Buchanan

A TIME OF REINVENTION

Buchanan is a village located within the Town of Cortlandt. It is situated in the northwestern corner of Westchester County and the eastern bank of the beautiful Hudson River. Historically, the village was originally named East Haverstraw, then Centerville and, finally, Buchanan after its first postmaster, George Buchanan. Approximately 2,100 residents live within Buchanan’s one-and-one half square mile area. It is governed by a mayor and four members of the village board, each of whom serve a two-year term. And, although Buchanan is one of the area’s smallest villages, it takes great pride in having its own police and fire departments.

Buchanan special civic services include the following:

POLICE

The Buchanan Police Department is headquartered in Village Hall at 236 Tate Avenue. It is headed by Chief Shane Farrell and is comprised of one sergeant, one detective and four patrolmen (www.villageofbuchanan.org).

FIRE & AMBULANCE

The Village of Buchanan is protected by the all-volunteer Buchanan Engine Company No. 1 located on Albany Post Road. Buchanan Engine is an independent corporation, and the village contracts with the department for services. Established in 1940, the department has dozens of active members and is led by Chief Andrew Roush (www.buchananfd.org).

LIBRARIES

Residents of Buchanan are primarily served by the Hendrick Hudson Free Library on Kings Ferry Road in nearby Montrose. It is open Monday through Saturday, and also on Sundays during the school year. Two other libraries are nearby

(www.henhudfreelibrary.org).

EDUCATION

Students residing in Buchanan attend classes in the Hendrick Hudson School District located in Montrose (www.henhudschools.org).

RECREATION

Buchanan’s Recreation Department offers a summer day camp for children as well as a number of activities and services for senior citizens. A village pool is located on Westchester Avenue. Pool passes are required. Fees apply for residents and non-residents, while seniors are afforded a special discount (Senior Citizen Club Members receive free access). In addition, Buchanan is also served by the Town of Cortlandt’s Recreation Department. Popular recreational areas in Buchanan include Lent’s Cove and Veterans Pavilion. The beautiful Village of Buchanan is in the process of reinventing itself after the closure of the Indian Point Energy Center, which is currently being decommissioned. The village was the host community of nuclear power plants since 1962 and was known as the smallest municipality with a Nuclear Power Plant in the world.

Currently, there are plans for several residential developments on the Route 9A corridor. The Board continues to work with the current owner of the Indian Point property, Holtec, for the release of 60 acres in the north for development.

Not only does the Village of Buchanan provide excellent services to the residents, such as their own Highway and Police Department, but there are also plenty of recreational events.

Our Buchanan Day is held in the fall. It’s a great event that has the community come together to celebrate our Village. It’s a true community day where the police department gives out ice cream, and Buchanan Engine Company #1 cooks up the hamburgers and hot dogs. There is entertainment and local vendors. New this year to Buchanan Day was the Buchanan Running Club’s first 5k race, which was a huge success.

The Village holds many events under the Pavilion on Westchester Avenue. We are fortunate to have it so that events can be held rain or shine. It is also available to residents and non-residents for private use.

Other community events are the Annual Easter Egg Scramble in the spring and the Halloween Parade in the fall. There is also an annual Christmas Tree lighting held at the Village Circle to celebrate the holidays and the annual St. Patricks’ Day Parade that everyone looks forward to every year.

Buchanan’s ball field and tennis courts are located on Westchester Avenue. Tropiano Trail, located in the Lent’s Cove Park, allows residents and visitors scenic walking paths along the Hudson.

There is an active Beautification Committee that plants and decorates our Village Circle. They have different fundraising events throughout the year that the community supports. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated group of volunteers.

For the village’s senior citizens, there is a Senior Club, which meets weekly at Village Hall. The Club provides a variety of activities and trips designed especially for that age group. During the summer months, the village offers a day camp for children (resident and non-resident), and a village pool (also for resident and non-residents with seniors afforded special discounts). But whether you are a resident, employee or visitor, the Village of Buchanan wishes to welcome you and thank you for being part of our friendly community.

COMMUNITY PROFILES / TOWN OF CORTLANDT

Cortlandt

Where Life Works

T he Town of Cortlandt is a little complicated to explain to out-of-towners but a little history goes a long way in understanding its presence in the county of Westchester, its many and varied communities, and its continuous growth and development throughout the years. So, for starters: In 1677, the Town of Cortlandt derived its name from the Van Cortlandts, one of the most influential families in the region. The family soon began purchasing land (86,000 acres in all) that extended north from the Croton River to Anthony’s Nose located in what is now Bear Mountain State Park, and east from the Hudson River to what is now the State of Connecticut. At the time of incorporation in1788, the Town of Cortlandt was established and included Peekskill as a village. In the 1800s, Cortlandt developed rapidly as its large estates were subdivided into smaller parcels, then sold and connected to surrounding areas by highways, trolley lines and train service. By 1940, the Village of Peekskill broke away, changed its status and became an incorporated city.

