Established in 1914, the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry was founded to act as the unified voice initiating positive change for the entire community. Aligned with these founding principles, the Chamber’s current mission is to advance the interests of businesses, professionals and service organizations in the Joliet region, serving as their advocate in governmental and social affairs, addressing their needs, and thereby enhancing both the business environment and the local quality of life.

Guided by a board of directors elected by the membership, the Chamber formulates policies for its programs and events. A dedicated professional staff manages the day-to-day administration, while member businesses actively collaborate through volunteer committees to achieve the goals set by the board.

Rooted in a rich past and driven by continued growth, Joliet stands today as a
dynamic community where residents can live, work, explore and thrive.

Joliet’s role in shaping Illinois is reflected in the nicknames it has earned over time. First known as
the “City of Stone” for its extensive limestone quarries, the city later became the “City of Steel” following the construction of a steel mill in 1869. These industries drew workers, entrepreneurs and investment, laying the foundation for long-term economic growth. Joliet’s strategic position as a transportation hub—through the Illinois & Michigan Canal, railroads and major interstates—further cemented its importance, a legacy that continues today with the expansion of logistics centers and warehouses.

That growth has transformed Joliet into the third-largest city in Illinois, with a population of more than 150,000—double its size in 1990. Today, local businesses employ more than 70,000 people, underscoring Joliet’s role as a regional economic engine and a place many proudly call home.

Beyond its workforce and infrastructure, Joliet offers a wide range of attractions and amenities. The city features more than 20 hotels, over 100 restaurants, two casinos, an independent league baseball team, a historic theatre and premier auto racing facilities. CITY SHAPED BY RESILIENCE, CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND NATIONAL SERVICE

Joliet’s story is deeply rooted in a rich and diverse past, one shaped by industry, immigration and service. Throughout the city, historic sites and cultural institutions honor the people and events that helped define Joliet’s role in Illinois history and left a lasting legacy.

Few landmarks are as instantly recognizable as the Old Joliet Prison. Known to pop-culture fans as the incarceration site of “Joliet Jake” in The Blues Brothers, the prison has also appeared in numerous films and television series, including Prison Break, Derailed, Let’s Go to Prison, and Empire. Its distinctive stone walls and Gothic architecture have made it a sought-after filming location for decades.

Construction of the prison began in the mid-19th century, with the first prisoners arriving in 1858. Using locally quarried Joliet limestone, inmates helped build a larger facility around themselves. Even after Statesville Penitentiary opened nearby in 1926, the prison remained in operation until 2002, when it closed due to budget constraints.

Today, the Old Joliet Prison is a major tourism destination. Preservation efforts are led through a public-private partnership between the Joliet Area Historical Museum, community stakeholders and the City of Joliet. These groups work together to protect the site and thoughtfully share its complex history. In November 2023, the prison’s significance was formally recognized when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a National Register Historic District.

Joliet’s cultural fabric has been shaped by generations of immigrants, including a strong Slovenian community whose contributions are celebrated at the Slovenian Heritage Museum. The museum highlights the experiences of immigrants who came to Joliet to work in local factories while preserving their language, traditions and customs.

Central to this story is the Slovenian Union of America, which celebrated its 95th anniversary this past summer. Founded in Chicago in 1926 as the Slovenian Women’s Union of America, the organization supported immigrant women as they adjusted to life in the United States, helping them pursue citizenship while maintaining ties to their cultural heritage. Its national headquarters relocated to Chicago Street in Joliet in 1976, and the organization became a nonprofit in 2011, adopting its current name and opening membership to both men and women.

The Joliet chapter, known as Branch 20, was the 20th chapter established nationwide and held its first meeting in June 1928. Once the largest and most active branch, it remains an important part of the city’s history. The museum today houses more than 1,000 books—many written in Slovenian—along with artifacts and displays, including mannequins dressed in traditional national costumes.

Joliet’s strategic importance as a transportation hub is highlighted by a monument located next to the Veterans Memorial at Bicentennial Park. The monument honors both the city’s role in supporting the World War II effort and the men and women who served.

Specifically, it recognizes the 28 Gato and Balao-class submarines that passed through Joliet during the war, often under the cover of darkness. Built by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company in Wisconsin, the submarines traveled through the Chicago River and the Sanitary and Ship Canal to Lockport, where they were placed on specially designed floating dry docks. From there, the vessels moved through Joliet and the locks on their journey to the Mississippi River and ultimately the Pacific Theater. Four of those submarines were lost in combat, along with 300 officers and crew members—a sacrifice memorialized at the site.

