Thought Leaders Conference – Transportation and Mobility

Each year the 2040 Foundation hosts a Thought Leaders Conference on a topic of major importance to all businesses in the Meadowlands. We use this event to help shape the advocacy that the Chamber takes on.

This year we are bringing in the CEO of the Gateway Rail Tunnel Project, which is the most significant infrastructure project in the entire country.

Kris Kolluri will be joined by senior execs from NJ Turnpike Authority, NJ Transit, and Amtrak to talk about projects in our region and how they will address our transportation concerns.

This event will be held on Thursday, Sept. 28.

Relationship Building and Business Learning

As you know, the MC prides itself on hosting terrific networking events. We try very hard to mix up the time and the setting to allow comfortable and enjoyable opportunities to meet new people as that is the best way to build new relationships.

When I founded the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, Inc., (AACCNJ) 16 years ago, it was to serve as a vehicle to foster relationships with those who possessed the requisite Resources, Opportunities and Information (ROI). It was a strategy to mitigate a host of systemic challenges that limit the equitable participation of Blacks in New Jersey’s economy.

Looking at the Numbers

Specifically, there are 1.2 million Black residents in the state of New Jersey and over 88,000 Black businesses. Ironically, this demographic has the highest poverty and unemployment rates, and the lowest median incomes: 35-37% own their homes versus Whites who are at 70%.

Black net worth is $5,900 versus $315,000 for whites. If the saying is true that “a rising tide lifts all boats,” then the statistics that I just shared should prompt those with ROI to an intentional call to action.

The Tragedy of George Floyd

The murder of George Floyd more than three years ago sparked a national outcry to address the inequities of Blacks versus mainstream Americans. There were pledges of grants, equity investments into Black businesses, career opportunities, board seats and corporate citizenship investments. Much was done. Those overtures, however, have not been strategically sustained in the marketplace.

As we moved further away from this tragic event that occurred May 25, 2020, many have retreated to the status quo. There has been an ultimate reneging on their public declarations to Black businesses throughout the state.

Affirmative Action & Title VI

As a further consequence, now that the Supreme Court has ruled to strip away the benefits afforded through Affirmative Action in higher education and public contracting (Title VI), what is next? So much for the premise that “a rising tide lifts all boats.”

It is worth noting that New Jersey is one of the most diverse states in the country and I see this as one of our greatest assets and strengths. However, if the perception is that the demographic data was provided to elicit an emotional or charitable exchange, about Black New Jerseyans and diversity, then you have clearly missed the point.

Leveraging Diversity, Equity

& Inclusion

The favorable impact of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) when leveraged as a value proposition, or a strategic objective, is well documented. The data and research supports this.

Ironically, many of today’s leaders turn to these same sources for their counsel on strategies and trust their recommendations. However, they do not attribute the same weight when recruiting diverse talent for career or contract opportunities notwithstanding the favorable metrics.

Two examples of effectively implemented and executed DE&I strategies include:

• Frederick Douglass and Robert Smalls negotiating with

President Lincoln to incorporate 170,000 slaves as a part of

his Army to win the Civil War.

• Thomas Edison including the filament developed by Lewis

Lattimore, the son of a slave, into his light bulb invention to

keep it illuminated.

Part of the mission of the AACCNJ is to serve as an advocate, and a bridge, and to expose those who desire a more competitive New Jersey to best practices that have the potential to achieve these objectives. I see this as an opportunity to shatter the status quo and to foster transformational alliances for the betterment of all New Jerseyans.

The demographics of America and New Jersey are rapidly changing, and this is a positive development if we can only find the courage to embrace it.

For those who struggle with this evolving situation, you can turn to your children whose collection of friends and colleagues look starkly different from ours. The scriptures say, and I paraphrase, “out of the mouth of babes reveals the blueprint for a better coexistence filled with exuberance and possibilities.”

