Message from
the President/CEO

am excited to welcome Rhiannon Acree as our Chair of the board for The Chamber year 2022-2023. Rhiannon is a pillar of the business community here in Long Beach having served as the President of Cambrian Homecare since its inception in March 1996. We are fortunate to have Rhiannon positioned to lead The Chamber this year as we strive to return to ‘business as we know it.’ She is a true asset to the local community, a successful entrepreneur, and a gifted leader who will lead our organization well.

We had the privilege of recognizing Rhiannon at the Chamber’s 131st Annual Gala this past June. The Gala was held at the beautiful Westin in downtown Long Beach, and in addition to welcoming her, we thanked our outgoing Chair, Carolyn Caldwell, CEO of Dignity Health St. Mary Medical Center. The Chamber is honored to have such outstanding local leaders guide our organization year after year.

The Gala also recognized a longtime Long Beach institution, Long Beach City College who are celebrating 95 years of educational excellence. Presented with the “Destination Tomorrow” Award, we had the privilege of celebrating the college’s achievements during the event’s program as well. They are a critical part of the local economy as they assist with the future workforce for our community.

A new year allows for new leadership and along with welcoming Rhiannon Acree as our Chair of the Chamber Board, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming eight new board members. They are: John Hilton of California Resources Corporation; Amber Kusar of Kusar Court Reporters; Lynette Mckinnon of Boeing Company; Silvano Merlo of Courtyard Marriott Long Beach Downtown; Christopher Reese of California State University; Long Beach, Natalie Sauer Rutledge of Northwestern Mutual; Hans Stone of Blueprint Home Loans; and Justin White of Centennial Advisers.

The Chamber has also successfully planned for this year’s goals by ensuring our program offerings refer to our core strategies:

Economic Development: “Creating a Strong Local Economy and The Catalyst for Business Growth”; Public Policy: “Representing the Interest of Business with Government” and The Convener for Leaders & Influencers”; Community Development: “Promoting the Community and The Champion for Stronger Communities”; and Membership Services: “Providing Networking Opportunities and Building Business Relationships” and Political Action: ensuring pro-business candidates are elected to office at all levels of government.

Advocacy is a big part of what The Chamber is known for and our Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee (PAC) has been hard at work ensuring our members’ voices are heard, by continuing our efforts in supporting pro-business candidates. This upcoming election our PAC has endorsed seven seats at the local, state, and federal levels. With continuous updates being sent through our e-newsletter, we strive to keep our members informed with the on-going elections. This November’s election is going to be critical in moving our business community forward and we need everyone’s help to ensure success at the ballot box. For more information please see our voters guide on page 20.

Lastly, this past Chamber year was a successful year for your Chamber as we grew our membership which led us to expanding our team by hiring a new Membership Coordinator to better respond to our member’s needs. We continue to grow our team and in fact if you are interested in learning more, please reach out directly. We have positions open in the administration and special events departments.

Long-time business owner Rhiannon Acree set to take over as board chair

hiannon Acree said the keys to the success of her 26-year-old Cambrian Homecare company belong to the compassion and caring of caregivers, staff and business partners.

“They are persistent and consistent and creative, working together every day to be of service,” Acree said.

Now, she brings that drive and spirit of cooperation to the role of the incoming Chair of the Board for the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Acree has lived in Long Beach for more than 42 years and has been a Chamber member for the past 15 years.

“I enjoy the resources and the support the Chamber offers. The members represent every aspect of business life, and there is no problem they have not encountered,” Acree said.

Of being named Chamber Chair, Acree is grateful for the opportunity to lead.

“As with everything else in life, one has to ‘earn’ such an honor,” Acree said. “Having worked with the members of the Chamber for a number of years, I was impressed by their activism and commitment to the community. What an inspiration they have been!”

Through unimaginable challenges, she saw the business community, from small employers to large corporations, pull together to find solutions and work for good values.

“I wanted to contribute more,” Acree said.

Her contribution will come from experience building her business on a foundation of caring, with a passion for helping solve problems for the elderly and the disabled in their homes.

“Owning and running your own business is a 24/7 commitment. You must love it,” Acree said. Her years as an independent business owner have taught Acree the importance of teamwork and communication, which she said will be part of her focus as Chamber chair.

“The Chamber is a very powerful voice for all businesses. By bringing this team together — members, member employees, community — the Chamber is a force for good and one that needs to be heard,” Acree said. “Each day, businesses are bringing innovation in new services and products and creating jobs. Business is about people, the community. What could be more important?”

As such, Acree said she is drawn to the people involved with, and the mission of, the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce.

“You meet and collaborate with very smart, generous people. The wealth of knowledge and expertise we have in this Chamber is incredible. Together, we can move mountains,” she said.

