Welcome to Joliet, which is a regional hub for shopping and dining, transportation and jobs. Here you’ll find affordable homes, high-ranking schools, plenty of green spaces and bike trails, exciting entertainment venues and festivals, and lots of places to shop and dine.

The city is the second largest in the state by land area, and third largest in population with over 150,000 residents. It is the county seat of Will County, and part of the city extends into Kendall County.

One of Joliet’s major strengths is transportation access, with two major interstate highways crossing the area (I-80 and I-55), two commuter train lines that travel to and from Chicago several times every day, and Amtrak service that goes throughout Illinois and as far as Texas. The city also has a new bus station at the Joliet Gateway Center transportation campus that helps commuters connect to local businesses.

Joliet, which was settled in 1833, has a celebrated past that includes recognition as “The City of Steel and Stone” because of its limestone quarries and steel plants. Manufacturing also played a foundational role in the city, where a variety of products were made and shipped around the country. The city’s history is celebrated at the Joliet Area History Museum, Route 66 Welcome Center, Jacob Henry Mansion and Old Joliet Prison. Joliet also includes two National Register Historic Districts (Upper Bluffs and East Side) that feature historic architecture.

Activity in Joliet’s historic downtown continues to grow, with events, entertainment, dining, shopping and more year-round. You can catch concerts, plays and other performances at the iconic Rialto Square Theatre and Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park & Theatre.

Also check out the restaurants, bars, and many other local favorites. Spend some time on one of our College campuses. Shopping and restaurant options are also increasing in the Louis Joliet Mall corridor. For entertainment, you can visit Harrah’s Joliet and Hollywood casinos, as well as take in a Joliet Slammers minor league baseball game.

It’s easy to find outdoor options in the area, such as parks, bike trails and forest preserves through the Joliet Park District and the Forest Preserve District of Will County. At the Joliet Iron Works Historic Site, you can enjoy a bike or a hike and learn about the city’s industrial roots.

HEALTH CARE

The Joliet region is served well by two major health care providers that offer a variety of highly rated services, with dedicated medical and support staff and excellent access throughout the area.

Here is information about each:

SAINT JOSEPH MEDICAL CENTER

As the newest member of the Prime Healthcare family of hospitals, Saint Joseph Medical Center will continue to provide high-quality compassionate care with the strength and resources of a nationally recognized, award-winning health system.

Saint Joseph Medical Center is a Joint Commission Accredited 489-bed facility and the leading hospital in the Joliet area, where they offer comprehensive specialty and 24/7 emergency care, complemented by their Level II trauma center. Their expert surgical teams are equipped to handle serious and life-threatening conditions, ensuring that your health needs are prioritized through attentive listening and tailored care. As a premier destination for specialty services, they excel in areas such as cardiology, oncology, stroke care, orthopedics, and women’s health.

Their OB/GYNs and maternity care specialists are dedicated to providing a personalized birthing experience alongside advanced neonatal care for infants in need. With a commitment to innovation, they offer a variety of minimally invasive procedures utilizing robotic-assisted technology, along with extensive imaging and lab testing, all conveniently located on one campus, which also features a dedicated inpatient rehabilitation center.

SILVER CROSS HOSPITAL

Silver Cross Hospital has earned a variety of honors during its 126-year history of serving the Joliet region. In 2021, the hospital – for the first time in its history – achieved a “Triple Crown,” with an A for Patient Safety by the Leapfrog Group, a 5-Star Rating by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and a spot on the Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals list.

Few hospitals across the country achieved this combined recognition for excellence in patient safety, patient care, patient outcomes and patient experience. Silver Cross is a not-for-profit, independent, non-denominational acute-care hospital in New Lenox, serving the residents of Will County and the southwest suburbs. With more than 4,500 employees, physicians and volunteers, Silver Cross operates a 300-bed acute care hospital and five satellite facilities.

Silver Cross is also home to the Midwest Institute for Robotic Surgery, the largest robotic surgery program in the Chicago area, which provides training for surgeons across the globe. In 2020, Silver Cross opened the Pavilion D, Medical Office Building at 1851 Silver Cross Blvd., on the hospital campus, which is home to Silver Cross Urgent Care, Silver Cross Occupational Health, Silver Cross Medical Group and physician offices. In 2022, the hospital opened Will County’s first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The 24-bed unit will help ensure that babies with special needs receive the care they need without traveling to another hospital.

In 2022, Silver Cross opened Will County’s only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with 24 private, single-family rooms. It is modeled after the NICU at Ann & Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

Silver Cross has partnerships with some
of the top medical organizations and experts in the Chicago area, including
Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago; Shirley Ryan Ability Lab; UChicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Loyola Medicine for neurosciences and stroke care. The hospital also worked with partners to open Silver Oaks Behavioral Hospital, a 100-bed mental health hospital on the New Lenox campus.