Recently, CNBC reported that New Jersey moved to 19th place compared to others across the country on its handling of the economy. I can only imagine if New Jersey had completed its disparity study and implemented goals that would have incentivized public contracting with minority and women- owned businesses like those in New York.

New York spent over $3.2 billion with minority- and women-owned businesses in 2022. Would the findings have had an even greater positive impact on our state’s standing in the CNBC poll? We are hard-pressed to find comparable data in our state. However unofficially, I can state that public contracting with Blacks in New Jersey is less than 3%, and Blacks are at the bottom as suppliers of goods and services with most of New Jersey’s corporations when compared to their peer groups.

The lives of Blacks in New Jersey have had many ebbs and flows, based on those which possess the ROI, and the authority to exercise their discretion in its deployment. The coexistence of Blacks versus others in this country has had many moments of triumph despite the tumultuous history.

I challenge my business colleagues, political leaders, residents and friends who can properly discern factual data on strategies that can potentially realize better outcomes, to find a pathway to embrace these strategies.

We have come too far to allow the narratives, or unsubstantiated claims of a few, to overshadow factual empirical forward thinking. Our best days are only ahead when we pursue excellence through best practices and collaboration versus isolation and denial. This is the blueprint for our collective success!

LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP

The Organized Leader

A s organizations continue to pivot, innovate and find new and creative ways of approaching how they do business, one thing is for sure: The most successful leaders ensure that they have motivated, dedicated and yes, organized, people surrounding them to help keep the ship on track.

While the top leader in an organization needs to be engaged in day-to-day operations, that is not the same as being involved in virtually every detail. They should be the key visionary defining goals, expectations and action plans, but then they must surround themselves with professionals who execute and don’t require someone monitoring their progress every day.

The following leadership and communication traits are required for those who may not fall at the top of an organizational chart, but are those who are expected to work independently, efficiently and in an organized fashion to move the organization forward:

• Strategically communicate. Every team member within an organization plays a critical role in filtering and editing information not only to their peers, but also to the CEO or team manager when appropriate. This is a tricky area, because even though it is important for the CEO to have access to important data, he or she can be overwhelmed with too much information. Therefore, the organized leader ensures the essential information is delivered while omitting extra details that could just become noise or a distraction.

• Follow up and follow through. If you are assigned a project, it is your responsibility to create deadlines, deliverables and benchmarks and agree upon when and how you will be reporting back to the CEO or your team on your progress. There is nothing worse for a CEO than to continually have to go to a team member and ask, “Where are you with project XYZ?” As teams continue to shrink and people are doing more with less, it is more important than ever that you own your specific projects and responsibilities and then share key updates with those involved when appropriate.

• Embrace feedback. Becoming an organized, effective and efficient leader does not happen by accident. It takes discipline, focus and an overall commitment to continuous improvement. One of the best ways to improve as a leader, communicator or manager is to proactively seek feedback from others around you. For example, ask someone on your team, “Bob, what specifically can I be doing to better assist you with the Jones Project?” Or, ask your CEO, “Please identify one area where I can improve as a leader/communicator.” Be open to the feedback and then use it to become an even stronger leader on behalf of your organization.

• Confront issues. Too often we ignore a problem in the hopes it will go away. In any aspect of life, whether at work or at home, it is much more productive to confront issues or challenges head on. Whether it is a missed deadline, an error in a proposal or a dissatisfied client, the best approach is to accept the fact that there is a problem, identify potential solutions, and then take action to address it. Doing so decreases worry and will allow you to move on to other tasks at hand.

• Get organized. While this may seem obvious, becoming an organized and efficient leader requires you to get organized. Whether that is decluttering your desk, clearing out your email inbox, using an online program or app to track your projects, or simply keeping a steno pad where you prioritize your “to-do” list, the key is to be intentional with how you work so that you can have a clear mind and be more efficient in all you do.

There Is No Health Without Mental Health

More than one out of every four Americans will experience a mental illness during their lifetime. Mental or emotional challenges can affect all aspects of our lives. Mental illness can also take its toll on our physical health and cause stomach and back pain, headaches, insomnia, brain fog, GI issues, and more.