Toward moving mountains, Acree said one goal as Chamber chair will be adding more members.

Other goals will be growing a workforce development program and launching Chamber Foundation child care initiatives.

“Success also will be marked by the increased communication with city and state leaders as well as members of our own local legislative bodies, building upon our being a continued force for good,” Acree said.

“One of the major challenges facing all of us is the recovery of our businesses and services,” Acree said. “We can depend on this Chamber, Board and its members to be taking action, being the catalyst for business recovery and growth.”

After all, Acree said, Long Beach has much going for it: ocean and mountain views; great schools; a vibrant arts scene; topnotch healthcare; delicious dining; a vital nonprofit sector and more.

“I believe the people are the best draw of Long Beach, with its diversified population holding a wide range of skills,” she said. “There is a small town atmosphere here within a large metropolitan area. A prospective business should look at all Long Beach has to offer and conclude, ‘What a great package! I see opportunity!’”

Long Beach City College serves community with port partnership, aid for unhoused students

ong Beach’s own municipally-run college has been recognized for two very different programs: One which supports high-level training for jobs at the Port of Long Beach, one of the largest ocean cargo ports in the world; and another for students who find themselves living in a very different kind of home.

The LBCC Maritime Center of Excellence was designated in 2021 as a Center of Excellence for Domestic maritime Workforce Training and Education by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD). The award brings several benefits to the college’s training programs, such as cooperative agreements, surplus equipment and even use of some MARAD vessels.

The Maritime Center of Excellence began in 2019. It provides short-term, not-for-college-credit training and industry certifications. In its first two years, nearly 200 people have completed the program. Alexia Flores is one of them.

“[I’m] seeking to learn the business of transportation, opening a freight business. I want to learn the industry to serve in the high demand that our transportation market is dealing with. My business background can serve as an essential trade to help build a successful transportation business and offer other drivers the opportunity to be a part of the cause with me,” Flores said.

While jobs directly tied to servicing ocean-going container ships are most closely associated with the port, there are thousands of jobs related to getting those cargo containers to and from the port itself, by both rail and truck. The Center of Excellence prepares students for those jobs as well.

“I was always interested in the field, but never really knew where to start,” student Arai Garcia said. “I have been driving for a year and now I am ready to advance into the next level of learning and expanding my horizons. I have been looking into expanding my experience as a driver to something more. I have already experienced the road so now I want to experience the background of the industry.”

Meanwhile, LBCC is helping its own students who are dealing with a situation that’s all too common in Southern California — living out of vehicles because of the high cost of housing. So they set up a pilot program to give those students a safe place to stay in their cars overnight.

The Safe Parking Program, which ended its test period at the end of the 2022 spring semester, allowed enrolled students to park their cars in the Pacific Coast Campus Parking Structure from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., seven nights a week. Showers were also made available to students each morning. Extra security for the students was contracted by the college.

College administrators estimated when the program began that as many as 70 students were living out of cars. LBCC staff is still evaluating how many students were aided by the program, but preliminary data shows that 10 students took part during the spring semester, with eight of those completing their coursework. Out of the 12 students participating over both fall and spring semesters, six subsequently obtained standard housing, three graduated, and one continued to use the structure after the spring semester ended.

taking entertainment to new heights

wo area residents are crafting a creative vibe with three of their business ventures based in Long Beach.

Working together for much of the last decade, Jessica Maslin and Josh Dubón entrepreneurship endeavors include DayDreamCinema, MieronVR and DTG App.

All of the entities hub around an innovative way to mix business with original works — be it video, virtual reality or art.

The partnership began when Dubón explored moving beyond his career as an independent skateboarding film videographer. As he worked with leaders in the skateboarding industry, including Tony Hawk and the X Games, Dubón began to receive offers for additional commercial work.

With Maslin as his partner, the pair rebranded Dubón’s initial vision, creating DayDreamCinema, a full-service creative agency with in-house production capabilities.

Now a world-renowned agency based in Long Beach, DayDreamCinema creates commercial campaigns, social media content with strategy, websites, apps and live event activations for a plethora of companies including Jordan, Nike, ESPN and Rolling Stone.

“At our core, we take a fantastical approach that’s outside of the box,” Maslin said. “We are doing things others might not have thought of before. We provide the whole creative package.”

In one instance, the team worked with Snapchat to develop shows for the channel, which dropped each week at selected times. At the debut, one show received more than two hundred million views each week, providing additional value to the channel.

DayDreamCinema’s staff includes Maslin, Dubón and five full-time employees, who work with a network of more than 200 creatives to take ideas from brainstorming sessions to finished products. Clients include international businesses and local start-ups, as well as fellow Long Beach Chamber members.