Located in the northwestern corner of Westchester County, the Town is now bounded on the west by the Hudson River, the north by Putnam County, the east by the Town of Yorktown and on the south by the towns of New Castle and Ossining. Cortlandt also includes two incorporated villages, Croton-on-Hudson and Buchanan, as well as several hamlets including Montrose, Crugers and Verplanck with an estimated 2020 population of over 42,000 residents. For commuters, Metro North’s Hudson Line can be picked up in Peekskill, Cortlandt Manor, or Croton, which is a major transportation hub. From those stations, it provides regularly scheduled train service to points south to New York City or north to Poughkeepsie. Area shopping is plentiful along Route 6 which is anchored by the Cortlandt Town Center, and the new Cortlandt Crossing shopping center, home to a newly renovated ShopRite, HomeSense and other retail and service providers.

Cortlandt is also home to the New York Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital, one of the Town’s largest employers.

Government

The Town of Cortlandt maintains governmental offices at the Cortlandt Town Hall, located on One Heady Street (www.townofcortlandt.com). It has a full-time Supervisor and four council members that meet regularly at Town Hall.

Police, Fire & Ambulance Corp.

The Westchester County Police patrols the town and maintains a satellite office located at Town Hall. They provide uniformed patrol services and a vast array of specialized support services available for emergency responses. The town is also patrolled by New York State Police headquartered at One Memorial Drive in Crugers. Seven volunteer fire departments, four volunteer ambulance corps and the Cortlandt - Peekskill Regional Paramedics organization (ALS) provide emergency services.

Parks & Recreation

Cortlandt residents enjoy dozens of fun-filled and relaxing activities year-round at many different locations throughout the town. Town parks and facilities include Cortlandt Waterfront Park, Charles J. Cook Pool and Waterspray Park, Hudson Highlands Gateway Park, Lake Meahagh, Muriel H. Morabito Community Center/Seniors Center, St. Columbanus Little League Field, Sprout Brook Ball fields and many more. Libraries

Two impressive libraries are located in the Town. One is the award-winning Hendrick Hudson Free Library in Montrose (www.henhudlibrary.org), which boasts a dedicated teen space, community room and an expanded children’s library.Hendrick Hudson Free Library is also a founding member of the Sustainable Libraries Initiative and has received a number of impressive sustainability awards. The second is the Croton Free Library located in Croton-on-Hudson (www.crotonfreelibrary.org). The library’s mission is to encourage the joy of reading, the exploration of ideas and the pursuit of lifelong learning for adults, teens and children. The Library serves as a gathering place and learning center with many dynamic cultural and educational programs, and space for community organizations to meet.

WHERE LIFE WORKS

As Town Supervisor for the Town of Cortlandt, I am continuing to work with our team on a new budget for 2024 that will continue our excellent financial record. We completed our new artificial ice rink in 2023, and are looking forward to creating five new pickleball courts at our Youth Center. Upcoming improvements at Cortlandt Waterfront Park include a new performance stage, a new aviation themed playground and an extension of the walkway along our beautiful waterfront. We are excited to continue to work with our Economic Development Coordinator on new opportunities in our town.

The town continues to prosper economically as we welcome new businesses big and small that have opened in our community. This year we will once again be offering our shop local campaign “Shop and Dine Cortlandt” in partnership with the Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce. We encourage our residents to shop in our local stores and dine in our excellent restaurants.

Other popular family events include our annual summer concert and movie series and Cortlandt Family Fun Day, now in its 17th year, which concludes with a beautiful fireworks display. Our Winter Wonderland will once again be held in early December at our Youth Center. Our weekly newsletter is a great resource for activities and events throughout the Town. COMMUNITY PROFILES / VILLAGE OF CROTON-ON-HUDSON

Croton-on-Hudson

Transportation Hub with Plenty

of Charm, Character & Spirit

Croton-on-Hudson is a 4.8-square-mile village located in Westchester County, New York. With a population of 8,327 as of the 2020 Census, the village is known for its parks and open spaces, sweeping views of the Hudson River, rich history, and thriving artistic community. Croton-on-Hudson’s colonial-era history dates back to the 17th century and archaeological evidence indicates that it was populated by Native American Indians as early as 4950 BC. Notable residents of Croton-on-Hudson include Isadora Duncan, Peter Straus, Gloria Swanson, Upton St. Claire, Alexander Calder, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Joseph Heller, and many others. Officially incorporated in 1898, the village will be celebrating its 125th Anniversary in February 2023.

The village’s Croton-Harmon railroad station serves as an important regional transportation hub, providing express trains to New York City via Metro North, and Amtrak service to several major cities including Albany, Buffalo, Toronto, Montreal, and Chicago. The station is the most heavily used station of all three Metro-North railroad lines with an estimated 2,860 commuters boarding trains during AM peak hour.

The Village of Croton-on-Hudson is a cultural and recreational destination. Its location on both the Hudson and Croton Rivers provides a dramatic landscape with parks and open spaces that offer a wide range of outdoor activities, including hiking, kayaking, and sailing. The village’s business districts are home to many top-rated restaurants and one-of-a-kind shops. From the annual Summerfest to the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, the village is host to a number of exciting events throughout the year (see Festivals & Events).

