HISTORY

In 1862, the area located east of Lake Washington along Interstate-90 that would eventually become Issaquah was known as Squak valley – an Anglicized pronunciation of the American Indian name Is-qu-ah or Isquoh. The name was interpreted by some to mean snake, by others “little stream,” and yet others, the sound of the northern crane, a bird common to the valley. For centuries, Squak Valley was home to American Indians, including the Snoqualmie and Sammamish tribes, before the arrival of the first non-indigenous homesteaders in the 1860s.

Although the first documented mention of the name Squak appeared in 1869 election records, the town was platted as Englewood (a modification of the name of resident Ingebright Wold, who settled there in 1867) and officially was incorporated on April 29, 1892 under the name Gilman - chosen in honor of Daniel Hunt Gilman, who had established the nearby Seattle Coal and Iron Co. coal mines. Gilman was also one of the backers of the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railroad, which brought much business to the flourishing community.

Through the years and various monikers, the popularity for the name Squak remained and on Feb. 2, 1899, the town’s name was changed to Issaquah – a closer approximation of the original American Indian name.

Initially a small mining and hops-growing town, the city transformed both in its appearance and economic focus through the years. With the arrival of the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railroad in 1888 came a boom of productivity through coal mines, logging operations and local businesses. Through the years, the economy became more diversified. By 1937, the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery was opened at the western end of town, thanks to a federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) venture that aimed to restore the historic salmon runs that had been destroyed by logging, coal mining and other activities in the Issaquah Creek Basin. By 1970, the population was booming, real estate was a favorable prospect and residents saw an increase in gravel mining, needed in the construction of homes and roads. Growth continued in subsequent years, seen in the arrival of new shopping centers, restaurants, and other businesses.

Later years saw corporations such as Boeing and Microsoft establish operations and in more recent years, Costco and REI, establish headquarters in Issaquah.

Issaquah, Washington Neighborhoods

Issaquah Highlands

Known simply as “The Highlands,” this neighborhood is by far the most popular place for buyers seeking homes in the Issaquah area. The Highlands offers a broad range of home prices, from affordable Highlands condos to high-end luxury estates. 2014-2016 has seen a major increase in new construction by Pulte, Polygon Homes and a luxury development by Toll Brothers.

Mirrormont

Developed over a span of 40 years, Mirrormont is a unique community located on the southern slopes of Tiger Mountain and offers larger home sites, typically between .75 - 1.5 acres. Most homes are situated on larger and heavily wooded lots, and many have views to the south or southwest over the valley.

Montreux

The neighborhood of Montreux is ideally located just to the west of central Issaquah and south of I-90, on the northeast end of Cougar Mountain, and is subdivided into The Lakes, The Rim, and The Village at Montreux. The 260 acre community has approximately 250 homes, many with views of Lake Sammamish and the Cascade Mountains.

Providence Point

Providence Point in Issaquah is a gated 55+ retirement condo community with 24-hour security. The development is located just to the north of central Issaquah and borders Sammamish, giving residents easy access to the best of both communities for shopping and activities. Buyers can choose from multi-story condo buildings, to semi-detached townhome style units which offer private garages.

Squak Mountain

The Squak Mountain neighborhood in Issaquah is located in a heavily forested area of southwest Issaquah. Approximately 1,800 homes have been built in the neighborhood’s more than 40-year history.

Talus

The Talus neighborhood is a planned development located just to the southwest of downtown Issaquah, with a total of approximately 630 acres and includes several parks, open spaces and walking trails. Presently approximately 1,200 homes, townhomes and condos are spread throughout nine subdivisions within Talus.

The Issaquah real estate market is among the most competitive in the Seattle metro area.

Issaquah’s Economic Growth, Development and Forecast

Located approximately 17 miles east of downtown Seattle and eight miles from Bellevue and Redmond, Issaquah was once a small coal mining and hops-growing town that has expanded into a thriving modern city.

