Welcome to the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2023-2024 Business Referral Guide and Membership Directory — a special edition of the Chamber’s quarterly magazine, Your Advocate. The Chamber is proud to serve approximately 800 members both in and around Long Beach. We strive to be the Catalyst for business growth, a Convener for leaders and influencers, and the Champion for a stronger community.

It has been an exciting couple of months serving as the Chair of the Board. My theme for the year is FUN. Fun encapsulates my approach to business. F: force for good; U: united together, the Chamber works on your behalf; N: the Chamber is the voice of business now.

Long Beach City College

Long Beach City College (LBCC) is a community college with two Long Beach campuses that provides high-quality programs and support services that address today’s student challenges while meeting the requirements of today’s employers.

Long Beach Unified School District

A National and International Reputation for Excellence

The Long Beach Unified School District educates more than 65,000 students from preschool to high school in 84 public schools located in Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill and Avalon on Catalina Island. Schools here are widely known for their innovation, academic rigor, educator professional development, the arts and greatness in athletics.

Established in 1885, LBUSD is now Long Beach’s largest employer, with a team of more than 12,000 full-time and part-time employees committed to excellence and equity for all students.

The school district has earned a reputation as one of America’s finest school systems, winning many awards as a national and international model of excellence. The Global Education Study lists LBUSD among five of the world’s highest performing school systems. LBUSD also is one of the world’s top 20 school systems – and one of the top three in the U.S. – in terms of sustained and significant improvements, according to a report by McKinsey & Company, a trusted advisor and counselor to many of the most influential businesses and institutions in the world.

The school district is a five-time finalist and top national winner of the Broad Prize for Urban Education, recognizing America’s best urban school system. The district also was listed among California “Districts Beating the Odds” by the Learning Policy Institute. Long Beach was identified as a “positive outlier” district where Hispanic, white and African American students achieve at higher than predicted levels, performing better than students of similar racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in other districts.

LBUSD also earned the District of the Year award from the national business news publisher Industry Dive and its publication, Education Dive. The honor is part of the Dive Awards recognizing education’s “top disruptors and innovators.”

Key to the district’s success is its work with business people, volunteers, colleges and universities. LBUSD, California State University Long Beach and Long Beach City College have worked in collaboration with local, regional and national partners to create seamless, pre-kindergarten to postgraduate-school education. This partnership aligns academic standards, teaching methods and student assessment from preschool through masters and doctoral degree. The partnership also includes the Long Beach College Promise, which provides additional support to help more students prepare for and succeed in college. LBUSD has also established educational partnerships with more than 1,300 local businesses, which recognize the district’s role in developing a well-educated, highly skilled workforce.

PCU Law

The First and Only Law School in Long Beach

As a private law school, Pacific Coast University School of Law (PCU Law) prides itself on quality education provided by its expert faculty. With small class sizes, each with no more than 40 students, PCU offers a more intimate setting and allows students to participate in valuable one-on-one interactions with professors.

Located in Long Beach, PCU Law has educated hundreds of students throughout Orange County and Los Angeles since 1927, before the California State Bar even existed.

Alumni include practicing attorneys and leaders in the legal community, many of whom continue to do important public service work in the local area.

Students at PCU Law will study to obtain a Juris Doctor degree while preparing for the California General Bar Examination. The institution’s comprehensive curriculum guides enrolled students to pursue specialty areas in the legal community or practices in general law.

Neighborhoods

Belmont Shore

Belmont Shore is a community within the City of Long Beach that includes most of the city's public beaches and shoreline along Ocean Avenue. One of the city’s most popular beach destinations is also popularly recognized for those seeking Los Angeles County beach vacations.

The beach and 2nd Street shopping are highlights of this busy, eclectic town where many houses were built in the early- to mid-1900s.

Buzzing with shoppers, residents, visitors, beach-goers and the nautical crowd that makes use of the Alamitos Bay, visitors can rent a bicycle to ride the paved beach path, surrey, skate, jog, walk and bring their dogs to Dog Beach. Visitors can also put together a game of sand beach volleyball at one of the courts at the beaches along Ocean Avenue. It's there that they'll also find the jetski launch ramp, Belmont Pool and Chuck's Coffee Shop, home to the "Locally World Famous" Weasel.

In addition to the city shutting down a couple streets for the summer safety, they also close the streets for events such as the annual holiday parade in December, Dine & Stroll food events outdoors and a big car show annually.

