is a private, co-educational university that was founded on the Yale campus in 1920.

Located between New York City and Boston in the shoreline city of West Haven, the university is a diverse and vibrant community of more than 8,800 students from across the globe.

The university has experienced significant growth — both in enrollment and in the expansion of the university’s West Haven campus over the past nearly 20 years, under the visionary leadership of President Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D.

Milford was a small town of 5,000 residents in 1920 when the Milford Hospital Society was formed to create a non-profit health and medical center for the community. Thanks to their efforts and a substantial gift of property by the town’s oldest citizen, Judge Charles Beardsley, Milford Hospital opened in the historic Stockade House (circa 1660) on Jan 17, 1921.

For a century, generations of residents from Milford and nearby received care as facilities and medical services expanded. By the mid-2000’s, independent community hospitals across the U.S. were challenged financially. In 2019, Milford Hospital merged with Bridgeport Hospital. As part of Yale New Haven Health, the Bridgeport Hospital-Milford Campus offers local access to the resources of a world-class health system.

Healthcare

West Haven VA Hospital

VA Connecticut Healthcare System was formed in 1995 with the integration of the VA medical centers in West Haven and Newington. VA Connecticut serves veterans in Connecticut and southern New England.

The West Haven campus is a tertiary care facility classified as a Clinical Referral Level One Facility.

The Newington campus is an ambulatory care center that provides primary and specialty care. Community-based outpatient clinics are located in Danbury, New London, Stamford, Waterbury, Willimantic, and Winsted.

Fisher House Connecticut, a “home away from home” for families and patients receiving inpatient care, opened in May 2018. The West Haven Annex/Errera Center relocated to newly constructed space in Orange, Conn. in the fall of 2020.

Vet Centers are located in Danbury, Hartford, Norwich, and New Haven. VA Connecticut HCS is a member of the VA New England Healthcare System (VISN 1) headquartered in Bedford, Mass.

In FY22, VA Connecticut had an operating budget of $853 million with 59,478 uniques, 746,350 outpatient visits, and 169 operating beds.
