175th Anniversary: Village of Lancaster Celebrates 175 Years with Ongoing Celebrations

2024 was a year of celebration in the Village of Lancaster! To honor its 175th anniversary since incorporation in 1849, the Village hosted events every month.

After kicking off the year with a New Year’s semi-formal at the Lancaster Opera House and a trivia night at Saint Mary’s High School, the Village held its first ever Restaurant Week in March. It was followed by the Eclipse Experience led by the Chamber of Commerce in April and an event to raise banners for past Lancaster Fire Chiefs in May.

In June, Anniversary Summer began. The season saw incredible events like the return of the Car Show, Old Home Week, the first annual Lancaster Porchfest, and ended with the annual Fall Festival. Working with the Chamber, the Village Merchants Association, Lancaster Fire Department, Lancaster Youth Bureau, Lancaster Library, and more made “Anniversary Summer” the Village of Lancaster’s most amazing summer yet! We closed out the year with a pumpkin carving contest, a lunch to honor and celebrate our veterans, and the first Village of Lancaster Holiday Home Decorating Contest.

All of this was accompanied by an incredible monthly Speaker Series that highlighted the history of the Village of Lancaster and the surrounding areas.

There was something for everyone in the 175th Anniversary Celebration year! It truly takes a village to celebrate a village, and collaboration with individual local businesses and organizations like the Chamber of Commerce and the Lancaster Village Merchants Association made it all possible. Though the Anniversary Year has ended, there will no doubt be many more opportunities to celebrate the Village of Lancaster together in the months and years to come.

Hollywood’s Christmas Magic

On April 11, 2025, the Village of Lancaster Business District had the honor of being a feature location for the filming of a Great American Family movie called “Christmas Spark” starring Mario Lopez and Ali Cobrin.

Thanks to a talented prop crew, Lancaster Village was changed into a magical winter wonderland, with store windows echoing the holiday theme. The village was abuzz with the excitement of gaining celebrity status and the potential of drawing more attention and tourists to its everyday charm. The film was brought to the Lancaster area thanks to the Twin District Fire Company located on William Street. Out of several other fire companies in Western New York, Twin District was chosen as the main filming location as the result of shared YouTube videos. We look forward to seeing this movie with many familiar faces and locations sometime in December!

Village Beautification: Program Gives a Boost to Lancaster's Business District

Beautification efforts in the Village of Lancaster began in 2018 with coordinated efforts from the Village of Lancaster and a group of high school students interested in cleaning up the Village and planting flowers.

The initiative, which was overseen and encouraged by Village of Lancaster Mayor Lynne Ruda, coincided with the presentation of “Landscaping Lancaster”: a plan introduced by Village resident Rich Groblewski to promote a business district beautification program that used a variety of plant material and volunteers. Soon, town residents Julie Curtis and Peg Riexinger joined the efforts, and these four became core participants in what became known as“Lancaster Beautification”. Today, through this endeavor, participants within the community strive to bring beauty to the hardscaped central business district for the merchants, customers and residents that walk and use that space daily.

Lancaster Beautification Today

Lancaster Beautification is now part of the Lancaster Village Merchant Association (LVMA) – a 501c3 not-for-profit organization which combines efforts to promote the Village merchants as well as support growth in the Village’s central business district. Since 2018, Lancaster Beautification’s core group has expanded, and anyone can volunteer, including nonresidents, and students (or adults) can receive volunteer hours for school and clubs.

Lancaster Beautification Funding

Beautification is funded through community and business sponsorships and a Gala in the Garden fundraiser that has historically been held in the gardens of residents Julie and Dan Curtis. The Village was also able to secure a grant for most of the hanging baskets and planters that added to the expansion of the central business district streetscape. In 2023, Legislator Frank Todaro obtained $15,000 in grant funding for this expansion to happen.

How can the community and businesses donate and sponsor towards this beautiful feat of color?

