CRYSTAL ROGERS: Owner, Lucy’s Boudoir
By Jeff Wisser
Crystal Rogers is running a successful Long Beach business at Lucy’s Boudoir, a lingerie boutique
specializing in all things undergarments, swimwear, shapewear, nursing, mastectomy, everyday, pre- and
post-surgery, teen, lingerie, outwear, panties and more.
For Rogers, this is more than a business, more than an occupation. For this businesswoman, the CEO,
lead fitting expert and, in her words, “do-it-all lady” at Lucy’s Boudoir, this is a
mission.
“First of all, we like to take the angst out of the whole process of shopping,” Rogers
explained. “And two, we want women to delight in what they have.”
Every customer is unique.
“We’re going to work with you where you are right now, with the hopes of a couple of
things. One, that you will start to see yourself through a different paradigm,” Rogers said.
“Two, I do understand that because women wear these bras more than 14 hours a day on average, it
is such a crucial part of their orthopedic health and well-being.
“They’re usually at a job at this time. If they’re a caretaker for maybe an elder, or
even, say, a child with a disability, they bend over a lot. Or they could be new mothers, or they could
be doctors. We have the whole gamut of clientele that ranges from stay-at-home parents to professional
athletes, ballerinas, soccer players, women that work at the port, women that are engineers, women that
have retired from the Air Force who used to build planes, fighter jets. And the story is the exact same:
My back hurts. My neck hurts.”
Rogers purchased Lucy’s Boudoir in 2014, keeping the business’ original moniker.
“First of all, if it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it,” she said. “And
secondly, this isn’t Crystal’s Boudoir, it’s yours. That name represents all of my
clients who come in the door, it’s a representation of all the varying ‘beautitudes’
and attributes of women, even the complexities of women.”
Rogers is intent, she said, on celebrating the awesomeness and “bra-someness” of women with
a one-of-a-kind approach.
“You have this cozy boutique here in Long Beach that’s one of one, the only one of its
kind,” Rogers said. “It’s not like a coffee shop where you can find one on every
corner. We’re not a 7-Eleven, a gas station. We are essentially the one and only store of its kind
in the state of California, in the city of Long Beach.”
And, she added, they know their stuff.
“We can answer a question within five minutes of a woman walking in and saying, ‘Well, wow,
I’ve been running around here, yelling at everybody in my house, talking about my back hurts, I
don’t want to go to work, all this, and all I needed was this.’ … Well, here’s
the thing: The women that come to Lucy’s Boudoir will be wearing a bra that fits.”
And why not, she stressed.
“Your husband, I guarantee in his closet, every single one of his shoes fit him perfectly,”
Rogers explained. “He will not subject himself to poor shoes that don’t fit. So why are you
not finding what works for you so that you in turn can be better for A, yourself and B, for the people
around you?”
Did we mention that for Rogers, this is a mission?
“It grieves me to see a woman’s inhibitions because it’s great to be a woman,
especially when you can be and feel your best, regardless of the changes that you go through in life;
those are things that we can’t avoid. The goal is to bring them back full circle, despite their
overcomings, and let them know they matter, and we care.”
And, Rogers added, Lucy’s Boudoir is easy to visit and easy to work with.
“Our costs are very much equivalent and often lower than the costs of other stores, which is
crazy, because pound for pound, we exceed what a woman is looking for. We have a business where a woman
can pull up to the curb or in the parking space and walk straight into a full-service boutique
specifically for a product that is so important. With stock on hand, in their size,
guaranteed.”
Expertise, a singular approach, a dedication to restoring clients’ comfort, and even a devotion
to encouraging customers to embrace life. It’s a tall order, but that is Rogers’
mission.
“We like to restore life and dreams back to women because women are the heart of their
homes,” Rogers said. “And the one thing that I’m very passionate about is the
importance of seeing glimpses of joy and comfort restored in every woman we support.”
Rogers was recently recognized by the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce with the organization’s Don
Temple Storage Philanthropic Pioneer Award.
“Being recognized for giving back shines a light on those in need,” she said of the honor.
“This award is an opportunity to ignite a spark among members of our community, to demonstrate
that the support of others is an incredible practice and more than a worthwhile pursuit –
it’s a passion.”
