Exploring Manatee County, a Gem on the Gulfcoast

W ith a population quickly approaching 450,000 residents and an influx of more than a million tourists a year, word is most certainly out about this paradise we call Manatee County. Generations attempted to keep our gorgeous beaches a family secret, but the world was bound to see our sun-soaked selfies snapped from the surf of Anna Maria Island.

And while most newcomers flock to visit our beaches, many will stay for Manatee County’s small-town charm and character. For as much as the area has grown and transformed over the past 25 years, residents love this community more than ever. While a long weekend is only enough time to scratch the surface, it’s just enough to get a sense of where you’ll want to spend more time when you establish roots here. So, throw on some flip flops and stay awhile.

DAY 1

Manatee County’s original settlers were onto something when they built homes along the sandy banks of the Manatee River minutes east of present-day downtown Bradenton. Back then being near the river was about convenient access to the water for drinking, fishing, cleaning, and (eventually) boating. These days Bradenton’s downtown is the perfect place to establish a base that’s close to just about everything. It’s also Manatee County’s cultural center with a growing variety of restaurants, shops, and accommodations.

Stroll the Riverwalk, 10 a.m.

Grab a room with a river view at one of downtown’s sparkling hotels. Once you’ve checked in, throw on some comfy clothes and sneakers before heading to the Riverwalk, a 1.5-mile strip of park and green space that’s always buzzing with activity.

Lunch on Old Main, noon

If staying at a hotel downtown you’re a very short walk from Old Main Street, the absolute heart of Bradenton. Along Old Main you’ll find shops, pubs, and restaurants with plenty of shaded outdoor seating. On Saturdays from October through May, the Bradenton Public Market hosts dozens of vendors who sell locally grown fruits, vegetables, plants, organic products, delicious treats, and even goodies for pets.

An afternoon at the Bishop, 2 p.m.

The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature is the largest natural and cultural history museum on the Gulf Coast. There you’ll see fossils from Florida’s earliest mammal and marine species, an impressive collection of archeological artifacts and the Planetarium featuring one of the most advanced all-digital projection systems in the world. Oh, and did we mention manatees? The Bishop serves as a second-stage rehab facility where manatees rest and reach full health before returning to the wild. Plan your visit around one of the Planetarium’s must-see Laser Light Nights where dazzling light shows dance to tunes from classic rock and pop stars.

Sunset cruise, 5 p.m.

Catch the brand new Gulf Islands Ferry in the late afternoon for a breezy trip to Anna Maria Island (AMI). (A $6 one-way trip to the island takes about 50 minutes. Round trip tickets are $10.) Once you’ve reached AMI, you’ve got a world of dining options for fresh seafood and a cocktail. Settle in with your beverage just in time for sunset. Just make sure to finish dessert in time to catch one of the day’s last ferries back to Bradenton.

DAY 2

Because of the ground we want to cover on Day 2, this is the only day on the itinerary you’ll need a vehicle. But we’re not talking about a long day trip, only a 15-minute drive to some of the area’s emerging hotspots and pastimes.

Historic Palmetto, 9 a.m.

Once you’ve crossed the Manatee River into Palmetto, grab breakfast at one of this historic farming town’s quaint diners. Head to Manatee County Agricultural Museum where history buffs will love an authentic glimpse into Manatee County’s agricultural past. If history’s not your thing, take a walk through family friendly Sutton Park or explore Felts Audubon Preserve run by the Manatee County Audubon Society. Audubon has documented sightings of nearly 200 avian species there depending on the time of year.

Midday in Ellenton & Parrish, 11 a.m.

Five minutes east of Palmetto along U.S. 301 is Ellenton, where thrift shoppers will have a field day at any of the town’s antique malls, flea markets, and consignment shops. There’s a growing number of restaurants, shops, and lodging in this area, plus it’s close to the interstate for those breezing through the area. Beyond Ellenton is fast-growing Parrish where you’ll find Gamble Creek Farms. Once there, you’ll be in for a treat! This 26-acre farm is a source for fresh produce and locally grown items much of which is served in the restaurants of Anna Maria Island. Gamble Creek is also a fascinating look into sustainable farming and the good people who run the farm let virtually nothing go to waste. (Distract the health enthusiasts in your party when you make a quick stop at the bakery for a mouth-watering treat.)

