President’s Welcome Message

Welcome to the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, where advocacy, business growth, and community leadership come together.

This past election cycle, the Chamber proudly championed pro-business legislation and policies, working tirelessly to amplify the voices of our members. From supporting critical propositions to engaging in advocacy efforts that create a stronger business environment, we remained steadfast in our mission to be a driving force for progress. This year, we are proud to announce that the Chamber went 10 for 11 on the propositions and measures we took a position on—an achievement that reflects our dedication to advocating for policies that benefit the business community.

We were proud to endorse Councilmember Daryl Supernaw in his successful reelection for the 4th District, further cementing the Chamber’s role as a convener of leaders who is committed to advancing policies that strengthen the business community.

Under the leadership of Sumer Temple, our Chair of the Board, the Chamber is guided by her theme of “Collaboration at the Core: Business Unity Balances Community.” Sumer’s leadership reflects a deep commitment to uniting businesses and the community, demonstrating how collaborative efforts can drive both economic success and meaningful connections that benefit all in Long Beach.

As we look ahead to 2025, the Chamber is excited to deliver impactful programming that supports our business community. Our State of Public Safety event on February 25 will kick off the year, featuring remarks from the Long Beach Chief of Fire and Chief of Police, alongside Sumer Temple, and attended by prominent business leaders and elected officials. In March, Space Beach will bring together leaders in the aerospace industry for a panel discussion on workforce needs and innovation in Long Beach. Spring will also see the prestigious City National Bank Entrepreneur of the Year award on April 24, followed by the Chamber’s 134th Annual Gala on June 26—a celebration of our community’s ongoing success.

Sumer Temple & Temple Family Enterprises

Carrying on the traditions of a family business

Don Temple joined the military service in the wake of World War II, left Kansas, went to boot camp and found paradise.

Boot camp was on Catalina Island, and “he wrote home and said, ‘I’ve died and gone to heaven, I’m never shoveling snow again,’” says his daughter, Sumer Temple, who now runs the company her father started, Temple Family Enterprises, including Don Temple Storage in Long Beach.

In 1968, Don Temple started the storage business that now resides at 3750 E. Spring St.

“The idea for self-storage came to him when he was visiting Temple Bar (AZ) and noticed someone had set up a small facility to help store the belongings of snowbirds so they would have less to haul back and forth between seasons,” Sumer explains.

Don Temple also purchased property at Redondo and Spring, where he built Long Beach U-Store & Lock, still owned and operated by the Temple family.

“At one time, he owned and operated nine facilities across the nation, including Hawaii,” says Temple. “He went on to purchase commercial property at Spring and Palo Verde and the former Elk Lodge on Willow, which is now The Grand. Our family continues to own and manage those properties.”

Sumer began her career in the family business as a teen, when her father put her to work manning the front desk and cleaning out storage units. Upon receiving a bachelor’s degree in communications with an emphasis on organizational leadership from Chapman University, she returned to carry on the business and her father’s legacy.

“We treat our customers like family,” she explains. “Quality customer service is paramount to our success. My father always said that we are not in the business of selling people’s belongings. We strive to work with our customers to avoid auctioning off their units, offering payment plans and flexibility. We offer a service to the residents at a fair price, knowing that we share with our customers and community a symbiotic relationship that needs to be honored.”

A key component of that relationship for Don Temple Storage is security, which Sumer lists as the “No. 1” factor in selecting a storage facility.

“We have invested in state-of-the-art security, from cameras to motion sensors, gated access with keycard, increased lighting, staff on site during business hours and security patrol during non-business hours,” she says. “At the Long Beach U-Store & Lock, each unit is individually alarmed.”

A growing population has driven growth at the storage facilities over the years.

“When Don Temple first opened the facility at 3750 E. Spring St.,” says Sumer, “we had 293 parking spaces and 362 self-storage units. We have expanded by an additional 62 spaces at a lot across from ours. Our Long Beach U-Store facility has 422 inside storage units.”

A big growth area has been and continues to be recreational vehicle storage. RV sales have been on the rise for the past decade, Sumer explains, citing the complications of travel during the pandemic as a factor, as well as RV purchases by Millennials.

While sales have been on the rise,” she says, citing a study she commissioned, “the number of facilities built to keep up with it has stalled greatly.”

Ongoing changes, and just the variety encountered at the storage facilities day after day help keep things interesting for the business’ owner.

“I wake up never quite knowing what the day has in store for me,” Sumer says. “I thrive when challenges are presented and keep calm when chaos arises. … This industry is never boring, and in our 56-year history, we have had many interesting experiences.”