Sponsoring a planter or hanging basket can be done at any time, and one can opt for a sponsorship via the Spring into Action sponsorship form made available on the Lancaster Village website (https://lancastervillageny.gov), or via social media. There are three levels of sponsorship. Businesses, organizations and families can also “adopt a garden bed” like the “adopt a highway” cleanup program. Volunteers can attend the organized group clean ups and weeding events, or contribute individually when they have the time to help.

Welcome to the Village of Lancaster

Seeing our Central Business District blossom and grow is truly exciting! I’ve watched for almost 50 years as we have transformed an abandoned department store and parking lot to a vibrant and robust center of activities. This was accomplished through the tireless efforts of prior Village Board’s, investors and several governmental agencies to give the community what they have searched for over the years. It is truly rewarding to see our community support the Central Business District and enjoy all that it offers.

About the Village of Lancaster

From the iconic Lancaster Opera House to recreational opportunities, and activities for senior citizens, the Village of Lancaster offers attractions for residents of all ages.

The village of about 10,000 population is undergoing a transformation of its core district, with the development of a walkable community featuring buildings with shops, services, restaurants and other businesses on the ground level and apartments on two floors above.

At the center of the village is the Opera House, which has been restored to the beauty of its origin in 1897. It is the setting for performances throughout the year.

Another historic structure is the Federal-style Hull House, which is widely regarded as the oldest stone structure in Erie County. Restoration of the home, built in about 1810, is ongoing and there are events and fundraisers throughout the year.

The Town of Lancaster Senior Center features monthly meetings and activities ranging from card games to movies, pot luck dinners, birthday celebrations, pickleball and other games, exercise, dancing and swimming for those 55 and over.

The 175-acre Westwood Park offers a wide array of opportunities, with an enclosed pavilion, ball courts, a playground, cross-country skiing and walking and bicycle paths. It includes Westwood Park Memorial Garden with a setting of quiet reflection amid a garden of pine trees, shrubbery and flowers overlooking a three-acre pond.

Walden Pond Park, Keysa Town Park and Meadow Lea Park also include ball fields, shelters, playgrounds, an ice hockey rink and swimming pools.

Welcome to Lancaster, New York!

As the Supervisor of the Town of Lancaster, I want to welcome you to one of the best communities in all of New York State. Whether you are just visiting for the day or plan to make this your permanent home, we have lots to do and see. From the great stores located in the Village of Lancaster, where you can find unique items and great dining, to the multitude of parks and recreation options we offer, there is always somewhere fun and interesting to go. If live theater is your thing, then the Historic Lancaster Opera House, with its extensive show season, is the right place for you, with quality entertainment at an affordable price without the downtown parking cost.

If you are planning on making this your personal home or your business headquarters, you should know that we have extremely safe and well-maintained neighborhoods. The Lancaster School System can offer your children a great education, top-notch competitive sports programs and outstanding extracurricular activities. Pair the schools up with the services offered at the Lancaster Youth Bureau and your kids will have plenty to do year-round. If Mom and Dad are coming with you, we also have one of the busiest Senior Centers in all of Western New York that offers everything from dancing to crafts. We also offer Senior Center Vans to make sure our older folks can get around.

So, whether it’s for a couple days or decades, we look forward to seeing you here in a town that has it all and somewhere you can call home.

From the Mayor: Village of Depew

Since being an elected official since 2015, and now serving the Village of Depew as Mayor in the middle of my second term plus being a resident for more than 36 years, I believe that I am more than qualified to have an opinion as to the quality of life that we offer our residents and business owners.

