Lakeview is one of the largest neighborhoods in Chicago. Just minutes north of downtown, Lakeview’s vibrant streets boast some of Chicago’s best culture, shopping and dining. Our neighborhood welcomes you and is easily accessible by the Paulina or Southport Brown Line. ROSCOE VILLAGE

Roscoe Village has earned the nickname “The Village Within the City” for its small-town feel and overall charm. Nestled between Lakeview to the east, Northcenter to the north and Lincoln Park to the south, Roscoe Village has become a melting pot of demographics and businesses.

Visitors and neighbors alike flock to Lakeview and Roscoe Village year-round to experience the natural beauty of the neighborhoods with vibrant shops, lively arts, top-rated eateries and nightlife, and award-winning theaters. The Southport Corridor, easily accessible via the CTA Brown Line and a short walk from Wrigley Field, is a go-to regional destination for the perfect day shopping. Roscoe Street is filled with boutiques, restaurants, bakeries and friendly small businesses that gives these blocks a small-town, “Main Street” feel within a sprawling metropolis. The Belmont Business Corridor is known for its many antique shops and variety of service-based businesses, including salons, childcare and education, pet care, health and wellness. When you take a stroll down Belmont Avenue, you are sure to find something unique for your home and new service businesses to support your needs.

History

LAKEVIEW

In the late 19th century, many Chicago residents left the city and migrated north to what was then an agricultural region. At the time, this area was known as America’s celery capital, with many farms growing the crop. It would soon become Lakeview. The newcomers turned the farmland into suburban subdivisions and incorporated as a city in 1887. Just two years later, Lakeview’s residents voted to join the city of Chicago, despite the town’s mayor reportedly calling them “fools.”

Lakeview grew into a prosperous industrial neighborhood, with factories on Diversey Parkway and along the railroad that ran down Lakewood Avenue. A few old businesses survive, including Monastery Hill Bindery, founded by a German immigrant before the Fire – a reminder of Lakeview’s German community.

Lakeview started switching names regularly, a sure sign gentrification was coming. New Town, Wrigleyville, Boystown, Belmont Harbor, Graceland West: Some labels stuck and some didn’t. Lakeview grew into the neighborhood it is today, a fashionable urban locale with a deep history and a future yet to be written.*

ROSCOE VILLAGE

Roscoe Village began as a community at the end of the 19th century when developers bought the land west of Western Avenue to construct the “world’s largest amusement park.” Also called Riverview Park, the park officially opened in 1903.

As visitors flocked to the park, businesses began to open along Belmont, Roscoe and Western to serve the thousands of visitors coming to the park each year. About half of these businesses were bars and taverns. A few dozen amusement park workers also moved to the area and built their homes.

The village experienced its first boom in economic development around 1920. Frame houses and brick and greystone two-flats sprung up, making Roscoe Village “the place to be.”

Classic Chicago architecture like brownstones, bungalows and factory spaces converted into condos can be found throughout Roscoe Village. Nicknamed “The Village Within the City,” the primary business corridor of Roscoe Street provides an abundance of locally-owned restaurants and shops.

Landmarks

Gross Park

Even a small space in the center of a street can become a beautiful park, and Gross Park is the perfect example of that! It is a true neighborhood community space in the center of Henderson Street surrounded by homes. The Park is home to native prairie plants, and it also features educational signage about the plants and their environmental benefits. It has also hosted community events like Shakespeare in the Park, making it a destination for both fun and relaxation.

Clark Park Natural Area

Clark Park is one of the neighborhood’s largest parks, featuring a boathouse, trails, athletic fields and more in the 22-acre expanse of greenspace. Nature lovers can come and enjoy one of the park’s hidden gems, the Clark Park Natural Area. This nature preserve is located on the south side of the park and features an array of native plants and trees. The park’s grounds have a fascinating history. In the 1800s, it was the site of a German hunting preserve, then in 1906, the Riverview Amusement Park opened on the same site. The amusement park, which was the largest in the world at one time, was open until 1967, making way for the Clark Park we know and love today.

Roscoe Village Bridge

The Roscoe Village Bridge, located at Roscoe and Ravenswood, proudly welcomes residents and visitors to the neighborhood with a display of the neighborhood slogan, “The Village Within the City.” The eye-catching mural is painted on the bridge of the Union Pacific North Metra line train track, which connects the city to the northern suburbs and to Wisconsin, with the last stop on the line landing in Kenosha. Located on a charming residential street just two blocks away from the neighborhood’s vibrant business corridor, the bridge and the mural represent the spirit of the community.