Restaurants offer plenty of options. Ethnic foods, Italian, college influence in youthful energy at night, and Long Beach's gay population all add to this quirky, very unorthodox community that includes many athletes, beach lovers, dog lovers, shop owners and home owners or renters with some nice little cottages or larger waterfront digs near the beach.

Among Long Beach's unique attractions and hidden gems are some noisy bright green parrots that have lived in towering palms along Ocean Blvd. near the sign for the Belmont Pool. These birds have a unique history. Roll down your car window if you happen to be sitting at the stop light and listen for the sound. If you hear noisy chatter from above, it’s the conures, just being themselves.

Give yourself several hours to explore Belmont Shore. Beyond the bend of the 2nd Street/Livingston/Ocean stoplight, Belmont Shore fades and downtown Long Beach begins to come into view. It is another portion of Long Beach well worth exploring and contains most of the city's major attractions.

Bixby Knolls

Neighborhood pride is strong in Bixby Knolls — a vibrant, walkable and community-driven Long Beach neighborhood. The majority of homes in the area were built between 1920 and 1950, providing a variety of different architectural styles. The district is primarily residential, with 860 businesses lining the strip of Atlantic Avenue south of San Antonio and north of the 405 Freeway, including Steelcraft, Bake N Broil, Wood & Salt, Pixie Toys, MeeMa’s, Popcorn World, Willmore Wine Bar, Lucy’s Boudoir Lingerie & Bra Boutique and Rooted LB. Rich in history: The neighborhood features Rancho Los Cerritos adobe, with the home and grounds maintained to look as they did during the 1870s along with old buildings like the original Bixby mansion, Long Beach Shakespeare Company and Historical Society of Long Beach.

Brewery Knolls: Craft brews are no stranger in Bixby; the area is home to four breweries.

Travel options: Bixby Knolls’ proximity to two freeways and the Long Beach Airport makes commuting and traveling more convenient.

Standout schools in the Bixby Knolls boundaries include Longfellow Elementary, Los Cerritos Elementary, and Hughes Middle School.

Known to be an exceptionally family-friendly neighborhood, Bixby Knolls has embraced neighborhood events from “First Fridays” to Kidical Mass Bike Rides, a book club, music fan discussion group, and a walking group. Their most well-known community gathering is “First Fridays,” a monthly special event along Atlantic Avenue. The Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association hosts all monthly programming.

Downtown Long Beach

Downtown Long Beach (DTLB) is a highly desirable, diverse urban core by the beach. It is considered the heart of Long Beach and a significant contributor to the success of the greater Los Angeles region.

Easily accessible, DTLB is the only urban core located on a waterfront between San Diego and San Francisco. The growing district offers several friendly neighborhoods and a diverse culture. The area is supported by an accessible workforce that commands middle-to-high incomes. In addition, there is a clear partnership pipeline between local colleges and universities. DTLB is also home to many unique destinations and offers a wide range of places to live, shop, dine and play.

With more affordable lease rates than other areas for office and retail space, and a variety of housing options, it’s the perfect place to set up shop and call home. Zaferia District

Zaferia is a vibrant area with a unique personality and a degree of edginess that sets it apart from other business districts in Long Beach. Zaferia has a history of attracting entrepreneurial risk-takers, going back to its original business inhabitants of the early and mid-1900’s. Zaferia is home to the City’s oldest bar, Joe Jost’s, and prior to joining the City on Labor Day, 1920, was known to some as the Bar District since it was “wet” when the City was “dry.”

Why “Zaferia”? It is truly a mystery. Whatever the origins, the earliest reference to Zaferia on any maps or in printed form was in 1904 when Henry Huntington and his Pacific Electric Rail Road laid track on a diagonal from Willowville to Seal Beach and beyond. The little village of Bixby Ranch laborers known as Zaferia held enough of a population and, most importantly, potential for commerce that it was worthy of its own depot at the intersection of East Anaheim Street and Redondo Avenue and called it Zaferia Station.

Zaferia is located in the heart of the City and the East Anaheim Street corridor serves as the main artery. Zaferia offers lively bars with entertainment, restaurants, and theater, as well as professional service providers, a design district, auto services, and distinctive retail unlike any other area in Long Beach.

Real Estate

Generally considered the most housing-affordable beach community in California, Long Beach boasts many beachfront expanses along its nearly eight miles of beach. The city, one of the largest in the state with a population of approximately 500,000, is a patchwork of neighborhoods, incorporating a total of 54 separate, distinct communities.