Government

The Village Board is the local legislative body comprised of the Mayor and four Trustees. The Board sets policy, approves the budget, adopts local laws and appoints the Village Manager to implement policies and supervise administration of local affairs. Each member serves two-year terms in a part-time capacity. Municipal offices are located at the Stanley H. Kellerhouse Municipal Building at 1 Van Wyck Street

Police, Fire & Ambulance

The Croton-on-Hudson Police Department is comprised of 20 sworn officers who, along with civilian staff, serve and protect the community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (www.crotononhudson-ny.gov/police-department) . The Croton Volunteer Fire Department is composed of five fire companies that provide fire suppression, rescue, fire prevention and safety education services to the Village of Croton-on-Hudson and adjoining Mount Airy and Quaker Bridge Fire Protection Districts (www.crotonfd.org). Croton-on-Hudson Emergency Medical Services (Croton EMS) provides Basic Life Support services to the Village of Croton-on-Hudson along with the Mt. Airy and Quaker Bridge Fire Protection Districts in the Town of Cortlandt. Croton EMS operates with two BLS ambulances, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (www.crotonemsinc.org).

Parks & Recreation

The Recreation and Parks Department manages and maintains several parks and recreation facilities for the enjoyment of village residents, including Senasqua Park, Silver Lake Park, Dobbs Park, Duck Pond Park, Sunset Park, Harrison Street Park, Vassallo Park, Black Rock Park, and Echo Canoe Launch. Croton Landing Park and the Hudson RiverWalk along Elliott Way are open to all for their enjoyment. Croton Recreation provides youth, families, adults, and seniors with opportunities for continued learning, social interaction, and enjoyment through a variety of classes, special events, and trips (www.crotononhudson-ny.gov/recreation-parks).

Library

Croton Free Library is part of the Westchester Library System. In addition to 80,000 volumes of books, CDs and DVDs, it has access to wireless internet and regularly scheduled exhibits by local artists, lectures and other special events, (crotonfreelibrary.org)

THE MAYOR

USA Today recently called the Village of Croton-on-Hudson the number one community in New York State, and it still is. That’s a perfect description of our thriving community, nestled in the hills between the Hudson River to the west and the Croton River to the south.

Containing roughly 5 square miles, the Village of Croton-on-Hudson is home to about 8,000 people. We’re a diverse, family-friendly village, ranging from descendants of the Italian stonemasons and Irish laborers who built the nearby New Croton Dam to artists and writers who have been attracted to the area since the early 1900s, when radicals and bohemians settled on Mt. Airy and in Harmon to many who find it an ideal place to live close to New York City.

We’re blessed with two highly-ranked school systems, Croton-Harmon and Hendrick Hudson, an excellent library, and a major train station.

Croton has many strong civic organizations, including a volunteer fire department, Rotary and Lions Clubs, an educational foundation, sports leagues, arts and environmental organizations and groups devoted to preserving and presenting Croton’s rich history.

Our small village is rich in natural beauty. Its rugged topography and location on both the Hudson and Croton Rivers provide a dramatic landscape with parks and open spaces offering a wide range of passive and active outdoor activities. There are nearly 15 miles of walking trails in the village, including the beautiful Croton Landing Park along the Hudson River. There are places to launch boats and put in kayaks and canoes on both the Croton River and the Hudson. In the summer you can swim at Silver Lake and, in the winter, you can ice skate on the Duck Pond.

As we conclude Croton-on-Hudson’s 125th anniversary, our village continues to gain recognition for its continuous improvement. In 2023, Croton-on-Hudson was named the number one clean energy community in New York State by NYSERDA (New York State Research and Development Authority)and received a Planning Commendation from the Westchester Municipal Planning Federation for the Croton Point Avenue Traffic, Pedestrian, and Bicycle Improvement Project.

City of Peekskill

ONWARD & UPWARD

The City of Peekskill is a thriving and vibrant river city that is rich in history and diversity. Located approximately one hour north of New York City, Peekskill is a premier destination in the Hudson Valley region that attracts people from all over due to its abundant natural resources, entertainment, and a community that is filled with art and culture.

The City of Peekskill continues to advance thanks to the efforts of the Mayor and Common Council who work alongside the City Manager and Department Heads in moving the city forward. In recent years, Peekskill has experienced substantial growth, which has been accompanied by significant commercial and residential development projects in the works or already completed. Some of these projects include an affordable housing development at 645 Main Street, the reconstruction of Fleischmann Pier, the renovation of Pugsley Park, upgrades to Depew Park with the SAM Grant, the launch of a commercial kitchen incubator for food entrepreneurs, and continued projects to enhance the city through its Downtown Revitalization Initiative.

Peekskill is truly the place to be! Visit the downtown to support the many local businesses and sample an assortment of dining options at one of its many restaurants. Enjoy concerts and live events at the Paramount Hudson Valley, experience the beauty of the city at the waterfront or its many parks and take advantage of the variety of recreational activities available for all ages. Letter from THE MAYOR

I am honored to have been elected as the Mayor of Peekskill, and I am committed to continuing to move the city forward and building upon the renaissance it is experiencing. Since my time as a council member, Deputy Mayor, and now Mayor, Peekskill has transformed into a premier destination for the Hudson Valley region as well as the county. As our city continues to grow, I am excited about the continued development happening as well as the projects that are underway.