Together, these landmarks and stories reflect Joliet’s enduring legacy as a city shaped by resilience, cultural diversity and national service.

INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS ALLOW JOLIET TO KEEP PACE WITH GROWTH

Joliet’s rapid pace of business growth and expansion in recent years has placed increased demands on the region’s transportation network. In response, city, regional and state leaders are making significant investments to strengthen infrastructure, improve logistics, and ensure safe, efficient mobility for commuters and businesses alike—whether by car, truck, bus or train.

Our chamber continues to emphasize the importance of modernizing transportation systems to keep pace with job growth and economic development. As new employers bring additional workers and customers to the region, reliable and efficient transportation becomes essential to sustaining continued momentum.

Several major infrastructure projects are already delivering measurable benefits. A recently completed bridge project has improved truck access to and from Joliet’s intermodal center, helping to streamline freight movement. At the same time, the long-term reconstruction of Interstate 80 through Joliet represents one of the most significant transportation investments in the region.

Among the most transformative projects is the Houbolt Road Extension over the Des Plaines River, completed in spring 2023. This 1.5-mile bridge connects directly to Joliet’s industrial corridor and was made possible through a public-private partnership involving CenterPoint Properties, United Bridge Partners, Will County, and the City of Joliet. Designed to relieve congestion on I-80 and I-55, the project includes a new I-80 interchange featuring a converging diamond design.

Looking ahead, work continues on a more than $1 billion project to improve I-80 from Minooka to New Lenox over the next two to three years. Included in this project is a brand new I-80 bridge over the Des Plaines River.

Construction has completed on a new interchange at I-55 and Route 59, which supports access to Cullinan Properties’ mixed-use development with the newly opened Hollywood Casino, apartments and restaurants. This project further enhances regional connectivity.

Transportation improvements are not limited to highways. In downtown Joliet, construction on a new city plaza is wrapping up with plans to open in April 2026, along with street realignments and infrastructure upgrades. Key corridors such as Chicago Street, Ottawa Street, and Joliet Street are being improved to enhance traffic flow, safety and the overall downtown experience.

Public transit remains an important component of Joliet’s transportation strategy. City and business leaders work closely with PACE, the regional bus system, to ensure routes effectively serve major employers. PACE services—including VanGo, ADA Paratransit and Dial-A-Ride—help provide accessible and flexible transportation options throughout the community.

Downtown Joliet’s new bus station complements the city’s robust rail network, which includes the Metra Heritage Corridor Line and the Metra Rock Island District Line. Together, these services connect Joliet with the surrounding suburbs and downtown Chicago, offering convenient commuting options for residents and workers.

Joliet also stands out as a freight and logistics hub. Businesses benefit from strong rail connections via Union Pacific, BNSF, and Canadian National railroads, along with immediate access to major interstate highways. The Des Plaines River further enhances freight capabilities, providing a waterway for transporting goods regionally and across the country.

Air transportation adds another layer of connectivity. In addition to Chicago’s Midway and O’Hare International Airports, Joliet is served by two regional facilities. The Joliet Regional Airport, operated by the Joliet Park District, accommodates private aircraft and features a 2,900-foot runway with 24-hour fuel service. Nearby Lewis University Airport in Romeoville supports aviation education, corporate charters, and business travel.

Together, these multimodal transportation assets position Joliet as a highly accessible, well-connected region prepared to support continued economic growth.

ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT & SPORTS

Rialto Square Theatre

A crown jewel of downtown Joliet, the Rialto Square Theatre first opened its doors in 1926 as a vaudeville movie palace. Today, the opulent venue continues to dazzle audiences with touring bands, Broadway-style productions, dance performances and nationally known comedians. Recognized by the American Institute of Architects as one of the “150 Great Places in Illinois,” the Neo-Baroque theater is as stunning architecturally as it is culturally significant. Located just off historic Route 66, the Rialto is also a premier location for weddings, receptions and special events. Joliet Slammers

For a true taste of classic Americana, catch a Joliet Slammers baseball game in downtown Joliet. The Slammers are members of the professional Frontier League and an official partner of Major League Baseball. Playing from May through September, the team delivers fast-paced, family-friendly action in a beautiful stadium setting. Billie Limacher Bicentennial
Park & Theatre

Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park serves as both a cultural and recreational hub for the community. The indoor theater hosts performances from more than four community theater groups, high school drama programs, and children’s traveling troupes throughout the year. During the summer months, the park comes alive with free Concerts on the Hill, held every Thursday evening at the outdoor bandshell. Autobahn Country Club

Celebrating more than 20 years in Joliet, Autobahn Country Club is a premier motorsports facility featuring a professional road course. Autobahn continues to expand its offerings while creating new opportunities for community engagement. The Kart Circuit Autobahn provides an exhilarating racing experience for drivers of all skill levels. Meanwhile, the Autobahn Driver Academy offers programs such as Autobahn Rush, Sprint, Performance Drive, Teen Driver Safety Training, and Adult Defensive Driving. Each program blends classroom learning with hands-on track time under expert instruction, allowing participants to better understand their vehicles and safely push their limits. Casinos

Joliet is home to two iconic gaming destinations: Harrah’s Joliet and Hollywood Casino Joliet. Both locations feature a wide variety of dining options and entertainment experiences, making them popular destinations for both locals and visitors. Harrah’s offers more than 800 slot machines, over 20 table games and a 39,000-square-foot gaming floor. Hollywood Casino Joliet boasts a newly opened facility with a 50,000-square-foot gaming floor, more than 1,000 slot machines, 40-plus table games, and a state-of-the-art sportsbook highlighted by a massive 42-foot video wall.

Joliet Area Historical Museum
& Route 66 Welcome Center

Step into Joliet’s past at the Joliet Area Historical Museum and Route 66 Welcome Center. Housed in a beautifully preserved former Episcopal Methodist Church on Ottawa Street, the Neoclassical building now features engaging exhibits and themed selfie spots dedicated to Route 66 and the Lincoln Highway. Visitors can explore a replica I&M Canal lock, a turn-of-the-century streetscape, and an Old Joliet Prison guard tower, among many other displays. Old Joliet Prison Tours

One of Joliet’s most recognizable landmarks, the Old Joliet Prison is a legendary link to Hollywood. The former penitentiary appeared in the opening scene of The Blues Brothers and played a prominent role in the first season of Fox’s Prison Break, along with appearances in numerous other films and television shows. After closing in 2002 and reopening to the public in 2018, the prison now attracts visitors from around the world. Joliet Iron Works Historic Site

Today’s peaceful Joliet Iron Works Park was once the location of the second-largest steel mill in the United States. Opened in 1869, the Joliet Iron and Steel Works employed more than 2,000 workers before closing in 1936. Now managed by the Forest Preserve District of Will County, the site has been transformed into a scenic natural area featuring nearly two miles of paved trails and access to the 12-plus-mile I&M Canal Centennial Trail. Interpretive signage guides visitors through the site’s industrial past while highlighting its environmental restoration.

NATURE & OUTDOOR ADVENTURE

Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail

The Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail is one of the region’s most historically significant outdoor spaces. Stretching 79 miles, this former mule trail has become a popular destination for biking, hiking, fishing and seasonal activities such as snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Once a vital transportation corridor connecting Chicago to central Illinois, the canal today offers a scenic escape for
outdoor enthusiasts. Trail maps and access points can be found at

Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie

Recognized as the largest prairie restoration project east of the Mississippi River, the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is also the single largest open space in Illinois. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service and designated as a National Grassland, Midewin is home to expansive prairies, diverse wildlife and free-roaming bison that were reintroduced in 2015. While sightings aren’t guaranteed, each visit offers the possibility of seeing these iconic animals in their natural habitat. Tour schedules and programs are available at fs.usda.gov/midewin.

Pilcher Park Nature Center

Pilcher Park Nature Center provides a convenient and family-friendly way to enjoy the outdoors in Joliet. Spanning more than 640 acres, the park offers scenic trails for hiking, biking and cross-country skiing, along with playgrounds and picnic areas. At the heart of the park is Bird Haven Greenhouse, an Italian Renaissance-style facility featuring seasonal floral displays and year-round attractions, including a tropical house, cactus room and show house. Seasonal ski rentals and abundant wildlife make Pilcher Park a hidden gem for outdoor recreation year-round.

Joliet a Regional leader in shopping, dining and entertainment

Joliet has emerged as a premier destination for both shopping and dining, offering everything from quick retail stops for the perfect gift to full evenings out filled with great food and entertainment.

