A New Favorite Place to Eat and Meet

2228 Shawnee Road used to be home to Ike’s Great American Restaurant, a family friendly spot with a nice patio and good ol’ Mid-American-style food. But when Ike’s closed, the 1971 building sat empty. That is, until Julie Driesbach rescued it.

“When we first walked into the partially gutted building,” Driesbach said of when she and her business partner first saw the space. “I didn’t know where to start. Allan began measuring and drafting up building plans while we started demoing anything we couldn’t reuse. As it turned out, we gutted the entire building including plumbing, electrical, interior walls, drywall and insulation. And when I say we – we did it ourselves – with the help of our kids when they came to visit.” It was a labor of love with blood, sweat and tears. But when they finished, Shawnee Station, a bar, coffee shop and grill opened. And the community had a new favorite place to eat.

But Shawnee Station wasn’t Driesbach’s first retail venture.

“I had been living in Circleville since 2005 and the kids were growing up and becoming more independent,” she said. “I had always loved coffee, and a local coffee shop went up for sale in 2009. I purchased the shop, which was relatively established. Over the subsequent 10 years, we became part of the Circleville community, and our business grew year over year. In 2019, we moved to Lima for Allan’s job, and I sold the Circleville restaurant (Scioto Valley Coffee). After living in Lima for about 18 months, I became restless at the same time the old Ike’s restaurant went up for sale. Allan has eight years of restaurant experience and with my knowledge in the coffee business, we decided to combine the two and create a place where good friends and great food come together.”

Shawnee Station has something for just about everyone. From juicy burgers to fresh salads, kids’ meals and vegetarian options. There are also beer, wine and spirits on tap as well as Crimson Cup Coffee, which you can get hot, over ice or even frozen.

“We have our favorite restaurants and dishes from all the places we’ve lived before,” Driesbach said. “Our goal was to recreate some of those items. We spent months on the recipes and sourcing ingredients. We source locally as much as possible. All our proteins are brought in fresh twice per week. Our salads are prepared fresh, daily. We use only the finest ingredients to create some of the best-tasting examples of your favorite items from pork tenderloin sandwiches, burgers, gyros, chicken, fried bologna, with vegetarian options and homemade soups.”

Recently, Shawnee Station extended breakfast hours and its morning menu. 

“We are now serving a full breakfast menu seven days a week,” Driesbach said. “Similar to the lunch and dinner menu, we serve the finest ingredients, starting with organic eggs, all fresh proteins and fresh fruit. Our most popular item is the breakfast bowl, which is a fresh-baked biscuit topped with hash browns, homemade sausage gravy, two eggs and shredded cheese. We are now working to add omelets and pancakes to our menu, so look for those in the near future.

“We’ve lived in several communities through the years, and some of our favorite restaurants have been family-friendly, locally owned places serving great food and beverages,” she added. “We wanted to bring that experience to the Shawnee community.”

But that’s not all Shawnee Station has done for the community. When a beloved team member passed suddenly, Driesbach created a Go Fund Me account to help pay for funeral expenses.

“We had an employee and her daughter both working for us,” she explained. “The mother was one of our cooks and the daughter was a dishwasher. When the daughter passed unexpectedly, one of the ways we tried to support our colleague was to do a Go Fund Me. We appreciate all the community support.” They raised almost $10,000 for the family. 

But Shawnee Station is also a place to hang out and be entertained while enjoying a drink and maybe some of those thick-cut potato wedges or chicken wings.

“We have trivia nights, karaoke nights, live music and other entertainment as a means to create a family-fun environment,” Driesbach said. “These are targeted for all audiences, and we see all ages, groups of friends and whole families participate.” 

For Driesbach, being part of the community, also means being a part of the Chamber of Commerce.

“Belonging to the Chamber has helped us meet other business owners in the Lima area, which provides networking opportunities,” Driesbach said. “We seek out these other businesses when we need goods or services and many of them have become great customers of ours.”

Where Green Thumbs (and Beautiful Spaces) Flourish

Adding living greenery to your home does more than fill an empty corner—research shows plants actually boost your health and well-being.

Plants can reduce stress, freshen the air and bring a sense of calm to your space. But if you’ve been avoiding the real thing because of a less-than-green thumb, stop by Leaf & Luxe in downtown Lima. Owner Miranda Oden will help you find plants you’ll love—and teach you to keep them thriving like a pro.

Oden and her sister, Melissa Sherrick, opened Leaf & Luxe in 2023. Though Sherrick left the business to focus on family, their original mission, “promoting positivity with feel-good greenery and helping others to create a space that is comfortable, happy, inviting and beautiful,” is very much alive and thriving.

Leaf & Luxe offers a wealth of healthy houseplants, plant accessories and plant care products, and Oden is always on hand to offer tips and instruction on selection and care.

“I love helping customers pick plants that aren’t just beautiful but also fit their lifestyle and space,” she said. “My goal is to take away the intimidation factor—plants are tougher than most people realize, and some actually like a little neglect!”

And what about people without a green thumb? Oden gets that not everyone is comfortable caring for living greenery. It’s why she’s so dedicated to being the best matchmaker when it comes to plants and people.

“My customers appreciate that I stock healthy, pest-free houseplants of many types and varieties,” she said. “They love that they can find uncommon plants here as well—the kind that makes your guests ask, ‘Where’d you get that?’”

Beyond Greenery – Gifts, Décor and More

Leaf & Luxe shoppers will also love exploring the store’s unique (and constantly changing!) selection of home décor and gift items. Down one aisle, you might discover a cozy throw or a selection of scented lotions and body balms. Around the corner, you’ll discover a collection of stunning seagrass baskets. Every display offers something special for your home or for gift-giving.

“I always look for products that add an element of beauty to a space, or interesting items that are unique and different—the items that make great conversation pieces,” Oden shared.

A Passion Rooted in Childhood

Oden’s love of greenery was nurtured in childhood, a time when she loved exploring the outdoors and learning about plants and animals. So, it seemed only natural that, as an adult, she would be motivated to found Leaf & Luxe.

“Personally, I found that bringing a little nature indoors provided my space with a feeling of beauty and comfort,” Oden said. “Caring for my houseplants was therapeutic and calming, and that is what motivated me to open the shop. I wanted to share that experience with people and offer them the opportunity to create their own ‘oasis.’”

Contributing to a Thriving Downtown

Oden loves being a part of the downtown community and the many wonderful attractions that bring people there.

“Downtown areas are only successful when they have interesting places to shop, dine and play, and we wanted to help provide that,” Oden said. “Leaf & Luxe not only provides an inviting space to shop and browse, but we also offer workshops and private events for the community.”

Leaf & Luxe has hosted every type of event from team-building workshops and birthday celebrations to girls’-night-out gatherings and more. Oden loves collaborating with customers to make each event special.