Education

Educational instruction is a strength in Joliet, with two city school districts as well as private schools. Here is a look at the districts and a noted private high school:

JOLIET PUBLIC SCHOOLS DISTRICT 86

Joliet Public Schools District 86 provides a strong educational background through its 15 elementary schools, four junior high schools, early childhood center and alternative school.

Families also have a choice to enroll children in one of four district magnet schools, which give students distinctive educational opportunities in academics, socialization and creativity.

Eisenhower Academy (grades 1-5), a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School, and Washington Junior High and Academy (grades 6-8) attract students with average and above academic achievement as well as positive behavior. Forest Park Individual Education (I.E.) School, a 2020 National School of Character that serves K-5, and the I.E. program at Hufford Junior High (grades 6-8) emphasize the development of responsibility, respectfulness, resourcefulness and responsiveness.

Plenty of extracurricular programs are also available, including junior high athletic programs and musical ensembles. Diversity is a strength for the district, which also offers bilingual education.

Students are prepared to meet and exceed district and state benchmarks and will receive a full array of special services support.

JOLIET TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 204

There are two main campuses for Joliet Township High School: Joliet Central High School and Joliet West High School. A Pathways Campus is available for students who require structured support services and a Transition Center serves students with disabilities from ages 18-21 years.

Students at both high school campuses can participate in more than 30 student clubs and 28 athletic opportunities. The Freshman Academy is a small school within the school to help ninth-graders prepare for the high school experience. In their sophomore year, students can join career-themed academies that cover areas such as human services, health, science, the arts and business. The high schools offer partnership programs with local colleges such as Joliet Junior College, the University of St. Francis, and Lewis University.

JOLIET CATHOLIC ACADEMY

Joliet Catholic Academy is a college preparatory high school with an enrollment of about 650 boys and girls, and a history that dates back to 1869. The school has a student-teacher ratio of 13:1, which allows for more individualized instruction and attention.

More than 50% of the faculty has a master’s degree or higher, and more than 30 faculty or staff members are alumni. There are three levels of study for academic subjects – accelerated/ honors, upper college prep and college prep. Students can also take Advanced Placement (AP) classes and earn an honors diploma. The school is also known for its extracurricular activities, with a long track record of success in 24 varsity teams in 16 sports for both boys and girls.

JOLIET JUNIOR COLLEGE

The first public community college in the nation, JJC has five campuses and education centers, serving about 27,000 students each year. There are nine academic pathways, and plenty of transfer options. www.jjc.edu

LEWIS UNIVERSITY

With a 410-acre main campus in nearby Romeoville, Lewis has 6,200 graduate and undergraduate students and is ranked highly for value among private schools. Lewis is one of 60 universities across the globe sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, an international Roman Catholic teaching order.

UNIVERSITY OF ST. FRANCIS

There are about 4,000 students at this Joliet-based school, which offers undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and certificate programs in business, nursing, education, social work and arts and sciences. www.stfrancis.edu/

Recreation

Serving the Joliet area since 1922, the Joliet Park District manages 78 community parks, 15 award winning facilities and more than 1,650 acres. The park district also aims to help the community get fit and active with programs, classes and events.

Its facilities include three golf courses: Inwood, Wedgewood and Woodruff; Inwood Athletic Club; Inwood Ice Arena, Bird Haven Greenhouse; Busey Bank Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium; Joliet Regional Airport; Kathy Green Multi-Purpose Center, Barber and Oberwortmann Horticultural Center; Hartman Recreation Center; Harlow Lockwood Softball Fields; and Nowell Park Recreation Center.

The park district also presents several community events, including the annual June favorite, Taste of Joliet, featuring live concerts, a Kid Zone and food and drinks. The activities kick off in May with

a welcome summer craft and auto show, featuring more than 50 vendors. Proceeds from the event support the Sunshine & Rainbow Learning Center.

Joliet residents get active through numerous sports and athletic programs in aquatics, fitness, golf, ice skating and hockey, cheer, gymnastics and tumbling. Arts and dance programs are also offered.

Other park district offerings include facility rentals, camps and an assortment of educational and wellness classes. Nature-based programs, such as mommy-and-me classes, animal courses, nature walks and nature camps take place at Pilcher Park Nature Center.

Bird Haven Greenhouse and Conservatory showcases stunning gardens year-round and includes a tropical house, cacti room and show house. It sits on 660 acres that encompass Pilcher Park and Higginbotham Woods.