As one of the premier providers of behavioral health services in the state, the team at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center recognize that when treating mental illness, a complete mind-body approach works best for improving overall health. The Medical Center offers diversified treatment programs that offer individualized care in a warm, supportive atmosphere for children, teens, adult, and geriatric patients.

For those who need intensive treatment and observation, the Medical Center offers adult and geriatric units that are structured to meet the unique needs of those who will benefit from a safe and protective environment. Bergen New Bridge has a full range of services from withdrawal management, inpatient and outpatient treatment, medication-assisted treatment, and peer recovery to support those facing substance use disorders.

One of the newest behavioral health services at Bergen New Bridge is the Center for Eating Disorders & Body Positivity which offers outpatient individualized care focusing on obtaining a positive body image and understanding how food and nutrition affect people. The Hope & Resiliency Center for Youth recently launched a Body Positivity Program for those ages 13 to 17. The Center’s primary mission is to address at-risk adolescents’ unique mental health needs to improve their ability to function successfully at home, at school, and in the community.

Bergen New Bridge Medical Center is focused on decreasing the stigma around mental illness, educating people about mental health issues, and promoting available resources and support for individuals struggling with mental health conditions. Latest Innovations for Improving Orthopedic Patient Care

In the field of orthopedics, Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), is leading the way in the research, development and utilization of innovative treatments and new technologies to improve patient care. Consistently ranked No. 1 in the country for orthopedics by U.S. News & World Report, people have come to HSS from around the world for life-changing surgery when other doctors gave them no hope.

The expertise at HSS extends to nonsurgical care as well, with specialists who treat conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system. About 25% of people who come to HSS for a second opinion regarding surgery are told that it is not their best option.

“Our goal is to provide the most appropriate treatment, which may or may not be surgery at that time, and our patients appreciate a holistic approach,” explains Michael Ast, MD, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in knee and hip replacement at HSS Paramus. “The best treatment plan for a given patient often involves nonsurgical care by highly specialized doctors in primary care sports medicine, physiatry or rheumatology either by itself or in conjunction with a surgical plan.”

Convenient Locations for

New Jersey Residents

HSS outpatient locations in Paramus and Saddle River provide access to the same physicians who see patients at the main hospital in Manhattan. Although surgeries are performed in New York City, patients can schedule their consultations, X-rays, MRIs, pre- and post-surgical care, and rehabilitation at HSS Paramus.

Technology and Innovation to Benefit Patients

Increasing numbers of orthopedic surgeons are using robotics, computer navigation and augmented reality (AR) to enhance precision, accuracy and predictability. An orthopedic surgeon at HSS performed the first knee replacement using AR in the United States in 2020. AR refers to digital content, such as a three-dimensional (3D) image, that is superimposed on a user’s view of the physical environment.

It starts with a CT scan to create a 3D model of the patient’s knee to plan and customize the procedure. During surgery, the use of “smart” glasses allows the surgeon to visualize the structures of the knee under the skin and track progress in real time directly on the operative field.

HSS spine surgeons have begun to use AR

“The technology enables improved control and visualization of the patient’s anatomy and critical structures, which can lead to a more precise, efficient surgery and can enhance safety,” explains Gbolabo Sokunbi, MD, a spine surgeon at HSS Paramus and Saddle River. “Its versatility in minimally invasive surgery or hybrid techniques may also allow for quicker recovery because it can be employed in a way that causes less disruption to soft tissues.”

Lending a Hand: Robotic Arm Assists Spine Surgeons

In spine surgery, robotic assistance and computer navigation allow for a more precise procedure, says James Dowdell, MD, a spine surgeon at HSS Paramus and Saddle River.

Detailed images of a patient’s anatomy help plan and customize the procedure prior to surgery. CT and MRI scans create a 3D map of the patient’s spine, and a computer console displays the image in real time during surgery. The orthopedic surgeon uses a robotic arm for guidance, always maintaining full control, Dr. Dowdell explains.