The community has grown to a current population exceeding 30,000, with continued plans for positive growth. The city is home to a number of innovative industries and businesses and nationally renowned companies such as Costco and REI, have made Issaquah their headquarters.

Issaquah’s first ever strategic plan, Our Issaquah, was developed from March 2018 to May 2019 as a way to focus on “Who We Are, Where We Want to Go, and How We Will Get There.”

The city of Issaquah’s first Citywide Performance Dashboard showcases the available current and historical data on the city’s citywide performance measures. As a result of various measures taken, 190 businesses were supported with grants, a Green Issaquah volunteer program was launched, $1 million was invested in pavement repair and much more (see “Our Accomplishments” in chart).

EDUCATION

Providing Opportunities to Inspire Students:
A Look at the Issaquah Schools Foundation

For 35 years, the Issaquah Schools Foundation has been making a difference in the lives of students and educators in the cities of Issaquah, Sammamish, Newcastle, Bellevue, and Renton, Wash. The 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, which began in 1987, has contributed more than $13 million to support educational opportunities in the community, funding programs for 26 schools and 20,000 students in the district.

“The Issaquah Schools Foundation drives resources district-wide to help students reach the promise of their potential,” explains Issaquah Schools Foundation Executive Director, Cornell Atwater. “We strive to be the unifying organization that enables the Issaquah School District to provide access to exceptional opportunities district-wide that ignite learning, improve educational outcomes, and prepare all students to be confident, competent, and engaged citizens.”

Programs of the foundation include everything from academic support and funding for fine arts programs, and STEM/robotics clubs, to more essential needs, such as food support and backpacks. The foundation, which offers grants for teachers and scholarships to students, aims to target equitable access to community resources and access to mental health and social emotional support.

For the past 12 years, the foundation has also partnered with the Issaquah Chamber of Commerce, Issaquah School District, Port of Seattle, and other educational partners to offer the Great Careers Conference and Expo. “This opportunity allowed high school students to gain experience and build confidence in networking and learning more about post-secondary options to seeking alternative pathways to a four-year college degree,” Atwater shares. “This included trade, vocational, and industry specific pathways.”

Because of its successful endeavors through the years, Mary Lou Pauly, Mayor of the City of Issaquah, proclaimed May 2022 to be Issaquah Schools Foundation Month. The proclamation declared Issaquah Schools Foundation as “a pivotal part of the educational fabric of our community – helping students to build academic foundations, explore limitless opportunities, and launch successfully into the future.

“With new families coming into our schools and the changing demographics, we must now seize every opportunity to inform, educate, and build awareness about the foundation and its critical role in supporting a child’s educational journey,” Atwater says. “We help to promote student success as a compliment to the district by helping to build a foundation for great schools and great communities. We continue to focus on kids first!”

Walking Tour of Issaquah’s Living History

The starting point for this leisurely stroll through 20 sites is the Visitor Information Center/Alexander House, 155 NW Gilman Blvd. There, you can pick up the brochure to take you through the historical highlights. The Visitor Information Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m/ weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekends. It is closed on holidays and some holiday weekends.

Tripple XXX Rootbeer Drive In

Don’t miss Sunday car shows and music (at most shows) at the last historical Triple X Rootbeer Drive-in in the USA! Triple X and the car shows have been featured with Auto News, CNN, Evening Magazine, Food Channel, Travel Network, Drive Magazine, CruZin’ Magazine, Vintage Vehicle Show and My Classic Car Show. At this home of the messy juicy burger, enjoy great food, fun and entertainment for the entire family!