Working alongside our City Manager and members of the Council, we have developed a vision that has developed into an action plan to address the needs of the city.

Some highlights of our plan include:

• Receiving millions of dollars in grants for infrastructure improvements.

• Passing an Affordable Housing Ordinance that requires all new

residential development to have at least 10% of units set aside as

affordable housing.

• Passing a Tree Protection Ordinance and planting trees throughout

the city.

• Beginning the $1 million SAM grant projects for park improvements,

which include tennis court upgrades, creation of pickleball courts,

resurfacing for a multi-sport track and field, basketball court upgrades,

and creation of a mini pitch court.

• Moving our DRI projects forward, which includes revitalizing the

Paramount Theater, transforming the Kiley Center into the Boys and

Girls Club of Northern Westchester, reconstructing Fleischmann

Pier and improving Charles Point as a premier waterfront destination,

streetscape improvements, creation of a Downtown Revitalization

Fund to help small businesses, implementing public Wi-Fi in Lepore

and Pugsley Parks along with low cost internet service for Bohlmann

Towers and Barham Senior Houses, creating a marketing and

branding strategy with wayfinding signage, enhancing Lepore and

Pugsley Parks, creating a downtown civic hub, improving connections

for pedestrians and cyclists, and transforming the downtown with

public art.

• Working with our Police Department to improve community policing

and to implement a Community Complaint Review Board.

• Beginning the construction and improvements to Fort Hill Park.

Our city wouldn’t be thriving today if it wasn’t for the many

partnerships that help enhance our community. Some of these

partnerships include The Field Library for providing programs and

services for our adults and children that inspires lifelong learning, the

Peekskill City School District for continuing to invest in our children,

the Peekskill Business Improvement District for continuing to promote

growth and development of our downtown, and the Hudson Valley

Gateway Chamber of Commerce for opening opportunities for growth,

resources and services.

Peekskill is truly on the move! Shop our wide range of local businesses, enjoy great dining at our variety of restaurants, and explore our downtown, waterfront, and parks for our art scene, live music, recreation, and other forms of entertainment. COMMUNITY PROFILES / TOWN OF PUTNAM VALLEY

Putnam Valley

Town of Lakes

What can the Ice Age and Putnam Valley have in common? Glaciers. Back in the day, as the iconic monoliths melted and retreated, they created various bodies of water, and revealed stone deposits and huge boulders, all making for some interesting terrain. Appropriately, Putnam Valley calls itself the “Town of Lakes.” Ancient Native American tribes settled by these lakes, as did European settlers who followed and made their mark by the late 1600s. Today, the Town of Putnam Valley is characteristically defined as an area of approximately 44 square miles of land and water.

In 1839, the town was originally named the Town of Quincy but for only one year when it was changed to Putnam Valley. Rumor has it that that decision was based on an overall dislike for President John Quincy Adams but has never been substantiated. At any rate, in 1840, the Town of Putnam was duly incorporated and the population grew exponentially.

Putnam Valley now has a thriving population of approximately 12,000 people. It is nestled in the Hudson Highlands and is bounded by the Hudson River to the west, Carmel to the east, the Town of Philipstown to the north, and the City of Peekskill (Westchester County) and other municipalities in Putnam County like Shrub Oak and Mohegan Lake to the south. The center of town is Oregon Corners where a grocery store, bank, post office, law and medical offices, and other small businesses reside.

Government

The town is governed by a supervisor and four members of the board with offices located at Town Hall on Oscawana Lake Road (www.putnamvalley.gov).

Police, Fire & Ambulance

Keeping the peace is the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department located in the Town of Carmel, and the New York State Police located in Mohegan Lake (www.putnamsheriff.com). As for the Putnam Valley Fire Department, it has two firehouses and is located on Canopus Hollow Road and Peekskill Hollow Road (www.putnamvalleyfire.com). For other emergencies, the Town of Putnam Volunteer Valley Ambulance Corps is located on Oscawana Lake Road. Adjacent to Town Hall in a separate building is the Putnam Valley Parks and Recreation Department. Many of the department’s activities are hosted at the Putnam Valley Town Park. Facilities include courts for basketball or handball, a baseball field, tennis courts, volleyball courts, and a roller rink. There is also hiking along revitalized trails. Picnic tables and grills are appropriately available for a lazy-day summer luncheon.

Library

Located on Oscawana Lake Road is the town’s vital Putnam Valley Library, which offers a variety of programs and events for the whole family including Storytime for children, book sales, and spring and fall festivals. For the public’s convenience, onsite computers offer Internet access, word processing, Excel and the Mid-Hudson Library System’s catalog (www.putnamvalleylibrary.org).