Our Village offers many of the same services that the two towns that the Village is a part of, but our residents can be proud of the quality of those services. Our Depew Volunteer Fire Department continues to lay claim to the largest number of members in all of Erie County. Our Depew Police Department provides excellent protection and exceptional response times. Our team at the Department of Public Works does an incredible job maintaining our streets and roads, as well as maintaining our Village buildings. Our Parks and Recreation Department boasts numerous neighborhood playground parks, Veteran’s and Fireman’s Park where we have an ice rink, two pools, basketball, softball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, tennis, roller hockey, tennis and four new pickleball courts and a covered fitness court. The newest addition to Fireman’s Park has been our 5,000 square foot Pavilion where you can rent one of two 1,200 square foot rooms that include a fireplace, an 85” smart television, refrigerator, sink prep area and a microwave. The facility has geo-thermal heating and air conditioning with glass garage doors that can be opened for additional space.

In the warmer weather, Veteran’s Park plays host to our Summer Concert Series and our Annual Founder’s Day Celebration of the 1894 Incorporation of the Village.

Our community of 15,178 residents seems to be a prime location for young families looking for affordable housing and high ratings in the 10 components that influence the overall quality of life. In 2024, Business First ranked the Village of Depew as the #1 (Large Hub of Cities and Villages of more than 10,000 residents in western New York) for Quality of Life.

Depew has been a Tree USA City for the past 4 years and it has also been recognized as a leader in WNY when it comes to being designated as a Climate Smart Community.

About the Village of Depew

Depew straddles two townships: Lancaster and Cheektowaga. Split by Transit Road, our 15,000 residents embody the WNY spirit of being good neighbors.

One of the village’s leading attractions is Fireman’s Park, home of the Depew Fire Fighters Memorial and the Depew Ice Pavilion, a swimming pool, playground, gazebo and shelter, and courts for volleyball, basketball and tennis.

The Depew parks feature several wooded trails, picnic facilities, Veterans Memorial Pool, various ball courts, and a horseshoe area. The Buffalo-Depew Amtrak station is located within the Village’s western border.

Although most students in the village are served by the Depew Union Free School District, which operates Cayuga Heights Elementary School, Depew Middle School, and Depew High School, some attend Lancaster, Cheektowaga-Maryvale, or Cheektowaga Centra School Districts.

Town of Elma: About Elma

Located in the center of Erie County, Elma is home to the oldest fire company in the county, despite being the last town incorporated within its borders. Named for a large American Elm at one of the town intersections, Elma’s 12,000 residents are surrounded by acres of trails and fields.

Moog Inc., Steuben Foods Inc., Excelsior Orthopaedics Sports Performance Center, Servotronics and The Columns Banquets are among some of the large businesses in Elma, which also includes a wide range of small businesses, a retail plaza in the center of town and a number of restaurants.

There’s a large variety of leisure-time activities for all ages. The Elma Senior Center sits next to the 20-acre Village Green Park, featuring picnic shelters, a one-mile walking track and a playground.

Baseball, football and soccer fields are available at Creek Road Park, and the 18-hole Elma Meadows Golf Course and Park is known as one of the area’s best public golf courses, in addition to winter activities including cross-country skiing and sledding.

Students in the town mostly attend the Iroquois Central School District, which also serves students from Marilla, Wales, Aurora, Bennington, and Lancaster.

Uncovering History in the Village of Lancaster

Construction workers uncover artifacts on site of new W. Main St. building

There is more to W. Main St. than meets the eye.

Heavy equipment operators unearthed several historic gems while preparing the foundation for the new Lancaster Village Center building. The discovery in April of 2024 of a rare tire store sign and several unbroken bottles were a reminder of the street as it once was. The excavation operators could have easily plowed over what they unearthed, but instead saved it. W. Main St., one of the oldest in the Village, has served as the hub of the business district since it was cut in 1810.

“These amazing finds at the site allow us to step back into the early 1900s. We need to remember the history of the site when it was a bustling business community,” said Tom Sweeney, developer of the property and owner of Glassco Management LLC.

Finding anything from the pre-Urban Renewal era is truly incredible. These artifacts have miraculously survived several construction projects over the decades. There was the initial demolition of the businesses on both sides of the street during the Urban Renewal blitz of 1966-1970. That was followed by the construction of the Big H plaza, the demo of the BOCES building, several paving jobs, and the more recent extension of W. Main St.