Gilman Town Hall Museum & Jail

This public hall which was built in 1888, was purchased by the town of Gilman in 1898 to be used as a town hall. Today it is owned by the city and leased to the Historical Society for use as a museum. Next door is an old city jail built in 1914. Exhibits change often and feature many treasures of Issaquah’s past, both near and distant. 165 SE Andrews St. 425 392-3500 Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Train Depot

This depot, which was completed in 1889, was originally on the Seattle Lake Shore and Eastern line that ran from Seattle to Woodinville, south through Redmond, and east to North Bend. It was closed in 1958 and purchased by the city in 1984. 50 Rainier Blvd N, Museum is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Salmon Hatchery

Constructed in 1936, the salmon hatchery was a Federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) venture to restore the historic salmon runs. Today the hatchery raises mainly Chinook and Coho salmon. There are outdoor exhibits where visitors can learn about the salmon life cycle. There are viewing windows and ladders for guests to enjoy. Located at 125 W Sunset Way, 425 392-1118.

Gilman Village

Started in 1972, this collection of unwanted buildings was transformed into a wonderful walking destination that is beautiful, educational, and inspirational. The village consists of buildings in Issaquah which were moved, renovated, and combined into an attractive park-like retail setting. There are 40-plus shops and restaurants. 317 NW Gilman Blvd.

Pickering Barn

The barn was built in the 1800’s and was originally owned by the Territorial Governor, William Pickering. Today, owned and restored by the city, the hay barn and adjoining dairy barn are the only remaining structures of the original 410 acre farm. There is a “Community Teaching Garden.” 1730 10th Ave. NW, call for hours, 425/837-3321. The garden is open daily during daylight hours.

Boehm’s Candies and Chocolates

Boehm’s Candies chocolate factory, known world-wide for its award-winning confections, has attracted thousands of visitors annually to Issaquah since 1956. The manicured grounds are graced with fountains, a replica of a 12th-century alpine chapel near Saint Moritz Switzerland, and the Edelweiss Swiss-style chalet which was the home of founder Julius Boehm. Escorted tours are available by appointment. There is a store, an outside walking tour of the candy kitchen and beautiful grounds. Cougar Mountain Zoological Park

Established in 1972, the primary focus of the zoo is on endangered and unique species, education and extending warm hospitality to their visitors. During December the Issaquah Reindeer Festival is held, enchanting children and adults alike. 19525 SE 54th St, 425/391-5508. Village Theatre

Based in Issaquah, Wash., with operations in Everett, Village Theatre is a leading producer of musical theater in the Pacific Northwest. Producing entertaining, quality productions since 1979, Village Theatre has grown into one of the region’s best-attended professional theaters, with over 20,000 subscribers. Issaquah is surrounded by 200 miles of hiking trails. Within minutes of downtown, hikers can leave behind urban stress for forest adventures on Cougar Mountain, Squak Mountain and Tiger Mountain.

On summer weekends, paragliders be seen launching themselves from Poo Poo Point into the atmosphere.

Located at the west end of Tiger Mountain, the point got its name from logging signals using a whistle that made a “poo poo” sound. The trailhead from the hang glider area is the steeper of two routes to Poo Poo point. The trail climbs steeply and steadily all the way to the top where you’ll find panoramic views of Squawk Mountain, Issaquah, and Lake Sammamish. There is also a clearing on the back side of the point with an amazing view of Mount Rainier.

Swimmers, boaters, anglers and picnickers enjoy nearby Lake Sammamish State Park. The Park is a 512-acre day-use park with 6,858-feet of spectacular waterfront on Lake Sammamish. The area around the lake was an important culture zone for local Native American tribes for centuries. This beautiful park provides deciduous forest and wetland vegetation for the enjoyment of visitors. A salmon-bearing creek flows alongside a raised all-access boardwalk. This natural setting supports a great blue heron rookery. Bald eagles and many other bird species make it a bird-watchers’ paradise. Opt for a one-day fee ($10 per vehicle), or a Discover Pass ($30 annual pass)

In addition to the magnificent hiking in our Issaquah Alps, there are many trails around the city, including the seasonal Edible Landscape Tour along Gilman Blvd. The trail is lined with sculptures and works of art and is not only a wonderful, easy walk, it is beautiful, educational and inspirational.