“It’s 25 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. There are 18 million people living within a 60-mile radius of LA. The Port of Long Beach, combined with the Port of Los Angeles, is the second busiest in the world,” said Phil Jones, managing broker of Caldwell Banker Reality. “That drives the economy.”

“Following the hot real estate markets of 2020 and 2021, 2022 was anything but,” said Jones, director emeritus of the Pacific West Association of Realtors and director of the California and National Associations of Realtors. “The Federal Reserve’s monetary tightening policies had a significant impact on the housing market. Steep increases in mortgage rates added to the costs of homeownership. Typically, we would expect the inventory of homes for sale to increase in markets like these but that simply has not been the case this time. The lack of a growing supply of available listings has kept sales prices elevated, adding to the affordability crisis.”

“It’s not unique to Long Beach or Southern California. It’s a nationwide issue — the shortage of inventory for sale,” according to Jones. “However, we have began seeing moderation of appreciation in home values. In fact, we experienced nearly a 4% drop in the median price of single-family home prices in November.”

Long Beach, historically, has had as many as 3,000 available units for sale. At the end of November there were less than 400.

Long Beach, along with Sacramento, has been a leader in efforts to create additional units of housing in California, and there is still a long way to go.

“It’s nice to see the evolution of our city’s skyline as we watch beautiful condo and apartment buildings going up,” Jones said. “It’s a start but we need to continue to encourage policies that will bring more affordable housing to our city.”

For homeowners and renters alike, Long Beach offers residents a long list of amenities. In addition to the miles of beaches, there are five public golf courses, the Billie Jean King Tennis Center and 26 community centers. The Long Beach Park, Recreation and Marine Department maintains 170 parks with bike trails, nature areas and more. There are also campgrounds, picnic areas, four public swimming pools, multiple boat ramps into the Pacific Ocean, historic sites, museums, performing arts centers, theaters and Rosie’s Dog Beach where owners can let their canine best friends romp off-leash.

And whatever type of recreation and home residents choose, it’s a near certainty that there will be golden weather. Long Beach is rated as one of the state’s three most temperate climates. Long Beach averages 287 sunny days each year, no snow and only 14 inches of rain annually.

Dignity Health — St. Mary Medical Center opened its doors in August 1923. Its rich history reflects the strength and inspiration of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, who established the first Catholic hospital South of Los Angeles. A century later, our hospital has grown into a world class medical center that has become a cornerstone in the Long Beach community for health and wellness.

“As our beloved hospital prepares to celebrate 100 years of service, I find myself reflecting on the strength and courage of our founding Sisters,” said Carolyn Caldwell, President and Chief Executive Officer. “Their mission of health and healing has carried this hospital well into today’s reality, empowering it to remain a relevant and vital part of Greater Long Beach.”

St. Mary has received numerous accolades for outstanding care this year, including Healthgrades recognition as a recipient of the 2023 Critical Care Excellence Award,™ which ranks us among the top 10% of hospitals in the nation for critical care services. We also remain a Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center and received the American Heart Association’s Gold Plus Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Quality Achievement Award for our commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment.

Caldwell states that staying focused on the hospital’s mission of providing high quality care to the most vulnerable patients living in our community means looking ahead to expanding services to meet the needs of that community. Recently, St. Mary opened an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) with 6,542-square-feet of usable space which currently focuses on GI procedures with plans to increase to additional outpatient surgeries.

“With the relocation of outpatient GI services to our new Center, St. Mary will be able to expand its Emergency Department and offer additional treatment bays so that we can care for more patients,” Caldwell said.

“We’re also excited to announce that our $2.3 million CARE Center expansion project is well underway,” Caldwell said. “The CARE Center is one of the nation’s most comprehensive Centers, supporting people living with HIV and others directly impacted by the virus. It serves more than 1,600 people every year and has touched countless more lives in its three decades of service. Some of our team members have already moved into the new space and construction of our new medical clinic has begun. When the project is finished, our CARE Center offerings will include medical care, behavioral health and additional support services, all located in one convenient location on our hospital campus.”

“There is so much to be grateful for at our hospital and we look forward to celebrating our centennial in the coming months,” Caldwell said. “Our hope is that St. Mary’s healing ministry will continue to thrive for another 100 years as it meets the growing health care needs of our community.”

