Mayor Welcome

As Mayor, I would like to welcome you to the Town of Kernersville!

ernersville is located along the I-40 corridor in Forsyth and Guilford counties, in the heart of the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina. Our town has a vibrant local economy with nationally and internationally recognized businesses, as well as numerous locally-owned and small businesses.

We are home to the Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center hospital and the Kernersville VA Health Care Center. With active civic clubs, and many strong faith communities to be involved with, there are a variety of ways to be actively engaged.

The Kernersville Chamber of Commerce works with local businesses and the town to organize special community events including the Spring Folly Festival, which has been recognized as one of the best small-town festivals in the Southeast.

The Kernersville Rotary Club organizes a Fourth of July Parade and a local Farmers’ Market.

We have a variety of parks and playgrounds. Kernersville’s Ivey Redmon Park hosts the state-wide high school cross country championships, and also features soccer and softball fields. Our Fourth of July Park is the site of the Honeybee Festival, a festival featuring honey and arts and crafts, which has been a local tradition since 1975.

With a vibrant economy, opportunities to become involved, and a hometown atmosphere, we hope that you’ll find that Kernersville is a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire.

History & Tourism

Kernersville’s rich history is front and center for all to appreciate. The Kernersville Museum, a half block from the intersection of Main and Mountain streets, provides educational displays of local lore and culture. The 1873 railroad depot on North Main Street showcases the appearance of a passenger rail station, complete with a ticket office and waiting areas. In addition, the one-room schoolhouse at Fourth of July Park is an authentic classroom from the 1800s.

Local history can also be unveiled by visiting historic cemeteries at Kernersville Moravian Church and St. Paul’s Cemetery – the pre-Civil War burial place of nonwhites from the community, located behind Cagney’s Restaurant, on South Main Street. You can also experience a glimpse of history in the Heritage Row section of our Spring Folly festival. Heritage Row takes you back to life in the 1880s with exhibits on display on West Mountain Street.

Kernersville was incorporated in 1871, less than a decade after the conclusion of the Civil War. At the time of incorporation, the town had only 147 residents but quickly grew to over 1,000 just two years later. A catalyst in the town’s growth was when residents rolled up their sleeves and built a section of the railroad line through Kernersville, opening up opportunities for commerce and trade. Kernersville has been a logistics center ever since, combining rail, an excellent road network and air freight at nearby PTI airport and a FedEx hub.

Körner’s Folly is the centerpiece of a historic district that contains multiple private homes on the National Register of Historic Places. Körner’s Folly is the architectural wonder and home of artist and designer Jules Gilmer Körner. Built in 1880 in Kernersville, the house originally served to display his interior design portfolio. Visitors can now explore the 22-room house-turned-museum and its unique original furnishings and artwork, cast-plaster details, carved woodwork and elaborate hand-laid tile. Körner and his family are buried across the street at the God’s Acre cemetery, on the grounds of Kernersville Moravian Church. Körner’s Folly recently unveiled the John & Bobbie Wolfe Visitors Center, enhancing the visitor experience with additional educational resources, event space and modern amenities while preserving the historical significance of the estate.

A key attraction to the community is the Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden, a seven-acre oasis in the historic district of downtown Kernersville. Each year additional gardens and features are added. When the botanical garden master plan is complete, it will feature 25 distinctive gardens. Admission is free to observe the various garden areas and fountains on the property. In addition, many weddings and upscale community events are held in the carriage house.

Some people visit Kernersville for its wide sports appeal. The Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex is home to soccer game fields, as well as softball and youth baseball fields. The park is also the site of a cross-country course that brings the top high school and ACC collegiate runners to the community for big meets. Across town, between Cash Elementary and East Forsyth Middle School, is the Bagley Lacrosse Complex, which hosts local and regional lacrosse tournaments.

People also visit Kernersville to show respect at the Carolina Field of Honor, a veteran’s memorial that recognizes military service dating back to the Revolutionary War. It is located at Triad Park, which straddles the Forsyth and Guilford County lines. The park’s features an amphitheater that is used by the Arts Council and other groups for concerts and dramatic productions.

Tourism in Kernersville goes beyond its rich history and architecture—it encompasses a vibrant mix of shopping, dining, and lodging options that cater to both locals and visitors. The town offers a variety of retail shops and boutique stores, with downtown businesses playing an active role in community engagement. Throughout the year, downtown Kernersville hosts an array of events such as seasonal festivals, artisan markets, and family-friendly activities, enhancing the shopping experience and fostering a sense of community. Additionally, Kernersville’s diverse dining scene, ranging from cozy cafés to upscale restaurants, provides plenty of culinary delights for visitors. With convenient hotel accommodations nearby, Kernersville has positioned itself as a welcoming destination for tourism, combining small-town charm with a lively business district.

