Welcome
From the President:
As president of the Greater Kingston Community Chamber of Commerce, I am honored to celebrate the
diversity and vibrancy of the businesses that form the backbone of our community. From innovative
startups to longstanding family-owned establishments, these businesses not only drive our local economy
but also enrich the spirit of collaboration and growth that defines Kingston.
It’s a privilege to work alongside dedicated entrepreneurs and business leaders who continually
inspire progress and prosperity throughout the region. I am also incredibly grateful for the commitment
and leadership of our Chamber’s board members, whose hard work makes such a positive impact.
I want to extend special thanks to our Executive Director Kaili Roest for her continued dedication to
building Kingston’s vitality. Her efforts, along with those of the Chamber’s board and
members, are crucial to creating an environment where businesses can thrive and our community can
flourish. Together, we continue to focus our efforts towards the Greater Kingston communities; Kingston,
Hansville, Eglon, Indianola, Suquamish and Port Gamble remain a thriving hub of opportunity, innovation
and community spirit.
Thank you,
Angela Clark

Kingston
Kingston was founded in 1853 by Benjamin Bannister and was originally called Apple Tree Cove. By 1880
it was a booming lumber town. Michael King bought a cabin along the shore and moved in with 10 oxen and
10 men. They logged the hillsides around Appletree Cove. King built many small shacks for his men and
animals. In 1882, Mr. King left town and the shacks and bunkhouses quickly filled with drifters,
squatters and old loggers. “Respectable folks” referred to the shanties as
“King’s Town” as a joke. The name evolved into Kingston and stuck!
Kingston is currently experiencing another boom as the Seattle area population continues to swell.
Kingston is closer to the 1-5 corridor than any other community in Kitsap County and with the recent
addition of the Kitsap Transit fast ferry from Kingston to downtown Seattle and the long-running
Washington State Ferry to Edmonds, accessibility to the “cities” is easy.
Local businesses have found themselves successful in Kingston while also providing everything necessary
to support a thriving community to the residents of the greater Kingston area. We have so many different
restaurants offering a variety of options and entertainment. Recreational businesses specializing in
water and wilderness sports. An abundance of retail stores offering unique and curated items.
Additionally, we have ample service organizations and volunteer groups, parks, trails, and natural
resources that add to the appeal of the greater Kingston area.
The beautiful Port of Kingston has many permanent tenants, including some live-aboards. This busy
marina is much sought after by local boaters and hosts many guest boaters, and yacht clubs throughout
the year. These visiting boaters help contribute to the economic vitality of Kingston, by enjoying the
retail and commercial businesses available to them while visiting.
An environment of collaboration among the existing businesses in Kingston invites new opportunities for
even more economic development. With an entrepreneurial spirit, business and community leaders in the
community have explored the potential for economic development in the greater Kingston area. Among the
opportunities revealed are an abundance of spaces and buildings that are occupancy-ready, along with
construction sites available. Couple these positives with the excitement of a growing tourism industry,
and you have a formula for success and expansion that will be evident over the next few years in
Kingston.
Kingston is a recreational playground, and many activities are available year-round. The Kingston
Public Market on Sunday’s May-October, the annual Kingston Wine & Brew Fest, the Kingston Fourth
of July Celebration featuring local musicians, fireworks, and “Tiny Town”, Port
Gamble’s Summer Faire, the Kingston Concerts on the Cove Summer concert series, and Kingston Cove
Christmas are a few of the many events offered in the greater Kingston area.
Supporting these Kingston activities are many community organizations, such as the Greater Kingston
Community Chamber of Commerce, Kingston-North Kitsap Rotary Club, Greater Kingston Kiwanis, volunteers,
and many of our local businesses that take an active role in ensuring the success of these events.
The Kingston Visitors Center (home to the Greater Kingston Community Chamber of Commerce) is located
just up from the ferry landing in the North Star Building and is open five days a week Monday-Friday.
More than 5,000 visitors a year come to our visitor’s center from all over the world. Our office
provides maps, visitor guides and thousands of brochures of things to do on the Kitsap and Olympic
peninsulas along with relocation information for people interested in moving to the area.
More information is also available online at: www.kingstonchamber.com, including information on events, amenities and other valuable local information, and join our mailing list for weekly emails. Our Facebook page Greater Kingston Community Chamber of Commerce is a great resource for locals and visitors. Please become our newest connection.
Suquamish
Suquamish and Indianola are waterfront communities located on the Port Madison Indian Reservation, home
to the Suquamish Tribe, a sovereign nation.