During its heyday of the 1940-1950s, W. Main St. was lined with 50 or so small shops and family businesses. Excavation operators are ordinarily on the lookout for buried pipes and other underground hazards. One of the operators said the hole he was digging had water in it and he saw several bottles floating on top. He got off his machine and put them aside.

Among the interesting finds was an empty “Eckles” embalming fluid bottle. The 16-ounce clear glass container was very likely from one of three undertaking businesses that occupied 22 W. Main from 1893-1923. Another bottle was from the popular “Voegles Bottling Works,” which operated at 36 W. Main from 1893-1960s. The bottle had a very distinct “V” on the bottom and “Lancaster, New York” under the name.

A sign which read: “Firestone Tires - Most miles per dollar,” was embedded into a large block of concrete. The sign was badly damaged, but salvageable. A jack hammer was used to free it. It was from either Repka’s Firestone tire store in the early 1950s or Firestone Auto Supply owned by Frank Newer from 1943-1955. Both businesses were located across the street at 23 W. Main. A ketchup bottle had “H.J. Heinz Co. 57” embossed on the bottom. That bottle could have come from one of three places: Bella’s Restaurant at 24 W. Main, Fitzgerald’s Restaurant at 26 W. Main or Mac and Robbie’s Restaurant also at 26 W. Main.

Yet another bottle had the name “Lang’s” written in script with “Buffalo, New York, contents 7 fluid ounces.” Lang’s was named after Gerhard Lang, who in the late 1800s ran the largest single plant brewery Buffalo ever had. The likely pop bottle was made during prohibition in the 1930s. Another larger bottle could have held vinegar. All seven bottles were machine made as evidence by a visible seam down both sides. Sweeney donated the Firestone sign and all of the bottles to the Town Historian's office. The sign is currently on display.

Work on the Phase 2 building at 15-32 W. Main St. began in March of 2024 and was expected to be completed in 36 months. Similar to its sister building across the street, the new structure will feature first floor office space/retail shops while the upper two floors will have apartments.

Among the goals for Sweeney is to make the Village as walkable as it once was. “We are thankful for the opportunity and for the community support as we work hard to improve our Village business district. We have a responsibility to both respect the past as we build the future,” he said.

History & Future: Town of Lancaster

Like Depew and the Elma, the origins of the Town of Lancaster begin with the “keepers of the western door,” the Senecas of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Anyone in the town, though, with a home built before the 1860s likely has the same first entry on their house’s title history: the Holland Land Company.

Purchasing and selling decisions by Holland and other land companies would eventually lead to the borders of Lancaster. In the late 1700s, New York State and Massachusetts settled their border dispute, finalizing the counties of NYS. Around 1810, Warren Hull built his stone house near Ellicott Creek (learn more or plan a visit at HullFamilyHistory.com.) In the 1830s, the first town in Erie County – Clarence, where Hull house was built – was divided into several towns. That decision put the Hull house inside the borders of the newly formed Lancaster. Though theories abound, no one is really sure why our town was named after a city in England; nor why we say Lan-CAST-er but Pennsylvanians pronounce theirs as LANC-as-ter.

Population waves into Lancaster followed the immigration pattern seen across the state: German, Polish, Hungarian, Ukrainian, Italian, and Irish families found their way to the town, drawn by manufacturing and railroad jobs. Following the Civil War and the Great Migration of Black Americans from southern states, many second-generation European immigrants moved from Buffalo to Lancaster.

The town saw an influx in the 1960s and again in the 1990s. Today, 45,000 people call Lancaster home. If you’re interested in more about the history of our town, the public library has an extensive collection of local history, including maps and residential directories from generations past. The town’s Historical Society is located on Clark Street.