Recreation

Recreational opportunities are plentiful and expanding in Kernersville. Outdoor additions include the 3.6-mile Kernersville Mountain Bike trail on Smith-Edwards Road and Bagley Lacrosse fields, both of which provide for specialty sports. In recent years the cross-country course at Ivey M. Redmon Athletic Complex has hosted high school state and ACC cross-country meets.

The Ivey M. Redmon Athletic Complex spans 103 acres, only one-third of which is currently developed. It has soccer fields, as well as the town’s own softball leagues. Neighborhood parks include Fourth of July Park, Harmon Park, Civitan Park, Old Kernersville Lake Park and Century Lake Park.

The new Kerner Mill Greenway (also known as the Scott Willis Memorial Trail) is a 1.2-mile paved pathway that winds along Kerner Mill Creek in Kernersville. Unbeknownst to many, it’s part of the larger Piedmont Greenway Master Plan that will eventually consist of 19 miles of connected greenways running through three towns and two cities in both Guilford and Forsyth counties. This Greenway also runs through the Etta Lea & Lawrence Pope Memorial Park, which also has a master plan to make this a central fixture in Kernersville known as Pope Park.

Built on a generous land donation by our local chapter of the Civitan Civic Club, Civitan Park has a great mix of active and passive amenities. In May 2023, the park was redesigned and given a new name to usher in a positive marked change. This park now houses four tennis courts, three pickleball courts, a basketball court, a ball field (softball/baseball), an interactive Yalp Sona Arch, and a challenge course. There is also a trail surrounding the ballfield and two shelters for reservation.

Fourth of July Park includes tennis courts, pickleball courts, basketball courts, picnic shelters, an extensive skate park and the Vivian F. Bennett Dog Park. Both the 13.9-acre Old Kernersville Lake Park and 10-acre Century Lake Park feature shing opportunities on spring-fed lakes.

Declan’s Playground is the area’s largest playground, located at Harmon Park. The town also maintains a 12,000-square-foot recreation center.

Just outside the town limits is the extensive Triad Park, which is a shared effort of Forsyth and Guilford counties. Triad Park includes the veterans’ memorial Carolina Field of Honor, a massive amphitheater, hiking and bicycle trails and a variety of picnic shelters and other amenities.

The most extensive recreational facility in town is the 23-acre Kernersville Family YMCA. The Y facilities include

a gymnasium, group exercise studio, a state-of-the-art fitness center, two indoor and two outdoor pools, athletic fields and indoor and outdoor tracks. The Kernersville Community Pool is located at the YMCA, and is a partnership of the Town of Kernersville and the YMCA. The eight-lane indoor pool is utilized by all the local public and private high schools. The town has access to the outdoor splash park and water slide pool during the warm-weather season. Although the YMCA is a membership facility, financial assistance is available.

Family Life Centers provide a full range of fitness and recreation facilities as well. There is a full array of specialty sports organizations for baseball, lacrosse, football, soccer, indoor soccer, dance, cheerleading, bowling, Senior Olympics, pickleball and martial arts in the community.

This series offers family-friendly events that the entire community is invited to attend. It is recommended to bring a lawn chair or blanket and money to purchase from the food trucks.

The Kernersville Spring Folly is a large event in Kernersville that attracts visitors from all over. This event is the perfect venue for commercial vendors looking to sell, promote and advertise to a wide array of visitors.

JUNE

Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth National Independence Day or Emancipation Day, is an annual celebration in the United States that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. The Town of Kernersville celebrates this with a Festival in Downtown Kernersville at Harmon Park. The community is invited to come and learn more about history and culture while enjoying music, food and vendors.

Kernersville festivities open at 8 a.m. with a 5K run, followed by a red, white and blue parade at 9 a.m. The evening program begins at 5 p.m. and features food trucks, live entertainment starting at 6:30 p.m., and fireworks at 9:15 p.m. Kernersville Fourth of July wraps up by 10 p.m.

Kernersville will celebrate an annual tradition and the state insect during the Kernersville Honeybee Festival in August at Fourth of July Park. The mission of the Honey Bee Festival is to provide a fun and educational event celebrating and promoting the growth of a healthy honey bee and pollinator population.

The Downtown Kernersville Trick-or-Treat is held every year on Halloween night from 6-8 p.m. Trick-or-treaters are invited to put on masks, capes and robes and grab their buckets and bags as we venture along the sidewalks of Downtown Kernersville in search of yummy treats.

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving every year the town is invited to Downtown Kernersville to catch great deals and get a jump start on holiday shopping. With Christmas quickly approaching, it is also time to get your family pictures with Santa and shop Downtown for the perfect Christmas gifts for your loved ones. The event will start in the morning with pictures with Santa and then you can Shop Local with Santa in Downtown Kernersville during that afternoon.