The scenic and serene community of Putnam Valley, located in the heart of the Hudson Valley, is just under an hour from midtown Manhattan by car; its peaceful and slower-paced lifestyle is in sharp contrast to the commotion of New York City.

The population of Putnam Valley is approximately 12,000, and the town encompasses many beautiful, scenic lakes, including Clarence Fahenstock State Park, with its renowned miles of hiking and riding trails. The Taconic Outdoor Education Center is nestled in the midst of our community, which serves as an educational facility for school districts, colleges, scout troops, youth groups and clubs, who travel from near and far for this rare and authentic experience. We also have the 950-acre California Hill State Forest, which the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently renovated, creating a system of mixed use trails for mountain biking, hiking and hunting. Our larger parklands are rounded out with the 1,400 Agatha A. Durland Scout Reservation, which is home to forestland, two large lakes, marshes and three smaller ponds. We are also fortunate enough to have the Granite Mountain Preserve in our backyard, which is managed by the Hudson Highlands Land Trust. This beautiful property, spanning 400 acres, provides ample opportunity for hiking its trails, with a brand new parking area located across the street from 500 Peekskill Hollow Road.

The Putnam Valley Day Camp is housed on 161 acres, which features a full gymnasium, swimming pool, theater hall, trails and more. Our unique summer camp provides a boutique experience for our youth over the course of six weeks every summer, and the hope is for future plans to transform it into a much sought after venue for events and celebrations. Our three private lakes in the town, Lake Peekskill, Roaring Brook Lake and Lake Oscawana, all serve as a magnificent backdrop to the placid and calming nature embodied in our community. Many television and cinematic creations have availed of this beauty for remarkable film locations, including HBO and Showtime, with memorable results.

We are in the process of reinvigorating our downtown area of Putnam Valley, with plans in motion for a business district parking area to make it easily accessible for all to frequent the wonderful establishments our business district has to offer, including our post office, bank, pizzeria, bakery, nail salon, hair salon, restaurant, delicatessen, dog groomer and liquor store.

We celebrate Putnam Valley Town Day in September every year, which is an incredible fun-filled day for our families and community members. Festivities include children’s rides, food vendors, craft vendors and not-for-profit groups, with the day concluding with a spectacular fireworks display.

Our very active Parks and Recreation Department sponsors a Summer Concert Series annually and hosts many events, such as an Easter Extravaganza and a Harvest Festival throughout the year. The highlight is often the lighting of the Menorah and Christmas tree in our Town Park, which also features a visit from Santa arriving on a firetruck. The pavilion in our Town Park has a rentable chef’s kitchen, which has lights for the convenience of evening events, with multi-purpose courts for basketball or handball, a ball field, tennis and pickle ball courts, and play areas for children (including an enclosed space for the littles), picnic tables and grills. Many families enjoy the park seasonally and avail of all of the wonderful things that it has to offer.

“The Feast”

The Society of Our Lady of Mt.Carmel in Verplanck, founded by a small group of immigrants from Calabria, Italy, is home to the longest running Italian Festival in the Hudson Valley. For 101 years, the third weekend in July finds 8th Street and Highland Avenue teeming with people from near and far, lining up at “The Feast” for Mt. Carmel’s famous sausage & pepper sandwiches, and watching the skies for the spectacular fireworks extravaganza. Music fills the air and there is dancing in the streets - in 2013 over 300 people joined hands in the street to dance for more than 6 minutes to break the record for World’s Largest Tarantella!

Founded in 1922, and chartered in 1937, these original members of the society sought to improve the welfare of their community through charitable works while honoring and promoting Italian culture and values. Over one hundred years later, members of The Society of Mt.Carmel, many 3rd and 4th generation, along with their Ladies Auxiliary, continue to promote their founders’ mission by supporting civic groups, veterans, area churches, cultural groups, and families in need.

Mt. Carmel Field, complete with its own soft serve ice cream stand, is home to many local little league teams. Through the years, The Mt.Carmel Society has been proud to work together with other charitable organizations to sponsor children’s fairs, holiday events, seasonal celebrations and markets on their sprawling lawn.

The Mt. Carmel hall boasts a beautiful banquet room where Doo Wop Nights, dinner dances, Murder Mystery Parties and seasonal events take place. The hall, which seats 100, is available to rent for weddings, celebrations, meetings, and fundraisers, and features a separate bar and food service area, as well as wrap-around deck for outdoor seating.

The Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce encompasses five unique school districts. Each provides students the opportunity to obtain a high quality education that will prepare them for life.

Each is committed to fostering in the collective 10,000 students a sense of respectfulness, safety, and love for learning through the use of supportive, resource-rich environments that embrace and understand cultural diversity as an imperative tool to strengthening and enriching a school community.

Our districts are consistently rated highly for math and reading proficiency. Our student to teacher ratio is typically in the 10:1-12:1 range. Capital spending, fueled by increased state aid and local property taxes, has grown to update facilities and provide students with up-to-date technology.