Sports enthusiasts can also enjoy participating in a number of sports in the region, including cycling, hiking, golfing, volley ball, soccer, baseball, adult and youth basketball leagues, triathlons and more. Arena Sports Issaquah offers indoor and outdoor adult and youth soccer leagues and in the fall, a plan is in the works to offer a new family entertainment center featuring laser tag, arcade games, escape rooms and an inflatable “FunZone.” At Mini Mountain, located approximately 16 minutes by car in nearby Bellevue, Wash., one can opt for year round ski classes, summer rock climbing, outdoor adventure camps and indoor summer ski camps. Snow classes start in January. In the winter months, Issaquah Ski and Snowboard School also offers snowsports experiences for students from all over the Greater Eastside Seattle area.

Many visitors to Issaquah also enjoy sightseeing and outdoor fun at the Snoqualmie Pass - a picturesque mountain pass renown for landmarks, waterways, roads, and trails, as well as the site of the Summit at Snoqualmie, a group of alpine ski areas. Here, visitors can enjoy first class lodging and restaurants, cafés and bars, as well as mountain biking, hiking and seasonal snow play, skiing and snow boarding. Optimal hiking times are from July through October.

Issaquah is home to an array of shopping and dining experiences. Whether strolling through Historic Gilman Village, exploring Front Street, the Commons, Meadows Shopping Center, East Lake Sammamish Shopping district, the flagship Costco (headquarters are here in Issaquah) or visiting the ultra-modern Issaquah Highlands, visitors and residents will find everything from unique one of a kind gifts shops, fine jewelry, great art, modern retailers, and more.

Issaquah is also the proud home to one of the largest antique malls on the eastside. With 100 dealers and 19,000 square feet of space, Gilman Gallery is much more than an antique mall.  They have assembled an eclectic group of dealers who offer a wide variety of products and services. The booths and dealers constantly bring in new and exciting products for your perusal and enjoyment! Gilman is also pleased to offer event space for meetings, parties and such.

Stop by Boehm’s Candies and Chocolates for European style hand-dipped candies and chocolates. The sweet shop is located inside the Edelweiss Chalet. Satisfy your sweet tooth with truffles, chocolate covered caramels, nut clusters, even chocolate covered licorice. Boehm’s has been part of the Issaquah community for more than 50 years.

Issaquah’s nightlife boasts surprising variety. Stroll through historic downtown Issaquah to visit 5-star restaurants, sip outstanding wine from Washington and the world, and enjoy live music and performances. Enjoy top-rated theater arts in an historic setting in downtown Issaquah as you settle-in for one of the Village Theatre’s amazing performances. In the Issaquah Highlands, you can find many restaurants with great happy hour deals and then catch a movie at the state-of-the-art theater. Meet up with local residents at one of the many town pubs and enjoy great selections of beer and spirits.

Issaquah residents and visitors have multiple options when it comes to healthcare and the community boasts a number of reputable facilities focusing on patient care and wellbeing.

In fact, special attention has been given to sports medicine in the region, with the state of Washington designating Issaquah as the Sports Medicine Innovation Partnership Zone in 2015.

“People are drawn to Issaquah outdoor amenities which includes three mountains, Lake Sammamish, and trailheads to over 200 miles of trails,” says Jen Davis Hayes, Economic Development Manager with the City of Issaquah. “We know that people come to Issaquah for high-quality health care – from routine care to births, surgeries, and rehab services. Combining these two strengths to create a hub for sports medicine was the reason the state has designated Issaquah as a Sports Medicine Innovation Partnership Zone. Our focus on sports medicine not only supports our medical providers and businesses, but also ensures our residents recover quickly to get back to life.”

Healthcare facility possibilities include Overlake Medical Center & Clinics and Swedish Community Hospitals. Another longstanding choice is Virginia Mason Franciscan Health. For more than 100 years, Virginia Mason Medical Center has had a solid presence in the state of Washington, originating in 1920 as a partnership between co-founder James Tate Mason Sr., MD, two associates and five doctors.