Fore! 1 p.m.

Spend the afternoon on the links. With 20 public golf courses around Manatee County, you can book a tee time in just about any part of town you like. Or if you’ve got an eye on improving your game, set an appointment at NXGEN and Conaway Golf Performance to get tips from the Pros.

Down on Main Street, 5 p.m.

Lakewood Ranch has been nationally awarded for being one of the finest master planned communities in the state. In addition to golf and quality of life, the dining and retail side of the community is thriving, and nowhere is that more evident than along Main Street. It’s like an upscale outlet mall with trendy shops, international cuisine, outdoor cafes, a movie theater, and regular live entertainment. It’s truly a fun place to walk, talk shop, and people watch throughout the year. You can easily spend several hours around Main Street without seeing everything.

For the truly adventurous, we recommend popping into Linger Lodge where people from far and wide come to dine among the wild array of taxidermied creatures throughout the restaurant. Two outside covered and screened decks provide gorgeous views of the Braden River. If solitude is more your thing, skip the buzzing restaurant scene and throw on some workout clothes for a quiet run or stroll around Nathan Benderson Park. Benderson is also great for birdwatching and freshwater fishing. The park is open to the public at no cost from dawn to dusk
each day.

DAY 3

You’ve got the option of ditching your vehicle again on Day 3 if you choose to hop aboard the Gulf Islands Ferry to Anna Maria Island. Once you’re there, you can easily get from the north end of Anna Maria to its southern tip via the complimentary Anna Maria Trolley. The Trolley runs 365 days a year from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. along Gulf Drive every 20 minutes from the Anna Maria City Pier to Coquina Beach.

Stroll along Pine Avenue, 10 a.m.

Start your day at the northern end of the Island with some sustainable shopping along Pine Avenue. The half-mile street is lined with eco-conscious shops, cafes, and restaurants. The stroll along Pine should only take 45 minutes unless you’re doing some serious shopping. When you’re finished, cross Bay Boulevard and take a short walk along the City Pier where you’ll see fishermen and pelicans go head to head for the catch of the day.

Browse and brunch along Bridge Street, noon

The City of Bradenton Beach is located on Anna Maria’s southern end and here you’ll find some of the island’s best shopping and dining. Historic Bridge Street in particular offers a ton of options, from seaside massage packages, Segway tours, artisan shops, trendy seafood restaurants, and even dive bars.

Afternoon by the sea, 3 p.m.

You can’t NOT visit the beach when you go to Anna Maria Island. With warm waters, gentle waves and soft white sand, the beaches of Anna Maria are second to none in Florida. If you’re into shell collecting, visit Coquina Beach. Fishing and frolicking in the water or enjoying a game of beach volleyball are best further north at Manatee Beach. Or, if you just want to prop your folding chair in the sand with a good book and a cooler nearby, Bean Point on the northern tip of Anna Maria is your best bet for solitude.

An evening in Longboat Key, 6 p.m.

Longboat Key boasts some of Manatee County’s finest dining and most gorgeous beaches. So whether you’ve packed for an elegant night on the town or a breezy picnic on the beach, Longboat Key is the ideal place for a night without the kids.

Other ideas

There’s no way to experience all you need to do in Manatee County in just three days. So consider a few alternative ideas to fill a half day if you’re looking for some truly unique stories to take home. There’s no shortage of things to do if you’re staying in Bradenton’s downtown core, but if you want to get away from the crowds and traffic, take a drive to rural Myakka City. Myakka’s Elephant Ranch offers up-close encounters with the majestic animals and educates visitors on elephant conservation “from tusk to tail.” On Day 2, if trains are a draw, Parrish is home to the Florida Railroad Museum which continues to operate despite a large expansion project that’s underway. Tiny travelers will love the enormous locomotives and railcars from yesteryear on display. The highlight of any visit to this museum, though, is hopping aboard the train for one of the 90-minute trips to nearby Willow. Or head over to the University Park area along Manatee County’s southern border; the four-mile stretch of University Parkway west of I-75 offers a huge array of shopping and dining options.