Village of Depew

Long before the Village of Depew officially straddled two towns, it was recognized as a crossroads and place of opportunity. Like most of the surrounding land, it was the people of the Seneca Nation who established communities on the land to the east of the Buffalo River. The Treaty of Big Tree in 1797 established means for European settlers to acquire land and soon, German farmers and artisans were building homes and businesses on the five square miles that would become Depew.

Polish families followed in the mid-1800s. They were joined by Hungary and Ukraine immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s. A Polish library was opened at the corner of Broadway and Sweet in 1889. The area, known informally as Cayugatown, caught the attention of industrialists, and was identified by Chauncey Mitchell Depew as the site for his company’s headquarters.

President of Hudson River and Harlem Railroad saw the village as an ideal location due to its proximity to Buffalo and the opportunity to build a link on the lines between Chicago and New York City. The village of Depew, named after the early industrialist, was incorporated on July 23, 1894.

Depew maintains that centrally-located small village feel. Just minutes from major expressways, shopping, tourism stops, the Buffalo airport, and downtown Bufallo, Depew’s motto is right, “The Village of Unexcelled Opportunity.”

Town of Elma

The Town of Elma was originally occupied by the Seneca Indians, who were one of five tribes in the Iroquois nation in the 1600’s that lived in the western and central areas of New York State. After the Revolutionary War in the late 1700’s, the United States government confiscated the lands of the Iroquois nation and established reservations for the Senecas that decided to remain instead of fleeing to Canada. By treaty in 1826, the Senecas sold to the Ogden Land Company most of the Buffalo Creek Reservation and then by treaty in 1838, sold the remaining to Ogden. In exchange, the U.S. Government was donating land in Kansas to the Senecas.

The white man started to settle in the area building the first sawmills along Buffalo Creek and Cazenovia Creek. Lumber became a major industry as the land was abundant with a variety of trees and construction was in full swing in the city as more and more folks immigrated from Europe to make a life here. Elma started out as part of the towns of Lancaster and Aurora before it was incorporated in 1857 as a new town bordering Marilla, West Seneca, Lancaster, and Aurora.

As more folks settled in the area through the late 1800’s and into the 1900’s, schools, churches, and stores were built. Small communities were established such as Elma Center, Elma Village, Springbrook, Blossom, and East Elma. As transportation of goods into the city increased, roads were built and improved to handle the trade and the railroad became a major mode of transportation into the City of Buffalo for commuting workers.

The town in the 21st century has grown to more than 11,000 residents and is host to major industry including Moog and Steuben Foods. Residents enjoy the rural atmosphere and the town works to maintain that friendly rural feeling we have enjoyed for many years.

Celebrating 150 Years

Lancaster Fire Department

In 2024, the Lancaster Fire Department’s oldest company, Rescue Hook & Ladder Company, celebrated 150 years of bravery and service. Along with the Eagle Hose Company (organized in 1885), Protective Hose Company (organized 1896), and the Citizen Hose Company (organized 1899), Rescue Hook and Ladder is a core part of the Village of Lancaster.

The company’s history is rich with dedicated community members, marked by moments of tragedy, and a key part of what makes the Town of Lancaster and its villages such a special place.

The village’s population reached a point where a stand-alone fire brigade seemed necessary in 1873. It would take seven years for the brigade to get a home of their home in a fire hall on Railroad Street (later Central Ave), and they would need a $100 loan to purchase their first bell.

As is often the case when humans are figuring out the best way to organize ourselves to help our neighbors, companies were created, disbanded, reformed, and then disbanded again. By 1894, though, the company had a hand pumper and a working company. On April 4, a fire ripped through many of West Main Street and Central Avenue businesses.

Learning from the experiences of fighting that fire, Lancaster formed an additional company. Two years later, on October 21, 1896, Lancaster suffered another disastrous fire that destroyed another part of the Central business district, which included the Lancaster fire hall itself. The Fire Bell purchased in 1880 was saved and transferred to the Opera House/Town Hall tower. It’s the same bell you hear today.