The name Suquamish originated from the Tribe’s winter village site called
“d’suq’wub,” which means “place of clear salt water.”
The Suquamish people inhabited this area of the Puget Sound for thousands of years. Before European
contact in 1792, the region was one of the most populated centers north of what is now Mexico City. The
abundance of natural resources and efficient technology for harvesting and preserving food enabled them
to develop a rich cultural and spiritual life.
Suquamish was the home of Chief Seattle, a powerful tribal leader of the northwest. The city of Seattle
is named for him. Chief Seattle, a great orator and peacekeeper, was instrumental in preserving the
culture of the Suquamish people after the signing of the Treaty of Point Elliott in 1855.
Chief Seattle, Chief Kitsap, Chief Wahalchu and many others lived at Old Man House, on the Suquamish
waterfront. This longhouse, the largest in the region and a center for tribal gatherings, was burned
down in the late 1800s; Old Man House Park, a waterfront park at the location of the longhouse, is open
to visitors during daylight hours. Chief Seattle is buried at the Suquamish Cemetery, which is also open
to visitors. Chief Seattle’s speech, additional history and exhibits of the Suquamish Tribe and
the Port Madison Indian Reservation can be found at the Suquamish Museum.
Suquamish is easily reached by highway and is near the Bainbridge Island and Kingston ferry docks.
The community of Suquamish, in the center of which stands the House of Awakened Culture, is home to
some of Kitsap Peninsula’s most eye-catching views. The area looks across Puget Sound to the city
of Seattle, the Cascade Mountain range, and south to Mount Rainier.
In addition to the Suquamish Museum, Old Man House Park, the Chief Seattle’s gravesite and the
Veterans Memorial, visitors are welcome at the Suquamish Clearwater Casino Resort, with Vegas-style
gaming, world-class entertainment and resort hotel accommodations and spa, as well as the White Horse
Golf Club and Agate Dreams cannabis.
The Suquamish community hosts visiting tribal canoe families during the annual canoe journey with food
and dance, music and sharing among Tribes from all over the coastal Northwest. Since 1993, when the
Bella Bella people of northern British Columbia challenged the Canoe Nations to paddle to their shores,
the Canoe Journey has been an annual event with stops up and down the coast.
During the third weekend in August, the Suquamish Tribe celebrates Chief Seattle Days. This three-day
celebration is open to everyone. The event features traditional song and dance, a ceremony at Chief
Seattle’s gravesite, a fun run, and a variety of games and contests. Canoe races for children and
adults celebrate the coastal peoples’ relationship with the water. Food and art vendors offer
traditional products for sale.
The Suquamish Museum is a substantial resource for more information about Suquamish, and the Tribe’s website, www.suquamish.nsn.us includes history, culture and current happenings on the reservation.
Hansville
Located at the northernmost tip of the Kitsap Peninsula is Hansville, Washington. Historically a mecca
for salmon fishing, this tiny town at one time boasted seven operating resorts along its beaches. The
resorts are gone, however Hansville remains a wildly popular destination for sport fishing by boat,
kayak or by surf casting from shore.
Hansville also has three county parks, a Nature Conservancy Preserve and multiple wetlands offering
year round world class bird watching. With 260 acres and more than seven miles of trails, the Hansville
Greenway Trail System links Puget Sound to Hood Canal and provides habitat protection for a wide variety
of wildlife including black bear, deer, beaver, owl, coyote and even cougar.
The oldest lighthouse on Puget Sound, the Point No Point Lighthouse, is located in Hansville. The
United States Lighthouse Headquarters is housed here, offering information, lighthouse tours, gifts and
overnight accommodations onsite.
In 1879 construction was begun on the Point No Point Lighthouse and on Jan. 1, 1880, it officially went
into service.
About the same time the area started to see the arrival of settlers, mostly Norwegian, Swedish and
Finnish immigrants. Two Norwegian settlers, Hans Zachariasen and Anton Husby, ran a ferry service from
steamers anchored offshore to the beach near the lighthouse. As legend has it, Anton was a conservative
and highly moralistic man. He refused to ferry anyone who had been drinking spirits of any kind. Upon
learning they may be stranded on the beach, one Scandinavian sailor remarked to his friend, “Vell,
how vill vee get back to the ship if Anton von’t ferry us?” “Oh don’t
vorry,” said his fellow shipmate, “If Anton von’t, Hans vill.” And thusly the
town is called Hansville.