If being a beach bum isn’t your thing, visit the fishing village of Cortez and the Florida Maritime Museum on Day 3. Inside the museum you’ll learn the rich history of the seaside village complete with navigational instruments, fishing gear, and the seashell collection of one of the town founders. Cortez is one of Florida’s oldest commercial fishing villages and seeing it will give you a new appreciation for your next seafood sampler. s

A bright future

District Welcomes New Superintendent

The School District of Manatee County is one of the 100 largest school districts in the nation with more than 52,000 students. The district is also Manatee County’s largest employer with more than 6,000 employees.

The district is made up of 50 traditional public schools, 15 charter schools and one of the most highly-regarded adult and career educational institutions in the nation – Manatee Technical College.

During the past year, the district welcomed a new superintendent, Dr. Jason Wysong. Superintendent Wysong was sworn in on July 3, 2023, and he came to Manatee County after serving as Deputy Superintendent in Seminole County, Florida, an A-rated school district north of Orlando. As Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Wysong was responsible for leading K-12 instruction and organizing strategic action across all district departments and schools in the Seminole school system.

Dr. Wysong’s priorities as superintendent in Manatee County include enhancing student safety and campus security; improving student outcomes in core subject areas; ensuring that every graduate has a plan for their future; and maintaining the school district’s reputation for providing high-quality opportunities for students in the arts, athletics, and career and technical education—all while showing respect for taxpayers by operating the school district with fiscal transparency and fidelity.

As stated in its strategic plan, the district’s vision is to be “an exemplary student-focused school system that develops lifelong learners to be globally competitive.”

One of the primary ways the district pursues this vision is by offering unique and exciting academic programs and extracurricular activities that help students prepare for the jobs of tomorrow.

Like teaming with Apple Inc., co-founder Steve Wozniak to make Palm View K-8 the first WOZ Ed Pathway school in Florida, and one of the very first in the nation. WOZ Ed schools offer elementary students opportunities to receive instruction in areas like coding, engineering, drones, cyber-security and mobile development.

Or placing such a strong emphasis on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) and career and technical education initiatives that Manatee County students regularly dominate state and national academic and technology-oriented competitions.

Also, in 2022, the district opened the world’s first Guy Harvey Academy of Arts & Science at Anna Maria Elementary School. The academy was started in collaboration with world-renowned marine wildlife artist and conservationist Dr. Guy Harvey and the curriculum was created in cooperation with the Guy Harvey Foundation. The academy aims to use an art, math and science-based curriculum to educate and engage young students on the importance of preserving oceans and marine life while learning about the world’s environment.

The School District of Manatee County is financially sound, and thanks to the community’s renewal of a $1 million referendum in 2021, starting teachers in Manatee County are among the highest paid in the state. All Manatee District teachers have received pay increases each of the last six years.

Why You Should Make Manatee County Your Company HQ

Manatee County has the beaches, bistros, bars and cultural attractions to keep up with just about any other growing waterfront town in Florida. While there’s plenty to do here for families and visitors, the Bradenton Area also has plenty to offer prospective business owners. A 2024 study measuring median income, home value and investment income analyzed the places in Florida that have experienced the most wealth generation over the last 10 years and Manatee County ranked inside the top 10.

But beyond the 10,000 people moving here each year, what makes Manatee County an attractive place to do business? Here are three of the top reasons why.

❶ Proximity to trade routes

Interstate 75 skirts the perimeter of Manatee County giving travelers and shipping companies easy access to one of Florida’s two primary north-south arteries. State transportation officials are investing billions of dollars in improvements to I-75 including the expansion of on/off ramps throughout the region.

