Welcome to the Mequon-Thiensville community, a place where natural beauty, vibrant local life and exceptional amenities come together to create an outstanding place to live and visit.

Mequon, with a population of approximately 25,500, is located along the scenic shoreline of Lake Michigan and spans nearly 47 square miles. Thiensville, a small but distinctive self-governed village, sits along a graceful bend of the Milwaukee River and is surrounded by Mequon. Just one square mile in size, the village is home to about 3,300 residents who enjoy its unique charm and close-knit atmosphere.

Together, the communities offer a wealth of outdoor experiences, from stunning lake and river views to expansive parks, well-maintained trails, golf courses and protected nature preserves. These natural assets blend seamlessly with a lively business environment featuring locally loved restaurants, boutique shopping, health and wellness centers, and a wide range of professional services. Festivals, farmers markets, concerts and year-round events add to the area’s energy and help foster a strong sense of belonging.

Education plays a central role in community life. The area is served by a highly regarded public school district, complemented by quality private and higher education institutions and an outstanding library system. The Mequon-Thiensville Chamber of Commerce strengthens and connects the local business community by fostering meaningful relationships among member businesses and with the broader community.

As a nonprofit 501(c)(6) organization, the Chamber is self-funded and guided by a dedicated volunteer board of directors. We proudly serve as the collective voice of the business community.

Their continued leadership and commitment to the Chamber Golf Classic helped make this event not only the Chamber’s most-successful fundraiser, but also one that members and sponsors look forward to each year.

The Chamber’s Celebrate Our Community Awards Dinner is another signature event that marked its 35th year in 2025 and continues to honor the people and businesses that make our community thrive.

The Chamber also supports and celebrates member milestones through ribbon cuttings and grand openings, helping businesses gain visibility and recognition at key moments of growth.

With the support of our vibrant membership, the Chamber offers networking events, educational programs and marketing opportunities that help businesses grow and connect. The Chamber is also proud to support emerging leaders through its Young Professionals Group, which provides early career professionals with opportunities to build skills and lasting relationships.

In addition, the Chamber administers a community gift certificate program that encourages residents and visitors to shop locally, serves as a community welcome and resource center and actively participates in Ozaukee County tourism initiatives.

Roots & Legacy: Discover the History of Mequon and Thiensville

The City of Mequon and the Village of Thiensville share a rich and intertwined history that stretches back to the early 19th century.

During this era, adventurers arrived along the Milwaukee River to trap, trade and interact with the Potawatomi and Menominee Nations who lived along its banks. By the mid-1830s, waves of explorers and settlers began establishing homesteads in the area, which was formally designated as the Town of Mequon in 1836.

Among the first settlers to shape the community’s future were German immigrant John Henry Thien and his noble-born wife. Journeying north along the Milwaukee River, they discovered the Native American village of Mequon Sippi and chose it as their home in 1842. There, they constructed a dam to power a grist mill and sawmill, which were essential services that helped the young settlement grow. As more immigrants arrived, the area flourished.

Mequon became an official township in 1846, with early town meetings held in Thien’s home. The thriving hamlet surrounding the mills remained part of the Town of Mequon until 1910, when it was incorporated as the Village of Thiensville with a population of 289.

Growth continued steadily throughout the early 20th century. In 1957, the Town of Mequon transitioned to the City of Mequon. Although the region has expanded dramatically since its early days, both communities remain committed to preserving and honoring the culture, stories and people who built this special place.

Today, residents and visitors can explore that history through several treasured historic sites:

Historic 1914 Firehouse – Thiensville

This iconic building is home to the William F. Rausch Fire Museum, featuring a fully restored 1935 Seagrave Suburbanite pumper—once a point of great pride for the local fire department.

Jonathan Clark House Museum – Mequon

A stunning example of 1848 Greek Revival architecture, this museum offers tours by appointment and hosts numerous community events throughout the year.

Isham Day House – Mequon

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Isham Day House sits in Settlers Park and once served as a two-room post office. The museum inside shares stories of former postmasters and community leaders. A riverside path lined with historical markers offers further insight into the area’s past.

Trinity Freistadt Historical Society—
West Mequon

Located in the historic Freistadt settlement, this site preserves records dating back to 1839 and features a historic village. Freistadt is home to Wisconsin’s first Lutheran church, originally established as a log cabin. The current stone structure, Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Freistadt, was built in 1884 and remains a lasting symbol of the area’s early heritage.