MemorialCare Medical Group giving patients more options

MemorialCare has significantly improved how healthcare is delivered with its evolution from a hospital to a fully integrated health system.

Recognizing the importance of ease and patient access – and understanding that not all care requires a hospital setting – MemorialCare expanded its network to include more than over 200 community-based sites for primary care and urgent care, surgery, imaging, dialysis, physical therapy and women’s health. enjoys global success, while retaining local roots

With roots established in Long Beach in 1945, Moffatt & Nichol has grown and evolved to become a truly global infrastructure advisory firm, reflecting progress the City of Long Beach itself has made as a recognized center for world trade and technology.

From a single office in Long Beach, the company now has more than 45 offices in eight countries serving clients throughout the world. Locally, the company continues its tradition as a leading infrastructure consulting, planning, and design firm.

Port and maritime work is in the company’s DNA.

Before settling in Long Beach and establishing their eponymous partnership, founders John Moffatt and Frank Nichol, both professional engineers, worked on contracts to design U.S. Navy facilities in Long Beach, Port Hueneme, and Seal Beach during World War II.

The firm’s waterfront and transportation work has been woven into the Long Beach landscape, from Alamitos Bay Marina and the original Gerald Desmond and Shoemaker bridges to the Long Beach Middle Harbor redevelopment.

“The Middle Harbor redevelopment was a real landmark project. It more than doubled the capacity of the two terminals it replaced, and with its electric-powered cargo-handling equipment, it is one of the world’s cleanest container terminals. That means cleaner air for Long Beach and more efficient cargo movement, which benefits businesses and consumers,” Nichol said.

Moffatt & Nichol provided overall program management services for the planning and design for the 300-plus-acre fully automated container terminal, which is capable of handling more than 3 million 20-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, annually. The project was recently recognized by the American Council of Engineering Companies for engineering excellence.

In 2022, Moffatt & Nichol also enjoyed high ranking in the very competitive transportation sector, coming in at 19 out of the top 50 largest firms in this sector nationwide.

“It’s very satisfying to know that our work contributes to our regional transportation infrastructure in a significant way,” Nichol said. “For example, in Southern California we are famous for our freeway traffic, and our I-405 corridor is generally recognized as the busiest road in the U.S. As the lead design firm for the Pacific Infrastructure I-405 Designers joint venture, we recently provided full engineering services for the I-405 Improvement Project, which will be a significant benefit to Southland commuters.”

The $1.9 billion highway infrastructure project widens and improves 16 miles of I-405 between SR-73 in Costa Mesa and I-605 near the Los Angeles County line, adding general purpose and tolled express lanes, reconfiguring 12 interchanges, and providing safety enhancements. Moffatt & Nichol is the designer-of-record for the freeway expansion and operational improvements.

As a member of the Long Beach business community, Moffatt & Nichol has remained rooted in the city.

In April 2019, Moffatt & Nichol moved its corporate headquarters and Long Beach branch office to The Terminal at Douglas Park.

Advancing people, places, and economy

As we reflect on the past and present challenges from the pandemic, inflation, rising interest rates, labor force dynamics and the risk of a recession, several questions come to mind. What’s next for our downtown, neighborhood marketplaces, business and industry in Long Beach? How do we adapt and get ahead of trends shaping, not only our city, but those across the country?

From an economic development viewpoint, we must stay proactive by leveraging economic partnerships, focus on business retention, expansion and attraction, talent recruitment and retention, driving smart growth and investment throughout our city. We must tell our story to the world via a robust marketing and branding effort. We should continue to diversify our economy and industry clusters so we can withstand shock and stresses in the marketplace and build a strong economy for all.

Recently, the City Council approved Blueprint for Economic Development 2.0 to advance the vision of “creating a more inclusive and sustainable economy by 2030 for workers, investors and entrepreneurs.” The plan lays out eight broad focus areas that will drive economic growth over the next ten years, including many of the tenets mentioned above as we begin to reposition our city for success.

We must continue to invest, build upon our community’s inherent strengths and competitive advantages that include a growing and emerging downtown, the Port of Long Beach, an international gateway to Asia and the world, the Queen Mary, Long Convention and Entertainment Center, Space Beach, the creative economy (tourism, hospitality, arts, and culture) and our diverse business districts and neighborhood marketplaces.