“We love to be a resource for members, to help them grow their online presence,” Maslin said. “[The chamber] provides a valuable resource to help connect us with policy makers, investors, stakeholders and local talent. Any question you have, the chamber can help you as a business owner.”

Working with creatives as part of a DayDreamCinema project with California artist Greg "Craola" Simkins led the pair to launch MieronVR. A virtual reality healthcare solution, MieronVR provides a VR library focusing on physical and occupational therapy, mental health needs and pain management.

Knowing what the pair were doing in the field of virtual reality films, Simkins reached out when his then-5-year-old niece, Eden, became paralyzed from the waist down.

During treatment at the Frazier Rehab Institute in Louisville, Ky., Dubón provided Eden with a virtual reality experience. Doctors discovered she responded extremely well to the experience both physically and mentally.

This led to the development of a library of VR videos, which did everything from giving Eden assistance while walking to help strengthen her core and trunk muscles — all through a series of games.

“It became bigger than her and us,” Dubón said. “It gave us the opportunity to do something incredible to help people around the world.”

With Mieron VR, Maslin serves as the co-founder and COO, while Dubón is co-founder and CEO. Mike Jones, former MySpace CEO and now CEO of startup studio Science Inc. is also a partner in the endeavor. A team of 12 people including software and virtual reality developers work with a medical advisory board to create the experiences.

Named after the neurons responsible for movement, MieronVR focuses on using technology to overstimulate neuro-pathways which then help a person recover from a variety of issues. The technology is also used as a pain management tool, providing a healthier approach than opioid treatment.

Current clients include public and private health care organizations, as well as the government via the veterans administration. Dubón and Maslin hope it may grow to include a consumer option for patients to utilize at home.

The latest venture, DTG App, a direct to garment printing option, grew as a way to serve the Long Beach business community and DayDreamCinema clients looking for a way to put their brand on items.

With no minimum order and no color limitations, Dubón and Maslin have created a location where creatives can take ideas to finished products. The main location in downtown Long Beach has five employees. Franchises are now appearing in Chicago, Dallas, Lake Tahoe and Reno.

Laserfiche announces new CEO to replace longtime executive Chris Wacker

he longtime CEO of a prominent Long Beach business has officially made the decision to pass the torch.

Chris Wacker—who has served as the CEO of Laserfiche since his wife, Laserfiche founder Nien-Ling Wacker, died in 2014—announced his retirement as CEO effective Aug. 1. Current president and CTO Karl Chan will assume the role of CEO in Wacker’s stead.

Wacker has been a longstanding presence at Laserfiche, which is a software as a service (SaaS) provider of content and business process management products, for 35 years, but he is now stepping back into a more passive role. He will still serve as the president of the Laserfiche board of directors while Chan will oversee the day-to-day operations of the business.

“Karl is an extraordinary business leader and visionary technologist who has been instrumental in Laserfiche’s success for the past 30 years,” Wacker said in a news release announcing the move. “The company is entering a new era of accelerated innovation and digital transformation, and Karl is well positioned to lead Laserfiche to continued global growth.”

Chan’s long-term tenure with Laserfiche has placed him at the center of many of its most important projects. In particular, he was instrumental in the success of the company’s cloud-based services, called Laserfiche Cloud. He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Business Journal in 2015 for his work.

In a news release, Chan said he was honored to be selected to lead Laserfiche.

“The rapid pace of change we are seeing today means that there is [an] abundant need for process automation and digital transformation,” he said. “I’m excited to drive the delivery of innovative solutions that will empower our customers and enrich the world.”

Laserfiche also announced that Peter Wayman will be stepping into the role of president, and Michael Allen will be appointed chief technology officer.

Middle Harbor and Mason Mega Rail projects receive ACEC Grand Awards

he Port of Long Beach Middle Harbor redevelopment project and the Georgia Ports Authority Mason Mega Rail project both received a Grand Award at the American Council of Civil Engineers Engineering Excellence Awards last month in Washington, D.C.

The Middle Harbor redevelopment project combined two aging shipping terminals into one of the world’s most advanced and greenest container terminals. The modernized terminal has more than doubled the capacity of the previous two terminals it replaced. Middle Harbor redefines the current thinking of engineering design for the modern port. Moffatt & Nichol provided overall program management services for the planning and design of this innovative project.

The Mason Mega Rail project increases the Port’s competitiveness nationally and internationally, while improving quality of life and enhancing safety for the surrounding Garden City community. It is one of the most important infrastructure investments in the State of Georgia over the last decade. Moffatt & Nichol served as the program manager and design engineer.

Congratulations to the project teams involved on improving logistics at two of the largest U.S. ports.