Another population boom meant that by 1903, there was a need for a company dedicated to protecting the residents of the eastern section of the village. Just 10 years later, Lancaster was already being recognized for the village’s dedication to public safety and hosted the Western New York Volunteer Fireman’s Association convention. Thousands of firefighters came to town.

In the decades leading up to the creation of the 911 system in 1975, Lancaster grew from a quiet town separated into neighborhoods to a proper municipality with designated fire districts, a new municipal building, an ambulance service, and a water tower. The first woman firefighter, Carol “Bunny” Botler joined in 1984, becoming part of the department’s shift into its modern form.

The Greater Lancaster Museum of Firefighting opened to the public in 2007 and showcases the local history of the fire companies in the region. That same year, the Christmasville Fire Truck Parade first delighted residents and visitors. It now brings in thousands of spectators and more than 200 fire vehicles to the Lancaster region.

Becoming a modern firefighting department sometimes means letting go of the past; the village’s alarm boxes were eliminated in 2008. That history, though, isn’t gathering mothballs. The new and recreated Firefighter Park, at the end of West Main Street, displays pictures from the department’s past and memorials to the past fire chiefs, veterans, and the history of the Lancaster Fire Department.

Town of Lancaster: Development & Growth

As the Town of Lancaster has grown, there have been growing concerns about increased traffic in the community, additional stress placed on public safety services, and more demand on the sewer and water systems. It remains to be seen what the impact will be of the recent moratorium on commercial residential development within the town, but what is clear is how residents of this charming Erie County community just east of Buffalo feel about their home.

“Lancaster is a great town – it’s grown tremendously and we now have around 45,000 residents,” said John Pilato, the Town of Lancaster’s Highway Supervisor since the start of 2022. “It’s a town where I was born, where I grew up and where I graduated from (Lancaster High School). The amazing people in this town are not just my friends, but they have turned into my family.”

The Town of Lancaster’s population has plateaued over the last several years, but the number of residents jumped from 41,604 in 2010 to 45,036 in 2020 – an 8.3% increase – according to the U.S. Census. This led to an increased number of residential development projects within the community that the Lancaster Town Board is now trying to tap the brakes on. In November 2024, the Board “unanimously approved extending a one-year moratorium on new commercial residential development until March 31” to give “the town additional time to hold public hearings to gather the input of residents on any proposed changes.”

“The Town Board doesn’t want home after home up against each other,” Pilato said. “They want more open spaces and to maintain the integrity of the community.”

“These new subdivisions also add more lane miles of roads and more costs to my department, such as for plowing and salting,” he said. “The more buildings that go up, the more strain there is on the department.”

The Town of Lancaster’s Highway Department performs year-round maintenance on 164.5 lane miles of Town road and 239.75 when including Erie County roads.

With another snow-filled, Western New York winter – and concerns with the rock salt supply –– behind them, residents’ thoughts have shifted to enjoying the town’s beautiful outdoor recreational areas, including the 175-acre Westwood Park, the Westwood Park Memorial Garden, Waldon Pond Park, Keysa Park, Meadow Lea Park, and the 4-mile-long Heritage Trail.

Pilato and the residents of the Town of Lancaster are also once again looking forward to the community’s biggest event of the year, the 4th of July celebration organized by the Village of Lancaster.

“The celebration draws between 10 and 15,000 people,” Pilato said. “It’s just incredible.”

Community Center Update

The Depew Community Center completed Phase One of the renovation of 570 Gould Avenue in Depew and opened in September 2024. The building includes a low-cost laundry with a coffee bar and free computer access; a gymnasium/assembly space with a stage; fully renovated restrooms and a large residential kitchen. Plans to add a parking lot with ADA accessibility and office space are underway. Future development of the basement to add additional program space is planned.