Originally a 6-story structure in downtown Seattle, the medical center expanded through time in services and locations served. In 1993, the team moved to their current location and now serves patients throughout East King County - ranging from Issaquah, Sammamish, SnoValley, Maple Valley, Renton, and Bellevue. In 2021, Virginia Mason merged with CHI Franciscan to form Virginia Mason Franciscan Health.

The medical center offers a variety of medical services ranging from adult and pediatric primary care, radiology services, cardiac exams like stress testing, lab services and more.  In 2022, Virginia Mason was recognized by Washington Health Alliance’s Community Checkup as the number one medical group in the state of Washington for providing the highest quality of care.

Amanda Locke, Director of Ambulatory Services for the East King County Region of Virginia Mason shares that Virginia Mason Issaquah is excited to announce they will begin doing eye surgeries onsite at the end of 2022. “We have a robust eye team caring for pediatric and adult patients (ophthalmology, optometry, and optical shop) and being able to offer surgeries onsite is a huge win,” she shares.

“We are also excited to continue to share the news about the expansion of the Virginia Mason Bellevue location. In July 2020, Virginia Mason opened a new same-day surgery center at Bellevue that supports 15 different service lines providing same-day surgeries and procedures. Virginia Mason Issaquah is excited to be a member of the community and support our patients and community in leading healthy, well-balanced lives.”

In the heart of historic downtown Issaquah lies the only urban salmon hatchery in the state of Washington.

Each autumn, the salmon return to spawn, bringing with them more than 200,000 people who gather to celebrate their return during the annual Issaquah Salmon Days Festival, which is always held the first full weekend in October.

Since its creation more than 53 years ago, Salmon Days has grown from a small-town event to the largest two-day festival in the state. It is ranked as one of the top 100 festivals in the nation, receiving awards and accolades from around the world.

The event features over 450 colorful artisan booths, more than 50 foods from around the world, a salmon BBQ, national Dock Dogs competition, several salmon view locations, the Salmon Hatchery, a Field of Fun, chalk art, robotics, a carnival for the kiddos, two live entertainment stages, and two beer and wine gardens.

Art Walks

Walk, stroll, or dance? Do them all with friends and wander downtown Issaquah’s ArtWalk and Music Stroll every second Saturday, May through September, from 5 to 8 p.m. Listen to live music, view visual arts and wander through Olde Town’s charming shops, boutiques and restaurants. The Historically Hip Artisan Market will feature local artists front and center. All the festivities are within a short walk, so come and enjoy the vibrancy and allure of Olde Town Issaquah.

The Car Show is held each year on Father’s Day. Hundreds of classic and vintage car owners from across the state proudly show their vehicles along Front Street in historic downtown Issaquah and Triple XXX Rootbeer Drive-In. This FREE classic car show begins at 8:00 am and runs until 3:00 pm. Motorcycles are also welcome! Downtown businesses are open!

Down Home 4th of July

Celebrate the Independence Day of the United States at 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on the 4th of July.

The Kid ‘n Pets parade commences at 11 am and marches through Olde Town Issaquah. (Want to participate? Group sign ups are below.) This year’s parade will feature a patriotic costume contest and participants will throw candy into the crowd! Led by the VFW Post #3436 Color Guard, the parade takes a left turn to the family friendly activity center at Veterans Park Memorial Field. There is plenty to do for the whole family including: listening to live music, tasting food favorites, making arts and crafts, and visiting the various activity booths.

Parkadilly

Visit the biggest kids’ concert and fair on the Eastside! This is held every summer at Lake Sammamish State Park.

Kids will enjoy the petting zoo with rabbits, goats, llamas and more. Seattle Fly Dogs will also be at Parkadilly demonstrating exciting tricks and impressive agility.

Outdoor activities will include arts and crafts, complimentary face painting and games galore. More than 45 kid-centric vendors will also be on-site alongside assorted food trucks to cater to all picnickers’ taste buds.
