Lodi Wines Win!

Lodi once again proved its excellence at the 2025 California Commercial Wine Competition.

This year, 30 Lodi-based wines earned top honors at the 2025 California Commercial Wine Competition, receiving prestigious Double Gold and Gold awards across a diverse range of grape varieties. From bold reds to crisp whites and luscious rosés, Lodi’s winemakers showcased the exceptional character and craft that make this region a must-visit for wine lovers everywhere. We are also proud to say that many of this year’s recipients are Lodi District Chamber members! (Known members are listed in red.)

6 STEPS FROM GRAPE TO GLASS

There are more than 10,000 grapes in the world and about 1,000 varieties that can make a good wine. Thankfully, as many as 136 of those varieties are grown right here in Lodi.

But what else does it take to create the perfect vino? In addition to the best grapes, lots of skill, passion and agricultural know-how, it takes a number of steps - executed with refinement.

Lists like this might suggest that making wine is easy, but that oversimplification doesn’t account for quality. Lodi Winegrape Commission Executive Director Stuart Spencer grew up in the wine business. His family has been making wine for more than 50 years, 30 of those in Lodi.

“It’s easy to make wine,” said Spencer, whose Mother Nature Commission represents more than 700 wine growers. “But making a very good wine is challenging. You’re dealing with mother nature and variability. It takes skill and craft.”

Yet, when most people sit down to enjoy dinner and a glass of their favorite wine, they may never think about the steps taken to get it from vine to table. “If it delivers pleasure, we’re happy. One of the things about wine that makes it special is it really can reflect the place, history and culture,” he said. “It can tell a deeper story, or just be an enjoyable, pleasurable beverage.”

1. Harvest

The grapes are picked from the vines when they reach the desired ripeness.

2. Crush

The grapes are crushed to break the skins and release the juice.

3. Ferment

Yeast is added to the must, and it converts the sugar into alcohol.

4. Age

The wine is aged, typically in barrels or tanks, to develop its flavor and complexity.

5. Rack/Filter

The wine is transferred to a clean container to remove sediment.

6. Bottle

Finally, it's bottled, corked and ready to serve.

Enjoy a day walking through the relaxed Japanese Gardens, taking in the Cherry Blossom trees and watching the koi pond. This popular wedding destination, located within Micke Grove Zoo, also has a tea house and picnic pavilion on the premises.

Visit the venerable Lodi Mission Arch, which was built in 1907 by architect E.B. Brown. At the time, the 40-foot arch cost $500 to build, but today, it is a priceless entryway into this great town. Built to be the formal entrance to carnival grounds decades ago, today it is a national and state landmark and is topped with a 23.7 karat gold-leafed California Bear.

Attend the Lodi Sandhill Crane Festival

For more than 25 years, Lodi’s Sandhill Crane Festival draws thousands of people to celebrate the return of the cranes. Held in early November, this festival includes presenters, workshops, tours and an art show and exhibits that highlight these feathered wonders.

The Lodi Sandhill Crane Reserve, also known as the Phil and Marilyn Isenberg Sandhill Crane Reserve or Woodbridge Ecological Reserve, is the place to splash around, relax or do whatever floats your boat - or kayak! It’s also the perfect place to spot Sandhill cranes during winter migration or evening fly-ins. Additionally, the reserve offers a variety of viewing opportunities and tours.

Lodi Lake Park offers walking paths, a boat launch, places to take in nature, including a beach, and a playground. Fees are collected for vehicle entry. A self-serve pay station is available directly north of the entry gate if no gate attendant is on duty. Visitors can get annual passes ($50 per calendar year); otherwise, daily parking fees are $5/a car. Boat launch (per trailer and/or motorized craft) is $13/day and includes the vehicle entrance fee.

The Lodi Boathouse is your adventure hub for all things paddling-related, offering kayak and stand-up paddle board rentals and tours on the beautiful Mokelumne River. There are also picnic areas and shelters available for rent.