“The system enables the surgeon to make very small incisions that preserve muscles and other structures surrounding the spine, so patients generally experience less pain after surgery, a shorter hospital stay and a quicker return to activities compared to traditional open surgery,” he says.

Robotic assistance and computer navigation are major players in joint replacement surgery.

“The robotic systems allow for the optimal alignment, soft tissue balancing and positioning of the implant – critical to the long-term success of a knee replacement,” explains Steven Haas, MD, chief of the Knee Service at HSS, who also sees patients at HSS Paramus.

“Smart Knee” for Remote Patient Monitoring

A “smart” knee replacement that collects and transmits data to monitor a patient’s recovery from afar became a reality in 2021 when orthopedic surgeons at HSS performed the first knee replacement containing a smart sensor. The device measures steps taken, walking speed, range of motion and other indicators of knee function following surgery.

An innovation in the field of remote patient monitoring, it was the first implantable device approved to collect data on an individual’s progress after a knee replacement. Although the technology doesn’t preclude office visits, it enables the doctor to actively monitor a patient’s recovery with real-world, objective data to supplement their care.

“Remote monitoring can be especially useful during the early post-operative period,” says Dr. Haas. “The earlier you identify a patient who may not be progressing as well as you would like, the sooner you can intervene.”

HSS Innovation Institute

HSS is the only hospital in the United States with an onsite 3D printing center making custom joint replacements to treat the most complex problems. Established through a relationship with LimaCorporate, the FDA-regulated facility has developed custom implants for patients at joint replacement centers around the country.

The endeavor is one of many projects made possible by the HSS Innovation Institute.

“The goal of the institute is to help develop and bring to market the next generation of innovative devices, techniques, and pathways to improve care and address complex problems not only for our own patients, but for individuals everywhere,” says Dr. Ast, who also serves as Chief Medical Innovation Officer at HSS.

In addition to the extraordinary amount of research conducted by HSS physicians, scientists and engineers, the institute forms collaborations with thought leaders, world-class organizations, and leading-edge companies outside of HSS.

One collaboration with global technology leader Zimmer Biomet Holdings, Inc. uses artificial intelligence to develop decision-support tools for robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery.

Evidence-based treatments, technology and surgical skill help to achieve the best patient outcomes, but there is more to the equation, Dr. Ast notes. He points to the culture of excellence and pride at HSS that inspires staff throughout the organization to maintain the highest standards of respectful, compassionate, patient-centered care.

People of all ages will be dancing in the street on Saturday, Sept. 23, to help Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health grow its autism services.

The 23rd annual Let It Grow Benefit Concert will feature a trio of bands playing Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia tunes and raise needed funds for Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health’s Autism CAN (Care. Access. Navigate.), a philanthropic program emphasizing care, access, and navigation across its statewide network.

A portion of the proceeds from the outdoor, 7-hour event will also be donated to Hope For The Warriors and Tracers, the Bergen County Division of Veterans Services.

Let It Grow Business Development Manager Randy May said the idea for an annual tribute concert was born on Aug. 9, 1995, the day Jerry Garcia died. CEO and Founder Paul T. Imbarrato and friends gathered to play and reminisce, just an informal block party jam.

“But coincidentally, a local family needed help, so the idea for a charitable event started,” May said.

Supporting Hackensack Meridian Health

Since then, Hackensack Meridian Health has been a frequent beneficiary, as have other health care nonprofits like the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund. Veterans and other special needs causes like the Tunnel To Towers Foundation have also received donations. May estimates the concerts – which are always a nod to the Grateful Dead – have raised close to $1 million over the years.

“We truly appreciate the support of the Let It Grow Benefit Concert to help raise awareness about autism spectrum disorder (ASD), while providing vital funding that ensure our clinical teams meet our patients and families where they need it most,” said Richard Knupp, vice president of Development, North, Hackensack Meridian Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation and Hackensack Meridian Palisades Medical Center Foundation.