At the northern entrance to Manatee County, SeaPort Manatee moves more than 11 million tons of cargo each year including fresh produce, forestry, petroleum and citrus juice products, steel, automobiles and more. The Port adds more than $5.1 billion in regional economic impact each year and helps create more than 37,000 jobs in the region.

Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, on our southern border, is the fastest growing airport in the U.S. A $200 million expansion project – including $100 million for five new terminals and a new baggage claim area – is scheduled for completion in late 2024. When completed the project will boost SRQ’s capacity from 4.5 million to 7.5 million passengers a year.

❷ A burgeoning sports sector industry

Manatee County has become the ideal training ground for several northern athletic teams wanting to escape the frost and chill of winter. Collegiate crew teams like Harvard and Notre Dame can be seen training on the smooth waters of the Manatee River in December when home waters have frozen over. IMG Academy in southwest Manatee County has become the country’s preeminent training school for young athletes, many of whom go on to become collegiate and professional superstars. Bradenton’s LECOM Park is the Spring Training home to the Pittsburgh Pirates and, during baseball’s regular season, their single A affiliate Bradenton Marauders. Premier Sports Campus, just east of Lakewood Ranch, is equipped with 23 FIFA-regulation fields that host some of the region’s biggest soccer and lacrosse tournaments. Sports tourism generates an estimated $300 million a year in Manatee County and helps fill hotel rooms when traditional tourists have gone north for the summer.

The new Gulf Islands Ferry water taxi service is making it easier than ever to go between downtown Bradenton and Anna Maria Island beaches.

Thanks to its close proximity to Interstate 75, Manatee County is within driving distance to other popular Florida destinations – just one hour from Tampa, less than two hours from Orlando and about 3.5 hours from Miami.

SARASOTA BRADENTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (SRQ)

If you prefer to fly, the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) offers flights on Air Canada, Allegiant, American Airlines, Avelo, Breeze, Delta, Frontier Airlines, jetBlue, Southwest, Sun Country Airlines, and United. The airport is growing just as rapidly as the area it serves and over the past 5 years has expanded from 6 airlines to 11 and from 12 nonstop destinations to 53. The new $73 million five-gate terminal expansion should be completed by the end of 2024 and open to the public in January 2025. The new terminal will include a four-lane security checkpoint and five boarding hold rooms with 970 seats, as well as restaurants, cafes, and a bar.

“The continuation of record-breaking numbers demonstrates the need for expansion and represents a major shift in how SRQ is transforming to serve the needs of our fast-growing community,” said Rick Piccolo, President and CEO of SRQ. He said even with the rapid growth, expansions and improvements, the airport prides itself on maintaining a “boutique-type experience” for travelers.

MANATEE COUNTY AREA TRANSIT (MCAT)

From Parrish to Longboat Key, Myakka to Anna Maria – and everywhere in between – the award-winning public transportation service helps travelers have a smooth ride. And the best news is, it’s free! The Fare Free service includes the Longboat Key Shuttle, the Port Manatee ConneXion Shuttle, the Skyway ConneXion, the MCAT Handy Bus and all other fixed routes.

Other amenities include free trolley services offered on Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key, and a beach express available on Sundays and holidays.

GULF ISLANDS FERRY

The Gulf Islands Ferry service connecting Bradenton to Anna Maria Island is making it a breeze to get to our popular destinations. The convenient ferry provides guests with a scenic boat trip to amazing beaches, boutiques, restaurants, museums, galleries rather than struggling with traffic and parking.

The two 49-passenger vessels named “Downtown Duchess” and “Miss Anna Maria” ferry riders between the Downtown Bradenton Riverwalk Pier, the Anna Maria City Pier, and the Historic Bridge Street Pier in Bradenton Beach. The Gulf Islands Ferry operates every Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00am - 9:30pm, year-round.

The new ferry service has been an incredible success with the main challenge being the weather. With ridership increasing, there is already talk of adding a third ferry that might be better equipped for inclement weather.