The Center’s vision is a space where residents come to experience the power of community, have opportunities for cultural engagement and access resources to help them provide for their families and create the life they desire. On any given day, many activities happen in the community center including use of the laundry, Lancaster Opera House rehearsals, dance and fine arts lessons, exercise classes, community events, fundraisers and private events and meetings. There is always a sense of excitement and joy when laughter fills the space as residents gather to enjoy everything we have to offer.

A Beacon of Hope, Healing and Grief Literacy for Western New York Families

Death is the ultimate life disruptor. There is no greater pain or stressor of our human experience than suffering the loss of a person we love. Yet for generations, grieving people have had to navigate debilitating anguish within a death-denying culture that often seeks to avoid the discomfort of loss and support of the bereaved, further compounding people’s pain and isolation.

Since 2013, P.U.N.T. Pediatric Cancer Collaborative has stepped up to meet the needs of grieving parents and siblings who have suffered a loss to pediatric cancer through building up a network of peer support. Time and time again, we have witnessed the sacred relief and peace of those transcendent moments where vacant eyes of broken parents bearing the depths of unspeakable pain could finally lock eyes with another who has walked in their shoes, and with barely a word being uttered, find the gift of true understanding.

We have listened in awe to conversations between bereaved children, as they finally have a safe place to talk openly about their sister or brother who died and feel normal. We have heard teens talk to other teens and young adults about the survivor’s guilt they have when they out-age their deceased sibling, or how invisible and alone they feel in their grief as they beat it down day after day so as not to further burden their decimated parents. We have received desperate calls from school leaders, asking for skills on how to message a student loss and support grieving students. We have been asked by our health care partners for better tools to handle families in the “worst-case scenario” aftermath.

We know that 1 in 11 children in WNY will lose a parent or sibling by the age of 18. (Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model; JAG Institute). Bereaved children are at higher risk of every negative outcome including mental health issues, substance misuse, academic difficulties, behavioral changes and even early mortality. Grieving parents and caregivers struggle to support these children as they are in the depths and darkness of their own pain.

Believing that no family should be alone to navigate the death of a loved one, we are creating a safe, dedicated place that promotes health and well-being, where kids and families can heal together at no cost. WNY Compassion Connection will provide a supportive, empathetic haven for grieving children and families. Through outreach, we also be an active beacon of grief literacy and education within our region’s schools, workplaces and community. Together, this place and related efforts will foster hope, resilience, and a healthy path forward for children suffering the pain of loss through every developmental stage and will be an antidote to the devastation and incapacitation of grief within a family.

We are honored to be working with partners from across the nation and our community to create a best in class family grief center right in Lancaster for our region’s bereaved families that will serve as a source of help and hope for generations to come.

In the Limelight: Lancaster Legend “Buffalo Joe”

Students in the Lancaster School District know themselves as the Lancaster Legends. But the community has seen Lancaster High alumnus and NFL Buffalo Bills linebacker #44 “Buffalo Joe” Andreessen give the moniker new meaning through accomplishments and contributions made on and off the football field.

The Bills signed Andreessen, a former University at Buffalo football standout, in May 2024. By December 2024, Sports Illustrated noted Andreessen as the “undrafted linebacker (who) was the team’s top tackler,” in the Week 17 game against the New York Jets, describing him as “the rookie linebacker (who) was deployed for the fourth quarter of the 40-14 runaway victory.”

But Andreessen’s performance that day would be just one of many demonstrations of Andreessen’s athleticism and tenacity.

A 6-foot-1, 232-pound native of Depew, New York, Andreessen spent five seasons at Bryant University, where he earned All-America honors after obtaining a school-record 116 tackles in 2022. He spent his last season playing for the University at Buffalo.

Andreessen’s Lancaster high school coach Eric Rupp remembers the athlete well.

“Joe was the most complete player that I have ever coached, “ Rupp said. “He was fast, physical and could play any position on the football field. Additionally, he was a great teammate and a leader on and off the field. His work ethic and character were unmatched.”