A weekend-long event in Downtown Kernersville the first weekend of December. On Saturday, the town is invited to shop local with Santa to finish up last-minute Christmas shopping. Then finish the night with the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting at 6 p.m. On Sunday afternoon will be the start of our Christmas Parade. Several other businesses in the area will have Christmas events.

Experience the magic of the holiday season like never before with our enchanting Christmas Trolley in the heart of our cozy Downtown Kernersville for Blooms to Bells. Step aboard our trolley and embark on a festive journey through the twinkling streets adorned with shimmering lights and holiday decorations provided by our Brick and Mortars. Create cherished memories with your loved ones as you experience the magic of Christmas in Downtown Kernersville. Let the twinkling lights and festive atmosphere fill your hearts with warmth and cheer.

Between the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Kernersville, there are almost 300 events a year to attend, participate or volunteer. The above events are just the list of our annual events for the community. Additional events include fashion shows, music and movies in the park, bar crawls in downtown, father-daughter and mother-son dances, annual golf tournament, concert series at the botanical gardens, theater productions, car shows, business showcases, town festivals, craft fairs, historical readings and events, senior hobbies and so much more. Shopping & Dining

Kernersville retail and dining offer the best of all worlds. The quaint downtown includes specialty stores, popular restaurants, coffee/smoothie shops and even a bakery. If you prefer shopping at large retail stores, South Main Street features big box office supply, clothing, home improvement, grocery and general discount stores. Multiple family-owned businesses have thrived in our community for many years.

Kernersville offers the full gamut of restaurant options, from all the key national fast-food restaurants to high quality sit-down dining. Many communities have a variety of restaurants but few, if any, can match the heart of Kernersville restaurant owners. Kernersville restaurants participate in several fundraisers for worthwhile charitable causes. Fifteen area restaurants participate each year in the three Eating for Education events, donating a portion of their total sales to the chamber’s education grants.

If you’re in the market for a new car, Kernersville boasts nearly every major auto dealer. We also have a unique setting at The Factory in our North Main Street downtown shopping district. The Factory is a mixed-use facility with retail, restaurants, service, condominium living and even a popular radio station.

Kernersville is your one-stop community for all kinds of shopping and dining. Because of our lighter traffic, the Triad comes to Kernersville for their shopping needs.

Education

Kernersville is doing its part to change the world through education. Residents are blessed with excellent public schools as well as several private school options. Kernersville has five elementary schools, three middle schools and two high schools, serving 9,300 students — nearly a fifth of all students in Forsyth County.

The Kernersville area is home to the North Carolina Leadership Academy, a public charter school for grades K-12. The NCLA offers a comprehensive menu of athletic and after-school programs. Admission to the school is by lottery.

For younger children, Triad Baptist Christian Academy provides a Christian environment for grades K-12, offering junior varsity and varsity sports for students in grades 6-12. Additionally,

Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School, another private educational option in the area, serves students in grades 9-12 with a focus on academic excellence, faith-based education, and competitive athletic programs. Both schools contribute to Kernersville’s strong educational foundation, offering families a range of private schooling options.

Community support for education is very strong in Kernersville. The chamber raises funds each summer through contributions and the popular Eating for Education restaurant promotion. Grants are presented to teachers in the public schools annually, funding the creation of classroom education projects.

Kernersville also benefits from the Grady P. Swisher Center, a satellite campus of Forsyth Technical Community College. Forsyth Tech provides people at every stage of life with a variety of educational pathways to enter today’s workforce, change careers or pursue further education at a four-year university. Health & Wellness

In the past, residents of Kernersville had to travel to nearby cities for many of their healthcare needs, but that gap has since transformed into one of the town’s greatest strengths. Today, Kernersville is home to the state-of-the-art Novant Health Kernersville Medical Center, a full-service hospital that provides comprehensive care to the local community. The facility offers emergency services, advanced surgical procedures, and specialized treatments, ensuring residents have access to top-tier medical care close to home. In addition to the hospital, Kernersville is now equipped with a variety of healthcare providers, including specialty practices in fields such as cardiology, oncology, and orthopedics, making it a hub for quality healthcare in the Triad area. This growth in medical infrastructure has not only improved the overall health and well-being of the community but has also contributed to Kernersville’s appeal as a thriving place to live and work.

There are many intangible benefits of Kernersville’s extensive medical facilities. Emergency services are just a few minutes away for Kernersville residents. Patient visits can now be done on a lunch break, because of the convenience of the hospital.

In addition, Cone Health Med Center Kernersville is a valuable facility, containing an urgent care center plus many specialty practices. It provides a one-stop shop for health-care needs.

Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Health offers imaging, urgent care and orthopedics. Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Health also provides an educational piece with its School of Medicine, just a few miles away.

The Kernersville VA Health Care Center is a four-story regional outpatient clinic to treat those who served our country through the military. Twenty different outpatient medical services are housed in the VA Center.

Assisted living facilities are available throughout our community of Kernersville, offering the best care and amenities possible.