With new construction of residential spaces all throughout the community, our student population grew by 2.2% in 2022. The area offers numerous sports, dance, and martial arts opportunities as well as scouting and other clubs to more fully round out our young people, and aid in their wellbeing. Educating the whole child will develop life-long learners who are compassionate, confident, critical thinkers. People thrive when their needs are met and we, here in the Hudson Valley Gateway, strive to help them meet their goals.

Where students become lifelong learners!

There are six schools within the Peekskill district. Uriah is pre-K; Woodside, Oakside and Hillcrest are elementary (Pre-K to 5th grade); the Middle School is for grades 6 to 8; and the High School is for grades 9 to 12. The district has a large student body of nearly 3,500 students, overall, within a city of 24,000 residents. Its Board of Education places a strong focus on educational achievement, a safe environment and stable financial management.

Elementary students are assigned to schools based on grade level, from pre-K to fifth, otherwise known as the Princeton Plan.

Students in grade 6 to 8 are assigned to the state-of-the-art Middle School, known for its strong arts and music programs, a professional performance auditorium, double gymnasium and competition-sized swimming pool, among other facilities and offerings.

High school students, grade 9-12, enjoy enhanced programs and even advanced placement and college-level courses, an innovative internship program, a modern planetarium, a strong science curriculum, and more. There is also a vigorous, mentored science research program available to interested students.

Dear Peekskill Families,

As I enter my sixth year as the proud Superintendent of Peekskill Schools, I would like to thank the Peekskill Board of Education and our school community for their continued support. I am privileged to work alongside a team of educators and families who are dedicated to keeping the “Peekskill Promise.”

I am excited to announce that we have begun our district’s centennial celebrations, and will continue these festivities throughout the 2023-2024 school year as we recognize 100 years of Peekskill Pride! We are excited to share the rich history of our schools with our students and the Peekskill community.

In 2023-2024, our district begins to see the benefit of our years of advocacy work as the full funding of Foundation Aid helps to offset our budget increases.

Looking back on our accomplishments from the 2022-23 school year, our district continues to progress as we enhance our student programming and improve our facilities. Additionally, we have added teaching staff and continue to provide educators with professional development opportunities.

At the elementary level, we recently added three new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) Labs across the district. New lab spaces at Uriah Hill, Woodside and Oakside now join existing STEAM spaces at Hillcrest and PHS.

After school programs are thriving at Woodside, Oakside, Hillcrest, PKMS and PHS thanks to the use of grant and district funding.

Moving forward, we will continue to hold the five tenets of the Peekskill Promise as our guide for all that we do. Focusing on aligned, rigorous and culturally responsive education, while providing robust literacy and STEAM opportunities is paramount for the success of our scholars. Furthermore, we remain committed to nurturing the “whole child,” while providing enrichment experiences and powerful partnerships.

The High School provides a comprehensive program for Regents and honors students, advanced placement courses, a science research program, an innovative STEM experience, computer and video technology, art, music, and performing arts instructional spaces and performance centers, and superior athletic programs and facilities. For the past five years, I’ve had the honor and privilege to serve the Putnam Valley School Community as the Superintendent of Schools. Putnam Valley has always been a special place for me, having grown up in the community and attended our elementary and middle schools, before attending high school in the Lakeland School District. In fact, my mother still lives in town, closely watching over the oldest of her four boys.

Together with an amazing staff, we foster an atmosphere of collaboration and learning. Our dedicated educators are prepared to challenge and inspire our students, and I encourage all of our students to embrace the opportunities that lie ahead. Journey Allied Health Training Center, LLC CNA tuition cost is ALL-INCLUSIVE (books, uniform, CPR, & malpractice insurance are included in the price). The Certified Nurse Aide/ CNA program is open to those 17 years of age who are interested in in a career in the health field and who have a desire to care for others. The Clear View School

The Clear View School offers students a fully comprehensive therapeutic treatment program within an academic setting that fully complies with NYS Standards. Students have the opportunity to receive a NYS Regents Diploma, Regents Diploma with Distinction, a local diploma, and a Career Development and Occupational Studies Credential (CDOS). Class sizes are small, with a student/teacher ratio of 3:1, allowing for individualized and small group instruction tailored to each student’s needs. Special education services are available along with life skills and prevocational studies offered at all levels. The Clear View School is a New York State Office of Mental Health licensed facility.

The Clear View School Therapeutic Nursery Program serves children ages 3 to 5 by laying the foundation for success in school. Students receive the full complement of therapeutic services while working on readiness skills—both academic readiness (pre-reading, pre-math, etc.) and social readiness. With small class sizes, teachers and clinical staff can quickly respond to student needs and ensure that the educational experience is rich with opportunity for exploration and growth.

SUNY Westchester Community College

WCC offers not only the most affordable education in the County but is the most convenient. It offers a wide array of three-credit courses so that residents can start college closer to home. With its main campus in Valhalla, New York, Westchester Community College is part of the State University of New York’s SUNY’S network of four and two year colleges.