Lakeview Low-Line at Paulina Station Beneath the CTA ‘L’ Tracks

The Lakeview Low-Line re-envisions the half-mile space beneath the CTA ‘L’ tracks between Southport and Lincoln avenues as an exciting Chicago art destination and a fun and dynamic path connecting Lakeview. As a unique attraction, the Lakeview Low-Line not only beautifies and greens the neighborhood, but also has the potential to become a landmark attracting attention to Lakeview and Roscoe Village while encouraging both visitors and residents to explore our local business districts.

The Girl and the City, Matthew Mederer (2024): 1601 W. Belmont Ave

“The Girl and the City” is a vibrant celebration of Chicago’s rich cultural tapestry and a reminder of the importance of carving out moments and space for oneself. The painting features a young woman, adorned in Chicago-inspired fashion, seated on a shelf brimming with literary treasures about the city. She’s engrossed in the New York Times bestseller, “The Time Traveller’s Wife.” Behind her, the shelf dissolves into a stunning sunset that illuminates the iconic Chicago skyline, blending the personal and the urban.

The Light We Share, Waleed Johnson (2025): Lakeview Low-Line Walkway

“The Light We Share” is one of the latest installations on the panels in the Lakeview Low-Line, which rotates periodically to highlight new art by local artists. This installation features paintings of smiling faces, which pop against the colored backgrounds. The four faces, on four different panels, represent a variety of cultures and ethnicities, but all share the common feature of a bright smile, sharing a beautiful message about our diversity and our unity as humans.

The Freedom of the Soul, Melina Scotte (2025): Lincoln & Barry Intersection

This mural, located on Lincoln and Barry, is a colorful, abstract piece representing freedom, peace and the search of identity through the lens of the LGBTQIA+ community. It features figures against the colors associated with the Progress Pride Flag, intersecting each figure with a dynamic contrast representing the wide diversity to be found when exploring the LGBTQIA+ spectrum.

Lakeview/Roscoe Village Restaurants Offer Culinary World Tour

Looking for the tastes of popular and exotic dishes from around the globe? You don’t have to travel far as restaurants in Lakeview and Roscoe Village offer a wide variety of delicacies from South America, the Mediterranean and other regions – far and wide.

Here’s a look at some of what you’ll find.

Julia Casale and Patrick Walsh spent three months in Europe preparing to bring wines and authentic products to the Chicago area. The result: the European-themed Maison Pasquale specialty food and wine shop that opened in August 2025 in Lakeview/Roscoe Village.

“We have sandwiches that we make here. We have a wine section mostly from Europe, but we also have domestic wines,” said Walsh, who grew up with his mother in the south of France and is engaged to Casale, his business partner.

Casale, a native of upstate New York and offspring of a family with an Italian background, comes from the food side of the business, having worked in the food division of several hotels, including the Four Seasons in Boston. Her promotion to director of Food & Beverage at the Four Seasons Chicago introduced the couple to the area.

“The Pistou soup recipe is from my grandmother in France, and our meatballs and sausage are from Julia’s family in Italy,” Walsh said. “It’s different tastes that people don’t find around here. It’s from the older generations in Europe.”

The focus on European products sets Maison Pasquale apart from other businesses in the Chicago area, Walsh said. And, there is a strong French community in Lincoln Park and Ravenswood that made that area attractive to Walsh and Casale, who live in Roscoe Village.

Maria Uzcategui and Kharim Rincon began their dream of bringing Venezuelan food to the Chicago area by selling arepas on the streets. They made the ground-maize flatbreads – which can be filled with meats, vegetables or other ingredients – and sold them to pedestrians and in businesses.

They’ve grown that into three Rica Arepa restaurants.

“We are a husband-and-wife team passionate about sharing authentic Venezuelan traditions in Chicago,” the couple proclaim on their website.

Their first Rica Arepa opened in 2017 in Hermosa, followed by a second location in 2021 in Lakeview. The newest location, on Addison Street in Dunning, opened its doors in the fall of 2024.

The menu includes a variety of arepas, including dishes of steak, shredded beef, chicken, fried pork and calamari; vegetarian and vegan meals; empanadas; and a variety of other dishes and drinks.

The couple immigrated to the United States after finishing high school and culinary school in Venezuela and found jobs working in restaurants in the Miami area. They were intent on learning English and customs of their new home, and wound up in the Chicago area, where there was a growing population of Venezuelans.

Turquoise Cafe and Restaurant is Chicago’s destination for a taste of dishes from Turkey and the surrounding Mediterranean Sea.

Owner/Chef Ezgi Bozdas draws on recipes inspired by her native Turkey for a diverse menu that attracts diners to the Roscoe Village neighborhood for lunch, dinner, parties, special occasions and catered meals.

The menu is not confined to Turkish fare but is “a fusion, a little bit of everything,” the chef said. Her favorite dish: roasted lamb shank cooked slowly for eight hours and served with risotto.