Among the unusual developments: customers sleeping in units, growing marijuana in a unit, even human remains found in a unit.

“It has been a continuous learning experience,” Sumer notes. “The most interesting item we ever had to take possession of after default on payment was a rocket launcher.”

Curiosities aside, Sumer Temple is carrying on her family’s business traditions in a community where she has firm roots, a community where she is deeply involved in public service efforts, including her role as chair of the board of directors of the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.

“Long Beach is a wonderful place to live, raise a family and grow a business,” she offers. “The community and residents have a passion and love for this city that is unsurpassed. We have higher educational institutions that provide a talent pool and talent pipeline for industries and businesses that come to Long Beach to help them grow their businesses to their highest potential. We offer diverse neighborhoods filled with small businesses that reflect the character and culture of the people that live there.”

Parker’s Lighthouse

A beacon for dining enthusiasts

Rising three levels above the Long Beach Harbor, the award-winning Parkers’ Lighthouse stands as a beacon to dining enthusiasts seeking to enjoy a stunning view and an unforgettable meal.

Recipient of honors including Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence, OpenTable’s Diners’ Choice Award and Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Award, Parkers’ Lighthouse is known for its innovative seafood creations, creative sushi and sashimi offerings, extensive two-story wine cellar, and festive and popular happy hours. Parkers’ Lighthouse is also home, on its third floor, to the Queensview Steakhouse, an upscale supper club offering an exquisite array of prime steaks, including a 28-day dry-aged ribeye, chops, lobster and fresh grilled fish. There’s also the storied seafood tower appetizer consisting of oysters on the half-shell, crab claws and ahi tuna poke. All of this can be savored in a warm and elegant setting featuring live jazz.

“Our restaurant is that iconic landmark-style restaurant in Long Beach,” says Stacy Lee, who started some 37 years earlier as a hostess at the restaurant now marking its 40th anniversary and rose through the ranks to become general manager. “So, if you are coming for great mesquite-grilled seafood or sushi, we have a pretty wide variety on our menu, and we have a great waterfront view of the Queen Mary and the Long Beach skyline.”

The atmosphere of the restaurant is another draw all on its own.

“The vibe is casual waterfront dining,” Lee explains, singling out the dining establishment’s extensive patio area. “It’s very relaxed. It’s the waterfront, so people like to come here, relax, have a nice glass of wine, take in the view.”

The view and the vibe are essential to making Parkers’ Lighthouse a destination for important occasions small and large.

“At dinner, it’s bustling with people coming for date nights or convention business, business dinners, special events,” says Lee. “Because we do have private event facilities as well. … Whether people are coming to celebrate a milestone birthday, or they’re coming for a wedding rehearsal dinner, or they’re coming for bridal showers, we draw a lot of those kinds of events.”

Because of the high standards that the staff at Parkers’ Lighthouse and the Queensview Steakhouse strive to maintain, the restaurants offer fine dining, exceptional service and a warm and inviting ambiance that customers can count on time and time again, Lee stresses.

“We have some of the best seafood in the city,” she explains. “And (diners) know that they can count on coming back to this restaurant because they receive good service and the dishes that they’d like. And they know they can come back, and whether they had them two years ago, they’re still going to be prepared the same, it’s going to be consistent.”

That dedication to excellence has helped to make Parkers’ Lighthouse and the Queensview Steakhouse community gems.

“Parker’s Lighthouse has been a pillar in the community for a very long time,” Lee says. “:We have a great relationship with our local businesses, the Long Beach Convention Center, the Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Chamber of Commerce. So we’re very much involved in community events as well as our regular diner, whether it’s a local person or someone traveling from out of the city to come to Long Beach for the day.”

Mixed Miracle Arts

Teaching students of all abilities

As a karate instructor, Angel Figueroa must be a well-coordinated individual. Which makes it ironic that Figueroa stumbled into his life’s work and passion as co-founder and co-owner of Mixed Miracle Arts in Long Beach.

Angel was teaching karate at another studio when his wife Sara became pregnant with the couple’s second child. It was time for a change, and Angel set his sights on law enforcement.

“It was a no-brainer for me because I have a lot of friends in law enforcement and they were all always pushing me to join,” he recalls. “I’ve taught a lot of law enforcement officers how to manage their body and fight and defend themselves.”

During this time, however, that fate intervened when the mother of a teenage child from his old studio, a child on the autism spectrum, called, asking him to continue teaching her child.

“She reached out to me for about three months or so. And I finally said, ‘You know what? Yeah, let me go ahead and I’ll teach your child.’”