SUNY Westchester Peekskill Center for the Digital Arts & More

WCC has its SUNY Westchester Peekskill located in Peekskill’s downtown artist district. The Peekskill Center offers a variety of digital media and filmmaking curricula in its five post-production studios including a new iTech program that includes interactive design training. St. Patrick’s Day Parade: Scheduled on the first Sunday before St. Patrick’s Day in March. This parade is a fun-filled fundraising event for the whole family. Peekskill Museum’s 76 Years of History and Going Strong

Peekskill is truly a bastion of our nation’s history. Major milestones and events in American history are rooted in Peekskill and the surrounding areas of Croton-on-Hudson, Buchanan and Cortlandt. Henry Hudson sailed by here in the 1600s, Washington encamped here in the 1700s, and Lincoln gave a speech here in the 1800s and a Peekskill Mayor served three terms as New York’s governor in the 1990’s. The Peekskill Museum contains a treasure of exhibits that commemorate and celebrate all those events and many more. The museum also annually conducts a series of programs and events to celebrate local history.

The city has honored many an important event, some quietly and some with big fanfare, including the 100th anniversary of the founding of the nation’s oldest Lincoln Society (est. 1903); the 75th anniversary of Peekskill’s designation as a city (est. 1940); the 100th anniversary of the Rotary Club in Peekskill (est. 1919), and the 75th anniversary of the Peekskill Museum (est. 1946). Even the Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 100th anniversary (est. 1915) seven years ago.

The time-honored museum has been housed in the Victorian-style, Herrick house at 124 Union Avenue since 1946 (although the “painted lady” goes back to the 1870s). Formerly owned by Chester Smith, founder of the Peekskill Museum Foundation and former president of the Field Library.

The 2021-22 museum year was capped off with a successful building fund drive. The 75th Anniversary Gala featured former Governor (and former vice-president of the Peekskill Museum Board) George Pataki. The event helped raise necessary funds to restore and paint the Herrick House. There was a rededication ceremony of the revolutionary war cannon that graces the museum’s front lawn. And to recognize Washington’s Birthday, a reading of excerpts of President Washington’s farewell Address were read in the historical Birdsall House located on Main Street. It was at that site that General Washington planned the retaking of New York for the revolutionary troops.

Visitors and residents alike are encouraged to visit the museum, which is open Saturdays from 1:00 to 4:00 PM and by appointment. You will be treated to many permanent and temporary exhibits and displays, including interesting memorabilia, artifacts from yesteryear, a lady’s Victorian bedroom, a special baseball exhibit and a whole lot more.

The volunteer staff is hospitable and knowledgeable, while the old homestead just makes a body want to linger awhile and soak-in the atmosphere. Be sure to stop by the museum’s gift shop where one can purchase a small souvenir or even a baseball jersey with the city’s name stitched across the chest, just like the one Madonna wore in the movie “A League of Their Own.” (That’s right, Madonna’s baseball jersey said “Peekskill.”).

THE LINCOLN DEPOT MUSEUM

The Lincoln Depot Museum is located in Peekskill, within a 19th Century railroad depot where president- elect Abraham Lincoln once stopped and gave an inspiring speech on the way to his inaugural in Washington, DC. According to its website, the museum is “Dedicated to perpetuating the name, ideals and memory of Abraham Lincoln, and to explore and encourage patriotism.” The museum also explores the many fascinating connections between Abraham Lincoln and New York including its regiments, railroad, industrial waterfront and the abolitionist movement. Visitors can review aspects of New York history through multi-media presentations, exhibitions, interpretive signage and printed materials. MOCA – MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

The former Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art is now Hudson Valley MOCA, with its new name reflecting an expanded mission to bring world-class art and ideas to the Hudson Valley Gateway region. Located in Peekskill as a non-profit public institution, exhibitions at MOCA feature contemporary art by emerging talents displayed alongside renowned international artists. To date, hundreds of noteworthy artists have had their works first exhibited within its walls.

THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD & SISTERS IN SUPPORT, INC.

Thanks to the Underground Railroad Tour of Peekskill and a local organization called Sisters In Support, people can take a two-hour journey visiting historic sites where Harriet Tubman guided slaves to freedom in the local area. The tour includes the A.M.E. Church, the Beecher Safe House, and actual tunnels and trails that slaves used throughout the region in order to reach safe passage. Wilfredo Morel has devoted his life to serving the underserved. Born in the Dominican Republic, he came to the New York region with his father in 1976 and has been an unofficial “ambassador” in Peekskill, someone everyone just seems to know. Morel is an artist and businessman through his company “Steel Imaginations” creating sculptures with recycled materials. He is also a health professional with Sun River Health, advocating and serving to overcome health disparities of migrant workers, HIV/AIDS, and marginalized populations.

Eight years ago, Wilfredo added another project to his portfolio by joining diverse people together and founding “Arts10566”, bringing artists from many fields to teach young minority students to develop their talents and enjoy creating.

Wilfredo approached local businesses for donations that enabled the support for Arts 10566 to provide a dozen different after-school classes free of charge to over 250 students.

“My community is very specifically people in public housing, the homeless, new immigrants. I’m seeing them not included in the whole equation,” says Wilfredo. “So we started Arts10566 .... to change the perception that because I live in public housing, or my parents have been incarcerated does not mean I cannot indulge in the opportunities we offer. We help build self-esteem through creating art.”