With a childhood dream of playing football, Andreessen said the work ethic is something he learned from his father and brother, JD, who was a skilled baseball player and someone who played Division 1 baseball at the university level.

“I saw the work that my brother put in and I saw the benefits of the work he put in - it helped make me the best athlete and football player that I could be,” Andreessen said.

“My parents made a lot of sacrifices not just for me, but my brother as well, to move forward in our lives and most importantly, they made both of us good men,” he said.

While he was taught by both mother Jody and father Paul to dream big and work hard to accomplish his dreams, Andreesen also learned not to let those dreams get in the way of being an upstanding, compassionate person within the community.

Andreessen shared he has interest in the work of P.U.N.T. pediatric cancer collaborative, a charity that provides support to families facing a pediatric cancer diagnosis. He has also worked with Be a Blessing Buffalo during the winter holiday season. The charity provides gifts and support to families facing job loss, illness and other life-altering situations. Andreessen has also garnered attention on local Buffalo news station WKBW for being a cheerleader to Bo, his 10-year-old cousin who has a rare genetic disorder, by supporting the Elma Dream League, an adaptive baseball league in which he plays. Andreessen understands that life can be unpredictable, but attitude is key.

“Whatever you pursue in life, there are going to be ups and downs and bumps in the road, there are going to be good times as well … but being able to have a growth mindset is the most important thing,” he said. “Enjoy the process and enjoy the journey … good things come to those who act in good faith and work hard toward what they want.”

Memories of a Lancaster Legend

Andreeson’s high school coach Eric Rupp shared his favorite memory of Andreeson was the 2017 New York State Semi Final Playoff Game vs. CNS.

“We were trailing in the game 14 - 6 in the 3rd quarter. Our team needed a spark so we decided to put Joe in at quarterback. He completely dominated the second half. He had 143 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns and he threw a 20 yard touchdown pass,” Rupp said. “We ended up winning that game 35 - 21. This would be Lancaster’s first ever trip to the state championship, thanks in large part to Joe’s heroic effort that night.”

Audrey Hamernik: A Life of Service Well-Lived

Audrey Hamernik has dedicated over 50 years to community service, making a profound impact on the Village of Depew and surrounding areas. As a Corporate-Wide Community Champion with Tops Friendly Markets, Audrey has played a pivotal role in fostering strong business and community relationships. Her dedication extends into local government, where she had served as a Trustee, Planning Board Chairperson, and Deputy Mayor of the Village of Depew, shaping policies that enhance the quality of life for residents.

Beyond her official roles, Audrey has been a passionate advocate for numerous organizations. The Depew Community Center was her vision for a center that could serve the community in need. Her relentless efforts to fundraise and engage folks that could help fulfill this vision is the cornerstone and foundation of this organization’s success. In addition, Audrey was an active board member of the Lancaster Depew Elma Chamber of Commerce, supporting local businesses and economic growth. As a Focus For Our Community Unity & Support Addiction Prevention Coalition Member, she helped combat substance abuse issues, ensuring a healthier future for local families. Another passion project was to collect personal care items and snacks for our troops overseas while working with organizations, donors, and local government to have these items shipped.

Audrey’s commitment to education was evident in her involvement with Depew’s Academy of Finance and the Scholastic Book Program in Maryvale Schools, where she fostered financial literacy and literacy development among young students. Her dedication to addressing food insecurity is reflected in her service with the Depew Tri-Community Food Pantry.

She also served as a member of the Depew Fire Department Auxiliary and was instrumental in the Depew Girl Scouts Program, empowering young girls with essential life skills. A devoted parishioner, she has been honored with the Saint Christopher Award at Saint Barnabas R.C. Church for her faith-driven service.

Audrey Hamernik’s unwavering commitment to her community has left a lasting legacy, inspiring countless individuals to give back and make a difference.