He began teaching him, free of charge. But the mother insisted that she would pay, telling the instructor, “If I don’t pay you, I don’t get the funding for him.’”

The lessons continued, the instructor’s reputation spread, and more clients kept coming.

“I got home one day and I told my wife, ‘Hey, I think we just tripped into a business. … I think we’re going to have to do this full-time.’”

It grew from there, grew to the point where a studio became a necessity.

“About two, maybe three months in, I told my wife, ‘I’m not sure how we’ll do this, but we’re going to have a karate studio by the end of the year.’ And that was some time in May or April, and she said, ‘OK, let’s make it happen.’ And sure enough, a few months later, on July 1, we got keys to an actual physical location.”

Mixed Miracle Arts offers training in self-defense and strength training. But there are other points of emphasis in the lessons learned. Emotional control, focus and discipline, awareness, independence and confidence, and, most importantly, fun are all highlighted.

The Figueroas have maintained their dedication to teaching students of all abilities, including those with cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. Neurodiverse (ranging from dyslexia to ADHD to autism) and nonspeaking pupils are all welcome.

“It’s not just teaching them how to kick,” Figueroa explains. “It’s teaching them that it is OK for them not to know, understand, comprehend or get something the first few times we do it. So, we’ll just keep trying it over and over and figuring out a way that works for them. Everyone learns differently. Every single person is different. You have to figure out how that person learns, right? Some people learn by looking, just watching you. Some need to physically do it over and over again. Some people need it to be written down so they can follow steps. Every student’s different and we have to figure it out by saying, ‘OK, how do they learn?’”

Giving their students a comfort zone is key, Figueroa stresses.

“Besides karate, we’re teaching them that they have a safe area to come and train and learn how to ultimately defend themselves if they ever need to.”

And in the interest of reaching more students who would benefit from what they offer, they are now looking to take Mixed Miracle Arts to nonprofit status.

“I feel like I can reach more students that way,” Angel says, “where the families are not held back by our pricing, because we are a bit more expensive than your traditional karate studio. … For that reason, I feel that moving into that nonprofit sector, where I can then reach out to people and businesses, to build some funds, I feel like I could definitely reach out to more students without having to worry about the families themselves having to put that money out there.”

And, with the support of his wife and family, Angel Figueroa, who earned his black belt as a teen, is looking to pay it forward to those who might not otherwise have the opportunity.

“I like teaching,” he says, “and giving back what was given to me from an early start.”

Long Beach Day Nursery Designated a Legacy Business by the City of Long Beach

Long Beach Day Nursery (LBDN), a cornerstone of early childhood education in the community since 1912, has been officially recognized as a Legacy Business by the City of Long Beach. This prestigious designation honors LBDN’s over a century long commitment to providing quality childcare and education services to families in Long Beach. The recognition was formally announced at an event hosted by Long Beach Heritage and the City of Long Beach Economic Development Department on Thursday, October 30th from 5:30 PM to 7:30 p.m. The ceremony, hosted by Roxanne’s, featured Mayor Rex Richardson, along with Long Beach Heritage board members and other dignitaries who honored LBDN and other newly designated Legacy Businesses. Executive Director Jennifer Harper, Communications and Development Manager Amanda Fruta, and Honorary Board Member and 2021–2022 Board President Nancy Hays accepted the award. The event also recognized the transfer of the Legacy Business Program from Long Beach Heritage to the City of Long Beach Long Beach Economic Development Department. “Long Beach proudly recognizes the invaluable contributions of our longstanding businesses,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “Legacy Businesses are the heart of our community. Mental Health America of Los Angeles 100th Anniversary

This year marks MHALA’s 100th anniversary. For the past century, MHALA has been at the forefront of mental health care, but its impact has never been more evident than in recent years. MHALA has grown into one of California’s premier mental health organizations, serving twice the number of people today as it did prior to the pandemic, securing housing for 2,258 people last year, and assisting 85% of participating members to achieve community employment. In the past year alone, MHALA conducted street outreach to 16,416 people, assisted 575 people in finding employment, and helped reduce Veteran homelessness in Long Beach by 20%.

With locations throughout Los Angeles County, the agency supports over 19,000 low-income and no-income individuals annually with integrated services. MHALA achieves impact in the areas of mental and physical healthcare, homelessness and housing, supported employment, and wellness and financial services, with special programs for Veterans and transition-age youth.

MHALA also provides training programs for individuals joining the behavioral health workforce and for the larger community around mental health issues.