BLUE MOUNTAIN RESERVATION

Within 1,538 acres, the reservation showcases miles of trails for all kinds of activities as impressive Mount Spitzenberg and Blue Mountain look down upon its enthusiastic visitors. Although more of a day-trip destination, Blue Mountain has its own lodge for group rental.

THE BRIARCLIFF TO PEEKSKILL TRAILWAY
(www. parks.westchestergov.com): This popular trailway is accessible from the Blue Mountain trail system and those who have hiked this 12-mile road claim that it is top notch. Two comfort stations are included along the way. Other Hudson Valley parks abound (see below), especially Tea Town Reservation in Ossining, Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson and Muscoot Farm located in Somers.

HARRIMAN STATE PARK (www.parks.ny.gov): Located just across the Hudson River in Rockland and Orange counties, Harriman State Park is in close proximity to the smaller Bear Mountain State Park. With more than 47,000 acres, Harriman is the second-largest park in the NYS park system with 31 lakes and reservoirs, 200 miles of trails, beaches and camp areas, and more. Some of Harriman’s major lakes include Welch, Sebago, Tiorati and Silvermine.

The National Maritime Historical Society has a mission “to preserve and perpetuate the maritime history of the United States….” To accomplish that, there are conferences, exhibitions and other special events that are both educational and fun.

Hudson Highlands Gateway Park

The Hudson Highlands Gateway Park has four trails, totaling more than 4.9 miles, that traverse the 352-acre site. The degree of difficulty for the hiking trails ranges from easy to moderate.

Annsville Creek Trail approx. 1 hr. This trail starts at Doris Lee Dr. and is universally accessible to the Pond Overlook. It travels by Annsville Creek, which contains breeding trout populations. Fishing is allowed. A sensitive wetland area surrounds the creek.

Upland Trail approx. 2 hrs. A steep ascent through a meadow and mixed woods forest brings you to a terrific view of the Hudson River. The remainder encompasses rolling terrain that passes by many remaining stone walls.

Hudson Overlook Spur approx. 30 min. Distinguished by its scenic overlook, this trail also crosses a small stream which is the outlet of a large wetland upslope of the trail.

Vernal Pool Trail approx. 1.5 hrs. Beginning from the northernmost point of the Upland Trail, this trail works its way up and along a ridge line. As it descends it passes by a large vernal pool, through a wetland and contains a number of steep slopes. The trail finishes along an old woods road and rejoins the Upland Trail.

HISTORY: In May of 2000, The Scenic Hudson Land Trust, Inc. purchased 203 acres of the park and the Town of Cortlandt, and Westchester County purchased the remaining 149 acres. Ultimately, a conservation easement will be granted to Scenic Hudson by the Town and County, forever preserving the property as parkland and passive recreational use. “take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints.” The Hudson Highlands Gateway Park’s 352 acres encompass many different ecologically significant habitats. Annsville Creek runs through the property providing stream and riparian habitats, which support brown and brook trout breeding as well as populations of wood duck. The park’s upland wetlands consist of vernal pools and wooded swamps that are crucial habitat for wood frogs, tree frogs, red-backed and two-lined salamanders.

Westchester County is in the Atlantic Flyway, one of three major bird migration corridors in the US. . Come spring, thousands of birds fly over and often stop in the park. The relatively unfragmented forest of the park attracts species such as the scarlet tanager, ovenbird, and great-crested flycatcher. The former gravel mines and agricultural fields provide habitat for blue jays, catbirds, house wrens as well as hawks and owls that use these areas to hunt.

HUDSON VALLEY GATEWAY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber Foundation (HVGCF) is the nonprofit affiliate of the Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce (HVGCC). Established in 2018, the mission of the Foundation focuses on:

* Programs and services that promote local tourism and visitor information resource initiatives

* Supporting higher education and vocational training through scholarship awards

* Programming to advance sustainable workforce development

In carrying out our mission the Foundation is developing innovative and accessible resources to support regional tourism and enhance the general prosperity of our region. Annually, six scholarships are awarded to seniors in our service area school districts and four vocational scholarships are awarded to persons pursuing further education in the trades In addition, the Foundation has sought grants to enable us to partner with other organizations in advancing workforce development programs and offered a Workforce Readiness Certification Program through SUNY Westchester.

Business Council Breakfasts

Held on the first Thursday of each month, Business Council Breakfasts feature a variety of speakers and opportunities for members to distribute literature and information about their companies and organizations. An average attendance of approximately 80 people allows for a quality networking experience for all. Attendees meetup with old friends and make new ones but, more than anything else, they share in new business ideas as they get to know each other and their common goals.

Business After Hours

Business After Hours is a popular social event that strengthens ties to the community as well as fellowship with other business members. This special get-together offers a relaxed environment for mingling and connecting with one another. After all, what better way to celebrate the end of the day than with fellow Chamber members at one of the Chamber’s local member-restaurants. Members are kept abreast of this popular networking event with monthly emails or members can obtain more information at the Chamber’s website.