Turquoise brings the comfort and familiarity of being hosted like a guest at someone’s home. With thoughtfully curated fixed menu options and the flexibility to create customized menus based on budget, the team makes group and special event dining feel effortless.

It hosts Jazz Nights every Friday and Saturday. Attending guests can enjoy live music while sipping from an extended wine selection. Also popular is a Sunday brunch served family style that features sweet and savory offerings inspired by the morning rituals of Turkey’s Anatolia peninsula.

Overall, Bozdas describes Turquoise as her dream job, that is like “having guests in my house every day.”

Other Restaurants Offering Global Cuisines

The Lakeview-Roscoe Village communities are filled with international restaurants to please your palate. Here are a few more globally inspired spots to pique your taste buds:

Dhanteraz, a popular restaurant in Roscoe Village, is known for its modern take on Indian cuisine. Many of its classic Indian dishes feature innovative twists.

Cafe El Tapatio, a Mexican restaurant established in 1974 by a family from Guadalajara, offers the Roscoe Village/Lakeview area a diverse menu of traditional dishes and authentic flavors, served in a festive atmosphere.

Olive Mountain Grill, which opened in 2005 on North Lincoln Avenue, features Mediterranean dishes passed down for generations. Popular items include falafel and rich, creamy hummus, along with baklava for those with a sweet tooth.

Explore On Bike or On Foot

Great adventures are just a quick ride or stroll away

Large metropolitan cities rarely hold the charm and feel of smaller communities. The Lakeview Roscoe Village community has captured all the best aspects of local small-town vibe and crafted a residential, retail shopping, dining and entertainment area unmatched by other areas in Chicago. The area benefits greatly from the walkability and bikeability of the region. The Lakeview Roscoe Village area is the perfect location to go for a ride or take a stroll through tree-lined streets comprised of brick buildings and storefronts with nostalgic esthetics and beautiful pedestrian and cycling paths.

Michael Salvatore, founder of Heritage Bikes & Coffee, has been in business at the Lincoln Avenue location for 15 years. Salvatore is a fifth-generation Chicago resident who has lived on the North Side his entire life. He takes his involvement in the community seriously by sponsoring a local bicycle racing team and many activities and events throughout the year. His business provides bicycle rentals and repairs as well as bikes for sale. The Heritage Bike brand, in fact, is designed and handmade in Chicago. The shop also carries all types of accessories such as beautiful bike bags, saddles, professional helmets, lights and more. Heritage Bikes & Coffee is also a coffee shop and café with a full kitchen.

“Lincoln Avenue, Southport, all these thoroughfares have great bicycle infrastructure. Every year, we gain more and more mileage of protected bicycling in Chicago. They are thoughtfully connecting a lot of the grid and trying to create thoroughfares that connect with each other so that cyclists can commute all over the city,” said Salvatore. A great day in Lakeview for Salvatore consists of purchasing a book at a local bookstore and maybe having some lunch and then hopping on a bike to head toward the lake. “That’s what I always do. We’re not too far from the lake, and we have great bike paths there,” Salvatore said.

Lesley Tweedie, co-owner of Roscoe Village Bikes, recommends that people use the bike lanes that have been added on various streets nearby her shop on Roscoe, Damon and Leavitt Streets.

“There is a really great bike lane network. The city of Chicago provides bike maps, and so we always have a big stack of bike maps that are available for free, and they show all of the bike lanes and recommended routes throughout the whole city,” said Tweedie. “We are always happy to chat with people about routes, too. If they tell us where they are trying to ride, we’ll suggest a number of good ways to get there.”

Tweedie said that work was done recently on the bike lanes on Belmont just south of the shop, providing a needed improvement. She also enjoys the bike path to the west of the shop that runs along the river and goes very far to the north. “It’s really beautiful, all off-street paths. When you cross the major streets, there are underpasses or bridges. It just makes for such a beautiful ride. Those bridges are dedicated to bikes and pedestrians, so it feels very comfortable,” said Tweedie. Roscoe Village Bikes offers rentals, sales and repair service. The store stocks a wide range of accessories like lights, locks, helmets, bells, bags, baskets and racks.

“We have a really great community of small businesses, and everybody is very kind and really interested in offering great products and services for the neighborhood,” said Tweedie.

Coming into the area from elsewhere in Chicago is simple. Paulina Station is on the Chicago Transit Authority’s Brown Line. From Paulina Station Hub, Roscoe Village, Southport and Lakeview are all close by.

The Southport Corridor is easily accessible by transit, biking or walking, making this area attractive to a diverse demographic. Tree-lined streets, historic charm and a plethora of unique local businesses mixed with a variety of residential styles make Southport Corridor a fantastic place to walk, bike, shop, eat and live. While in the area, be sure to check out the culturally iconic Music Box Theatre, grab a snack at Southport Grocery & Cafe and create your own scent at Aura Candle Bar.