We have a once-in-a -lifetime opportunity to build our community — our city — back better, stronger and more inclusive. This starts with a great vision and plan, connecting people and places, integrating mobility options, reshaping retail with more emphasis on unique and authentic experiences, adapting to the shift of remote and hybrid work by changing the form and function of our office footprint (e.g., more amenities, social interaction, and outdoor workspaces). We can advance the education continuum by continuing to connect our local public schools to colleges and technical schools and industry, develop more affordable and attainable housing, and ensure economic mobility and opportunity for all.

In this ever-changing, new economy, Long Beach will lead the way. I look forward to continuing to build on the successes we’ve achieved together while we attend to the challenges that remain head on as we foster a more vibrant, resilient and diverse economy. It’s our time!

Port of Long Beach’s Transformative Year As It Pursues Zero Emissions

The Port of Long Beach has earned a worldwide reputation as a leader in sustainable operations since it adopted the Green Port Policy nearly two decades ago – cutting emissions and reducing community health risks while serving as a jobs creator and regional economic engine.

In 2022, its ongoing transition to cleaner operations accelerated. Whether it was building new green infrastructure or introducing clean technologies and fuels, the year showed that the Port is well on its way to fulfilling the Clean Air Action Plan’s twin goals of zero emissions cargo-handling equipment by 2030 and a zero-emission drayage truck fleet by 2035.

A big step was taken in April when, in partnership with the Port of Los Angeles, the new Clean Truck Fund Rate was kicked off, providing resources that will be needed to make sure the 20,000-plus trucks working the two ports will one day be zero-emissions.

Cargo owners will pay up to $20 per loaded container hauled by drayage trucks in and out of the container terminals. The rate is expected to generate $90 million in the first year, or $45 million per port.

“Decarbonizing trucking and minimizing climate impacts is a huge part of our efforts to lead the intermodal shipping industry to a green future,” said Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero. “The Clean Truck Fund Rate, a vital part of our highly successful Clean Truck Program, allows us to balance the aggressive pursuit of zero-emissions operations with economic vitality and competitiveness.”

Less than a month later, the Port celebrated completing the Double Track Access Railroad Project from Pier G to Pier J, one of several projects designed to shift more cargo to rail, improving the speed at which cargo moves through the Harbor District while reducing the number of trucks on local roads, lessening traffic and pollution.

In a signal that zero-emissions trucking may come sooner than anyone thinks, in September, the Port also announced that trucking partner 4 Gen Logistics will convert to fully-zero emissions by 2025 – 10 years before the 2035 goal. 4 Gen has committed to installing 60 public charging stations by the end of 2023 to serve its own fleet of electric trucks, as well as other companies’ trucks. 4 Gen will also purchase 41 Volvo and 20 Kenworth electric heavy-duty trucks, with plans eventually calling for a 100-vehicle zero emissions fleet.

Other important sustainability milestones the Port reached during the year included:

•  In August, Pasha Hawaii brought the George III – the shipping line’s new liquefied natural gas-powered ship – to Long Beach, where it was the first LNG ship to ever be refueled on the West Coast.

•  The push for clean trucks got another major investment in October when the Port of Long Beach joined the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems or ARCHES, a public-private partnership to capture over $1.25 billion in newly available federal funding to assist in developing a robust market for renewable hydrogen as a fuel for transportation.

•  Also in October, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the Port a $30.1 million grant to deploy the nation’s largest fleet of manually operated, zero-emissions cargo handling equipment at Long Beach Container Terminal, the largest complement of such vehicles at a single marine terminal.

“This was truly a year of transformation and an important one for our ambition of being the world’s first zero-emissions seaport,” Cordero said. “It was also a reminder of our steadfast commitment to protecting the public’s health and showing that good jobs and a vibrant economy can exist together.”

Encompassing 1,166 acres and home to three runways, the Airport’s robust aviation activity consists of commercial aviation business as well as military operations and services for one of the busiest general aviation communities in the nation. Ranking eighth nationwide in 2022, LGB continues to be a favorite among travelers who recognize its convenient Southern California location, exemplary amenities and first-class customer experience.

Long Beach Airport has garnered extensive praise for the careful restoration and preservation of its history as well as awards for modern updates to the design and architecture of its facilities. Customer experience is top-notch, with LGB being known as the most easy-going way to travel into and out of Southern California, with quality dining and shopping opportunities. Whether travelers are sitting at a fire pit in the lushly landscaped open-air concourse or enjoying local concessions, LGB provides a uniquely Long Beach atmosphere and effortless access to destinations served by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest Airlines.