Economic Development: New and Ongoing Projects Reinforce Strong, Stable Growth

The City of Mequon continues to experience exponential growth, as does the Village of Thiensville. Construction and redevelopment along commercial corridors and significant infrastructure improvements are among the reasons for this added economic boost.

The City of Mequon benefited from the redevelopment of projects within the North Port Washington Road commercial corridor with the introduction of a new restaurant under new ownership and a two-story medi-spa, which completed construction in 2025; they have a combined estimated value of $5.5 million. The city also benefited from the new construction of a second location for a Brookfield, Wis.-branded childcare facility, rounding the redevelopment of approximately 9 acres of new retail and services in the district. The construction of the daycare was completed in 2025, with an estimated value of $3 million. All of these projects are located within two of the city’s Tax Increment Districts.

Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center Ozaukee by Ethos Veterinary Care also opened a brand-new, 24-hour emergency hospital on North Port Washington Road in Mequon.

Newcastle Place in Mequon is currently undergoing an expansion that includes adding new residences. In summer 2025, the community broke ground on 14 new carriage homes designed for independent living. These homes feature modern finishes, private garages, and community-oriented design, with expected move-in dates in 2026.

Additionally, the city finalized plans for a major infrastructure investment for road, signage, lighting and landscaping improvements along North Port Washington Road and plans to bid the project for spring 2026 construction. The city is completing the public infrastructure project that provides safe road crossings of Mequon Road, a Wisconsin state highway within the established pedestrian-oriented neighborhood. New traffic signals, removal of overhead utilities, neighborhood and directional signage and streetscaping elements are completed or in process.

In 2024, the city completed a market analysis, which acknowledges the strong and stable health of the entire commercial corridor. The report also identifies 13 priority sites that could serve as transformative redevelopment projects with direct and indirect economic benefit.

It is anticipated that the final phase of Foxtown’s master plan for a commercial building on Weston Drive will be completed by 2026 and will contribute an additional $10 million to the overall master planned development value, exceeding values anticipated and required by the city-approved development agreement. The same developer is delivering new service establishments in existing, vacant retail space within the project in 2025 and 2026. In addition, several non-conforming sites along Buntrock Avenue and Weston Drive have become available for purchase and staff anticipates redevelopment of a series of contiguous parcels in 2026-27.

Thiensville: Positioned
for Thoughtful Growth

As the Village of Thiensville enters 2026, it continues to stand out as a community that pairs small-town charm with strategic economic investment. Located in the heart of Ozaukee County and within easy reach of the Milwaukee metropolitan area, Thiensville offers an attractive environment for residents, businesses and developers.

A key driver of near-term economic momentum is Tax Incremental District (TID) No. 2, branded Thiensville Crossing—a roughly 15-acre redevelopment area centered at East Freistadt Road and North Main Street. The Village Board has designated this area for mixed-use redevelopment, using tax increment financing to support land acquisition, infrastructure improvements, streetscape enhancements and public amenities. The district plan emphasizes pedestrian connectivity, inviting public spaces and design elements that complement Thiensville’s historic downtown character. Targeted public investment in site readiness and infrastructure has positioned the area for high-quality private development.

Complementing the district plan, a new mixed-use housing and commercial project is under active review for a vacant site within TID No. 2. The proposal includes approximately 80 market-rate residential units and 7,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial and amenity space, reflecting market demand while supporting downtown activity and long-term economic stability.

Beyond redevelopment areas, Thiensville benefits from a strong residential foundation and household incomes that exceed regional averages. Its business community is anchored by small enterprises, professional services, retail and hospitality supported by a skilled workforce and convenient regional access.

With development on the horizon and a continued commitment to fiscal stewardship and community, Thiensville and Mequon are well positioned for a strong, stable and vibrant economic future.

For hiking and biking enthusiasts, the Mequon Nature Preserve and the Ozaukee Interurban Trail feature beautiful routes winding through forests, wetlands and open landscapes.

Sports fans can catch a Lakeshore Chinooks collegiate baseball game at Kapco Park on the Concordia University Wisconsin campus, where lively competition meets stunning views of Lake Michigan.

Major Parks & Attractions

Mee-Kwon County Park
This is an 18-hole public golf course with a full-service restaurant and free practice facilities, including putting, chipping and bunker greens. The park also features fishing ponds, hiking trails and winter activities such as sledding, ice skating and cross-country skiing.

Mequon Nature Preserve
Spanning 438 acres, the preserve features five miles of trails through forests, wetlands and fields, a 50-foot observation tower and an education center. Its mission includes restoring land to pre-European settlement conditions and providing a habitat for local wildlife.