Anchoring the city’s retail landscape is the vibrant Louis Joliet Mall corridor, one of the region’s most active commercial hubs. Its expansive reach draws shoppers from miles away, making Joliet a go-to destination for surrounding communities. Strong consumer demand is reflected in consistently high sales tax numbers, underscoring the corridor’s continued vitality and economic strength.

The Louis Joliet Mall, anchored by JC Penney and Macy’s, is home to a wide range of popular retailers, including longtime favorites such as Bath & Body Works, Pandora, Foot Locker, and Savvi. Dining options within the mall include familiar food-court staples. Entertainment is also a highlight, with a 14-screen all-digital Cinemark Movie Theatre featuring Luxury Loungers seating.

Recent additions near the mall have further elevated the corridor’s appeal. Highly anticipated openings include Chick-fil-A and Raising Cane’s, along with a new Starbucks location. Nearby, a strong lineup of national restaurants—such as Texas Roadhouse, Hooters, Applebee’s, and Red Lobster—adds to the area’s dining variety.

Just beyond the mall, The Boulevard, a major development spanning Joliet and Plainfield, has generated significant excitement with the opening of a new Costco and Olive Garden. The development continues to attract investment, including the recent arrival of Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant as a much-anticipated dining option. A number of additional developments will soon be named.

Joliet’s entertainment scene is further enhanced by Harrah’s Joliet Casino and Hollywood Casino Joliet, both of which offer multiple restaurants and lounges. Fine dining are standouts at each property, with The Reserve Steakhouse at Harrah’s and Sorellina by Giada at Hollywood Casino ranking among the city’s top dining experiences.

Meanwhile, downtown Joliet continues to gain momentum as a dining, shopping and cultural destination. Joliet Public Schools District 86

Joliet Public Schools District 86 provides many opportunities for students to learn. In addition to core academics, the district provides early childhood instruction, bilingual services, gifted education, a comprehensive special education program, and extracurricular activities including academics, athletics and fine arts.

The district also offers two award-winning magnet programs. Eisenhower Academy was named a 2016 and 2022 National Blue Ribbon School and Forest Park I.E. School received a 2018 Illinois State School of Character and a 2020 National School of Character awards. In all, the district has 15 elementary schools, four junior high schools and one early childhood center.

A Roman Catholic college preparatory co-educational high school co-sponsored by the Joliet Franciscan Sisters and the Carmelites of the Most Pure Heart of Mary, Joliet Catholic offers a challenging curriculum that prepares students for continued education and life. With more than 600 students, each student is placed in classes through a three-tier system to best fit their needs: accelerated program/honors, upper college prep, or college prep. University of St. Francis

With nearly 4,000 students between its three Joliet campuses and its campus in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the University of St. Francis offers 50 undergraduate majors, 47 undergraduate minors, 18 graduate programs and one doctoral program. Joliet Junior College

As the nation’s first public community college, Joliet Junior College (JJC) serves approximately 27,000 students across six campuses and education centers. Silver Cross Hospital

Opened on Thanksgiving Day in 1895, Silver Cross Hospital has been dedicated to providing quality compassionate health care to generations of local families. Founded by the Will County Union of King’s Daughters and Sons, it opened the doors with a 33-bed hospital in Joliet. The founders named it Silver Cross, after their emblem – the Maltese cross.

Over the years, Silver Cross has grown in both size and stature. Today, it has more than 2,900 employees, physicians and volunteers. The 348-bed hospital opened in 2012 and is part of a 129-acre New Lenox campus that includes several medical buildings with physician offices and outpatient services, the Carolyn J. Czerkies Pavilion – home to UChicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center at Silver Cross, an ambulatory surgery center, Silver Oaks Behavioral Hospital, a 110-bed mental health hospital, and the new Midwest Institute for Heart at Silver Cross Hospital.

Silver Cross is also home to the Midwest Institute for Robotic Surgery, the largest robotic surgery program in the Chicago area where surgeons from around the world come to train.

Silver Cross prides itself on delivering unrivaled care to every patient. VNA Health Care Joliet

VNA Health Care offers a fairly new 14,000-square-foot facility including 26 exam rooms, two rooms for mental and behavioral health treatment, a nursing station, an on-site laboratory, a kitchen, and a drive-through pharmacy, which are meant to make full-service health care more accessible for patients. The center also offers parenting and nutrition classes, and the clinic’s Benefits Assistance program can help people who are eligible to sign up for Medicare or for marketplace insurance plans.

