Destination and Tourism Development Catalyst for Economic Development

T he MC prides itself on being a leader for important discussions on behalf of the business community, especially small businesses. Our programs and advocacy are shaped by those discussions and the need for businesses and business owners to have a voice.

The Meadowlands Sports Complex dates back to the early ’70s, and while its prominence has wavered over the years, there is one fact that has not changed. The Meadowlands Sports and Entertainment Complex has created a destination-related economy in our region that needs to be nurtured and developed.

Destination and Tourism Development IS Economic Development plain and simple. Our ability to attract major events to MetLife Stadium, The Meadowlands Racetrack and American Dream fills hotel rooms with visitors from all around the globe who seek entertainment, shopping, dining and family experiences. And we are a better and broader destination today than at any time in our past but our work is not yet complete.

Later in this issue you will read about our vision to replace the shuttered arena with a multi-use youth and amateur sports/convention center facility which will maximize all of the existing assets at the complex. Please check out www.conventioncentermeadowlands.com.

Emerging Leadership

The MC has adopted a major business plan goal of advancing and mentoring Emerging Leaders. While leadership is a personal passion of mine, the MC is taking the lead on establishing programs to mentor high school and college students on the realities and needs of our businesses, communities and government. We will be hosting an Emerging Leadership Summit in the Fall to highlight those needs and to establish initiatives to make a difference in young lives.

Health & Wellness

Health care systems across the country are facing challenges at a break-neck pace. We are lucky to live in a region that has an abundance of health care options that are among the very best in the nation.

We will gather those regional health care systems to talk about how those challenges and, more importantly, the possible solutions to ensuring the very best in health and wellness care for ourselves and our employees.

What is Hospital at Home? Will Virtual Visits continue to have a place in the process? How will AI impact the delivery of health care? What’s the next generation of diagnostic tools being researched? How should we be focusing on mental health issues? All of these topics will be the focus of our attention at an upcoming Health & Wellness Symposium.

The Meadowlands Region: Are You Ready for Some Futbol?

Helpful Leadership

Being “helpful” is a skill ingrained in us as children. Our teachers taught us to be helpful handing out papers, cleaning up the classroom, or lending a hand to our classmates. When we played sports, we learned how to help lift our teammates after they fell or how to help someone learn a new technique. Being helpful in business is just as important, whether internally coaching and mentoring team members or externally building relationships with key stakeholders.

Consider the following when it comes to helpful leadership:

– Model helpfulness. Just as in grade school, people learn through observing the actions of others in business. As a leader, it is essential that you cultivate a culture where seeking ways to help your co-workers is not only expected, but required. While some level of healthy competition is needed within any organization, if that competition creates divisiveness, frustration or anxiety, a team can break down. Rather, if your employees see you proactively helping others at every level of the organization, they will emulate that behavior.

– Set expectations. When it comes to communication and leadership, vague language such as, “John, I need you to be more helpful to your peers,” is simply not useful. Instead, be specific in your expectations, whether that means setting up a structured mentorship program or convening a lunch or coffee meeting where you bring small groups together and facilitate a discussion around the topic of collaborating as a team and what it means to be helpful. It is your job as a leader to let your team know what is expected of them.

– Ask questions. As a leader, we often try to guess what is most important to our team. Instead, take the time to set up a 10 to 15-minute meeting with individual team members to touch base and check in. For example, try asking the following question, “What one thing can I do to be more helpful to your growth in the organization?” Be sure to actively listen, agree on next steps and document what was agreed upon with an e-mail so you ensure you heard your team member correctly. Then, follow-up on a consistent basis with your team member to ensure they are on track.

– Be proactive. When it comes to building relationships, never underestimate the simple act of a phone call or email. Reach out to a client to check in and ask if there is anything you can do to be helpful. Share an article or video you may have seen that you feel would be of interest to someone in your orbit. It is so much more effective to reach out just to be helpful and check in rather than reaching out only when you have a request or because it is time to renew a contract or engagement.

– Empathize. Too often we get consumed with our own “to-do” list or with the ongoing influx of emails or never-ending meetings. Because we are so busy, we often miss the signs that someone on our team may be struggling with a project, a family issue or a health concern. Being a self-aware and empathetic leader allows you to be more in tune with what is going on with the individuals on your team. Actively listen to their needs, offer support in the way of additional team members to assist them with a project or time out of the office to address their personal issues. Being helpful means fostering an environment that promotes a better work / life balance.

Gridiron Coach Adapts Team Building to Corporate Culture and Leadership

J aime Elizondo knows a thing or two about building a winning team. The veteran college and professional football coach is also a leader in teaching principles for effective corporate culture – from the boardroom to the office and hybrid work environment.

“Whether it’s business or football, leadership starts with culture, which drives behavior and yields results. Culture is not something you tack on the wall,” Elizondo said, alluding to a game plan. “It’s felt by people who come from outside. They see the players and team values, how we operate.”.’

Team building begins with personal connections.

“How you create connections leads to mutual trust. In football, from coach to coach, player to player, player to coach. We put the team first and trust they do their best to fulfill their responsibilities that can lead to championships. Create a level of accountability. You can’t swap people in companies, so break down to how they hold each other accountable. The best teams develop high performance, defining how to succeed above norms consistently and for prolonged periods, maintaining the wellbeing of the organization and its relationships.”

Develop a mindset focused on clarity, purpose, courage, productivity, energy and influence, he noted. It starts with connection, engagement, confidence, joy, and shared direction and vision. Aside from defining mission, values and goals, this is part of the basis for setting up a company culture.

Elizondo gauges corporate culture by observing work environments.

“Is it a dictatorial or collaborative setting? If I see one person doing all the talking, it’s not a team building environment. The best leaders and teams transfer energy. You may walk in a room and see them laughing and sharing ideas,” he explained. “The best leaders are constantly recognizing shifts in energy. They’re compassionate, confident and excited. They’re interacting and have the courage to express themselves.”

Eliminate distractions to improve productivity and efficiency, he noted.

“Research shows that it takes 23 minutes and 15 seconds to regain your focus when you’re distracted at work,” Elizondo said. ‘There’s 86,400 seconds in a day. High performance teams get more done during that time not because they’re smarter. They know how to work individually and as a team.”

Create a culture of accountability through shared responsibility.

“You need to admit, ‘I screwed up. This is on me.’ An offensive coordinator may say it was their call. The quarterback may say, “I gotta make a better pass.’ A player may say, ‘I didn’t see the hand signal.’ Business is no different. Identify gaps in communication, have a plan, and keep everyone on the same page. Be honest and transparent. Create an environment where people can express their opinions, where transparency is valued and you’re doing things to help each other. Collaborate to add value from feedback.”

Optimize work in 50-minute blocks with 10 minutes to rest and recharge, he suggested. He noted that some of the best corporate teams he’s seen have optimized schedules with every minute of the day planned.

Hybrid work schedules can be conducive to team building.

“You can check in but not connect,” he said. “We live in a disconnected world, but we are more connected than ever electronically. Layer connections beyond the office. Hold workshops when you come in. Get everyone in the same room, go into breakout sessions. Everyone gets two minutes to discuss what’s great in their life, what’s new. I got a new puppy. Someone else started a new hobby. You connect with the sales, IT, advertising and marketing, and other teams on a human level.”