Ozaukee Interurban Trail
This public, paved trail begins in Mequon and runs across Ozaukee County. Designated a Great Wisconsin Birding Trail, it offers scenic views of the Milwaukee River, Lake Michigan, wetlands, forests and farmland. In winter, portions of the trail are open for cross-country skiing. Along the trail, visitors can access restaurants, shopping and community highlights in Mequon and Thiensville.

Rotary Park
Rotary Park is a spacious 75-acre community park located in Mequon. It hosts popular annual events such as Pommerntag and the Jewish Food Festival. The park features a large fishing pond, pavilions, a stage, soccer fields and walking paths, offering something for everyone to enjoy.

Thiensville Village Park
Thiensville Village Park, often regarded as Thiensville’s crown jewel, is a beautiful park nestled along the Milwaukee River. It serves as the venue for a variety of community events, including the popular weekly Village Market from June through October. The park offers a covered pavilion, boat launch, playground, fishing, pickleball and tennis courts, as well as softball and baseball fields. Visitors can also enjoy the scenic Rotary Riverwalk trail.

Virmond County Park
This is a 63-acre park offering panoramic views of Lake Michigan from a bluff. Visitors can explore nature trails, enjoy picnic areas and see a decorative chimney swift nesting tower. Sports facilities include volleyball, tennis, soccer and baseball. A retractable stairway installed in 2023 provides access to the lakeshore.

Located in southeastern Wisconsin, Mequon is situated on the beautiful western shores of Lake Michigan spanning over 47 square miles, with one-square-mile Thiensville nestled within its borders.

Mequon and Thiensville are located just 18 miles north of downtown Milwaukee and about 25 miles from General Mitchell International Airport. Interstate 43, which can be easily accessed from Mequon, provides a quick and convenient route to Milwaukee, Chicago and Green Bay.

Students aim high, reach goals: Area Schools Boost Confidence and Skills

The Mequon‑Thiensville School District (MTSD) has earned its place among Wisconsin’s top public school systems, consistently earning a “Significantly Exceeds Expectations” rating on the state report card for each year that the report card has been produced.

It serves more than 3,550 students across six schools, offering rigorous academics, strong athletics, enriching fine and performing arts programs and a wide range of co-curricular opportunities that ignite a love of learning and prepare young people for lives of possibility.

MTSD’s success is more than student achievement—it’s a cornerstone of our Mequon-Thiensville community. High-quality schools help attract families, support strong local property values, enhance civic engagement and create a vibrant environment where students, families and neighbors connect. MTSD offers fine and performing arts, STEM programs, world languages, athletics (28 sports offered at the high school level), a full 4K program with wrap-around care, one-to-one Chromebook devices for Grades 4-12, and 25 Advanced Placement courses. These rich offerings are delivered by passionate, high-quality educators who build meaningful relationships with students, understand what drives them to succeed and inspire confidence and independence.

The district also strengthens community connections and workforce readiness through its Academic & Career Planning (ACP) program, which pairs students with local businesses, mentors and apprenticeships that connect learning to real-world pathways. The Mequon‑Thiensville Recreation Department, run by MTSD, further bridges the school and community through year-round programming, including before-and after-school care, summer enrichment and recreational opportunities for all ages.

In March 2025, the MTSD Board of Education approved the district’s 2025–2028 Strategic Plan, following a broad-based community engagement process involving parents, students, staff, alumni, business leaders and community members. The plan builds on prior work and focuses on strengthening the educator workforce and retention, enhancing curriculum consistency and innovation and deepening community trust, collaboration and engagement.

With this next-phase vision, MTSD is aligning its resources and priorities to continue delivering outstanding education while supporting Mequon-Thiensville’s long-term vitality. Together, we will work to sustain and enrich the community we are proud to call home.

Private schools are also a beneficial option for academics in the area. Among the selections are Christ Alone Lutheran School in Thiensville, Lumen Christi Catholic School in Mequon and the top-rated University School of Milwaukee, providing college preparatory education to students from pre-K through 12th grade.

Great futures can start at Milwaukee Area Technical College, where more than 30,000 students each year discover high-quality programs, low-cost tuition and the flexibility they need to succeed. Students can earn a career-ready credential in as little as one to two years—or start their journey toward a bachelor’s degree. Plus, MATC partners with area schools for dual-credit opportunities that give students a head start.

Concordia University Wisconsin is another place students can follow their dreams and launch their academic careers. Located on the beautiful shoreline of Lake Michigan, Concordia is a private four-year higher education Lutheran community. It serves both traditional and adult students and offers more than 70 majors and multiple career advancement programs.