Services provided by the staff regularly include family medicine, OB/GYN services, pediatrics, psychiatry, case management, and podiatry, which has been added as a focus to treat the high number of diabetic patients in the VNA system. The Joliet center is VNA’s 16th facility.

Senior Health Care Resources

For over 50 years, Senior Services of Will County has been connecting resources, information, services and programs with those 60 and above to help them be safe, healthy and independent.

Senior Services of Will County provides case management, simple home maintenance, health screenings, transportation assistance and education about life empowering issues. They conduct programs for social interaction to lessen isolation, fitness classes to reduce the risk of falling and other programs that enhance their overall wellbeing.

In 2024, their new Ovation Center opened in Romeoville. The center located in the former Target, at 349 S. Weber Road includes on-site medical screenings and other health care services, physical therapy, behavioral therapy, a café, a walking track, a ballroom, clubrooms and classrooms.

Assisted living, skilled nursing, rehabilitation and memory care centers are also available in the Joliet area.

Immediate Care

Residents of Joliet have several options for care if they are feeling ill or have a minor injury. Many local immediate care facilities serve walk-in patients on a first-come, first-served based on availability or with a same-day appointment.

Mental Health

The City of Joliet provides counseling and psychiatry services through Thriveworks Joliet. The program began following an uptick in the amount of 911 calls that had a mental health component. Joliet residents can use their insurance or Medicaid to pay for mental health care. Financial assistance is provided by the City of Joliet for any uncovered care or for residents without insurance.

As the third largest city in Illinois, Joliet is governed by a nine-member City Council which includes a mayor, five council members elected by Districts, and three at-large members.

Both the mayor and council members serve four-year terms. In addition, 823 full-time and 66 part-time employees provide services to the community through departments that include Community Development, Public Utilities, Public Works and public safety through the Joliet Fire Department and Joliet Police Department. The City Clerk operates as the municipal public information resource center serving the entire community, including residents and all municipal departments.

In addition, the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, the Committee on Citizens with Disabilities, the Firemen’s Pension Fund Board of Trustees, Historic Preservation Commission, the Joliet Arts Commission, the Joliet Housing Authority, the Joliet Regional Port District, the Library Board, the Plan Commission, the Police Pension Board, the Tree Advisory Board, the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, the Will County Public Building Commission, and the Zoning Board of Appeals are active in Joliet and composed of City leaders and residents.

A Year in review 2025 highlights

In 2025, the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry advanced its mission through a dynamic lineup of events, programs, and initiatives that supported member engagement, business growth, and regional development.

A Strong Start

The year opened with a Member Luncheon focused on Will County housing, followed by the first Business After Hours event. February also featured the Annual Awards Dinner, celebrating standout businesses and leaders, including the Cemeno Family, Deb Condotti of Easter Seals, Joliet Park District, Joliet Electric Motors, and Internode Greenery & Home. Additional category winners represented retail, finance, social services, and education.

Leadership, Education
& Advocacy

March highlighted collaboration and community leadership. A Women’s History Month panel brought together influential regional leaders, while the Great Teachers Banquet honored 25 educators. The Chamber also graduated 31 participants from its Community Leadership School program. Advocacy efforts included a City Council candidate forum, giving members direct access to local leadership.

Spring Momentum

Spring programming included educational events at Lewis University, networking at the Illinois Rock & Roll Museum, and a spotlight on the future of Hollywood Casino Joliet. The Chamber and its Foundation also awarded nearly 40 local students $1,000 scholarships to support future education. In May, nearly 400 attendees gathered for the State of the City Address, followed by a legislative forum in June.

Summer Engagement

Summer brought milestone celebrations, including Double J Sports Bar’s 25th anniversary and the Chamber’s Annual Golf Outing with 140+ participants. The Chamber welcomed new educators to the region and hosted the final New Orleans North Music Festival. Member programming continued with a focus on cybersecurity and healthcare insights.

In the fall, the Chamber hosted key events including the ATHENA Award celebration honoring Dr. Karla Guseman and a Legislative Lunch with Illinois Deputy Governor Andy Manar. The State of the County Address and multiple Business After Hours events further strengthened connections. November’s Visionary Series featured a discussion on the evolving media landscape with NBCUniversal Chicago leadership.

Closing the Year

December’s Martinis, Mistletoe & More fundraiser supported scholarships for women advancing their careers. Throughout the year, the Chamber hosted 20+ ribbon cuttings, facilitated weekly referral group meetings, and supported active committees and networking groups, including Young Professionals and the Council for Working Women.