Knupp noted that proceeds will support the health care network’s efforts to create inclusive environments, train team members and provide access to resources to improve the quality of care for children with ASD throughout the state.

Tracers, the Bergen County Division of Veterans Services, will use the funding to supply bus tickets to jobs, assist in preparing veterans for employment, and to fill in gaps in the service delivery system for homeless veterans.

Let it Grow & Autism CAN

Autism CAN was established in 2021 to provide access to the highest level of care, create access and specialized environments sensitive to the unique needs of children on the autism spectrum and help families navigate resources.

The program emphasizes Care, Access and Navigation of Hackensack Meridian Health’s statewide network, specified to the unique needs of children on the autism spectrum and their families.

By creating an inclusive environment, Autism CAN will improve the quality of care for children with ASD throughout New Jersey.

Concert Day Sept. 23

The donation for the day of the concert is $30 per person; free for children 12 and under. Let It Grow is seeking corporate sponsors and welcomes individual and family donations. Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

“This year we’re looking to double what we raised last year. We have more opportunities for sponsors and added a VIP section,” May said.

Each $2,500 VIP section seats eight people and has a table, screen, bar, food and air conditioning.

The event begins at 3 p.m., rain or shine, 52 Ackerson St., River Edge. There will be two stages with continuous live music until 10 p.m., plus children’s activities, food and merchandise for sale. People can bring their own alcohol, but no glass of any kind is permitted.

May said Let it Grow employees cook all the food, sell the swag, and clean up. Many of the musicians are local and donate their time. The River Edge Police support the event and it’s become a big community party.

Bergen New Bridge

offers outpatient Electroconvulsive Therapy program

Hollywood’s depiction of Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a far cry from its modern form.

Today’s ECT has evolved into a valuable treatment recognized by the National Institute of Mental Health, American Psychiatric Association, American Medical Association and the U.S. Surgeon General, and is now offered as outpatient treatment by Bergen New Bridge Medical Center.

Dr. Shahan Sibtain, Chief Psychiatrist - Ambulatory Psychiatry at the Paramus hospital, said inpatient hospitalization is unnecessary under the ambulatory ECT program.

“This is a longtime treatment that has improved over the years,” Dr. Sibtain said of the procedure. “Patients can get in and get out and go home.”

New ambulatory recently launched

While New Bridge has offered inpatient ECT for at least 15 years, the ambulatory program launched just two years ago.

Patients avoid eating or drinking from midnight the night before the 7 a.m. session. The procedure takes just 15 minutes or so, including time for anesthesia to take effect, while sessions last about one hour, with 20 to 30 minutes in the recovery room.

Candidates for ECT include patients with major depression, those with severe suicidal ideation and conditions such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. New Bridge only treats adults with ECT. Dr. Sibtain’s patients range from a college student to an octogenarian.

He said most insurance companies approve the procedure, even without a medication trial, but often, patients have tried other treatments first.

ECT has faster results

Dr. Sibtain noted that while antidepressant medication and psychotherapy can be effective, they generally take four to six weeks to work, compared to about two weeks of ECT, with three outpatient sessions per week.

“They can go for ECT with faster results,” he said, which can prove life-saving for patients at immediate risk of self-injury or suicide.

Last year, New Bridge provided more than 300 ECT sessions, with each patient averaging 10 to 12 sessions.

Once initial sessions are completed, patients can continue maintenance ECT, typically once per month.

“It’s really on an individual basis,” Dr. Sibtain said.

Before the procedure, patients receive a short-acting anesthetic agent, which puts them to sleep for five to 10 minutes, while a muscle relaxant helps stop movement during treatment. The medical team tracks cardiac status through monitoring pads, and places electrodes on the patient’s head. Two electrodes monitor brain waves and two deliver a short, controlled set of electrical pulses for a few seconds, which must produce a generalized seizure to be effective.