Residents can find their perfect gym nearby

The vibrant North Side Chicago neighborhoods of Lakeview and Roscoe Village feature a diverse mix of fitness and wellness businesses. From high-intensity group classes to holistic mind-body movement and specialized youth programs, the area offers options for a broad range of ages and fitness goals.

CrossTown Fitness specializes in 50-minute group classes that blend strength, endurance, mobility and cardiovascular work into a dynamic format suitable for all fitness levels. With over 200 classes weekly, schedules typically include total body, strength & mobility, run and row formats—each designed to vary daily to keep workouts fresh. Personal one-on-one training and small group training sessions are also available for individualized coaching. Steven Kopp, director of Operations at Crosstown Fitness, highlighted one member, who combined group, personal training and open gym to train for and compete in the HYROX competition, an indoor fitness race.

“His journey,” Kopp said, “is a great example of what CrossTown is all about: putting in the work, staying consistent and using the tools and community around you to keep leveling up.”

Drop-in group fitness classes are in the $15–$30 range, with personal training from about $50–$100+ per session. CTF also offers trial passes and promotions such as free introductory passes during special events.

This neighborhood is the perfect place to energize residents of all ages, including little ones. Tutu School is a dance education business focused on children’s creative movement and ballet, appealing to families in Roscoe Village. The school’s programming centers on ballet and creative movement classes for young children, with curriculum tailored by age and developmental stage. Classes emphasize foundational dance skills, coordination, musicality and confidence for young participants. Tuition is structured as a monthly installment paid on the first of each month and is prorated for mid-month enrollments; specific rates vary by class level and session length.

Yoga enthusiasts of all skill levels will feel right at home in Lakeview and Roscoe Village. YogaSix is a nationally franchised yoga studio on Southport Avenue serving the Lakeview community with a modern yoga experience. The studio offers six core types of classes: Y6 101 (beginner introduction); Y6 Slow Flow (slow, mindful movement); Y6 Signature (classic flow); Y6 Power Flow (more dynamic); Y6 Sculpt & Flow (weights and bodyweight integration); and Y6 Restore (gentler stretch and recovery). Class prices range from $25–$35+ per session, with package and monthly options available.

“Something so special about our team is that we know our members on such a deep level,” said Gwen Robbins, general manager of YogaSix. “We know their names, their injuries, their jobs, their families, where they went on vacation and care about all of it. That is the center of who we are as a studio. We aim to create a space where anyone, regardless of experience level, age or body type can feel empowered and connected.”

Move Therapy and Wellness blends body-based yoga movement with mental health support, making it distinct from typical fitness studios. The practice takes a holistic approach that integrates yoga, meditation, breathwork, workshops and therapy. Yoga & Movement Classes focus on breath awareness, mindful movement, restorative yoga and calming flows designed to support mental health and emotional regulation. Free MVMT is a locally focused movement studio that combines dance, yoga, cardio and sculpt classes in a community-oriented space on Lincoln Avenue. The studio’s schedule typically includes dance cardio, Power Yoga Jam, sculpt and strength training, and other creative movement classes designed to be inclusive and fun. Classes are both in-studio and livestreamed, with options for all experience levels. Drop-in classes are approximately $18–$19 per session. A five-class pack is offered at $75–$80. A monthly unlimited pass is typically in the $115 range.

From high-intensity group workouts at CrossTown Fitness to community movement at Free MVMT, children’s creative classes at Tutu School, mind-body yoga at YogaSix and holistic movement and wellness at Move Therapy and Wellness, the Lakeview and Roscoe Village communities offer a broad spectrum of fitness and wellness choices. Each business serves a slightly different need—strength building, youth dance education, emotional wellbeing—reflecting the neighborhood’s diverse and active population. Transportation & Parking

Train & Bus: The Southport, Paulina and Addison stations on the CTA Brown Line provide convenient access to the neighborhood. CTA buses also run through Lakeview and Roscoe Village on Addison, Ashland, Belmont, Diversey, Damen and Western. Find more information at transitchicago.com.

Parking regulations are strictly enforced throughout Lakeview and Roscoe Village. Most commercial streets have metered parking seven days per week, and many residential streets require a residential permit. Always read signs carefully when parking.

The Lakeview Roscoe Village Chamber of Commerce is a community of entrepreneurs working together and supporting each other to create a stronger neighborhood and business environment, through advocacy, promotion, networking and education. The Chamber serves as the sole service provider of Special Service Area (SSA) 27, a local taxing district in Lakeview that supports additional programs and services to supplement city services, including neighborhood promotion and public space enhancements. The Chamber also partners with the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization Friends of Lakeview on community events and capital improvement projects that advance common goals.
