Making SMILES HAPPEN

A gentle, kind approach keeps patients happy and healthy

Dr. Mary Wiechart has been a dentist for nearly a decade, but it was when she set out on her own three years ago that her vision for what a practice can and should be really came into sharp focus.

The result? Wiechart Dental Smile Studio in Spencerville, Ohio, a practice that really puts families first.

Wiechart comes from a long line of business owners. Her grandparents owned a pharmacy, while her father owned his own glass company. And having grown up surrounded by businesspeople came in handy when Wiechart set her sights on opening her own office.

She didn’t inherit it, buy it or even buy a patient list. In fact, she has built the Smile Studio from the proverbial ground up.

“I was a full true startup,” she recalled, recounting how, at first, she only worked in the office three days a week, supported by one dental hygienist.

Most startups pride themselves on being “lean and mean,” but Wiechart and her associates call Wiechart Dental Smile Studio “lean and kind.”

Kind, first of all, to patients. “I pride myself on being a dentist who aims to take away some of the anxiety of it,” Wiechart explained. “I tend to attract the patients who are worried, but we take the time to talk to them and explain the procedure. There should be no surprises.”

A recent appointment with a young patient serves as an illustration. “I had a kid in my chair. He’s 7 years old, and we’re getting ready to pull out a tooth, and I’m telling him, ‘OK, this is what’s going to happen next, just like we talked about,’” she recalled. “And he looks at me and he says, ‘I don’t trust you.’ ”

That’s when Wiechart calmly walked her young patient through the plan one more time.

“I stopped and I said, ‘Buddy, we have talked through this three times.’ I said, ‘I have done nothing where I did not tell you what I was going to do. I know this is not fun . . . but there are no surprises about what I’m doing.’ And he looked at me and said, ‘You’re right.’ So then I said, ‘This is what’s going to happen. And then we’re going to be done.’”

That moment codified the dentist’s approach to patient care. “It’s funny,” Wiechart said. “That was one of those moments where you realize, ‘This is why you do what you do.’ ”

Patient care, however, is more than just managing crises. Wiechart stresses that knowing her patients and offering full-service dental care is vital.

“I don’t want to just see you for an emergency . . .,” she said. “I want to see you every six months and see you your whole life. I want to see you when you’re a kid. I have taken over for dentists around here in town who have seen people for 40, 50 years. And I love that about dentistry: It’s the only medical field where you can see people for that long. And it’s just neat to be able to be part of someone’s life like that.”

Being family-first, though, also applies to Wiechart’s approach to her team. She wants the people who work in her practice to have time for their families while also having a career. Her hygienists, for instance, work six-hour shifts rather than the standard eight to enable them to attend school functions and just generally be with their families.

“Our purpose as a company is to thrive as both family members and dental professionals,” she said. “And our values as a company are respect for the whole person, having a team focus, clarity, responsibility, respect and care beyond just a general concern.”

And, it is the essential part of the Wiechart Smile Studio’s approach to caring for, educating and connecting with patients. “I always say that we’re trying to put ourselves
out of business,” Wiechart laughed. “I would love for [patients] to learn why they’ve gotten that cavity or learn why the prior approach failed, so that we can really not let this happen again.”

United Way’s Day of Caring Draws Hundreds of Volunteers

One of the United Way of Greater Lima’s largest volunteer events, the annual Day of Caring, will be held on Friday, Sept. 11, 2026.

Over 300 people volunteered for last year’s event, featuring activities ranging from food distribution to landscaping and cleaning the tombstones of veterans.

“It’s a very exciting day,” said Kristen Hobbs, resource development officer for United Way of Greater Lima, which serves all of Allen County. “You see all these things being done in one day by all these individuals, and everyone’s so appreciative. It’s very fulfilling.”

Projects have included painting, laying of carpet, cabinet assembly, landscaping, food distribution, power washing and packing boxes of food for seniors. Volunteers pick the three projects they would most like to serve and are assigned on
that basis.

Hobbs said one of last year’s most popular projects was a new one: cleaning and renovating tombstones on the graves of veterans.

Little recruitment is required to attract volunteers. Individuals from area nonprofits as well as from churches, schools, businesses and the community sign up to help each year. Organizers contact people who have and have not participated in the past; post information about the event on FaceBook and other social media; and discuss it on television.

“We make a huge impact,” Hobbs said. “We helped over 900 families with the food bank one year.”

Day of Caring Continues to Grow

This will be United Way of Greater Lima’s 10th annual Day of Caring, and Hobbs is in her third year as the event’s organizer. In June, she sent out applications for participation in the projects to local nonprofits, companies and other groups serving various causes and needs. Her ideas for encouraging increased interest include having a food truck this year and possibly seeking donations for operations.

“My goal is to have as many projects as possible and be able to fill them all. Last year, we had around 46 projects submitted with five of them we could not fill,” she said. “A lot of people look forward to the day, and they know it’s coming.”

The event begins with participants meeting at the Ohio State University Lima Campus for a light breakfast, a kickoff and an awards ceremony. They are given information about where they will be serving, while those who don’t make it for breakfast report directly to their sites around Allen County.