Port Gamble s’kallam
The Port Gamble S’Klallam reservation is located on the northern tip of the Kitsap Peninsula in
Washington State. It is adjacent to Port Gamble Bay – a stunning scenic waterway that has provided
sustenance to the Port Gamble S’Klallam people for more than 1,000 years. Many of the
tribe’s more than 1,150 members depend on the bay for personal use and/or commercial fishing and
shellfishing.
Originally known as the Nux Sklai Yem or the Strong People, the Port Gamble S’Klallam are
descendants of the Salish people who have lived on the Salish Sea and surrounding areas since 2400 B.C.
The Tribe’s original ancestral village was located in what is known today as the town of Port
Gamble. The S’Klallam were asked to relocate in 1853 to make way for the sawmill to open at the
townsite.
The Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe is dedicated to maintaining its traditional way of life and does
so, in part, by acting as a steward for the environment which has included the protection of Port Gamble
Bay.
Entertainment and Tourism
The Port Gamble S’Klallam Reservation is known for its stunning wooded vistas and tranquil
picturesque water views. While in Kitsap County, visit the carving center located across from the Tribal
Center on Little Boston Road. The carving center offers for sale traditional art crafted by master
carvers. Whether you need gas, a snack or a refreshing drink, stop in at The Gliding Eagle Market,
conveniently located at the intersection of Hansville Road and Little Boston Road, just two miles north
of Highway 104, west of Kingston.
If you are looking for the best cannabis selection and nationally recognized budtenders, come visit
High Point Cannabis in their brand new retail facility just north of Gliding Eagle. Up the road from the
Gliding Eagle Market and High Point Cannabis is The Point Casino and Hotel. Open 24 hours a day, The
Point is located just 10 minutes from the Kingston ferry or 15 minutes from downtown Poulsbo.
In 2012, the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe purchased Heronswood, a multi-acre botanical garden
located just outside the boundaries of the reservation.
Philanthropy
The Port Gamble S’Klallam Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to improving the quality
of life for tribal members while increasing public understanding of the tribe’s rich cultural
heritage. Recent projects have included the publication of The Strong People, the first comprehensive
written history of the Port Gamble S’Klallam.
In addition, the Foundation has been instrumental in efforts related to the restoration of Heronswood, from managing donations and memberships to organizing volunteer and outreach events. The tribe also donates tens of thousands of dollars a year through its Community Awards program as well as holding an annual fundraising campaign by the Point Casino for a pre-selected charitable partner.
Port Gamble
Port Gamble is set along the scenic shores of Hood Canal and Gamble Bay, a mile east of the Hood Canal
Bridge on Highway 104, or eight miles west of the Kingston Ferry terminal. Port Gamble is a privately
owned National Historic Landmark District and is a jewel on the Kitsap Peninsula.
Gamble Bay was named by surveyor Charles Wilkes in 1841 in honor of Lt. Robert Gamble, who was wounded
in the War of 1812 sea battle between the US Frigate President and the British Frigate Belvidera. Port
Gamble was briefly known in its formative days of 1853 as Teekalet, Native American for
“brightness of the noon-day sun.”
The 120-acre site was founded in 1853 by Puget Mill Company (later named Pope & Talbot) as a home for
mill workers and their families and was one of the premier mill towns in Puget Sound. It was the oldest
continuously operating mill town in North America before it closed in 1995 after 142 years. The company
was acquired by Rayonier Inc. in May 2020.
The town is a popular day trip, wedding destination, and meeting and event venue. It is also a great
destination for residents of neighboring Jefferson, Mason, Pierce, King and Snohomish counties,
especially during the summer when events (both large and small) take place almost every weekend. Events
include a Ghost Conference, Ghost Walks, Maritime Music Festival,
Historic Walking tours, Summer Faire, many running and biking events, and an old-fashioned Country
Christmas celebration in December, which help the town draw visitors year-round.
The Port Gamble Theater reopened to live stage performances after 60 years. Come see the Port Gamble
Theater Company as they and others perform throughout the year. The theater has been renovated but still
keeps the old-style feel from years ago.
Boutiques offer local and regional fine arts, handcrafted gifts from around the world, a variety of
restaurants serving local beers, wine and desserts, espresso, fiber arts, and weaving, fair traded local
gifts, kayak, mountain bike, and stand-up paddle board rentals, fabric and quilts. The Port Gamble
General Store and Cafe offers visitors a unique and fun experience with a variety of gifts, tasty ice
cream, a delicious cafe and, of course, the feel of an old general store and cafe.
The New England-style town features turn-of-the-century buildings, a historic church, picturesque
grounds, and a historic museum filled with artifacts and replicas from the town’s mill days. Elm
and Maple line the town’s street – painting the area with hues of gold, orange, and red in
the autumn.