After awakening, patients move to the recovery room until their blood pressure, pulse and breathing return to pre-treatment levels and must have someone drive them home.

Dr. Sibtain said side effects can include headaches, body aches and short-term memory loss, which is not permanent.

Treatments have higher response rate

The treatment has shown to improve depression in 70%-90% of patients, a response rate higher than antidepressants.

While ECT remains contentious in some circles – partially stemming from unrealistic media portrayals – Dr. Sibtain said modern methods are safe and effective.

“There’s always a challenge with mental health as a whole,” he said. “What we need is more education and awareness regarding this treatment.”

Hudson Regional Hospital expands Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

A newly renovated and expanded cutting-edge Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Hudson Regional Hospital offers early diagnoses, treatments and procedures that can potentially save limbs and lives.

Known as a cath lab, the 10,000-square-foot facility at the Secaucus hospital marked its opening with a ribbon-cutting in June and is gradually phasing in procedures as approved by the state, said Dr. Nizar Kifaieh, president and CEO of Hudson Regional Hospital.

“Right now, we’re in the initial phase,” Dr. Kifaieh said, referencing diagnostic testing for heart conditions. In the next stage, interventions for those conditions will be performed at the lab.

Investing in groundbreaking tech

Since taking over the facility at 55 Meadowlands Parkway in 2018, Hudson Regional Hospital has invested $50 million in capital improvements to secure the most groundbreaking technologies available.

The hospital’s investment in new technologies also includes the Institute of Robotic Surgery featuring the Da Vinci XI Robotic System, ExcelsiusGPS and the Mazor Robotic Guidance System as well as access to more physician groups, and a patient coordination department to ensure that all patients who come to the facility for any services can receive cohesive and seamless treatment for all their health care needs.

“The implementation of this new technology will support early diagnosis of coronary disease, as well as provide for treatment of peripheral vascular disease, neuro intervention (acute stroke), and much more,” Dr. Kifaieh said. “This investment will allow us to treat patients’ heart conditions with minimally invasive procedures, resulting in shorter and easier recovery periods.”

At the laboratory, doctors perform testing and procedures to diagnose and treat cardiovascular conditions, which require a specialized facility due to the complexity of the cardiovascular system and the heart itself.

The cath lab not only offers the latest in state-of-the-art technology, but expert cardiovascular care from a team of cardiologists, nurses, and radiologists who are trained in a variety of diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures, Dr. Kifaieh said.

Lab Director Dr. Vladimir Znamensky specializes in coronary interventions, and treats a wide range of vascular diseases, including peripheral vascular procedures for peripheral arterial disease, and radiofrequency venous ablation of venous insufficiency, when leg veins don’t allow blood to flow back to the heart, causing blood to pool in a patient’s legs.

The lab includes digital X-ray imaging systems and a range of other diagnostic tools that can view the arteries and blood flow. For example, the Siemens ARTIS icono biplane is an advanced imaging system used in endovascular procedures: minimally invasive catheter techniques used on arteries or veins.

Diagnosing peripheral vascular conditions

Dr. Kifaieh noted that the hospital is conducting outreach for conditions such as peripheral vascular disease, an abnormal narrowing of the arteries, most commonly in the legs.

Chronic smokers, those with kidney disease or diabetes may disregard symptoms that could be treatable, he said.

“If you walk 100 feet and start having pain or cramping in your legs, (patients) might attribute that to arthritis or aging,” Dr. Kifaieh said, adding that the condition could actually be peripheral vascular disease, which can worsen over time.

The lab offers diagnostic testing and treatment to open the blood vessels, and the hospital launched a limb-saving education program for earlier diagnoses.

Dr. Kifaieh also looks forward to the lab’s stroke phase for acute stroke interventions, treatment of cerebral aneurysms and more.

While Hudson Regional already offered testing and procedures, he said, “now we have this to add a second and third layer of capability to the process.”
